How to Make a Gradient in Illustrator

The free-form gradient seems pretty neat.
Though what I've been looking for is a way for gradients to fallow the shapes of the path, like having star shaped gradients or square ones.
Is there any way to do that in Adobe Illustrator?
I've been using PowerPoint as a vector graphics software and been considering branching out and getting a proper program but I'm kinda coming to realize just how useful and powerful PowerPoint's clip art functions have been.

I dont see any gradient tools in Properties after I apply the gradient.
