If you get to read this, I'm 64 and am still drinking, 8 cans and half a bottle of vodka a day. Married for 37 years and my wife is a legend. I'm determined now to amend my ways, because of you. Brings it home. Will let you know how it goes.

Cigs are nothing compared to drinking, but I had the same mindset. That whole "never again?" thing had me ANXIOUS! I mean I was already feeling terrible, I chose to quit smoking and yet the thought of NEVER AGAIN? Wow, it took my breathe away and freaked me out. Managing addiction in little spaces of time is much easier, stop thinking about forever, and just think about now. Get through today.

yep periodic binge drinking vs every day makes no difference. WHEN you drink you cannot stop and bad stuff happens... this is alcoholism. Its ok keep it up and DO NOT DRINK one day at a time one minute at a time if that's what it takes... ive put together many days in a row here over 30 years sober and it is still hard sometimes.. one day at a time one minute at a time

@@markdam agree. Coming up on 25 yrs this August. But there are times when that 💩hops back up on my shoulder and whispers in my ear "you can have just one....". The thing that helps me is that I really do "remember when" and i don't ever wanna go back to that living hell and sheer terror that alcohol put me thru. It took me over half a lifetime to put more than 2-3 RS together. But the older i got the worse affect the alcohol had on me. When i was young I'd bounce right back but as the yrs went on it became harder and harder . I 2as desperately sick. And, yes, it's not how one drinks or what one drinks or where one drinks, etc. It's what the alcohol does to you. I remember hearing people say they couldn't be alkies cause they only drank beer! The last time i drank it was beer. My sick thinking had got a hold of me before i picked up and i, too, thought "it's only beer.". I drank beer for 3 days and went into acute kidney failure. So, i hear you and agree with what you say and congrats on 30+ yrs!!!

Technically, it is considered "alcohol abuse," which is one step below alcoholism. Do they do the same damage? Yes, so it is best to stop one's alcohol abuse. Had he been alcoholic, he would be suffering from delirium tremors, etc. He doesn't appear to be, so it's most likely alcohol abuse. Sorry to be one of "those people," but I believe in being factual.

    • @brimstonefootsteps4332

@@yvonneclaes5208 Not writing this to start a controversy in a good man’s story but I believe it needs said. Technicality’s have no place in the world of alcoholism. Using any drug or “compound” outside it’s stipulated or prescribed use is drug abuse.Technically taking 1 extra Tylenol is considered drug abuse. That in no way should be categorized the same as a part time Heroin user. Binge drinkers can also easily be alcoholics. I know I am one as well as an RN who now treats all type of addiction patients. I have 4 years sober by the grace of God.

Gareth. I’m a 72 year old woman who lives in South West Africa. Son, I gave up drinking in my 40s when I decided to live the same life as a Buddhist monk for 1 year only. This seemed to me to be a perfect change from the hippie era through many ‘colorful’ years that I had taken to with such heart and enthusiasm. Both experiences I look back at with huge affection and appreciation. But the best part through all of my subsequent adventures after that was that I never took to drinking alcohol again. I have no criticism towards anyone who does …none at all….but for me personally, the sober years have somehow been more enriching and memorable. Bless you son, and bless your family.

Never seen any of your food reviews but for some reason your first video popped up in my youtube feed , about quitting alcohol and curiosity got the better of me and clicked your video.
Watched every other follow up after that, Why you wonder maybe, well we share something in common. Alcoholism, and hearing you share your experience is a reminder why i stopped drinking 10 years ago and why i want to stay sober. I been there, "binge" drinking since i was 15 years old, i probably hit bottom bit harder, i was slowly destroying my health, i was wrecking cars while drunk driving ( thank god i never hit anybody but could have done ), putting my kids and wife lives through hell with my drunken tantrums and behavior at times. I was not a "binge" drinker, i became a full blown functioning alcoholic, could go days without a drink but was just fooling myself believing i was just a binge drinker. Not untill i had to serious hit rock bottom and was about to lose everything i realized i was powerless over alcohol and a fullblown alcoholic.
admitting one has a problem with alcohol is a first step, a very brave and hard step to take! Now i am 50 years old, still sober and life is so much better belief me , still got problems in life but that normal, at least none of the problems a due to alcohol or related. Alcoholism is a disease and if not threated it will destroy every good thing in your and the people around you.
Don't be to hard on yourself, take it one day at a time , it will get better. I still have plenty of days that i am trying to convince myself that i could handle a drink again, like today and guess what...for some reason i suddenly see a video of you in my RUclips feed sharing your struggles. Reminding me why i got sober, helping me staying sober, by just watching you being a honest strong brave man confessing his problem with alcohol is not only helping you, it works in my ways! So keep doing what you doing, ignore the negative ones, the amount of positive comments speaks for itself, your not alone , stay strong and i wish you all the best on your journey into recovery and sobriety.

Hi Gareth, I'm glad you've had this insight. The hardest thing about giving up alcohol is that you can't see your old drinking buddies. You'll miss them. Prepare for that. But they will get you drinking again. Quitting drink is a group activity. You'll need to meet other people who will help you, who will occupy your time so that you don't get bored and stop in at the pub. Good luck to you. It sounds like you have the right values, but you'll need help from others.

My mum rang me this morning at 5am saying my 80yr old dad hadn't come home and she's worried. He's an alcoholic, i said mum don't worry. About an hour later the police brought him home after they found him in the street. This is not the first time. He goes to the pub every day and nobody can tell him anything. So the fact you're addressing the problem at your age is commended. The man in the mirror has to change his ways no one else. Bless you 🙏🏾

My last drink was 10th August 2015. I was given 2 days to live, my partner and 3 sons were called into the hospital, told they could visit whenever they wanted, night and day. I made a promise to my sons, when I get out I will never drink again. They looked shocked that I was adamant I was getting out alive. I’m here to tell you it’s doable, there is always drink in the house, it doesn’t bother me. I chose to live, not wander into death. I lost my husband to cancer in 2011, he had no choice; I did have a choice and life is so much better without the drink. Hang in there, stay strong; it’s worth it 🙏🏼🥰

She hasn't smoked a cigarette for 15 years now. It's a mindset thing. Don't 'give it up', or your brain will fixate on what you've given up. But the brain is ok with ' just not today'. Good luck Gareth. You're doing this not just for yourself, but for your children.

You can do it. I gave up alcohol 6 wks ago after drinking nearly 2 bottles of wine most days, since moving to Spain 19yrs ago. Like you, I drank until I got drank and could not just have 1 or 2. Now I drink fresh lemon and water, fresh ginger and water daily to rejuvenate my liver. I cannot believe the difference in my health since giving it up. Sleep all night, no more heartburn, no anxiety and paranoia, weight loss and my blood pressure is now that of a teenager, whereas I am 56. Good luck, it is worth it ❤

I lost my father 4 years ago due to alcoholism. He was 61. I commend you for owning your behaviour and taking accountability for your addiction. My father tried, but couldn't for many reasons. Reasons like severe mental health issues. But you're here now, and you're here being vulnerable. Your kids will remember that. Trust me.
I hope you get to a place where you learn to forgive yourself. Don't tear yourself down. What's done is done, and you're owning your life and responsibility as a father and husband. I'd recommend even seeing a therapist or joining a program that will help you get to the root cause of why you relied on alcohol, and have the tools to manage your emotions and mood.
    Best of luck.

At 71 yr old female drinker, I drink far too much for my health but I never get to the stage of being out of control because I get sick before that, and I don't like that so I stop before that happens. You're very brave for putting this all out there, it's refreshing to see someone REAL and willing to bare everything. Very proud of you for your honesty and your choice. A lot of people never come to realize they have a problem and if they do, they're too scared to change. I've been an addict since I was 24 years old. Well, I imagine longer than that; I started drinking a fifth of alcohol a night when I was 19, did that for a few years and then switched to going to the bar every night and blacking out literally every time I drank. 24 hit and I decided to add substance abuse to my repertoire. Still kept on drinking, don't get me wrong there, but now I could drink even more. Did that until I was probably 32, then pretty much stopped drinking out of nowhere. Just got bored with the booze I guess, not really sure why. Didn't get clean, just mostly sober. A year ago on April 1, I tried to k1ll myself, and obviously failed. Got involuntarily committed for 2 weeks in a mental institution, where I got clean. I felt no different, I wasn't miserable and it wasn't difficult, there were no withdrawals and I planned to stay clean when I got out. Did so for a bit after I got home, until I started to feel. I have no coping skills and I've been numb since I was 19. There's A LOT of things I am unwilling and unable to deal with, and so here I am at 51, right back where I was. You're very brave, you're strong and you can do this. Thank you for being open and honest and letting us in on your journey. Maybe I'll give it another shot one of these days. Your quit or lose everything appeared in my feed, and now I've watched the others. Thank you for being so vulnerable, open, and honest. it's inspiring to watch. I wish you the best for your journey. I'm 56 and have drank since the age of 13. I binged on nights out with mates when younger but never had drink in the house when my kids were young. Then life happened, and drinking became a crutch. I then became a regular drinker, but not a drunk, so 1 or 2 glasses of wine most nights, but then water and tea to re-hydrate before bed. It's been like this for years now, and it's taking its toll. I've been thinking of stopping altogether for a while. Thank you for the kick up the ass to motivate me! I woke up one day in 2004 and just stopped smoking, but this feels harder. I'm going to try what I did when i stopped smoking, which was repeatedly saying,'I release the need for nicotine' over and over, and it became my mantra. I've never had a cigarette since, and it didn't take long before the cravings were gone completely. So, here goes, "I release the need for alcohol." 🙏

Well done for your honesty and your efforts - you're not only doing this for yourself, but also your family, especially your children and your wife - they need you too. Keep going - you'll get there. You're a good man that's made a mistake - that's it. The future will be better for all of you.

I know. I know. Imagine losing your entire immediate family within 5 years. My mum, my brother, my dad, my best mate, my beloved mother in law, my aunt all moved on and that was coupled with a 70 hour week and writing my PhD. Yeah, I had to detox. I had a dry May - 35 days free and you get reenergised. But Ronnie Wood said give up. At 63. Enough. I'm 62 and I see that. I love you man. I love your style. Don't give up the channel. Become stronger because of it.

Gareth, you seem to be one of those men who counts your blessings. You’re also a humble down to earth man. I feel that these qualities will steer you right and you will be the father and husband you feel they deserve.

*Your update is sincere and heartfelt- you definitely can turn your back and walk away from the demon drink bald foodie guy*
We all truly know you are a fantastic person and this won’t change. You will re discover the new joys . 9days in,your just about through the worst if there were going to be any side effects of not drinking.
You have been sufficiently frightened with this fall and your children seeing you injured. Your back bone is your wife ,your heart is your children and you have your parents. You are very lucky and blessed 🙏🏻💯💜

Stay strong, man. I fell off the wagon after three-years sober, and I'm climbing back on today.
Best advice I ever heard when I went sober last time was not to say to yourself that you'll never drink again, because that seems like a monumental task. Instead, just promise yourself you're not going to drink today, and make that promise on a daily basis. It worked for me for three years until a few months after my dad passed away during the first lockdown. Worst decision ever, but the past is the past, now the only way to look is forward.
All the best and keep going.

It doesn't matter what other people think or say, it's your family and what they feel that matters. They are the support that will help you ditch the booze and prevent the alcohol induced incidents that we look back on with regret and shame. I like a drink and have binged booze in the past but I realized that I had to mature and grow up and now I drink in moderation and put my health and family first. One thing I did learn was to ditch your drinking mates...they do not help...move on.

I'm proud of you. I know how hard it is. I was a blackout binge drinker, now two and half years sober. Keep going! Keep doing, day by day, step by step. ❤
