In my senior year I've met a guy that does martial arts as I do. We've talked and when he told me he does muay thai I was quite nervous about telling him I did karate. I told him anyways and he was actually chill about it. He basically said, "If you want to compete, be athletic, stronger and have fun, do karate. If you want to learn how to f*ck people up, then go for muay thai. It's just more likely you'll have a better career in karate than muay thai."
Took me about a week of training, then I sparred with a good friend of mine, Devonte, he used to do TKD before Thai; bro kicked my ass with question mark kicks and some crazy angling, I was still pretty new, but it was a good wake up call. Ever since I never judge a martial art, instead I judge the individual practitioner regardless of chosen martial art. I will say my coach has an undying loathing for Karate though, no clue why as he likes TKD and Kickboxing…

Yep, back when I was young, proud of my 6 months of Katate, one of my classmates was doing something called "Muay Thai". He treated to a light spar, and I found myself getting kicked on my thiighs and I had no answer to those kicks. I'm glad he didn't show me clinches and knees to the face.
Since I'm Thai, I admit that there are some people who think like that, but that's not the case. For us, respecting the opponent is more important than winning.
That is so true when you meet some toxic creeps. Those people train to be tough, but so few learn or teach to respect. Even some coaches aren't a good role models neither. It ain't funny at all.
I don't practice karate but I do like it a lot I have stole certain techniques from karate and it made me a better striker.(friendly reminder to be more open minded)
People mistake doing a martial art for trying to specifically hurt someone or to go to street fights. Some do it for that, some for sport, some for flexibility, some for health, some for fun.
At least karate doesn't give a very mild headache after a "light spar". You get a little offence in and then the guy just starts tryna give you a concussion.
Muy thai is fun and covers a lot, but there’s still certain elements lacking from it that other martial arts provide like jiu jitsu and judo when it comes to wrestling and takedowns.
BJJ is ground fighting which is what most fights go to so if you consider chokes armbars camoras headlocks and learning to break bones “cuddling with a struggle” you’d be mistaken and might need to meet some real Ju-Jitsu athletes
Personally would prefer Wrestling. I respect BJJ, but I feel like Wrestling's more dominant heavy training and fighting style works better for me personally than trying to go for submissions.

Why do some people really not understand that it's nicer for everyone to just appreciate every martial art equally? A big part of the martial arts community is toxic like that and HAS to discuss which is the best (bringing all the others down in the process). I was unbelievably happy when I befriended a fellow martial artist over a writing platform (I do karate, she does taekwondo) and we asked each other normal, curious questions about the other's sport, appreciating differences and finding similarities too.
I respect almost all martial arts except taekwondo and aikido, taekwondo teaches great kicks just not the best base for mma, there are some really good mma fighters with a taekwondo background tho cause it also teaches good distance maintenance but for a complete striking base I’d go with Muay Thai or karate and for grappling you gotta do wrestling, jiu jitsu, and add a little judo and you’ve got a solid foundation for mma
Hey man, goju ryu and kyokushin are great and all (I actually do goju ryu) but the other styles need some love too. Shito-ryu, Uechi-ryu, Wado-ryu and lots more have their merit.
