Is your passenger window not working when using the driver’s side switch in your 2018 Subaru?
Brendan shows us how to reset the window switch on a 2018 Subaru Impreza.
Reset steps:
-Turn ignition to “Accessory” (not the first click, the second with the dash lights on)
-Go over to passenger side door to press and hold window switch down for 4 seconds
-Pull and hold up until the window rolls up on passenger side
-Go back to Driver’s side and test it out the window functionality

2:12 is where he starts showing you how to fix it.
Srsly. Thank you
Felt the same way.!
Was gonna say the same. Just get to the fix wtf.
Thank you 🙏🏼 it works 🙂
Is it gonna be the same procedure for hyundai i30? Have the same problem.
This could have been a 30 second video. I'm just trying to fix my car
Facts
3mins FOR WHAT?!
I agreee!!! I was saying the same thing
The most painful video I have ever seen on RUclips!!! That dude needs to be banned from RUclips.
One of you should make it
This video just saved me a trip to the service department.. Thank you!
I wanted to say THANK YOU! This happened to me after replacing my battery, just as you stated. I thought I was going to be scheduling a trip to the dealership. I will subscribe to this channel for sure.
ME TOO!
Yessss i didnt realize that it was after I had a battery replacement
Still works like a charm on outback 2019
Me too!
Awesome fix! I've been anxious about that window for a few days now and thankfully I thought to check you two before taking the car to the dealership! Great video! Great delivery andto the point.
Absolute legend!! Thank you 🙏
You must hold the button down for an entire 10 seconds (not just until the window is down which takes about 5 seconds) and 10 seconds up.
I did exactly what you said d it worked…thanks
What he said worked for me. Just down and back up
Thanks it took 10seconds for me. Maybe it's model dependent
Gotta love the people complaining about a 3 minute video being too long when someone is just trying help. Anyway, thank you so much for this!!
Yeah complaining about not taking a trip to the dealer to get something easily fixed and they're complaining about the video. Ungrateful people😮
Lol the parts guy from the Subaru dealer sent me to watch...
And it worked perfectly 👍👍
OMG! I had called the dealership to see why my windows weren’t working after changing the battery. They were going to charge $150 for a diagnostic check and then charge for the “fix”. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!
My question is why does this happen at all on a new vehicle?I have a 2019 Outback and this is a common issue that needs correction every few months. When my issue occurs, the button on the passenger side will only raise the window a few inches at a time (nine tries to completely raise the window). The other issue is the windows (both the front driver and passenger) will go all the way up, then immediately about 1/3 of the way down. I also have no control of the windows from the driver's side control when the window lock button is activated, ever. I've had it to the dealership several times and it hasn't helped the situation. The same situation occurs with the rear lift gate requiring a reset every few months. This is our fourth Subaru between myself and my wife. She hasn't had the issues with her Forester, and I didn't with my 2015 Outback, but I'll not buy another Subaru as long as these issues are prevalent. What's even worse is when the dealership tells you "oh yeah, that happens all the time" and everyone seems to be okay with it.
Amen.
My 2017 only does this when the battery is disconnected. Could it be a defective battery?
Thanks! Done with a 2016 Legacy with pushbutton start (pushed twice to get into utility mode). Didn't work at first then saw someone note below that it took a few tries. Worked on the 3rd try :). I should mention that before the fix, the passenger window worked, but not in auto mode.
Thank you so much! I recently changed the battery and didn't know this could happen. All fixed!
Same here!! I stumbled upon this video and was so thankful for finding it!!
I'm at my place in remote northern Canada. My battery died and this feature, that I use all the time to chitchat with my friends and neighbors along the road, stopped working. I also use this feature when going through the border as they often ask to open all the windows and pop the hatch. I was starging to get nervous. The manual for my 2018 Outback included instructions for initialization of automatic windows that I tried a dozen or more times. I finally did a google search and found this site. Your solution worked immediately and without further hassle. Why this isn't in the manual when it happens somewhat often disillusions me about Subies, though I keep buying them anyways.
Thank you! This was driving me nuts. Much appreciated.
I was on my way to the dealership to have it fixed. Amazing how much money we save with these instructional videos. Thank you for the tip.🙏👍
Wow man. I had to change my battery this morning and I was freaking out. Life saver.
This video saved me a trip to the dealer. Thank you so much!
Unbelievable! Thank you so very much. In all of my infinite car wisdom (LOL) I can’t imagine why this would happen for my battery swap. I’ve had cars from the 80s and up with power windows and it was never an issue when doing a battery swap..
Ten second version: 1) Turn the car to accessory mode. 2) On the passenger side, roll the window down all the way, hold for five seconds. 3) Still on the passenger side, roll the window all the way up, hold for five seconds.
Worked wonderfully on my 2019 wrx! I had disconnected the battery and install aftermarket headlights and fog bezels and added a fuse. That is what caused it. Note you will hear a clicking noise when the function is reset
2018 WRX in need after clutch and short thro install. 😬
I am so glad I decided to check the internet for a fix before taking the door apart and trying to remedy! Thank you for the tip!
You are doing gods work man!!! Thank you!! I was like ooh no I guess im having electrical issues now but no! Your video was so easy to follow and worked on first try! I watched another RUclipsr who said to do it while the car was running which was why it didn't work for me. Tried yours and went to lower it, worked perfectly. Thank you so much!!!!
The dealer just wanted to charge me over 800$ for this repair! Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video! I recently had my battery replaced and freaked out when my passenger side window switch didn't work. You saved me a lot of time and frustration!
Many thanks! I was in the process of buying a new switch to install - looking for install videos, I came across this and you've saved me time and money (I would have found the problem still existed). Such a crazy "feature" - I had the battery disconnected while changing the front driver seat cover - so of course, this triggered the passenger window issue.
2018 WRX. After mods I couldn’t figure out how I broke my car lmao.
This literally was the case for me today. Was worried I shot something from the fuses. Turns out it was me freaking out for nothing lol
Same for me. I was trying to figure out how a third brake light could possibly affect wiring for the windows?!
WOW.....Why can't life be like this more often ? BIG thanks from Chicago.....
I was away from home for more than 1 week so my car was dead-dead. I found this video and It WORKED on my 2019 Subaru outback! Thank you so much!
Just happened to me in my 2019 Outback when changing my battery. I thought I was going to have to spend a lot money to fix it. This fix took less than 1 minute. Thank you 👏🏽🤝🏽
This totally saved me a trip, thanks. It was just that, my battery died and i had to recharge it. Subaru Outback 2017.
I don't have a key, mine is push button. I just did this while at a red light and it worked fine
same for me
Thanks! Even this 67. Year old grandma followed directions and save me a trip to my service center.
Fun fact - I work at the Subaru factory in Indiana and one of our stations has this incorporated into the process as a first-time initialization of the window's auto up and down feature. Interesting to see you have to re-do it sometimes.
Every time that I disconnect the battery
Saved me a trip to the dealership! Thanks so much!
Thank you my battery went dead on my Outback while I was in the hospital and I had the same problem! You saved me a trip to the dealership as the closest one is an hour away! Thank you again for sharing this!!
Just subscribed. Thank you, my wife had the battery and 4 Bridgestone tires replaced in her 2019 Outback. She has the keyless fob push button start. I had to put her car in the starting mode by placing my foot on the foot brake then starting the Outback. So the Outback is running, Not just accessory mode 😊
Thank you!!! I've never seen a car do this before (I've been working on cars for 20 years). I just assumed the master switch went bad. I'm not sure why Subaru designed it this way, but I'm glad to have this knowledge now!
Yes. Why did Subaru do this?
Thank you so much ! that did it ! Thank you ! battery was low hade to jump start it serval weeks ago ..had trouble with passenger window . Works now after I did this process on passenger window . WOW God Bless you !
Freaking straight G. I was about to start tearing into the wiring 😂 put a smile on my face when I realized how easy this was and when it actually worked 🙌🏽👌🏽
I was literally about to do the same! just got my wrx today and noticed this issue on the way home. decided to check RUclips and this popped up. so glad i looked here first, it worked!
I just bought an used 2018 Subaru Outback and was thinking about returning it because of this issue. I followed instructions and it works. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for being one of the only Subaru dealers to make videos like this. I’ve been having small issues like this happen to my car recently and the nearest dealer is an hour away. I’ve called to ask questions and they refuse to let me talk to the service techs. It’s so frustrating when it’s something this simple!
Omg thank you!!!! 1600 mile road trip and my daughters window stopped working with rain coming. Total fix!
Holy crap, can you babble on a little longer before showing the actual sequence?
Literally pulled out of the shop after having damage fixed from a collisions, I kid you not I was ready to turn right around till I saw this vid !!!
Thank you! That was a super easy fix and saved me from going to the dealership.
from Utah. Glad this solution came up. Just had a dead battery. This problem popped up. Fix was EXACTLY as explained. GO AVS!!!
Thank you for this video. My battery was replaced and like so many others, I was thinking of taking my Outback to the dealer!!! I am now a subscriber!!
We have a 2019 outback and the same thing happened, however to fix it, we had to turn the car off immediately after we rolled the passenger side down and up.... then we turned the car back to Accessory and it worked fine.
2021 this was the first video saved me from going to the dealerships.
Perfect....I would have taken my Outback to the dealership for this quick fix. Much appreciated!!
This worked perfectly!!!!! I had to get a new battery and then the passenger window wouldn’t work from the driver side, just like you said. 30 seconds after watching this video-success!!!! Thank you!!!!
You the man worked on the first try.
I even called autozone and try getting the part and they don’t sell it hahahaha. I was looking for new switch and found this video thanks man
Just watched the video. Its 11:54 PM. We have a 2018 Subaru Outback Touring. I did what you said on the front passenger window and the two back passenger windows. It friggen worked. Wow !!! I am amazed. Like 2 minutes and it was done. Please note, one of the widows I had to do lower and raise it 3 times until it lowered and raised with out intermittent stopping. I am so impressed with the Grove whisperer. Thanks so much. Bob and Paulo
Thank you! I’ve seen other videos and they forget to to tell people to have in accessory mode. Worked flawlessly!
Thank you so much! There are so many Subaru battery disconnect problems, and this one seems to be the most difficult one to figure out.
This really meant a lot! My partner passed away and in January and willed his Subaru Forester to me. It is a WONDERFUL vehicle, but I would have to trade off a very nice truck and small RV to keep it instead... So, it had been sitting a bit and the battery died...but when I tried to charge it, it did a lot of what I guess now are very normal electrical things...clicks, flashing, etc. I actually paid to have it towed in, and when I got it back from the shop and it had the window thing, I was like...Uhhh man. When it rains it pours! Want it in tip top shape in prep to sale...So, Thank You again! PS. You helped me incredibly on located the fuse stuff too! 🙏
Thanks worked like a charm. I called the dealer and the guy didn't know how, so I will be using you in the future.
Thank you
Thank you
Thank you
My wife was freaking out after I changed the battery and the passenger window did not work. You Saved the day!
Thank you so much!!! I had my battery replaced this morning and had no idea what was going on with the windows!!!
Thank you. I had my Forester serviced yesterday and was quoted AU$175 to look at the problem, decided to check the internets for help first. You've saved me $175.
Just a note to say THANK YOU!!!. Called my local dealer and they told me to bring it in as it could be they may need to replace switch etc.. works great now.
SLAYED THIS. I was freaking out. Battery died and I was about to be very mad at myself. Thank u’
had my car in the shop for 4 months and was thinking it was something serious and realllllly didnt want to bring it back there... Thanks for this!
This saved me a visit to the car repair shop. Thank you!
Thanks so much. Saving me a very expensive trip to the dealer was so cool
Thanks for the tip you saved me a trip, my dealer is 140 miles away.
2019 Outback. About a month ago the front passenger power window became inoperative from both switch points. Totally dead. Then the battery died at home in our garage. Replaced the battery and had the problem described on this video. Window operation is now back to normal THANK YOU! Maybe the loss of window operation is an early warning of battery failure. If you experience this issue, have the battery tested before you get stuck somewhere. We love this car!
Thank you for sharing you video.
Yes, it really does work 😅
Thank you so much! You saved me an hour trip to the dealership!!
Thank you for reading my mind about needing the dealer. All I needed was you! All fixed!
Awesome! I called Subaru today about my window and came across this video when I was waiting for them to call me back. Thank you!
Hey! My passenger side is only going up in increments I have to keep pushing the button up from the passengers side maybe one inch at a time! Any ideas??
I have the same issue.. If you pull AUTO, on the Passenger window switch, it will go all the way then it immediately goes down. If you move it up in small increments you can get it to close...Did this work for you?
Worked like a charm! Just had our battery replaced a few days ago. I just noticed this morning that the driver side button for the passenger window wasn't working.
We tried this when pulled into the drive way with the Mrs. in the passenger seat, but it didn't work. So I tried again after she got out of the car, but this time I left both doors open while I did. Worked like a charm! Thank you!
I honestly felt like you were talking directly to me lol
“Most people think the window switch is on”
😂😂
2018 Subaru outback premium. Had this same issue, I did multiple resets on the pass window and the drivers still wouldn’t work. What I did was on the passenger side, hold the button down and when the window bottoms out keep holding the button. After about 4-5 sec I heard a faint click. Did the same thing going up, and heard the faint click. Driver side button then worked! I was in a quiet garage or else you probably won’t hear it.
Saved me the trip to the dealer !!! Thanks so much.
Thanks for the video it worked on my 2010 Subaru outback. Just a design idea that I’m surprised isn’t required by all cart manufacturers… Seems like there should be at least one window in the car that can have the option of operating manually. This way if someone has a dead battery at least they can still roll the window down for exiting or for ventilation
Tried this on my 2011 Forrester did not work. I had a new battery installed at the dealer a month ago and maybe they should have checked to see if they messed things up. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you! This video saved me a service call, 2 ferry rides, and a whole bunch of hours.
Thanks for this tip! It saved me a trip to the dealer 🙏
I would put two thumbs up if this app would let me... I live in Vermont and even though it is August it was a cold ride to work this morning... Thank you and for your information I believe this trick work on a 2010 Subaru Outback wagon. Cheap ass Edition.
LMFAO, I was just about to order a new master window switch for 140 bucks, and THIS worked!
I bet the dealership does these resets all the time and charges people for new window switches and labor.
Thank you for this video!!! Worked well for my 2017 Subaru WRX! I did disconnect my battery recently but thanks again!
Kinda seems about 4 decades of Subarus have the same problems. Keys stuck in ignition, windows, blown head gaskets. Kinda like Mitsubishi.
Toyota was much better off.
many thanks, i follow the instruction n passenger window working, new trick as I'm still learning more APPs, Navigator n others. 2018 Outback is my 1st car with entertaintment, Naviagtor, and back up viewer👍🤜🤛
Tell me why I fucking died laughing on how easy this was lol thanks bro
For our 2019 Legacy 2.5L, I noticed that the suggested repair didn't work on the passenger side unless you are actually seated in the passenger seat with the door shut (I tried to reach over the console rather than run around like he did, to no avail) ... and it took a couple of tries to figure this out, haha. Also, even though the driver's side does work as he noted (while holding the button), the quick one-press "auto-up" and "auto-down" feature did not work even after I tried to reset it; however, after shutting the driver door, making sure I was seated properly, and then repeating the process, everything worked just fine ... it took me a couple of tries to figure this out too, haha. I speak for many people here who may have freaked out after replacing their battery and noticing this issue: "Thank you very much for the helpful video!" You saved me a trip to the dealer and some $$$$.
My issue is that NEITHER side makes it work. Every video does not cover if the controls fail on both sides and it’s extremely frustrating.
Okay, except mine has push button starter and I don't even know how to turn it on battery mode without turning on the engine and IMHO it is pure bullshit that we have to actually go online to find out any of this. Duh Subaru... do you not get that this is a serious design flaw? Wtf...
Thank you, exactly what was needed. 2021 Subi WRX. Dealer tried telling me it would be $175 minimum to check it even with new car warranty, lol. Fkn scammers.
Yeah mine is more than a few years old but I’m going to try it irregardless today. It is a 2005 Subaru Outback. I’ll cross my fingers!!
2018 Subaru Outback limited. Same symptoms described, tried the accessory mode trick and it did not work. I have already pulled the window fuses and disconnected the battery before trying it. Not sure what I’m missing, lowered the window all the way down and back up in accessory mode, still was not working on the driver side. I’ll try a few more times to see if it’ll work.
TLDW:
1. Put keys into ignition, and turn to accessory mode (click twice counterclockwise, dont start engine)
2. Have a passenger roll their window down, and hold the down button for a few seconds. Then have them roll it up.
Test on drivers side. It should be fixed
Such poor design, why is this even necessary or not automatically done by the car itself? Also why do Subaru batteries die so often making this resync needed really often.
My 2018 (touring - all are auto) passenger window keeps going up and then reopening halfway. Only way I can get closed is to re enter the programming mode like this video tells and then close it manually which is harder to do with the controls since you have to remember to only pull the switch up halfway. Anyone else with same issue? I just want to fix my issue but trying these steps and no luck.
Why does this happen? What is the root cause? I understand _when_ it happens (the battery is dead, whatever) but WHY does it do this?
Did they make the windows work on some wireless standard now? And it needs to be re-pair'd like a Bluetooth connection would need? Why? Is this happening ? What is different from a car from 1996?
Excellent video. On my 2016 Outback, this technique works if I lower the passenger window, but not all the way down. Maybe two inches of window visible. Then, I run the passenger window all the way to the top and everything is fine. That Subaru would allow this issue to exist for years is troubling to me. Reminds me of the ignition key that can't be removed problem. Another Subaru design failure.
Thank you so much it worked for me
THANK YOU! I was ready to sell my 2017 Outback for parts (LOL!) after the passenger window stopped working and it was such a simple fix! I had replaced my battery a few weeks ago and didn't realize that it would cause that issue...
That's it?! My dealer was going to charge me for this. 🙄🙄🙄 Does this work on all windows? My battery was dying all the time (thanks, DCM) so I had this happen with all four windows.
