    this man is a genius and one of the best teachers alive. I used to watch your calculus videos, and am very surprised to see you teaching organic chemistry as well.
    Is there anything you don't know how to do?

    I am a BS Chemistry student and I have an organic chem teacher who is a Ph.D degree holder, and yet, everytime she teaches the lesson I can't hardly keep up. She doesn't know how to make the lesson easy for us to understand. That's why I'm glad I found this channel and I can get along no and understand clearly our lesson. Thank you! :)

    Thank god for this. I'm so thankful when I open a Khanacademy video and it's Sal speaking and not one of the other people. Best teacher there is.

    Same thing with my professor. Often times, more than half of the class has trouble keeping up! Thank you Khan Academy!

    Mr. Khan could you post a video teaching how to absorb and understand that big amount of knowledge and how you can you get it???

  • @scottweiss1480
    @scottweiss1480 11 лет назад +2

    Just so you know, when you arrow push you are moving a pair of electrons not a single one. So upon formation of the alcohol the resulting water molecule would have two lone pairs and not a lone pair and a free radical. Not going to happen!

    Is tautomerism able between -COOH?

  • @bonbonpony
    @bonbonpony 9 лет назад +11

    Your use of curly arrows is *wrong!* Their correct use in chemistry for reaction mechanisms is defined to shift two electrons (one bond or one lone pair), not one. If you wanna shift one electron, you should have used a half-arrow, but this would be incorrect in your case too, because you're not describing reaction with radicals, but normal reactions.

      he made a video clarifying this. He uses this notation because it makes more sense as to what s happening really since the whole pair isn't donated, its just 1 electron

    why isn't it possible that the water molecule attacks the carbonyl carbon and then gets deprotonated so it becomes an alkane with two hydroxy groups?

    • @takashgon6691
      @takashgon6691 8 лет назад

      it can't since carbonyl is most stable

    • @mddruns
      @mddruns 8 лет назад

      +takash gon It can actually, but it would just immediately convert back to the carbonyl since the C=O bond is much more stable
