I have to applaud Porsche for making the 3.0L turbo sound as good as it does, but NA always. The 991.1 just sounds better, less muted, more raw, and then there's the induction noise, which is characteristic to the 911.
I have a 991.1 C2S with the sports exhaust. Let me tell you, the sounds this car produces are surreal. It sounds so good. The 991.2 doesn't sound bad, but it's not even close to the 991.1.
The .2 911 sounds decent, but the .1 GTS just has a raspier/raw mechanical growl. The .2 is very impressive performance wise though with it's 3.4s 0-60 for the non-S version alone.
I always thought this. Having always loved Porsches and the legend of the Turbo! Iv started driving Porsches since around two years and bough two, 991.1 2S with sports exhaust and a 997.1 2S with sport exhaust. Iv driven a 997 turbo and my brother just bought a 992 4S. I can say my NA engines are far far more thrilling than all other turbo’s. I would only move up to a GTS NA or a Gt3.
The NA does sound better (as it should), however the difference is minor. It basically more raspy. The turbo PSE has very loud pops...sounds like fireworks when you let off the gas quickly after revving high. The NA PSE doesn’t do this, but has a nicer purr at lower RPM, where the turbo sounds obviously more muted in the cabin. The NA also drones quite a bit more than the turbo. I have 991.2 c4s pdk pse atm and have driven 2014 991.1. 2013-2016 981 boxster with top down and PSE sounds best if you’re looking for a more raw experience. The NA engines feel really slow and hesitant after driving the turbo...there is no going back once you get used to the power. Oh and there is zero lag in the turbo.
Hi, You don’t drive the NA the same way you drive the turbo. The NA start at 3500/4000 rpm and it is not hesitant at all until 8000. If Porsche let the NA on the GT3, it’s because of the feeling ans noise of the NA that a turbo cannot reproduce, even if it is more powerfull. Anyway, between turbo or NA , there is no bad choice. Depending what you expect. I prefer the NA. And if I had to choose a turbo, I would pick the « real » turbo. Just my choice.
Yeah, you really do want the 3.8L & fancy sound exhaust. Even just throwing on a cherrybomb thing every year would be cool enough with that stock routing underneath.
I'm tempted to buy the 991 NA, more as an investment car really as it would be the last NA 911. In terms of ownership, is either more reliable for long term engine health?
While the NA of course sounds better, as the others say still fantastic sound on the 991.2. Good Porsche did not go the BMW route sound wise as with the E92M3 to FXXM3/M4.
The NA version will always be better than the turbo. Even if the turbo is better performance wise, the only reason you take these cars at all over others is their appeal and the naturally aspirated 3.8 sounds a dozen times better. The only other car that can sound close to these is the Straight Six, W8 or W12.
Go drive the .2 and then come back and talk. The gen 2 is a far better car. Steering inputs are much sharper. Balance is better. Power is waaay up. Sound is very good too. Newer is better.
There is kind of 'tail' or 'shadow'-sound of 3.0 turbo, which is a bit annoying. I would not like to listen to that bugging sound everyday. N/A sound is pure and clean because it is natural.
excellent video i have been wondering about this. the turbo really mutes the hell out of it. or the massively downsized engine killed the sound. or likely both. 3 liters is quite the turd. a 2006 Cayman S had a larger engine. that being said, i have never found the sound of a base 911 or 911S to sound like much of anything to my ear, have owned both. nothing compared to a v8 in say an old r8 i had, so i suspect this all makes no difference in the grand scheme of things anyhow. or, maybe i am deaf from my GT3, now there’s a sound...
To all Fans of Naturally aspirated engines. Please Drive the Cars yourself. The difference in Sound is very Little. Both have Sound symposers that brings the intake Noise in the Cabin. The Sound of the new 3.0 is better than the 3.8
This is a shit comparison. Needs to be both cars equally equipped (do both have sport exhaust?), demonstrated in the same way, in the same environment. This is about as unscientific as it gets. Besides, which sounds better is a pointless question anyway because sound is a subjective thing. This is just an excuse to get people fighting in the comments about this stupid issue.
The Turbo sounds really good, but nothing beats the NA
Is the second one the NA?
I have to applaud Porsche for making the 3.0L turbo sound as good as it does, but NA always. The 991.1 just sounds better, less muted, more raw, and then there's the induction noise, which is characteristic to the 911.
Exactly what I was going to say. 👍
I have a 991.1 C2S with the sports exhaust. Let me tell you, the sounds this car produces are surreal. It sounds so good. The 991.2 doesn't sound bad, but it's not even close to the 991.1.
i also have a 911 MK1 4S. The sound is real and raw. The turbo will always have a wistle and less reality in it.
Did you have any issues with the sports exhaust intermittently working? I think the changeover valves are being funky on my 991.1.
I don't think the new 911 sound that bad, actually it sound very good for a twin turbo engine!
Yes in fact in the New carrera they not keep the sport mode, with it the sound is much better
Yes... it sounds good "for a turbo engine".
+luca giglio They didn't keep sport mode?
ghost Silva they did
no in the new carrera they didn t, i have a friend that have and the sound u listen is on NORMAL mode
The 991 MK1 had a fantastic sound w/ the sports exhaust.
The new one istn't even 10% as good.
NA all the way!
they both sound incredible enough said
Naturally Aspirated is what my life is made of.
Natural aspirated for me please!
991 feels fantastic when revved out, the sound is glorious as well.
991 GTS all the way !!!
NA sounds better (especially with a sport exhaust). Turbo goes faster. I'll still pick a GT3 :-P
The .2 911 sounds decent, but the .1 GTS just has a raspier/raw mechanical growl. The .2 is very impressive performance wise though with it's 3.4s 0-60 for the non-S version alone.
NA any day
Natural aspirated 100%
Doesn't sound as good, but hey, it's still pure Porsche sound. Plus every generation sounds different! It has a 964 feel to it
I always thought this. Having always loved Porsches and the legend of the Turbo! Porsche are the king of flat 6's. still competing and dominating with there 3.0 and 3.8 litres.
N/A ALL THE WAY! Porsche added about 70lbs. of extra exhaust tubing to make it sound as close as a N/A Engine as possible. Think about that!
Naturally aspirated!
N/A with the crackling sports exhaust.
The NA sounds raspy in revs but turbo has nice whistle to it when spooling up.
Swings and roundabouts...
The turbo spool does sound pretty cool knowing it's about to launch you
So what are they going to called they new Porsche 911 turbo? Porsche 911 super turbo and Super Turbo S?
3.8 sound better
Naturally aspirated boxers (especially 6cyls) just sound the best. You can't beat em.
n/a all the way

The NA PSE does crackle and make pop sounds too in Sport Plus Mode.

So why the 992 911 turbo s doesn't sound like this turbo engine?
Atmo always sound better, but turbo torque for the win!
They both have the wrong gear box.
I'm tempted to buy the 991 NA, more as an investment car really as it would be the last NA 911. In terms of ownership, is either more reliable for long term engine health?
I'll have that na rasp over a purring car every day of the week
If we do blind picks, we may have a surprising result.
No comparison. One sounds like my ass after a night drinking, the other the devils chariot
Both
While the NA of course sounds better, as the others say still fantastic sound on the 991.2. Good Porsche did not go the BMW route sound wise as with the E92M3 to FXXM3/M4.
NA sounds way better than turbo.
idk why but the turbocharged sounds better lmao

3.0t....3.8a...awesome
Flat six all day long.
Kesini gara2 om Mobi VS Bang Arief Muh..
N/A all the way, turbo's suck for sound!
There is kind of 'tail' or 'shadow'-sound of 3.0 turbo, which is a bit annoying. I would not like to listen to that bugging sound everyday. N/A sound is pure and clean because it is natural.
naturally aspirated - no contest - bring it back and #### the EU

Turbo sounds better? Clearly you haven't driven either car.
Non capisco perché non hai messo la modalità sport sulla carrera nuova, a suono è tutta un'altra cosa e gli dà un culo alla gts
Turbo sound like a fart shit..! Aspirated engine for ever
Wow and the new 992 is just pure trash
Long live 991.1
