That would be the best way. If a person can only plug the two ends together don't forget to use electrical tape to seal off the connection so there's no leak at the crack (where the connectors come together).
Of course the only surefire way to make sure the electricity stays absolutely fresh is to have the cord plugged in while the other end soaks in Seafoam. That's a hot tip for you.

Another tip about mower batteries. Make sure the acid in the battery is to top level. Place a 1 amp charger to it with a timer to give it a small 1/2 hour charge every day. It will not over charge & it will be ready to go next spring. Super easy !
WD 40 is named from Water displacement on the fortieth try. Was designed to keep moisture off of our Ballistic missiles in the silo's. Works on just about anything. A very great product.

Cris puts it in everything, crankcase ;gas tank ; transmission, he even adds it to his "blinker fluid". He claims it smooths out the "blinking" action! I always take the time to drain gas tank fuel line and carburetor bowl especially on things like my power washer that I might use two or three times a year I do this after each time
I use that pump saver after every time I use it which is only a couple times a year. I've had my pressure washer almost 20 years now and it still pumps as good as the day I bought it. I highly recommend that stuff.
In Oregon (probably other states too) we have “clear” gasoline, it’s ethanol free right from the pump at the gas station. That’s what many people use in their small engines.
Yeah, at $5/gal or more! Cheaper to just use regular gas, and dump out the 50 cents worth that's left after the last time of the season, or only run the ethanol free stuff for the last fill of the season.
Tarryls wd40 trick on the snow blower works great for summarizing the snow blower, put the red straw on and spray it up in there through the carb bowl till it drips out after shutting off fuel and draining the bowl.
Great stuff. I use liquid wd40 and diesel fuel 1/2 each mixture for lots of things. The years getting tar out of my dump bed taught me the value of diesel fuel and so it just made sense to add the liquid wd 40 for lubrication... There's your dinner. :)
Gotta watch for Marine 2 cycle oil vs. air cooled Taryl. Big difference between those also. One is not formulated for air cooled engines. Also, the new formula Sta-Bil 360 degree also protects the dead air space in tanks, carbs and fuel lines where Seafoam doesn't. I'm a HUGE fan and supporter of Seafoam as well, but with the new formula Sta-Bil 360 degree protection, it's worth giving it a fair shake. Zip~

I've ran 'outboard' 2 cycle oil in everything I've owned all my working life....ain't blowed a motor up yet. My old man used 30w in our power products lawnmower when I was a kid.....so did everybody else. Smoked like a freight train..but that was normal. I'm not against modern stuff...but you'll have to have more than 50 years experience to prove to me that 2 cycle outboard oil...you know, that blue stuff....will destroy a lawnmower or chainsaw engine. Perfectly fine for a $8,000 outboard but not for a $289 chainsaw! Can't prove it by me.

Just store the snowblowers and leaf vacs with tanks full and Sta Bil 360 or Marine Sta Bil in off season. Been doing it 40+ years and they always start right up when needed. Used in all my muscle cars and mowers too never a problem.
Another thing with batteries. Keep the top of the battery and the terminals clean and free from corrosion. The dirt and acid on top will discharge a battery. Very good video.

i was taught years ago that it takes 90 days for gas to start turning to laquer and the biggest problem i run into now is ppl do the drain thing on 2cycle and the remaining fuel evaps and leaves the oil to clog stuff up

I have used seafoam a couple of years now with no issues in the spring. As a matter of fact bought some the other day gotta get some fresh gas fill em up and load em full of seamfoam is what I usually do.
many 2 cycle engines that have primer bulbs circulate fuel threw the carb and storing those is supper easy. Sea foam is not harmful to gaskets at all and there's been tests to prove it. I dump gas from tank into a can and use it else ware to keep the can clean. Then put 1 ounce into the 2 cycle tank, prime it threw the carb, dump excess, then start engine with full choke and shut it off. Clears carb, lines, and fogs the engine in 4 steps (sea foam is good lubricant too)👍
There's been an update to this video where Taryl does a (12) engine fuel treatment experiment with various of these "products". None of them work well with the sole exception of VP fuel otherwise known as high -octane, non-ethanol fuel. The conclusion was no matter the fuel treatment, the ethanol added to gasoline is the culprit of petroleum "gelling" in the carburetor float bowl causing plugged jets. In my opinion, the only product here that I use is seafoam for cleaning purposes only and at immediate use. I would not store any of this stuff mixed with regular pump fuel. If you've got old fuel that's 2-4 years old, best to decant the water from the fuel, filter the fuel for any solids, and mix a bit of seafoam to raise the octane and run it immediately. You'll notice that power equipment will run through that stuff real quick since its garbage fuel that's really not worth saving (but then what do you do with it?).

I studied marine engine repair. We were taught that if an engine is designed for 87 octane, there is no benefit to running 91 octane. Old carburetor engines actually run worse. The computer in newer fuel injection engines adjust to the higher octane so it does not hurt anything. You do, however, pay more for nothing.
I'm glad I took Ronnie's advice and bought "Pharro Ronnie's small engine storage pills." Based on ancient egyptian formulars discovered recently on his small engine research trip to Egypt. 2 tablets in the oil and its guarenteed to start years later...even with 2 thousand year old gas. Thanks Ronnie....I don't fear the first mowing next month...no worries!!!
I bought a brand new Craftsman snowblower in 1998 and it was always tricky to start and ran a bit rough imho. Since 2012, I started using Seafoam in all my gas (adding to the 5 gallon Jerry cans as T.Dactyl mentions). I leave the gas in the snowblower over winter, and it runs better today than it did new. I will follow your advice for sure, especially the WD40 into the carb if storing it dry WinterpegMan
As far as cold cranking amps goes,just divide the cc capacity of the engine by 16 to get the cold cranking amp rating for an engine. I bought a 270 CCA battery to kick over a 3 litre engine every once in a while,so its capacity of 2962 divided by 16 equals 185 cold cranking amps,so a 270 cold cranking amp battery is plenty to start that engine, I only paid $59 AUD for it & trickle charge it about once a month & make sure the electrolyte doesn't fall below the plates. I've seen motorcycle batteries with a 300 CCA rating fitted into ride on lawnmowers which is plenty to kick a 1.8 litre Corolla engine over let alone than a 500 CC ride on lawn mower engine. My mother inherited her Corolla from her mother which had a 300 CCA battery fitted from brand new, it lasted for a bit over 9 years when starting a 1.8 litre engine. It's been good luck for me finding a large CCA battery to start my 5.7 litre V8 engine because Holden make them to fit a standard sized 550 CCA battery & a 900 CCA battery of the same size is available both costs a few hundred $$$'s & is hard to find, I couldn't afford it. I was doing well to get 3 years out of a 480 CCA battery in that car. My grandfather managed to fit a car battery into into his old ride on lawnmower & it was cheaper than buying a motorcycle battery, along with fuel filters which were car filters so he saved money on them. I did that with a GXV530 16 HP Honda twin cylinder engine on a Toro ride on lawn mower, a Ryco Z142A filter fits it although I have to add more oil to the engine. Fuel stabilizer is good for storing ethanol based fuel but I'd turn the tap off & drain the carby float bowl on lawn equipment before storing it.
You can go to auto parts store and get an outboard motor fuel hand bulb pump for the fuel tanks . You can get clear vinyl hose and the pump bulbs come in 1/4 , 5/16 and 3/8 hose size . I’ll use the 3/8 one to suck out radiator cores before opening drain cock and removing bottom hose so it’s less of a mess to deal with, is just one of the many things you can do with pump bulb.
Sta-Bil has been worth its weight in gold on my equipment. Sea foam doesn’t stabilize gas. I don’t think it does much of anything other than separate you from the money in your wallet.
Taryl. I have a Generac and I ran all the fuel out of it for the winter and the next spring the entire inside of the fuel tank was rusted. Thank you, Generac.
Taryl, I've been telling my customers for years to store equipment with at least a mid grade if not premium gasoline. Also to keep the fuel tank at least 3/4 full ( leave room for expansion ). I tell them if they can, start and run the equipment for 10 minutes to burn the gasoline out of the carburetor to replenish it with fresh fuel from the tank. I noticed while picking up equipment at customers that their gas containers are missing vent caps or have broken spouts...the gas is crap out of the pump, leaving containers open doesn't help. Also, I drain equipment with 3/8" fuel line and a battery filler rubber bulb tool to start a siphon. Thank you for another great vid, Joe
All very good tips also gas goes bad faster in smaller fuel tanks I think if your not going to drain the fuel top it up with fuel with stabilizer in it.

I believe leaving a metal tank like, on a generator, empty, will cause it to rust out quicker than if it was full of fuel. Condensation will rust out a empty metal tank quicker than a tank that is full of gas. It is all about having as little air in the tank as possible. Condensation loves air.
At 18:45, is it best to change oil in riding mower at spring startup, or autumn, when putting the mower up for winter?? it's time to make that decision. thanks!
For the longest time here in Oklahoma. The highest octane fuel we could get was 89 octane. Now we MIGHT, just might find a 7-11 with 91 octane. Ethanol is the #1 selling fuel here, because of the price difference between non-Ethonal and 10% Ethanol fuel (usually a .40+ price difference)
What I do is as the season comes to the end I start adding sea foam to my fuel can. the generator I shut off the fuel line and run it when it starts to die I slowly add the choke and it will run all the fuel out of the carb . sea foam in the tank .
Predator generators from harbor freight, make sure you shut off the fuel if you dont the carb will let it drain, i got a brand new one, over winter incase of outages, half filled the tank and ran it for 3 hours like the manual says to run it in. Went back out the next few days to run it again for run in and the tank was empty, the carb is messed up already and only runs at half choke, its only run for 3 hours, has been protected from weather and never had a load on it, so make sure you shut off the fuel when you stop it or the tank drains through the air filter because the gas tank pressure forces the needle valve open.
I swear by sta-bil, I haven't had a problem since I started using it, but I use the pink stuff. It even fixed my surging riding mower. You don't know what really works until you have a problem, unless of course you use one of these and then never have a problem. The next motor you have come in that is surging run some sta-bil thru it and see if I'm lying.
I don't think you made the point but a lot of guys make the mistake of trying to add stabilizer or fuel treatment to old gas. The stabilizers and so forth only work to make the gas longevity on new gas
I usually try to use up the fuel in the machine at the end of the season and then I mix up a gas can full of new fuel with stabil added. Just enough fuel to get the engine to run for a few min without running dry, then I know the carb is protected for the winter. You should touch on running ethanol fuel in your chainsaws or other high performance 2 stroke engines. Ethanol settles to the bottom of the tank with the water and first start your running on pure ethanol with no oil equals burnt up saw. Seen this a couple times. Always keep stabilized fuel in the emergency generator and swap it out into my wifes car every 6 months.
Another thing that kills starting-type batteries is completely discharging them. They won't take a charge well (if at all) after that. Disconnecting the cable helps prevent this.
Yep, extreme heat and extreme cold. The dashboard on my 1986 Toyota pickup cracked, on a VERY cold day a couple years ago. I woulda thought HEAT would do that, but NO.
I believe this guy later did some tests and found that Stabil worked better than Seafoam... So maybe watch that video, or series of videos... Also: If you can get non-oxy gas maybe use that at least at the end of the season.
I bring my equipment, besides my zero turn, and my gas cans into my garage for the winter. Also my snowblower stays in garage for winter with the gas. When weather breaks, everything goes back to the shed
I fill every thing with mixed 40 to one hightest Ethel free fuel with stable soon to be sea foam run it for a few minutes spay it with WD on the out side after I clean it up change all the 4 stroke oil if it's 4 stroke and spay fluid film under all my mower decks after they drug from pressure washing them off .I like the mixed fuel in all in the fall puts a film of oil in the mufflers and cylinders .

I used the turkey baster in garage, wife saw it an brot back to kitchen. a few days layer used it to baste a chicken big-ass 7 lb. oven roaster, baster exploded.
I dreed up a ferw engines with good ol'Marv, got the piston down just enough for a few ounces and let it sit, comeback a few dys later and slowly crank her or a good chunk of 2x4 on piston and GENTLY tapping it. . .
Is there anything one can do if they did not do the proper storage practices with their equipment? Yes, I am talking about myself. IE: carb choke cleaner in the carb, WD-40 in the carb, etc to get the thing running until one has the time to properly clean out and fix said starting issues. Barring spark plug, etc is working correctly. Just something to jump start even if running rough. Anything to clean out the carb without tearing it down, and eating up the rubber gaskets, etc inside the carb.
In order to keep the electricity fresh in an extension cord, plug the ends together to keep it sealed up during the winter...
Keeps it circulating too.
Just soak the cords in Stabil or Seafoam over the winter and they'll be just fine!

I've never used a fuel stabilizer, EVER! what I do for winter lay up is mid season is go start up all my small engines and run them for 5-10 minutes.

I find that planning for winder helps too. If you know it's late in the season, don't fill the tank up to the top. Then there is less to drain.

The only thing I put into any of my equipment is. No ethanol gasoline. It is at the pump where I get my gas

Engines produce the most power using the lowest octane possible without causing preignition (pinging).

It's been good luck for me finding a large CCA battery to start my 5.7 litre V8 engine because Holden make them to fit a standard sized 550 CCA battery & a 900 CCA battery of the same size is available both costs a few hundred $$$'s & is hard to find, I couldn't afford it.
I was doing well to get 3 years out of a 480 CCA battery in that car.
My grandfather managed to fit a car battery into into his old ride on lawnmower & it was cheaper than buying a motorcycle battery, along with fuel filters which were car filters so he saved money on them.
I did that with a GXV530 16 HP Honda twin cylinder engine on a Toro ride on lawn mower, a Ryco Z142A filter fits it although I have to add more oil to the engine.
Fuel stabilizer is good for storing ethanol based fuel but I'd turn the tap off & drain the carby float bowl on lawn equipment before storing it.
You can go to auto parts store and get an outboard motor fuel hand bulb pump for the fuel tanks . You can get clear vinyl hose and the pump bulbs come in 1/4 , 5/16 and 3/8 hose size . I’ll use the 3/8 one to suck out radiator cores before opening drain cock and removing bottom hose so it’s less of a mess to deal with, is just one of the many things you can do with pump bulb.

Sta-Bil has been worth its weight in gold on my equipment. Sea foam doesn’t stabilize gas. I don’t think it does much of anything other than separate you from the money in your wallet.

Taryl, I've been telling my customers for years to store equipment with at least a mid grade if not premium gasoline. Also to keep the fuel tank at least 3/4 full ( leave room for expansion ). I tell them if they can, start and run the equipment for 10 minutes to burn the gasoline out of the carburetor to replenish it with fresh fuel from the tank. I noticed while picking up equipment at customers that their gas containers are missing vent caps or have broken spouts...the gas is crap out of the pump, leaving containers open doesn't help. Also, I drain equipment with 3/8" fuel line and a battery filler rubber bulb tool to start a siphon.

All very good tips also gas goes bad faster in smaller fuel tanks I think if your not going to drain the fuel top it up with fuel with stabilizer in it.

Keep an empty tank and keep some fuel in cans. Put the fuel from the cans in the car and replenish. You always have fresh fuel for the generator.

I believe leaving a metal tank like, on a generator, empty, will cause it to rust out quicker than if it was full of fuel. Condensation will rust out a empty metal tank quicker than a tank that is full of gas. It is all about having as little air in the tank as possible. Condensation loves air.

Have you heard of K100 fuel stabilizer?
For the longest time here in Oklahoma. The highest octane fuel we could get was 89 octane. Now we MIGHT, just might find a 7-11 with 91 octane. Ethanol is the #1 selling fuel here, because of the price difference between non-Ethonal and 10% Ethanol fuel (usually a .40+ price difference)

What I do is as the season comes to the end I start adding sea foam to my fuel can. the generator I shut off the fuel line and run it when it starts to die I slowly add the choke and it will run all the fuel out of the carb . sea foam in the tank .
Hi Taryl, I have 6 yrs on a motorcycle battery just by using a battery tender a few days a month.
What do you think about putting a bottle of 2 cycle oil in your 2 cycle engine and priming it through before storing it.
I fear that empowered with all this knowledge, Slippers may seek to open his own shop.

Predator generators from harbor freight, make sure you shut off the fuel if you dont the carb will let it drain, i got a brand new one, over winter incase of outages, half filled the tank and ran it for 3 hours like the manual says to run it in. Went back out the next few days to run it again for run in and the tank was empty, the carb is messed up already and only runs at half choke, its only run for 3 hours, has been protected from weather and never had a load on it, so make sure you shut off the fuel when you stop it or the tank drains through the air filter because the gas tank pressure forces the needle valve open.
I swear by sta-bil, I haven't had a problem since I started using it, but I use the pink stuff. It even fixed my surging riding mower. You don't know what really works until you have a problem, unless of course you use one of these and then never have a problem. The next motor you have come in that is surging run some sta-bil thru it and see if I'm lying.
I don't think you made the point but a lot of guys make the mistake of trying to add stabilizer or fuel treatment to old gas. The stabilizers and so forth only work to make the gas longevity on new gas
I usually try to use up the fuel in the machine at the end of the season and then I mix up a gas can full of new fuel with stabil added. Just enough fuel to get the engine to run for a few min without running dry, then I know the carb is protected for the winter. You should touch on running ethanol fuel in your chainsaws or other high performance 2 stroke engines. Ethanol settles to the bottom of the tank with the water and first start your running on pure ethanol with no oil equals burnt up saw. Seen this a couple times. Always keep stabilized fuel in the emergency generator and swap it out into my wifes car every 6 months.
Another thing that kills starting-type batteries is completely discharging them. They won't take a charge well (if at all) after that. Disconnecting the cable helps prevent this.
Yep, extreme heat and extreme cold. The dashboard on my 1986 Toyota pickup cracked, on a VERY cold day a couple years ago. I woulda thought HEAT would do that, but NO.

Why was Star-Tron fuel stabilizer not mentioned? I proved this works. Had fuel in can for 2 yrs, used it and no issues.
I believe this guy later did some tests and found that Stabil worked better than Seafoam...
So maybe watch that video, or series of videos...

If you can get non-oxy gas maybe use that at least at the end of the season.

All my equipment gets star tron. Never had issues
I bring my equipment, besides my zero turn, and my gas cans into my garage for the winter. Also my snowblower stays in garage for winter with the gas.
When weather breaks, everything goes back to the shed
I fill every thing with mixed 40 to one hightest Ethel free fuel with stable soon to be sea foam run it for a few minutes spay it with WD on the out side after I clean it up change all the 4 stroke oil if it's 4 stroke and spay fluid film under all my mower decks after they drug from pressure washing them off .I like the mixed fuel in all in the fall puts a film of oil in the mufflers and cylinders .

I dreed up a ferw engines with good ol'Marv, got the piston down just enough for a few ounces and let it sit, comeback a few dys later and slowly crank her or a good chunk of
2x4 on piston and GENTLY tapping it. . .
I think 2 stroke oil makes the best stabilizer.

I'm guilty of just running my stuff empty. That's a great tip about draining the carb and using wd40 in it.
I go to my local municipal airport and buy aviation fuel, 104 octane, $5.00 per gallon, but cheaper than canned gas.
Av gas is worse than fuel for attracting moisture & for the price not worth the gain as you need higher compression engines built to suit the fuel
I have my own avgas at home, been running my small engines on avgas(100LL) for years. Works great

Yes, I am talking about myself.
IE: carb choke cleaner in the carb, WD-40 in the carb, etc to get the thing running until one has the time to properly clean out and fix said starting issues. Barring spark plug, etc is working correctly. Just something to jump start even if running rough. Anything to clean out the carb without tearing it down, and eating up the rubber gaskets, etc inside the carb.
