About this episode:
In this episode, I traveled to Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, to attend a European fair called the Radvanský jarmok. This traditional European fair is dubbed “the fair of all fairs,” so I wanted to include this unique cultural festival in Europe in my travel vlog.
This is the 365th occurrence of this European festival. I traveled eight hours by bus, admiring the Slovakian landscapes, to get to the 2023 Radvanský jarmok. As this was my first European fair experience, I was surprised to see many crafts and artisans like blacksmiths, wood carvers, sewists and more creating their products right at their booths.
The views of the city and traditional Slovak folk costumes, or Kroj, helped me imagine medieval times. I went to the Banská Bystrica town castle and drank beer with some locals. I also ate Slovakian street food such as Langoš and Čerstvé Zemiakové Placky. The fair helped me appreciate traditional Slovakian culture. I got to listen to a lot of great Slovakian music as well.
Background:
The Radvanský jarmok fair in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, is a vibrant and historic cultural event that encapsulates the essence of Slovakian tradition and heritage. Dating back to the 17th century, this annual fair has become a cherished celebration of local culture, commerce, and entertainment.
The fair typically takes place in late August and attracts both locals and tourists alike. Its name, "Radvanský jarmok," is derived from the Radvan Valley, where it originated. The event features a colorful marketplace where vendors from across Slovakia showcase their artisanal crafts, traditional foods, and handmade goods. Visitors can browse through a diverse array of products, from handmade pottery to delicious Slovakian delicacies.
In addition to shopping opportunities, this European festival offers a lively atmosphere filled with music, dance performances, and cultural exhibitions. Folk music and dance groups from the region take center stage, providing a glimpse into the rich Slovakian folklore and traditions.
About Travel Lord On Location:
After living and working abroad for over 15 years, I've decided to share my experience and passion for travel, films, books and humor with others worldwide in my new travel vlog. This type of travel diary explores different countries through their own cinema, literature, events and places.
This travel vlog highlights some of the best destinations and attractions the Earth has to offer. But! Unlike other travel vlogs, here you'll know when things don't go according to plan. While traveling leads to unique experiences, new knowledge and fun opportunities, an equal amount of mishaps, scams, problems and general weirdness comes with it.
I hope my travel vlog encourages people to leave their comfort zones, learn a bit about a country they've never heard of, read a book from an author whose name they can't pronounce and flip on a movie with subtitles. Join me on my travel adventures and partake in the cultural exploration, hidden gems and sightseeing that comes with it!

365th! Holy cow! also pelegrin falcon is a pretty popular turkish name: doğan.
this was AWESOME! How cool to sit down with folks with whom you share no common language. Overall it gave me Renn Faire vibes for some reason. I loved this!
Good to know! Haha
forgot to mention google translate lets you speak into your phone (have someone speak into your phone) and it translates their language into english for you. We had to use it quite a bit, at school especially. Not a perfect translations but gives you the gist. Also that dude's phone is one I had back in ....2002 I think! I am pretty sure that's when they came out!@@TravelLordOnLoc
I was roaring with laughter at your conversation with your beer mates. I’ve had many of those myself.
Btw the sideburns are filling in nicely.
Those guys were great! Finally found out what they said thanks to the comments
Banská Bystrica ❤
It's a beautiful city!

I love how 9 out of 10 youtubers never google the pronunciation of the Slovak cities they visit 😅 Apart from that, fabulous video.
I did google the pronunciation hahaha
4:30 well that made me giggle over here, what the hell lol..but heaven knows I would snatch a shovel around if any bloke tried to do that to me 🤨😄 think I would visit Slovakia just for the craftsmen's work 👌💯 Thank you for the great tour ✨
Hahaha yeah it was pretty surprising! I only saw some young kids with the spoons though so that’s good
👍
Thanks!
You friends ask if you do drink beer with foam as there is no foam on beer in the USA and UK. And if you do know/understand slovak Dobry den greeting Good day), other said you doesnt anything. Then yes (ano) you know. Lady said and spat (sleep). Guy thank you (dakujem). Then talk to the lady, that they will lear you like someons kids :).
The guy in whit shirt said they are pensioners. Like Biden. Old.
Then he said bratia (brothers) and his wife.
Krušovice = čechy ment as czech beer.
Ah great! I was curious about what was said there. It was a fun time hanging out with them anyway
Also they said they are old as Biden. No politics involved. Just friendly talk. I was quitte amussed by them.
Tell me brother better slovakia or hungary overall? When u think
Very different places and I can’t judge because I only spent a few days in both. I’d go back to both places though!
its sad that old people cant speak english but its not their fault, because in communism it was not really possible to learn english...
in that beer location they try to said, guys are brothers and by zena he meant it was his wife... and about beer they try to said in america you dont have beer with foam on the top :)
Even though communication was difficult I had a great time with them! Thanks for the help!
Why would that be "sad"? The elders know, for example, Russian. It is sad that young people do not know Russian or Slovak properly. :-) If you didn't understand the irony, I'll tell you that I meant it ironically. Let's appreciate what we have in Slovakia
nothing sad about it , they had no reason to learn english , not everyone needs english and also they are older generation so english was not even that important when they were younger , also they are in Slovakia not in an english speaking country
Finally something that is not bratislava 😂
Hahaha yeah I wanted to see some other places in Slovakia
@@TravelLordOnLocWhat a bravery to sit and talk with seniors with no English you just killed it
@@vladimircuchta7427 Hahaha thanks. Those guys were great. I could've hung out with them all day
Nice video 😊
