IONIQ 5 Euro roadtrip part 2: Italy to England with a grumpy family

- Опубликовано: 28 июл 2024
- After spending Easter with the Italian family in Rome, it was time to make the long drive back to England in the wonderful IONIQ 5.
The electric journey to Italy (just Andrew and the dog) was relatively easy apart from Brexit-related issues and endless toll booths. Will it be any harder with the wife and daughter?
Get ready for some beautiful charging stops, good food, a soup recipe, and probably a bit of swearing. Sorry.

I've said it before, you are a man of infinite patience
🤣🤣🤣🤣 agreed! Tbf on the other hand it must be pretty annoying having your husband doing his little EV vids to camera whilst you're trying to enjoy your holiday.
To say we've been waiting for this video is an understatement
Easter, right?
And now we know there will be another roatrip video, this time in a Tesla... Another film to look out for.
@@AndyBrandt ferrari next lol
This is a proper family trip. Full of fun, drama, sights, food, arguments and edutainment. Thank you.
I love how in the middle of what you would assume to be an EV-video we learn of a different type of pizza and get a whole recipe for kid-friendly soup. Wonderful stuff
Ready steady cook with flaviana
1 hour 17 minutes, almost a feature film. Loved it!
Thanks Carl!
Great to see the joys of a family holiday. Love how Flaviana' s hair is always perfect but yours gets more of the wild man look as the journey progresses
My transformation into Stig of the Dump happens quite quickly on these long journeys!
@@MrEVshowing your age 😂
Your wife reminds me of my mum. My mum, Roman born of Sicillian stock, lived in the Uk for 40 years working as a teacher and married to my dad who was a Geordie. My mum is utterly bonkers in a very italian way. Charmingly so. She is now in her late 70s and retired to the Lazio countryside. We lost my dad recently. It's good that you don't edit her random waffling out. Years from now you'll be able to show people the she was always like this! Non cambiare mai!
The anticipation for this has exceeded that for Avatar 2, and it did NOT disappoint.
Future videos have to include recipes and Flavians two word film reviews. Practical advice for all the family. Love it.
Do you want to plug it in?
Mrs.EV - no.
😂
Mrs EV never fails 😂😂
I can't ever let my wife see Mr EV. She would totally agree with Flaviana that we need a yatch. The money to make the idea come true is the bit we are missing.
Yes, my wife says that too. But not allowed to spend over 40k on a car, but won't consider a yacht under 15 million....
...so that's a never I'm guessing.
just get something that drives like a boat
@@pumpuppthevolume and has the same braking ability.
@@pumpuppthevolume yeah an IoniQ 5 lol
I know I'm late but I just found your channel. Thanks for taking us with you. Bloody hell the Ioniq5 is incredible it seems. It looked pretty stress free apart from the ridiculously expensive tolls and tunnels.
Yeah - amazing machine. I miss it daily!
At last someone else that thinks coffee should be drinkable when you get it, not a hour later :)
It’s pretty easy to understand the need to rant after a long trip, with everyone tired and grumpy! I do hope that after you all returned home, rested and got some much-needed space from each other, Flaviana is able to see that EVs are not just reducing local air pollution, but a part of the effort to reduce climate changing emissions. There is a little girl in the back seat whose future is at stake. That’s worth a little inconvenience.
Bravo!
Absolutely brilliant Andrew you deserve a medal. So sorry the Ioniq5 has gone. Your videos persuaded me to get an Ultimate AWD. Such a brilliant EV. Good luck with the Muskmobile. I’ll carry on subscribing. Keep safe and well 🍀
The Muskmobile was temporary - it’s already gone back! Getting something else in October. I do miss the IONIQ 5 though. Wonderful machine.
@@MrEV Will you go back to ICE?
@@MesoScale NO!
Brilliant video. The relationship your family has is great, very real. I would've only have got 600 miles for the cost of your whole trip. Keep up the good work.
Thanks James!
Best Movie I’ve watched in a long time.
High praise! Thanks so much, Jake.
love how the dog bolts from the kid!
It's nice to see the Ioniq 5 again!
This could not have come at a better time. House mate is watching Strictly Come Dancing, a programme I hate, so I am watching your quality content, think you so much, saved the day !!
Excellent. Well worth the wait. I felt the grumpiness was well within acceptable limits. Not often you get a road movie with soup recipes!
The best video I’ve seen in ages , your wife is a star 🎉
I could write an essay on the benefits of your trip. But just the pearls that come from Flaviana are worth the investment of your time to watch this. How Andrew copes with the critique is beyond me. Brilliant
I don’t think she accounted for the gas stops you would have had to make on this trip.
I drove from Copenhagen to Lake Como again this year and when I drive by myself, I find that I need more break time than the car needs charge time.
Thats the thing right. People MAKE it an inconvenience because they don't plan well. I myself don't like driving longer than 2 hours straight. I need a break. So I align it with my ev and the charging. 2 hours is roughly 150 miles. So it goes from 100 to maybe 50.. and then it takes half an hour to charge while I rest. I see no issue with that.
@@koek1122 Just a pain when you do stop, expecting to charge, and no joy as either full of other people or broken. So random.
Amazing 😍😂 your a great family man.your wife is very difficult to live with sometimes 😅but she is great and funny 👍 must be fun to live with😊
Another interesting video, looking forward to more. Hope we don’t have to wait so long next time
I'm putting this video on regular replays - love the fly-on-the-wall style (or should that be fly-on-the windscreen?). Now I'm off to make Minestrone. Huge thanks for this long-awaited real-life drama! Bring us more...soon!
Loved the soup interlude! Will be trying that with my two girls and if it goes well, may send an extra thank you your way! I've watched quite a few EV road trip videos and this is a masterclass, thank you for sharing, you are all lovely. P.S. Would be interested in a link or spelling of the pizza place mentioned.
Thanks very much Will! The pizza place is called Magna Pizza in Via Magnagrecia, Rome.
Flaviana speaks straight from the heart and that is always fresh, gives a twist, new insights cause I can remember once she was talking about the seatbelt and how comfortable one specific had been for her as she describes the usual situation of a woman with her child and how often she has to stop and look for the child, why the Fiat 500 for her had been not a great car cause the seatbelts in the back were useless.
It is such a nice combination of british politeness and italian freshness especially when her hands start to speak louder or more than she herself.
Love these moments when she comes in from the side and brings total different points of views for example in the A2A heatpump video(s) cause she has different points she looks and cares for then Andrew, quite often most surprising moments and details I would not have thought about.
But you whole long distance trip was full of unused battery capacity cause you arrive at quite high SOC and had lots of charges therefore even though you had the ABRP app as your route travel and charge planner that can provide a lot better charging points cause if you have still 42% at the ionity charger left you should be able to reach the next ionity too considering 42% x 60 kWh or more equals about 100 km of range left to make it to the next ionity charger.
We have a lot of fun if you both are discussing a topic from all the different pov and considerations that cover something so complex like an A2A heatpump fully - still remember the italian judgement about the Toshiba Heatpump manufacturer support she had called for her basic questions and she had been quite unhappy with their stupid answers to ask you local dealer or workshop to get the answers - which usually offers 5 to 10 brands and is not capable to answer all questions to 1 brand and 1 specific heatpump model.
Fantastico video Bellissimo 👍🏼 apparently i had a smile on my face watching it … and i forgot how bloody great that Project 45 looks !
Thank you kindly! And yes, the car’s a stunner. At least you had one for a bit!
What a great blog, thankyou!. I just loved to interaction between you and your wife and the points of view on both sides and your daughter taking it all in. There is only one thing for it;... a hydrogen powered car. Haha!
Lovely stuff Mr Till. 😊👍🏾You (and your family vids) played a large part in my deciding to get an EV. I've had my Ioniq 5 for five months now, and I absolutely love it. Can't see myself ever undertaking journeys as long as you have, but if I did, it would have to be in my Ioniq 5. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to seeing whatever you guys get up to next. 👍🏾 Stay safe.
Thanks very much Tony!
Likewise helped inspire me buy an ID.3 too - and drive to Viareggio!
i have to hand it to you Andrew you always see the positive in the EV future well done for your staying power i would have given up ages ago !!!!
There have always been more pros and cons for me, so that helps. I appreciate that’s not the case for everyone!
I thought the sequel would never drop. Thank goodness it has🎉
Andrew! You really uploaded it! 🎉
Wish I could 🔨the like button a trillion times!!
Thank you!
Thanks! Took long enough! 😀
Thank you Andrew. I've just watched parts 1 & 2 at your Italian trip.
I have Italian family, travelled to Italy many times in ICE cars before COVID.
We took many routes, though mostly refuelling in Luxembourg, it was so cheap.
Crossing the Italian boarder I favoured the Gottardo tunnel as it's free, crossing into Italy by Lake Como is beautiful, also the motorways round Milan a great fun!
My next trip will be in an IONIQ 5, due to be delivered in November. I nearly bought a Tesla as the driving and charging experience I know, would be a lot smoother driving to Italy. Though I nearly injured myself when I fell off my chair after being quoted the car insurance premium!
I got some good tips from your video, thank you.
I've been driving electric for near on two years now. When talking to people about the pros and cons of electric cars, I find they fall into two categories, the askers and the staters.
The askers I'm happy to have a conversation, they ask question of interest and possibly thinking of converting to an electric car.
The staters. I don't engage with. They will ALWAYS have a reason why electric cars are rubbish. Engaging with these people is just a waste of energy.
Enid Blyton does great kids books
Noddy, Secret Seven and Famous Five.
Timeless.
Keep up the great videos and recipes.
My daughter has read them all except Noddy I think - wonderful books!
Update 2: I laughed out loud when this became a cooking show. I expected her to just name the things she puts in the soup. But when the videos started, milk came out of my nose.
Thanks for another lovely video, Andrew. Just one point, I don't like the stop button on any charger, someone could press it while you are away from the car and you wouldn't know until you got back to the car! I like the Instavolt method of contactless credit card to start and stop the charging.
I just got my ioniq and also go to Lake Garda every year.. When I see how fast it charges, NO worries at all anymore :)
I /love/ your filming and editing style. The vignettes and moments that might otherwise be on the editing floor are perfect.
Well that was worth waiting for, what a lovely surprise! I started watching last night and finished this morning. Great fun, love the recipes Flaviana. We have no kids and can't use lardons (veggies only for us) so maybe just a little extra seasoning would be good I think.
Love the rant, we know you care about the climate really.🤪
Such good fun, can't wait for the next one...but we will of course...😂👍
A very good video, most enjoyable. Thank you.
Really enjoyed the video. Fun to watch, informative, and well made. Thank you.
Very informative video. I think I’ll be keeping my S-Class diesel for the time being, but I’d trade up my Mrs for an Italian one. Mrs EV is hilarious.
Watching your buttons being pressed. Very entertaining. Wives.. they do know what to target 😁
Brilliant video - so entertaining!
Amazing to see Viareggio in the late winter. Been going there in the summer since 1970. Have downloaded the remainder to watch on my 5 hour flight tomorrow. 👍
It must have looked a little more desolate than it does in summer? Have a safe flight!
I've been waiting for this!
Really enjoying this video, beautiful scenery mixed with food and great interaction between you and your wife. Its the first time ive seen your Zen like personage slip a bit at the start too, very funny. Love the strong opinions like “I hate pizza!” The car seems perfect for space, quietness and ease of charging for such a long journey too, you are convincing me to get hold of one now. Im half way through your video and im off for a recharge myself, catch the rest later, keep it up.
In the car with pets?! We have two dogs. One loves the car. The other not. The only way I can get my Corgi Jack mix, Paco, to relax in the car is give him a very long walk before going in the car. This helps a lot. You will want to walk your Baby for at least an hour each morning (while travelling) He will enjoy his ride much more. BTW, Your return trip is a GREAT video! Was good to see your EV family again!!🥰 Greetings from the Midwest of U.S.!!!
Thanks for the suggestion, Kathryn! That may explain why Baby seemed to sleep better on the trip going down to Italy as I think I gave longer walks then.
I love these vlogs, its a real family make a real journey warts and all, one thing I have taken from it is Italian women are hard to please!
Yeah, they are kind of spoilt brats in some way. But it is what it is.
What a joy to watch, Love all the views especially through the Alps !
Regarding the argument of EVs against petrol, some of the perks are beneficial for our kids. Fumes in petrol stations aren't good for them probably. If we're all driving EVs, they won't have to breath in so many particulates from cars travelling around us. Having breaks every few hours means safer driving as we're going to concentrate better and be less tired. An EV is generally safer as lower center of gravity and no engine taking up crumple area. I'm sure there's more. Think of the children! :D
I drove my EV from UK to the Alps. I love my EV but agree with Flaviana that EV charging is still inconvenient. Stopping to charge revolves around the car & placement of super fast chargers on the route. If there were banks of 150+kW chargers along all the motorways as commonly as petrol, it might be much better. If we can drive from 80/90% down to 10/15% EVERY time it would be great. But you have to stop to charge tactically - sometimes when the battery is still as high as 40%. I’ll be happier when I’m charging at 1MW and it takes 5 mins to get 200+ miles of range.
cycled past a petrol station today and I noticed the stink...can't wait for the day I never have to go near those sticky filthy places...
Unfortunately, much (definitely not all, but a significant portion) of that particulate matter comes from tire abrasion, meaning that the real way to solve the issue is to reduce tire abrasion.
I am missing the argument that driving an EV is way more climate friendly than an ICE car, depending on mileage and mix of energy. It also is 4 times more efficient.
@@joemcnicholas8687 its early days, but yes EVERY motorway service should have a bank of chargers...it will happen, perhaps another 5 years...
Really helpful video. I was watching out for Chademo chargers the whole time. I am doing Switzerland to Hampshire at Christmas in my 40Kw Leaf. I didn’t realise every Ionity in France has a Chademo plug. Also it was interesting to see the backtracking at ionity Barella. I have done the journey before. In an ICE it’s 12 hours, in the leaf it’s 20 hours. I agree with your wife, during school holidays, the added travel time is a pain the arse. Thanks for sharing though. It has helped me very much.
Ahhhhh, he had such a nice relaxed trip down to Italy! Lol
Good to see you back again
Came for the EV footage, stayed for Flaviana moaning about pizza. 🤣🤣🤣
Your dead-pan serious video makes me chuckle. The banter between you is so funny !
Loved it. What a beautiful family.
Loved your vid and your journey in your Ionia 5. Thanks
What fantastic video..
And I've no idea why it was recommended or why I watched it..
But bravo..💯👍💯👍
Thanks Mark!
Thank you for a brilliant video, the Ioniq 5 looks very comfortable when fully loaded and being driven on a very long drive.
It is! Thanks, John.
“Problem with the signal” hahahha. Loved that ! The Ionity stated that the problem was already reported to Ionity
I've just found Ur channel, as I am getting eNiro soon and I was looking for some common faults to be aware of. Ur 12V videos started to pop out like mad :)) Great channel, great EV journeys, great explainations! Travelling with grumpy family... yeah... talk to me ;)
All the best Sir! Thanks for testing e-Niro to the point, I am now 101% sold to it :)
Thank you! I’m considering getting another Niro actually!
I have my own Ioniq 5 arriving this week so great timing , brilliant video. 😊
Congratulations! Very exciting! Make sure you get the dealer to put on the latest update before you get it - another viewer has told me there's now battery preconditioning so when you navigate to a rapid charger, it makes sure you get fast speeds even in cold weather.
Thanks Andrew will do, I live in sunny Queensland Australia so not too many cold days thankfully.
Such a refreshing video
Great video love the family & the dog, my wife would agree with your wife, that’s the only way she gets me to eat vegetables, and i am 71😀 a very balanced video. Have to say I lean to your opinion, albeit haven’t ventured as far as you in my EV👍🏻
Brilliant video, Jamie Oliver would be proud.. lol. Thanks for sharing, a great family road trip.
love to watch this - as a family of 5 in a hybrid car, I often have to pre-book hotels as we cannot find somewhere (in budget) to accomodate us all, and mostly they do not have a type 2 charger near for a few hours of loading. I might get a full EV and this was a good idea of what to expect with stops.
The yacht shopping🛍 HAHAHA. Sell the ioniq because we can't afford, but let's get a yacht hahaha.
Brilliant ..thanks for sharing!
Beautiful video as always. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks so much!
Long wait for this one Andrew 👍👍👍
Miss EV saying "I couldn't care less" in Italian when you were telling your avid viewers how much battery you had when you arrived. She really is a mini Mrs EV sometimes 😆
Great been waiting for this only just put it on so hoping its as good as part 1 its my Daughters fav vid at mo she loves the bit when you catch your head on sun visor in Northern France at the toll booth
Less accidental slapstick comedy in this one but hopefully still a few funny moments!
Fantastic makes me want to do a log road trip have to made do with my mini trip in Oct From Hull to Rotterdam drive to Sunparks Belgium then Dunkirk to Calais back to Staffordshire in our Kona EV
Great video. We also love Jura great place to stop and charge.
Wow, secret seven, that's a blast from the past.
Andrew again Flaviana has everyone in our house laughing, a family trip across Europe descends into an introductory lesson to home cooking followed by an expert rant petrol versus electric all the way across France, superb, and the merits of Italian Pizza which according to Flaviana is just bread with condiments on top, excellent 1 hour 30 minute movie, actually watched it last night, better than netflix or Amazon, keep doing these please Andrew best wishes Gina and Pete Ioniq 5 owners.
Thanks so much!
Also that 30 secs *now cannot wait - thank you for brightening up my evening hahahaha
Thank you! I'm happy you enjoyed it!
As ever, informative and very amusing. Mr and Mrs EV are charming and a great double act in RUclips entertainment, although it has to be said that Mrs EV was obviously tired and consequently rather impatience towards the end of the trip. Bless her. I sort of understand, but do always have the bigger picture in my mind, at all times. Every little cut in CO2 emissions counts to help the global problem … and even now in the midst of the energy crisis EV’s are still significantly cheaper to run … and even if you are a very impatient business person on the road every day, who only ever charges at public charging points, you will still get subsidy from your company or, if you are self employed, you will get a healthy allowance against your tax liability from HMRC. I rest my case 😊
Thanks John. Well said!
I do respect a man who knows when to pick his battles. 😂
Years of practice!
Absolutely brilliant video. Real life with EVs thrown in!
Interesting video. It illustrates that the Ioniq 5 (and EVs) can cover large distances with minimal charging stops.
As usual lovely stuff. 👍👍👍😁
Great me & dad love your channel ❤
I have been waiting for this haha. The truth of family gonna kick in like nobody's business.. commenting in the first minute haha
Definitely here for 41:00 soup mark
Wow the rant was incredible. I admire your ability to keep calm.
Great to see the Ioniq 5 again. It was such a cliffhanger to wait for this video. :D
Greetings from the Philippines; I hope you and your family are well.
It's all on YOU! You could have repeated two words, "Si, Bellissima" for the entire trip and avoided grumpy!
I'll try that next time. Knowing my luck, she'll think I'm being sarcastic!
This video cracked me up, so funny "we could hide someone in the boot" You could see Flaviana wanting to say it and then thinking I will say in Italian just in case the officer hears!
Both of these videos Brilliant, have been waiting for part two for awhile have not been disappointed, more videos from you Andrew about your EV adventure, we need a lot more of the public to buy EV vehicles, cars and trucks, more ultra fast charging stations so the potetial buyers of EV can see you can drive anywhere like a ICE polluting vehicle. Please keep producing your videos, Great work.
Thanks so much, Robert!
the pivot to Cooking with Flaviana was amazing
Lovely video Andrew i really enjoyed watching it, i just did a 604 mile round trip in my Kona to Ireland only 3 charges and £50 .
What a car! We love the Kona.
@@MrEV Sorry i forgot to say its a Kona 64
It’s more fun to take the train to Italy , particularly down to Sicily.
I note Flavin agrees ….
Flaviana
The exhausted couple.
Deep down you know Flaviana was right on most of that. That's what's so gutting.
Plus someone said "let her do it in a FIAT". Sure, a 124 Spider or a Barchetta or a Coupe 20v turbo. I'm sure any of those would be more fun.
However, it would still not cost less than an Electric.
Have an awesome day.
Thank you David
Best wishes guys 👍
Andrew your wife is hilarious, great video.
Great video, almost feature film in length - had to get 🍿 1/2 way through. Hoping Baby finally ate something and the efficiency of the MY was more to Mrs EV’s liking 😊🤞
We took an Model 3 in summer actually, so yes, the efficiency was mind-blowing!
You have the patience of a saint.
