A little bit of advice for anyone thinking about trying this. If you want to make the hammering a ton easier, i'd suggest using something like a propane torch to heat up the quarter while you're hammering. This will make the hammering process much easier and will also prevent cracking in the metal and will remove all stresses in the metal if you let it air cool. Hope i made someones life easier. :)
Cool video! Next time drill out a hole dead center in the quarter first, then get an 8-10" piece of 1/4" all-thread like used in construction or a really long bolt at Ace Hardware. Then put a nut on both sides of the quarter and tighten it up. You will be able to roll the quarter easily by rolling the bolt between ur thumb and finger and hammer away without ur fingers getting in the way. Should speed up the process. You could even heat the quarter intermittently to soften it up like a blacksmith does to work the metal more easily. Work smarter, not harder.

After you drill the hole try putting it on a bolt and and tighten it down with a nut and then put it in a drill use a file and sand paper to make it smooth it will make it have a mirror finish if you go up to a nice fine sandpaper thats how I make my rings

All quarters before 1964 were made of 90% silver, so pretty much sterling silver. If you plan to make a ring out of one you might as well try to find or buy one before 1964, as it will make it more valuable and pretty since silver is very shiny.
If you’re planning on making these types of rings out of clad (Nickle/Copper) quarters, you should be aware of the health/lung hazards and take proper precautions to protect yourself. The fumes from annealing nickel are carcinogenic. I was making quarter rings and decided to stop after discovering this. After only a month or so of making quarter rings, I was seeing the signs of pneumonitis (inflammation of lung tissue) - yikes! coastalos That doesn't sound good. I guess I'll have to be careful if I make any more of these rings. I remember my sinuses were really congested after polishing it. I'm guessing that was probably from the nickel. I'll be sure to use a fan for good ventilation if I make these again. Keegan Cupp both wrong pre 1964 nickels are not silver. only nickels from 1942 through 1945 are silver and they are only 35 percent silver. and quarters from before 1932 are silver, they just dont have the washington head on them

Yeah! I thought of that! Is is possible to do gold plating without some special gold plating solution? Can I just use electricity to remove the gold from some gold object and plat it onto the ring? I could do silver though. I have silver nitrate so that wouldn't be to hard at all. Gold would be nicer though. Thank you!
Makerj101 It's very hard to dissolve gold into solution, if you don't use aqua regia (electrolysis will not work either (i don't khow with higher voltages)) Silver nitrate is the best, you just need to put it into the solution and after some minutes, silver plated :D
Ok that's sorta what I was thinking was the case with gold. Silver nitrate might be the way to go then! I do like the copper though because it is antimicrobial so I don't have to worry about bacteria collecting under it! Thnak you!

Oh nevermind, it was just a sanding disk. Do you know if the orangeish brown sanding disks are better on metal than the dark brown disks you used in the video to sand out the center of the ring?
+Nebur Nunes I was using the sanding disks because they are a ton cheaper than the stone ones. The stone grinding disks seem to wear out really fast and are a bit more expensive.

This includes practices such as bleaching bills and rrprinting them with higher values. What you are doing is fine and quite a few people make money making coin jewelry.

older quarter alias solid quarter of silver which is 1965-and before is not hard to find unless your talking about early 1990's-and before I get lots of silver coins from change from 65 and before oldest got was a dollar coin from the 1800s which my aunt gave me when she worked at a gas station hint its not that hard to find silver coins and quarters to be exact alone
Sledge hammer would deform it too fast. You have to work on flattening it out slowly or it will not turn out. And you could use a file but it would take a lot longer than the dremal tool. Thank you!
I'm arriving late on this post, but hey it might help. You can heat the quarter up in a candle until its glowing and let it air cool which will soften it. Do this 3 times, then try whacking it. If you still dont make much progress, hit a tad harder ;) After the ring is made, heat it up and let it cool 3 times again, then heat it up and dunk it in water. That will make the ring hard and scratch resistant.
Little late on this, but air cooling cooling only normalizes steel. For quarters, as they are copper and nickel, and this goes for silver and gold as well, heating them up to a cherry red to orange and then dunking them in water anneals them, in turn making them harder. Quenching in water only hardens steel that have a significant amount of carbon in them, IE; 5160, 1095, etc...

We used to make these by hitting the quarter or half with a spoon. It didn't take long to do it.

First I used the biggest drill bit I had. Then I just used a sanding wheel on the Dremal tool.

Why not use a file for the hole and sledgehammer for smashing?
Sledge hammer would deform it too fast. You have to work on flattening it out slowly or it will not turn out. And you could use a file but it would take a lot longer than the dremal tool. Thank you!

I'm arriving late on this post, but hey it might help. You can heat the quarter up in a candle until its glowing and let it air cool which will soften it. Do this 3 times, then try whacking it. If you still dont make much progress, hit a tad harder ;)
After the ring is made, heat it up and let it cool 3 times again, then heat it up and dunk it in water. That will make the ring hard and scratch resistant.
Little late on this, but air cooling cooling only normalizes steel. For quarters, as they are copper and nickel, and this goes for silver and gold as well, heating them up to a cherry red to orange and then dunking them in water anneals them, in turn making them harder. Quenching in water only hardens steel that have a significant amount of carbon in them, IE; 5160, 1095, etc...
