One thing I love about SA2 Eggman is how he pulls down his goggles when he goes out on his walker. It's a small signal that he's about to get his hands dirty and genuinely gives him a sense of menace that he doesn't normally have in the series. It worked especially well in his opening scene in the dark story where he crashes into a dimly lit military base and you can see the flares reflected off his face.
Honestly, I didn't think about that but now that you mention it I remember the detail and I really love it! We should see more of Eggman making use of his equipment like that!
Ever since someone pointed out that his outfit coupled with his habit of putting animals in machines evokes a Ringmaster with the red outfit who forces animals to do things like jump through hoops, I've never been unable to see it.
The persona he's built up over the years also supports that idea. Eggman is, above all else, a showman. He doesn't just do evil for the sake of being evil. He wants things to be flashy and bright, his plans are as grandiose as possible, he relishes in chewing the scenery and being as hammy as possible. He is all about presentation, to the point where he's almost more interested invoking awe and wonder into his opponents than he is at actually winning. Which is what makes Sonic such an interesting contrast. Sonic exists to bring Eggman down to Earth, to shatter his delusions of grandeur through sheer 90s defiance.
@@felixdaniels37 That's very interesting and if you want to get even further meta with it, you could even argue that the glaringly obvious weak spots a lot of his machines have are part of that showmanship and spectacle he wants. Another fun note about his design is the fact that since "Eggman" comes from the Beatles song "I am the Walrus", the yellow cape claps on his classic design meld into his big moustache to give the impression of walrus tusks. It's a detail that got discarded in his modern design, but I don't lament it too much because the way that his new coat leans far more into the "Mad Scientist" look gives him a very fun contrast with the heroes, given that those of them that wear clothes generally don't have detailed costuming - a detail that carries over into some of the comics' more villainous animal folk who wear more outfits with more ornamentation, like Surge and Starline.
I like how, while still goofy, you get this air of menace from Eggman's design. That giant grin screams "up to absolutely no good". This is further emphasized by something they like to do in the comics where they cast a shadow over his face and body, showing how scary this egg shaped man can be.
That's part of what I love about Eggman, he's a perfect villain character for an ongoing series like this, since you can easily adapt him as anything from a bumbling lunatic who acts without forethought to an ingenious mad scientist who has international government powers afraid of him, and he fits both personas easily. He can be as serious or silly as the plot calls for, which gives for some freedom of interpretation with his character
I love his SA2 design, bonus points to the mocap for making him look even more uncomfortable and weird! The thing about Eggman is that Sonic and his friends are the VERY THIN LINE that prevent the goofy scientist from being a legitimate totalitarian over the whole of humanity. While Sonic and friends always win, Eggman has gotten very close to winning several times over, has the tenacity to never give up, and has the vast resources and intelligence to constantly build an empire's worth of death machines and superweapons with little in the way of setback at any given moment. He cares very little for the collateral damage of habitat destruction and lost lives in his quest for world domination, and even the might of G.U.N. is no match for Eggman's prowress. In "The Silver Campaign" intro, there's a scene with Sonic, Shadow, and Eggman menacingly standing over Silver which shows only a vague outline of his body and his illuminated face. It is actually really spooky and super cool.
My favorite part about Eggman is that he took what was once a mean nickname and made it a title feared across the globe. But draws the line at trying to make “Baldy Mc’Nosehair Empire” work.
My kid has been watching Sonic Boom and I like how he looks in that. He retains that strange proportions of previous versions - with long, skinny legs and arms with a wide body with no visible neck - almost like an upside down egg - while giving him an almost military jacket with a folded over yellow flap and coat tails. He's also almost friendly with the heroes, going so far as to come to them for help when a problem (usually one he created) gets to far out of hand.
I like that show. I didn't really play the Sonic Boom games, other than a demo for the 3DS one, but I heard the games were a bit of a train wreck. But the show was phenomenal.
Something lost in the later Eggman designs that I’ll always miss, is that I read the costuming of the original design with the big yellow triangles coming down from the top of the shirt and under the mustache, as giving him something of a walrus look. Because he is the eggman. He is the walrus. Koo koo kachoo.
It’s the most easily noticeable at the start of this video, the first pic of Eggman. Look at how the yellow stripes come down underneath the mustache. It gives the round head, bushy mustache, and pointed triangles the shape of a walrus face. I like to think it wasn’t coincidental, but then it never really came back in the more modern Eggman designs.

His character and level themes are celebratory, he loves theme parks so much he'll turn planets into them, and dresses like a circus ringleader. He is industrial terror masked under a proud, grinning face. All-time great villain.
In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman out of his mech suit (usually only available in the Chao Garden) also boasts the fastest running speed in the game, a nice little homage to the original joke. Also makes people wonder why Eggman doesn't use this running speed more often.
bro was called eggman and took it so personal he decided to own up the the insult and defined his entire identity around EGGS and he commits to the bit even to this day
Y'all remember that one Sonic fan who hated Dr. Eggman being called "Dr. Eggman" instead of "Robotnik" (even though Dr.Eggman was his original name and Robotnik was just what the West was calling him) He would even go out of his way to "correct" kids online in such a pedantic way when they called him Dr. Eggman.
I still like the explanation Eggman gave in his voice log in Sonic Frontiers. Essentially saying "If Sonic is going to call me that anyway, I may as well own it!" His canon name is still Dr. Eugene Robotnik, but I appreciate the attempt to own what was originally an attempt to belittle him.
Personally I kinda like the characterisation that piece of localisation gives him where he just kinda stopped caring about what sonic and tails called him and started owning it instead. I think it's kinda neat.
It feels like an evolution really. He's still got the same general recognisable features (rotund, crazy long mustache, bald). His outfit still has the same general colour scheme (black bottom with two gray buttons, red top with yellow accents, white gloves and blue glasses) His limbs are longer and his outfit has a lot more small details but it still very much looks like the same guy.
If you ever decide to talk more about Eggman, I would love to see your takes on his AoSTH and SatAM/Archie designs. He was the most redesigned character of the pre-adventure era and I think it's fascinating to see him reinterpreted in so many ways
Did you know his original design took great inspiration from one of Hayao Miyazaki’s characters? One of the most iconic episodes of a classic anime, Lupin III (Part 2) was directed by Miyazaki, and the villain of the episode, one Dr. Lonebach, went on to become the inspiration for Eggman himself!
Actually, the boilerman from Spirited Away and the mechanic on the airship in Castle in the Sky both have Eggman's signature glasses and mustache! Though, they look more like modern eggman than classic.
@@Nugget111uh1 Lmao Miyazaki has a typecast in his head for old men it seems? Good for him it’s a good mustache! That said, it’s actually a bit of a debate apparently? Lonebach predates both of them-his episode aired in 1980, about 6 years before castle in the sky, and over 20 before spirited away. It actually seems there’s some debate on whether Motro or Lonebach were the bigger influence, as Castle in the Sky was as a whole apparently a pretty big inspiration for the whole sonic team; but Naoto Oshima, the character designer for both Sonic and Eggman, is a known Lupin III fan (he’s even drawn fanart on Twitter lmao!) so it’s pretty commonly said that Lonebach was the bigger inspiration. It’s likely he used both as design references, as that’s pretty common!
@@LLawliet1011 fair point to allathat, I just thought I'd point it out because it's pretty funny to watch a Studio Ghibli film and all of the sudden THE STORY BEGINS WITH WHO'S GONNA WIN KNOWING THE DANGER THAT LIES WITHIN
I want to give Jim Carrey Eggman some credit here. I did not particularly care for the Sonic 1 movie look because there wasn't anything that looked like Eggman. A skinny, techlover with a normal, if polished, mustache seemed like a Hollywood Eggman, something with all the pieces, but none of them looked quite right. But the Sonic 2 movie made me appreciate what they're going for by having his "normal" look being a necessary first step of his character arc. Watching a brilliant man slowly going insane and transforming into Eggman. Growing out his mustache and shaving his head gave him the look that I was expecting from the start, and it looks like Sonic 3 is gonna finish the metamorphosis and give him the gut and really play more into video game flightsuit over any semblance of realistic clothes. I think Eggman may be the character I'm most excited to see; aside from Shadow, of course.
It's an interesting inversion. In the games he was always "Dr Eggman" and only as the later games got more complex with more lore, story and character development, he developed too, his actual name became Robotnik and we see him transition into the iconic character of modern Sonic games. In the movies we start with the human scientist, Dr Robotnik, who in his pursuit for Sonic becomes more and more like his modern game counterpart and takes on the mantle of Dr Eggman. It's the two far ends of the spectrum closing in on a middle point where the end result is equal parts silly squat egg guy but also menacing genius and homicidal maniac scientist.
Do you know what I finally just saw? So they actually named him eggman specifically to reference a Beatles song. "I am the eggman, I am the eggman, I am the walrus" and they were trying to go for a walrus look with his design. I finally saw the walrus.

He is slowly, but surelly, turning into an egg on the movies too Every movie he gets a bigger belly
And then comes the Sat.AM cartoon version. Sure, he retains his round body shape, but the artists tried to make him look intimidating. Pitch black eyes with red pupils, a long cape with a Dracula-style collar, and a mechanical arm to be his literal and metaphorical iron grip on the world. One which he controls. This version of Eggman actually succeeded in taking over the world, and his design emphasizes the cliche 80s/90s overlord stereotype of the time.
Shocked you didn't talk about how he looked in many 90s materials such as AOSTH or SATAM. For the longest time till about Adventure, Eggman probably had the most different design of the main cast due to artists redesigning the sprite for the media (Sonic the Comic was the only excption, and even then they would later take on the AOSTH design later on)
A thing to note, in some pieces of art, classic eggman comes off as sort of creepy to me. Especially when he smiles. He sort of looks like an evil toy, if that makes sense.
I always think as when they designed a game to compete with Mario this is how their conversation went. “Do you have a pitch?” “No, but maybe we should make the protagonist the animal and the antagonist the human.” “So.. just reverse the roles?” “Yes, Exactly.” “You’re a genius!” *History was made ever since*

In Sonic Adventure 2, Eggman out of his mech suit (usually only available in the Chao Garden) also boasts the fastest running speed in the game, a nice little homage to the original joke.
Also makes people wonder why Eggman doesn't use this running speed more often.
He may be similar to cheetahs. He can run very fast but has very poor endurance.
He's an old man, it's rough on his knees
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740 No wonder Shadow was able to steal his wife away from him
@@shytendeakatamanoir9740He's also ridiculously strong physically. Like, he made an entire joke out of Starline in the IDW comics
@yasmineh.1333 You may not like it, but that's what peak performance looks like
First version with yellow stripes on chest, give a little bit of walrus vibe
Dr Paul Eggman?
He is a walking Beatles song. 🎵
He Is The Walrus
bro was called eggman and took it so personal he decided to own up the the insult and defined his entire identity around EGGS and he commits to the bit even to this day
That's actually a retcon to the US localization he was always called eggman that's his real name
You didn't think I had legs, did ya? I'm like Gru, except I'm the one before Gru. I'm... Egg-gru. Uwa, gottem
Y'all remember that one Sonic fan who hated Dr. Eggman being called "Dr. Eggman" instead of "Robotnik" (even though Dr.Eggman was his original name and Robotnik was just what the West was calling him)
He would even go out of his way to "correct" kids online in such a pedantic way when they called him Dr. Eggman.
I still like the explanation Eggman gave in his voice log in Sonic Frontiers. Essentially saying "If Sonic is going to call me that anyway, I may as well own it!"
His canon name is still Dr.
@@webbowser8834is his first name not Ivo?
I coulda *sworn* it was Eugene, but wiki says Ivo. Maybe Eugene was his middle name or his dad's name or something.
@webbowser8834 His grandfather's name was Gerald. Maybe you mixed the two together in your head?
Eggman is just a great example of peak villain design that truly stands the test of time
It’s impressive how good the post adventure eggman design is considering how wildly different it is from his classic design
It feels like an evolution really. He's still got the same general recognisable features (rotund, crazy long mustache, bald). His outfit still has the same general colour scheme (black bottom with two gray buttons, red top with yellow accents, white gloves and blue glasses)
His limbs are longer and his outfit has a lot more small details but it still very much looks like the same guy.
"I am Doctor Eggman, your new genius overlord. Get a load of this!"
“You know what they say, THE MORE THE MERRIER!”
"Because you just told me, fox boy!"
TBSKYEN HAS COME TO MAKE AN ANNOUNCEMENT
I never realized how much the yellow triangles on his jacket make him look like a walrus
@@LLawliet1011 fair point to allathat, I just thought I'd point it out because it's pretty funny to watch a Studio Ghibli film and all of the sudden THE STORY BEGINS
WITH WHO'S GONNA WIN
KNOWING THE DANGER THAT LIES WITHIN
I miss the walrus thing he had going on originally. Fitting since his name comes from the song "I am the walrus" from The Beatles
Jim Carrey was such a good Dr. Robotnik, I loved him in the Sonic movies
Do you know what I finally just saw? So they actually named him eggman specifically to reference a Beatles song. "I am the eggman, I am the eggman, I am the walrus" and they were trying to go for a walrus look with his design. I finally saw the walrus.
He is slowly, but surelly, turning into an egg on the movies too
Every movie he gets a bigger belly
Also, his original Robotnik design looks like a walrus and that's funny.
Jim Carey didn't do a perfect portrayal of in game character, but he did character justice in it's portrayal.
Also, the reason why Eggman is round is because Sega employees wanted kids to draw him with ease.
Shocked you didn't talk about how he looked in many 90s materials such as AOSTH or SATAM. For the longest time till about Adventure, Eggman probably had the most different design of the main cast due to artists redesigning the sprite for the media (Sonic the Comic was the only excption, and even then they would later take on the AOSTH design later on)
"Shocked" like with EGGS?
Bro why does this guy sound like my honors English classmates from high school that I tried to be like, with their level of vocabulary...
Finally someone is talking abt how amazing and recognizable and iconic eggman's design is
A thing to note, in some pieces of art, classic eggman comes off as sort of creepy to me. Especially when he smiles. He sort of looks like an evil toy, if that makes sense.
"You'll never live up to my four nipples." - Andrew Coleman, probably. I don't remember the dub.
“Yeah you didn’t think I had legs, did ya? I’m like Gru except I’m the one before Gru, I’m… Eggru”
Tbh, the first Eggman looks like a walrus (the yellow thing on his outfit looks like a tusk)
Eggman looks like a walwus alittle, early eggman's coat right under his mustache
The Jim Carrey likeness is a good touch imo
I'm a little disappointed the sonic boom design didn't make it into this short, where they flipped the egg upsidedown.
Nice to see the aesthetic of his creations to also come up as a point of comparison
If you look closely at the beginning of the video you can kinds see that Eggman looks like a walrus.
My favorite design for Eggman was in Sonic Boom
Sadly I cannot see eggman nowdays without thinking in his announcement
Eggman is such a fun design. For me the best Sonic design. The Eggman in the Sonic movies is also really good.
I always thought the early designs made him look kinda like a walrus
Fun fact: he's loosely based off of Theodore Roosevelt!
I always think as when they designed a game to compete with Mario this is how their conversation went.
“Do you have a pitch?”
“No, but maybe we should make the protagonist the animal and the antagonist the human.”
“So.. just reverse the roles?”
“Yes, Exactly.”
“You’re a genius!”
*History was made ever since*
You didn’t think he had legs, didn’t you?
THAT BASTARD TOOK MY NAME
One thing i love about the modern eggman design is that it looks a lot more militaristic and it reflects his grander ambitions going forward
He is an egg though.💀💀💀
So happy they gave Robotnik his game accurate look in Sonic 3
I love how movie Eggman slowly devolves more and more into his video game look 🔥
DR IVO ROBOTNIK MY GOAT
Damn, no mention of his walrus silhouette
Huh TIL the words Predilection
His vehicles are my favorites, the way the egg shaped cockpit pod can jack onto any of his machines
Funny thing is that Robotnik is an actual Polish name, so Dr. Robotnik is Polish
I think the egg pod is my favorite general design plus the seamless design integration really helps, the way this pod slides into the egg dragoon feels like adding the final Lego to your battleship
I always loved how his modern eggman logo has a smile on it. He REVELS in how evil his creations are
the first vehicle image you showed makes him look like hes just on his commute to work
amazing descriptiveness!!
The 06 design is good and the texture work is immaculate, y'all just too obsessed with hating on 06.
egg
The cute detail in live action for Eggman’s stuff to look at least rounded like an egg was also pretty cool, idk about sonic 3 tho excited to see it!
To tell the truth, there was a treadmill going backwards, and eggman was hovering with boots
His character design was always perfect.
Holy shit a real person in the shorts, I didn't think that would ever happen.
I love how Eggman looks on silloutte, very menacing
Okay so I just saw classic eggman’s face as a walrus, and I cannot unsee that
That first art of Eggman makes him look like a walrus man
I like OG Robotnik, he looks like an uncool great uncle who gives you the most money for Christmas.
I don’t know how long ago this was recorded, but with _Sonic 3_ coming to theaters later this week (as of this writing), I really appreciate that Jim Carrey’s Eggman costume just gets closer and closer to game Eggman with each movie. Proper jacket this time *_and_* some gut! Love it 🥚
Modern dr eggman is one of the best redesigns in history
The MOustache is what sells out all native french speaker.
Part of me wants to see that black white and red shiny sleek design for metal sonic but at the same time it wouldn’t make much sense since you know he’s meant to be a robotic replica of sonic no matter what I hope that the fourth movie ends up being something like sonic CD introducing Amy and metal.
The original design makes him look like a walrus with the yellow triangles mimicking fangs
His yellow stripes on his classic design are also meant to look like walrus tusks
He wasn’t called Eggman until over a decade after the games came out.
I never saw how much he is just a walrus on his old self
JIM CARREY EGG MAN MENTION ‼️‼️
I just realized the yellow sharp designs on his suit make him look like a walrus
Ill still always love his classic 16 bit era design
He thinks he's the Eggman, but he is actualy the Walrus
