The catalogue of Schubert's compositions mentions a " Deutche Messe," written in 1827 ; this, however, is no more a mass, strictly speaking, than the " German Requiem" of Brahms is a Requiem. The Deutsche Messe ("German Mass", from its real title: Gesänge zur Feier des heiligen Opfers der Messe, "Songs for the Celebration of the Holy Offering of the Mass", D. 872) is a work of sacred music.
The work was commissioned by Johann Philipp Neumann, who wrote the texts. Schubert wrote two versions, the first for a four-voice mixed choir and organ, the second for a wind ensemble comprising two clarinets, two oboes, two bassoons, two horns, two trumpets, three trombones, two timpani and a double bass. Franz's brother Ferdinand Schubert made several arrangements, including one with a three-voice boys' choir and organ, and another, a cappella, for four adult male voices. Other arrangements were made to suit the capacities and tastes of individual parishes.
The work was given the name Deutsche Messe (German Mass) because it is in German, not Latin like other works of Catholic liturgical music. The use of a language other than Latin, and the very free and romantic interpretation of the liturgical text, initially led to the work's rejection by the Archdiocese of Vienna. However, in the first half of the twentieth century, it became very popular, particularly with the spread of the German-language mass. The choirs of the Deutsche Messe are still very popular in Austria and southern Germany..
