Transparency: Dane Reynolds on high-performance surfing

- In Volume 24.5, Dane Reynolds writes about the nature of progressive surfing, offering his thoughts on face sequences, straight airs, and the unpredictable realities of a liquid medium. He was responding to a suite of photos we received from Nate Lawrence, shot while Reynolds was in Indo filming for Kai Neville’s latest film, "Cluster."
“Surfing is constantly reacting to a changing surface,” he observes. “You take mental notes on what the wave does on a certain piece of reef and how your board handles when you apply pressure. But that only removes a tiny piece of unpredictability that every wave deals you. So heading out with certain maneuvers in mind proved to be counterproductive. Being conscientious on a wave is a bad thing. When I’m doing my best surfing I’m both present and absentminded. I think that’s what makes surfing so addicting. It’s something you’ll never conquer.”

@@joeblow1942 I know. I’ve been calling his style of surfing “violent geometry” since First Chapter. I’ve known him since he was a teenager. He’s one of the nicest and mellowest people I’ve ever met. It’s a poetic paradox.

Yea man...! I normally don’t like aggressive surfing but Dane is on another level, the energy he puts into it appears fully passionate; as if every turn is his last...and he is reborn on every bottom turn to blast the lip again....unreal.
Agree completely. I was watching this, thinking that Dane is one of the few guys that assault the lip the way Andy did. He attacks it like it owes him money.

As Dane said, “Surfing is constantly reacting to a changing surface,” but this film doesn't showcase Dane's ability to react perfectly to waves because it's just a series of one-maneuver clips with almost no longer clips showing multiple linked maneuvers. I love Dane's surfing, but I'm not a fan of the cinematography here.
