Great surfer but the best part is that he seems really cool/down to earth kind of guy..

The surfing that Dane does is literally mind blowing. Sure there are a couple people who drop some crazy waves or clips from time to time but there is nobody else who consistently puts out unreal clips and vids. Dane is the best ✊🏿

Dane: Please>> Talk with Brad Gerlach about Returning to the Tour "Full Time" Next Year! The reason is because Gerlach made a choice in the 1990's to leave the Tour and go off & "Soul Surf" when he could have Earned a couple of titles... Only Gerr can say Why he chose to leave at that time (i.e. burnout, lack of motivation, other interests, etc.?), but several outcomes are Certain from such a choice: (1) Less fans would 'See' your talent & surfing, (2) You cannot Earn a title being off the Tour, (3) you Earn less money & (4) you only grow older which would diminish your opportunity to fulfill your potential & destiny*
With 'that' said, 'Soul Search' your heart, get your answer & then implement your action plan (AP): Yes, that sounds like a business 101 lecture but your results depend on your preparation, dedication & implementation. Nothing is free & it takes hard work & dedication (Slater & Curren can attest to that). So, IF you choose this path, the titles are there for you to Earn! You will Need to assemble a strong Motivation team. These are the guys you pick who challenge & motivate you daily for: physical fitness, to prepare you for contest surfing mixed w the talent you already possess, to be present at the contests with you, to measure & evaluate your goals & projections, etc.
One last thing & I will shut up. Believe me when I say, VERY few surfers on the planet have your skills & potential but TRUST me that we ALL see it in you. Wish you the Best brother* & remember 'Soul Surfing' will always be there but the Former may not at a certain point in time*

I think clay marzo had the potential to be the greatest shortboard surfer ever.
But he never worked on his power surfing and never progressed his airs. He has the slickest tube riding and his laybacks are probably never going to be surpassed. But he never worked on his overall game.
At the time Dane and clay were both young on quiksilver I remember clay was a fairly big reason Dane didn't want to do comp surfing as he'd been blown away with clays natural abilities, turns, and cat-like airs and surfing.
But look now, Dane says he cringes when he sees surfers resorting to doing blow tail airs in a vid/part, and that's all clays doing these days in most of his vids. These two have just evolved at different rates and styles.
I still prefer clays slick and flexible style but he could've been so much greater. In fact when I watch matt meola I keep thinking that's what clay could've been, only with more power, more finesse, and more daring risks.

Clay marzo suffered a career debilitating knee injury . people don't understand once-over you blow your knee that's it . It puts a cap on sky's the limit you can only perform at 50 - 75 percent sad but true .I blew my maniscus when I was 13 flipped backwards riding a wheely on my bike landed with right leg up in the air and all weight on left side (leg) at a wired angle with my foot slightly behind and all force going down my femur popped over my tibia and fibula. after weeks it went back into place but had to wear a brace surfing. Going backside when I would grab rail (I'm goofy BTW.) For a barrel it would pop out of place.

I dunno, I like his radical approach but his surfing looks contrived, not smooth. I think that's why he never does well at the comps you'd think he'd thrive at - Snapper, Trestles.

surfing tricks are so lame compared to snowboarding. the guy just did the same 3 little cutbacks in the wave and that's the best in the world? i understand the mystique involved when a dude comes out of a 100ft wave in north shore or fiji but i just dont get the hype otherwise. i guess they call them beach bums for a reason

    • @bobbycap5101
      @bobbycap5101 10 лет назад +11

I can kinda see how they look lame to a non surfer. They take more skill then you think though. But you can't really compare them because there completely different sports. :/

I understand your points and respect your opinion but from my view the biggest difference is that surfing is more of a second nature reaction sport you don't necessarily get the same wave every single time where as if you were to snowboard one run you'd know the ins and outs of it and be able to get more creative with it due to its consistency so in that respect surfing its all about making the most out of what you get and every time its different so its more like that Idk I'm super tired so I'm not thinking well but that's just my opinion on it.

Nobody answered your comment sufficiently GoldflaBer so I will. Obviously you don't surf or you'd understand the sport or what I'm going to tell you: An ocean wave is a 3-dimensional moving mass of energy transferred through ocean surface water "as a wave" that is Not stationary as a mountain or skateboard ramp is. In sports like skiing, snowboarding & skateboarding; one can set up moves & get much more kinetic energy from motion 'or gravitational energy' to perform tricks like 720's, 1080's, big airs, etc. By contrast, surfers are limited by the height of the wave which is falling & crashing in the direction they're going (towards the beach). Surfers then use that motion or velocity to perform a variety of tricks by racing down the face of the wave to the flats & then turning the board on its rail back counter to the moving wave 180 degrees or less depending on the move they desire (like 'off the lip', aerials, 360's, floaters, barrels, etc.).
The important point to remember is that a wave is 'always moving' as opposed to a stationary mountain slope or skateboard ramp! The surfer continues to react & alter their path based on the waves' present structure which is in constant change until it has exhausted all of it's energy on the beach or the surfer dismounts from the wave. No two waves are exactly alike which makes surfing much more dynamic & exciting to surfers than stationary objects found in those other sports. This is also the reason why the 'learning curve' for surfing is one of the most difficult in all sports*
What do you mean by beach bums??

Sorry, but Medina is the best. Though he want to win some contests, and he do everything that a freesurfer does, and better, in a championship.
