    The things I need Square Off to fix before considering purchasing anything from them:
    -Increased speed
    -Better app
    -Auto-allignment after each move
    -Less bugs and crashes
    -A standalone (no app) feature where the AI is integrated in the board itself, so that if that shady company ever discontinues the board and app, the board wont lose all its value.
    Also if they want to completely sell it for me, custom Harry Potter Wizards Chess edition with different piece design and board color.

    It's sad how we over three decades later are stuck with something as mechanically inferior as the Square Off.

      Yup. I have videos of Square Off on this channel. It worked well for a couple of months. But in my later videos, the machine would lose track of the pieces and go completely crazy. They say the second generation will be better but I have not tested it, so I can't say.

      @@mlee6050 the Swap board is expected to be better. I have not tested it, so I don't know. I have done a lot of videos on Square Off. The issue doesn't happen all the time. I don't know if there was a firmware upgrade I am not aware of but the board has been much better lately for some reason.

    Thank you for this video! This direct comparison was long overdue. It still amuses me how fascinated people were, when Square Off hit the scene. Weren't they using plotter (printer) technology inside of the MB back then?

    A slow and old 6502 CPU running at 1.2 MHz (Grandmaster from 1983) against a tablet with millions of times the processing power, yet the move algorithm in the old machine is far superior to the Square Off which sometimes misses pieces, bumps into them and even make them fall. The latest version of the Grandmaster chess computer on the right was the Fidelity Chesster Phantom, in 1990, which ran a pretty decent chess software (written by Kathe and Dan Spracklen) on a "faster" 5 MHz 65C02 CPU. But those old chess robots are no match for a modern chess engine. Still I enjoy playing them (I have the middle version simply called Fidelity Phantom from 1988, also with a variant of the Sargon 2.5 chess software, running on a 4 MHz 65C02 CPU). Thanks for sharing.
    BTW, the insides of both machines are very different. Square Off uses expensive and slow stepper motors, whereas the Milton Bradley (and all subsequent similar models from Fidelity who bought the patent) uses regular, inexpensive DC motors with optical digital encoding wheels. Pretty clever for lowering cost. The empty plastic casing makes for a noisier operation though, but at least you can open it for maintenance or repairs, whereas the Square Off is encased in a glued wooden casing! Doh!

      You are right. Square Off sucks big time compared to Milton Bradley. The fact that Milton Bradley performs better, deapite the fact that it's 40 years older, makes Square Off suck even more.

      The 6502/65C02 was used in tons of chess computers. I think, 2000 ELO was the barrier they couldn't break with it. Still very impressive. If you know a chess computer with that CPU and an ELO rating higher than 2000, please let me know.

    Can I ask will the Milton Bradly Grandmaster chess pieces work on the grand kingdom chessboard as my one has given up and I have been told it's not repairable as there are no spares available .l am thinking of buying the square off grand kingdom,but chess pieces don't look as good as the Milton's thankyou.

    • @Gadgetify
      @Gadgetify  Год назад +1

      I actually tried this. When the robot arm moves underneath, it interacts badly with the magnets, so it doesn't move the. I am sure pieces can be modified to work with Grandmaster but I did try this and in my case, it just didn't work.

      @Gadgetify thankyou it's at shame as the milton Bradley pieces are more detailed .The square off ones must just have metal in Maybe I can modify when i get my one.,

      @Gadgetify  Год назад

      @@doubler8761 it is possible but to be honest, I don't have extra Milton Bradley pieces, so I didn't mess with them. I was just curious to see if they work and they didn't. I too am not a fan of the pieces for Square Off. Maybe their new boards will have pieces compatible with older models?

    • @doubler8761
      @doubler8761 Год назад +1

      @Gadgetify tried it today with one of the white pawns, was not sure if they were glued or push-fit together so soaked in white vinegar for a few hours then with a flat-end screwdriver eased around the joint .it popped it apart there is a domed piece of metal in the top for weight and a magnet in the base held in by folded plastic, turned it over and put back together with a click .now it's the opposite pole it should work fine on your square off .

      Milton Bradley and Fidelity Phantom are just more reliable for some reason. Obviously, there is no way to upgrade the engine (none that I know of) and 1875 ELO or something like that is not too strong.
      My dream is for someone to make a modular chess robot. Where you can remove and add parts, upgrade, connect to LiChess, do all kinds of things with minimal effort.

      Milton Bradley is a collectible old chessboard from a couple of decades ago. Square Off has a much more powerful engine. I am a bit biased because I like the older boards, like MB and Fidelity 6100 for their durability. I would personally go with DGT Centaur if you don't need the robot feature.
