Hi Michael, Bayfeild, beautiful boat, Gozzard, got their start with this design. The tour was rough, and more and more as you investigated, I say RUN! You want to sail, not get into projects and spend a ton of $$ and not sailing! I know trust me, our boats are projects, and we aren’t boating! Not GOOD! Love this channel, you’re doing fantastic on the tours, you know what you are doing! 😊❤
Hey Capt Michael - if youre going to make a top secret boat video, dont do a wide drone shot of the coast line. It wasnt super hard to find the custom builder / yacht service facility. So you dont get the boat poached, i wont say the name. Hell of a name for a yard though. (im aware its the founder's last name. its funny to imagine if it wast a family name and they just called the yard that) Cool video and walk through. I dig the boat too. Probably needs ~$50K+ minimum to go blue water though.
I crewed on a Bayfield 32 back in the 90s. We took her from Green Bay to Detroit. An absolute great lakes TANK! I believe it would have made a great blue water Voyager. 15 years on the hard is an awful long time. If you have Deep Pockets go for it. Myself I would have to pass even if it's free.
I would pay 5k MAX , PERSONALLY would offer to take it off their hands to sAVE them the storage costs for FREE , if you got lucky a total refit DIY will be 50k for a Bluewater open ocean circumnavigator and you would have an AWESOME BOAT !! Love that interior layout !Sure if ya got $$$$$ to burn buy a much newer boat , but when you diy refit you learn every facet , every system of your vessel and you can invest the $$$ into it slowly as you have it ! There are a lot of great full encapsulated keel Bluewater tanks on the market cheap in various conditions all capable circumnavigators if properly equipped . Westsail , Cabo Rico and more ! We found a reel "sleeper" ! A Downeaster 38 on the hard for a decade for $1k , we are half way thru a refit and are very happy with our choice of a proven circumnavigator ! I know of many DE32 & DE38 like ours veery cheap ( Free to $5k ) and in not terrible condition ! You do not have to spend 50k , 150k , 250k to buy a boat that will take you anywhere ! We have less than 5k into our refit and will splash soon ! Yes by time we buy all the fancy toys we will likely have 40-50 k in our home ! and that is a risk as nobody will fully insure an older 60's-80's boat . We assume the risk . Yes you are NOT sailing when you face a 12-36 month refit , but we have enjoyed the process ourselves . A Cutter Rig 32-38 is the perfect boat for a solo with occasional crew .
Bayfield 36's are built like tanks. Famous sailors Eileen Quinn & Dave McAllister lived on their Bay36 ''Little Gidding'' for a great many years & cruised all over the eastern & western Caribbean. YOU should buy that one Michael !!!!
Dude, buy the boat. You are more excited about a shitty compass than I was on my wedding day. Here's hoping the boat lasts longer than my marriage. A boat is one of the few 'things' that can actually make your dreams a reality. If your dream is deep ocean crossings, this boat sounds well suited for you. Most would outgrow a 36'. You have the experience to know if this boat will work for the next few years or the next few decades for you. Wood can be replaced. Sails too. A quality hull and deck are the critical features. Those look solid. Best of luck.👍
I have B25 and love it. I'd say for the right price you should definitely buy it. I wouldn't pay more than 10k though. But if you buy it right, she'll be a great boat and worth your effort.
WOW what a gorgeous boat! I'm bery glad you've started this channel! I lived on a boat for two years and have hardly any experience sailing them, so I'm certainly still a greenhorn. I'm most definitely here to learn and not act like a know squat 🤣. However, I did learn that any boat is always an investment far past what you see, and once repair touches into electric systems and rigging, it gets soooo messy. This boat does seem to fit a lot of your needs, but you'll also be stuck in one place getting everything you would need bought, shipped, installed, and the troubleshooting is always a process. I've seen a lot of experienced sailors I wanted to learn from who couldn't even go for a day sail because the boat they'd undertaken had more issues just as they were getting things sorted out. Beautiful vessel, but I'd hate to see you stuck fighting it into seaworthiness if you're hoping to maintain mobility. Thank you for sharing this secret boat review, I'm hooked! 😃
They say cruising is just fixing boats in far away places.. maybe it's better to know where the wires go.. Know what tools will fix what. Winter Tale could be a great starting point. Get your hands dirty fixing her up may help when things need to be repaired in far off places.. I think she is a great boat for 25k CDN but know another 40k would be needed just to get her out on passage..
That Bayfield is a very robust and stable boat. I have a 29 Bayfield and it sails beautifully. These boats are made to stand strong choppy waters. It is worth to buy it and fix it. I estimate you will need about $20k to have it sea ready. I love the room and space. Bayfields are not the fastest sailboats due to the extended keel however they keep you safe in rough waters. If you loved it first sight, that’s your boat.
Now we are talking!! Maybe it's better to fix her up my self. Know what wires go where and have all the tools on hand. I hope someone sees what I see in Winter Tale and wants to get the work done..
Hope whoever buys it has the the time and knowledge to do the work required. Otherwise run. I know where that boat is and finding people to do the work is a nitemare. Been there done that. One of the most stressful experience of my life. " the term time and materials" is a soul crusher.
TONS of neglect and deterioration - MONTHS of daily work to bring her back. So many things not mentioned--CANVAS $$$$$, engine/tranny/ driveline $$$$$, electronics $$$$, tankage, deck leaks, hatches, dodger/ enclosure etc etc. Don't pay more than $10K
Great boat, lots of time work and cash. I wouldn't pay more than 15 k. Needs so much and you know it's not cheap. Might need a motor, the water maker is probably toast. I would guess you will probably put 30 k in it to get it blue water ready. It would be a nice rig when done. Good luck
Hi, I'm kind of in the same delema as I'm in the process out in MI. (I'm also Canadian). I spent sometime alone to see if I get the vibe of the vessel. Are you willing to spend time out to resetle this boat back to life? I feel she's worse it but...have not reviewed the survey. All the best. Keep up the good wrk
It has potential; you know what you want. Other than what you buy the boat for - I would expect to dish out 50 to 60K (if you do the work yourself to refit and outfit the vessel for bluewater.
All yachts/motor boats are a liability, they consume massive maintenance costs. Fir a boat to have value, its got to be in very good condition. If you have to work on it for a year to make it good what is the value of that labour? 100k? And other costs and parts on top. It's very hard to value a yacht for that reason, many have zero value and sit in yards as people don't want to face it.
I think you need to invest 10-15k to bring it in ocean sailing condition. So if you can get it for 10k max 12k i think it would be a great deal. But this will be a long term project. If you have it all done and refited it should be easy worse 80k or more, the layout of the boat is amazing for a small boat like this.
I would never touch a boat that hasn't been sailed for that many years. Too many variables. Many Bayfields for sale in Ontario that are ready to sail away.
I know where you are , My boat is there down by the lift . If you are in town I will give you a tour if you like . She’s the one with the red boot top strip and the bow thruster.
Price: $2k add outboard and emergency pumps + 10 hours of work to go day sailing to figure out what else it needs.... Maybe another $20k and 300 man hours not counting winter storage to make a ricketee coastal cruiser... Not counting storage..... Storage/docking is a far larger expence over 5 years than refit & maintenance (i love bowsprits just not enough to pay premioums for them)
If you could get it for around 10k, i would say buy it, one sold by me a couple months ago rigged for 10k. You are looking at a re- rig, standing and running, misalainius winches and hardware. All new electronics, canvas, dinghy, outboard, etc. You are talking good money to get her sailing again. Lots of things to consider, 10k might actually be high, considering the work needed to sail again.
I was once given a free Colombia sailboat on the hard in Ft Lauderdale.... I turned it down because dockage cost more than rent and i didn't even know if the boat floated
Re-rigged, fridge/freezer compressor, new diesel engine. Solar, batteries, plumbing, in fact everything will need replacing... You are essentially buying the hull wood fittings on the interior, and sails that might give you 5 years... $150K to spend and a couple of years work... Good base boat but a project boat non the less... Id pay 10K ... No more...

Michael, you speak from real world experience. Nice work again. Very informative and entertaining!

There is not a more expensive boat than a cheap boat
Wise words my friend

Crewed on one from Canada to San Francisco recently, sailed through a couple of gales. Awesome boat.

Ok so we got 10k$ This is why I love the comments section. Does anyone else think 10k?

I’d offer 15k ~ see what they say! Beautiful Yacht!
Yes, buy it!!! She's a true blue water proper sailing yacht
Now we are talking!! Maybe it's better to fix her up my self. Know what wires go where and have all the tools on hand. I hope someone sees what I see in Winter Tale and wants to get the work done..
Since it's been sitting for 15 years, I'd say offer $7500. To fix it up, north of $30k.
Hope whoever buys it has the the time and knowledge to do the work required. Otherwise run. I know where that boat is and finding people to do the work is a nitemare. Been there done that. One of the most stressful experience of my life. " the term time and materials" is a soul crusher.

You're right. I will go into better detail in future walk thru's. Ill also be doing a more detailed walk thru on Patreon.
Bayfeild but without the clipper bow - this would be my dreamboat...
It has potential; you know what you want. Other than what you buy the boat for - I would expect to dish out 50 to 60K (if you do the work yourself to refit and outfit the vessel for bluewater.
125 Port Darllington Rd..... giggly giggly.

It’s a nice hull but this boat needs between 60 and 80K USD to get back to cruising condition.
@Jeni23-k6u Ahh. You see why the video is public! When I find the vessel I'm looking for chances are you will not see it here..
12k tops. Whatever you think you need to spend double it. Money goes fast doing a refit.
Price: $2k add outboard and emergency pumps + 10 hours of work to go day sailing to figure out what else it needs.... Lots of potential only if the price was under 20 grand needs about 25-30 grand for upgrades
If you could get it for around 10k, i would say buy it, one sold by me a couple months ago rigged for 10k. You are looking at a re- rig, standing and running, misalainius winches and hardware. She belongs to be back under sail by you! Restore a classic and rule the sea
This channel reminds me of yacht hunters. Looking forward to more videos.
Enclose/fiberglass window above nav station. Big wave or forget to close and all your new electronics are done.
I was once given a free Colombia sailboat on the hard in Ft Lauderdale.... I turned it down because dockage cost more than rent and i didn't even know if the boat floated
Buy it if you’re handy ….i would pay more 9 to 11 grand. I’d say buy her
With electric, running and standing, mechanical I think you'd go through 30 fairly easily.
I'm pretty sure I saw that vessel.
Re-rigged, fridge/freezer compressor, new diesel engine. Solar, batteries, plumbing, in fact everything will need replacing... Money PIT! But if you can do the work yourself and have a year or two to do it?
I'd say a year or 2 is about right by myself. Maybe 6 months with 4 people and 40 k$? Any thoughts?
buy it now !!
get a survey first
Keel looks too thin and hull isn't flared out.... might be a beater if not following or on true beam.
Agree lots of flat Hull section there
Awesome boat!!
Worth no more than $10,000. In the condition that it's in presently. Years of work and a ton of $$$
You want comments, here they come...one by one...prop needs a cotter pin.
$25,000 tops
500 bucks for a day sailor until it sinks
