- The Shonen genre is no stranger to their intricate power systems. Whether it's jutsu's, devil fruits, breathing styles or even cursed techniques and their complicated rules.
These power systems are integral to the story and make the shows what they are, but no matter the anime there will ALWAYS that one character that will challenge the status quo and just tell you: "F*ck your powersystem, I'm Built Different."

Im pretty sure he uses his titan power, it's the only reason he can pull off attacks like that.
Explanation: Ackermens are a bloodline that were tested on by the King at the time so that they can protect the royal family. They were injected with titan serum but they couldn't transform like others would, but they do get the physical abilities titans would have. So Erens punch? Levi could do it, only on a smaller volume because of his size but his physica abilities are busteded because of it.
This applies to Mikasa and other Ackermens
Nah, Levi is an ackerman, similar to Mikasa.
They basically are a titan in human form.

For Toji Fushiguro, despite not being able to use cursed energy, the very heavenly restriction that causes that also gives him superhuman strength and senses.
Also Kishibe from Chainsaw man. He had devil contracts in his prime but now he relies purely on his physical strength and intelligence. In a world where everyone is either not human or has superpowers from contracts, Kishibe relies on the one thing that humanity has to even all odds : wit

the two things you forgot to mention about garp is that
1: he not only rejects the powersystem of fruits, but also naval warfare because he literally just throws cannonballs instead of using a cannon
2: he not only rejects the power system, but also the system of power and he just plain speaks his mind about celestial dragons and fellow navy that he disagrees with because they genuinely cannot mess with him both due to his strength and his status

These not actually just a Trope, but a bunch of Sub-Tropes combined. For anyone that cares, here's the list:
*1 - "Badass Normal":* Character with absolute no power in a team of superpowered people. Yet, as the name suggests, they can still hold on their own nonethless. Example, Batman in the Justice League.
*2 - "Charles Atlas Superpower":* Trope to when a character with "pure hardwork" and "training", can somehow achieve Superhuman strength, speed, and physique. Aka, Rock Lee and Saitama.
*3 - "Un-Sorcerer":* This trope is when a character, in a world of Common Superpowers, is born without being able to use No Powers at all. Such as Toji, Izuku Midoriya, Rock Lee, Mash, etc.
*4 - "Almighty Janitor":* Trope for character who's (from the perspective of others characters) look, seems, or is just an worthless/average guy - but yet, despite allat, they're simultaneously an unit or a powerful character in a literal or figurative way. Toji is literally that, bcuz of the Zenin Clan making him be classified as an "average non-curse user", as if hes just a civilian.
*5 - "Magically Inept Fighter":* A world where Magic or Superpower exists, but a character either can't use or SUCKS A LOT at them. So, they try and make up with it by training in melee combat instead. Applies to Asta, Mash, Rock Lee, Saitama, etc.
magically inept applies to all of them, thats the trope, worded slightly differently.

It isn't - tho, all 3 could be considered sub tropes of one anothern, they are still their own thing bcuz of the specifics related to them.
For instance:
- *Un-Sorcerer* Implies a scenario where powers are very common - Yet a character is born with none.
- *Badass Normal* Implies a scenario where powers aren't common, but still exist - And, among the powerful people, a "regular" character still holds their own despite having no powers at all.
- *Magically Inept Fighter* Implies that the character in question CAN use powers/magic, but they either suck at it, or have no talent at all - So, they go for a different route to compensate or add up to their weak magic, in combat.
The difference is in the application and context.
Do not fucking put deku in same place as rock Lee.

If you wanna say that I just meant born with no power or something that's litreally all of One Piece characters who has devil fruit. Like litreally most of them didn't have much of the haki and for sure they weren't born woth devil fruit powers.
Denken's scene is pure sheer badassery displayed with no exaggeration. Because this guy has a lot of experience after his defeat against Frieren is Out of Mana, he doesn't give up, he had a backup plan after seeing the corpse earlier, finds the other party members, and comes up with the only logical conclusion is a fistfight.

Apparently, if I recall correctly, the sword now has magical properties from him slaughtering Demons with it. Still, it was just a hunk of steel shaped like a big blade before and when he started using it, though it was also intended to slay Dragons, hence the name "Dragonslayer".

Personally, one of my favorite tropes in shounen is the OLD BADASS : Japan loves to remind us the old saying "beware the ones who grew old in a profession where people die young" !!
Shout out to Mirio Togata (Lemillion) from MHA for sacrificing his quirk to protect Eri, and then continuing to stomp on Overhaul when he should've been getting his shit wrecked by Overhaul's broken quirk.

It's like what Mirio said, his quirk theoretically is hot garbage but he trained his ass off to make it useful and that means his own body. Sure you can use the acceleration from becoming tangible again to land powerful punches but his punches only work because he trained himself to be that physically strong so even if quirkless for that limited time he still has all that training backed up that can be used normally without his quirk.
Dude was and still is an absolute beast.
My favorite is Touma from A Certain Magical Index.
He's the lowest ranked "esper" in his school because he doesn't have flashy psychic powers like everyone else....but he does have an ability called the "Imagine Breaker" which lets him nullify any magic he touches with his hand.
So a typical fight with Touma involves him shutting off his opponents immense psychic powers and then beating them in a fist fight because they rely too much on their psychic powers so their bodies are weak.
Yep Touma deserves a place even in his base form. Now, add to that the dragons, the Invisible Thing, or KnT, and he wipes the floor with anyone that isn't god-level.

My favorite Kenpachi moment will always be when he asks if Nnoitra knows a sword is stronger when swung with both hands. He then demonstrates that he's been just screwing around for _the entire series_ thus far and delivers a single slash with proper form to end the fight.

What about characters like Sanji, which uses his legs exclusively to fight and enhances them with haki? Or characters like shanks and Zorro, which use haki and a sword. Or Roger he didn’t have a devil fruit but he began the king of the pirates and was feared for his strength. All of these characters, including Garp fall perfectly within the power system. Of the show. The primary power system in one piece is haki not devil fruits.
Guy need just one more second in the ring and the war would have ended.

One Piece is one of the best examples of this type because there are so many unique fighting styles separate from Devil Fruits and Haki. Fishman Karate, Santoryu, Black Leg Style, Franky Boxing, Color Trap, the list goes on.
Honestly one piece has multiple fighting systems that are all equally viable

Obi from Fire Force. Dude decided to go from regular Fire Fighter to a Captain in the Fire Force just because of his moral compass.
He’s even built like a paladin and just as strong as one too.

An honorable mention in the same catagory as Denken would be Part 3 Jotaro. He's got one of the most powerful Stands in the series, but is he completely reliant on it? *No.* In the fight against Yellow Temperance, Jotaro uses Star Platinum to hold Rubber Soul in place *so he can beat his ass himself.* Want it to fit this video better? When Alessi turns him into a child, thus locking away Star Platinum, Jotaro just beats his ass till Alessi releases his ability *before* he starts forgetting about his life after his current age.

Honestly I think Akemi Homura from puella magi madoka magica deserves at least an honourable mention. While she does have her time stop magic in terms of offensive capabilities her powers are useless, so what does she do against the eldritch abominations that infest her world? She grabs machine guns half her size, makes pipe bombs a starts packing so much heat she could level half a city

i disagree with Garp being on here, dont get me wrong LOVE Garp, but devil fruits are simply one aspect of one pieces power systems, their are many characters that dont have devils fruits and SLAP Garp is simply one of them.

My honorable mention is Shiro Emiya. The guy has a pitiful core, damaged mana circuits and an origin rewritten to thr concept of a sword by accident by his adoptive father. He can't perform normal magecraft that well. But what he can do is honed to such perfection that he can match blades with Heroic Spirits (mana ghosts of Heroes of history who get an additional buff by the Holy Grail). He even can perform feats of magecraft even gifted mages struggle with. He is the definition of 'F*** your power system. I'm doing it my way'

I think Garp does belong here even though he uses Haki, mostly because it is the only thing he uses! Most other characters use a combination of the three power systems in One Piece: Haki, Overpowered Weapons, and Devil Fruits; but Garp said “Nah, I’m better” and decided no devil fruit, no weapons, just pure Haki and HANDS!!!
Shoutout to Erza from Fairy Tail. Her power is just "let me swap my weapon into a different weapon" and yet she's one of the strongest characters in the show

Karou Hanayama from Baki.
In the word of deadly matrial arts and techniques this guy has never EVER done any training. Not matrial arts nor strenght. All he does is punching and grabbing with such strenght, his opponents flesh blows up. And this guy can tank insane amount of damage. Like when he took on Yakuza hideout just to get tons of slashes by their swords to make his tattoo look cool. Or his entire fight against Speck. He got shot in both knees, took an ammo blast inside his mouth, a finger in his ear reaching the brain, flashbang in the face and curb stomp on his neck. Then he casually ripped flesh out of Specks's arm while being choked.

The MC of Chivalry of a Failed Knight. Ikki, if I remember correctly. He does technically have magic, but all it allows him to do is basically shut down other bodily functions of his to increase his physical parameters.
For example, turning off the color receptors in his eyes and therefore making it so that he can only see in black and white in order to increase the speed at which he's actually able to perceive things via his sight, or temporarily shutting off his lungs or heart to give him a MASSIVE boost to his already incredible physical abilities that he trained basically his whole life after almost everyone in his family decided he was a hopeless failure from birth.
Bro is considered the worst fighter in his school, but only because no one places any value on his physical abilities, being too focused on the magical power a person has.
It's not quite like Mashle levels of arrogance where they don't believe in physical ability at all, but it's more just the general consensus that without any powerful magic you can't stand on top. So more akin to Naruto and JJK than Mashle.
Another honourable mention, as there’s no power system in his verse, would be *Kamogawa* from Hajime No Ippo. In his prime, dude literally only needed two punches to finish the match, the rest were blocked. He’s slow, but he’s tanky AND strong enough to leave genuine hand imprints into Anderson’s arms and body (legit broke all of his ribs too, and probably caused internal bleeding).

Reigen from Mob Psycho feels like a very special example of this to me because he doesn't miraculously have the physical strength to put him on par with all the psychics, but when the going gets tough, who's the one always running in to help Mob when there's world-ending stakes?

Bro got shafted so hard that he's a literal giant stuck at the size of a 4 year old, cursed to be entirely devoid of strength to the point he can't wield a normal weapon, oh and he's deaf to boot. However, never giving up, he found a way he can fight. He pinpoints the precise weak point of something causing it to shatter with the use of a tiny needle like sword. In a world of brute strength he really said screw your hands if you throw a punch at him he can shatter your bones.

Yep, Kenpachi, Levi and probably Asta deserve some love for this kinda business too.
Mashle is probably the best example here since the other “hands only” fighters do use the magic system to their advantage but from what I know do far at least, Mashle is literally just overpowering magic just because kinda like Saitama
Honorable mention to Alfred Pennyworth from DC Comics. I can't exactly remember which one... But it was the one where some of the henchmen from either Joker, Twoface, or Penguin try to rob Bruce Wayne while he was out doing his Night Shift Career; and they encounter Little Oldman Alfred. Honorable mention have to go for inosuke too. Motherfucker invented his own breathing, can dislocate his body, has full spatial awareness, took the sword from Douma ever so casually then won him with the help of kanao and shinobu.

I wouldn’t count asta since he directly engages the power system in his verse unlike toji or guy.
But he definitely messed up the power system. Because there are spells that can sense magic or that a magic barrier. And since he doesn’t have magic, he can carry the demon slayer and demon dweller swords. Not to mention that those swords are anti-magic swords.

Thoma from a certain scientific railgun/magical index. His only power is the ability to completely neutralize esper abilities with his right hand. But he is a level 0 esper (basically has little to no actual powers) he comes across the strongest esper and beats his ass by exploiting his power. it doesn't work on hand to hand.
