The manhwa The Knight King Who Returned with A God has this. At one point they cross over into a super advanced civilization where instead of fighting the usual they come across a super advanced enemy mech called JAGD Spinner whose last command was to defend the now fallen civilization. Why yes seeing them fight is cool, but what I'm really into is the interaction. Like how'd they introduce themselves into each other? How do they view each other?, Just seeing two villains that the heroes had a hard time defeating in the same room talking gets me excited more than the fights.
I remember the first time watching The Exorcist and the line "Evil versus evil." Was really powerful of an idea. There's a level of depravity that you will be shocked by in watching two or more people that just don't care about anything, is pretty wild, so yeah definitely a popular trope

Ive been praising this trope for ages since I watched Sasuke's arc and that Zoldycks vs Chrollo fight in the classic HxH. It can give so much personality and ambition to the villains but I think it still is underused in media.
Not just in anime, in fiction. This trope is really great because makes the villain special. It can be used to show a villain's growth while allowing you to root for them. Like Shigaraki vs Redestro where we see the man child from S1 grow into a nuclear threat. Or reestablish how goated the long time villain is. Like Megatron vs Insecticon or Megatron vs D-void. Because Megatron is a long time villain and rarely has W's again Prime, him going up against other villains in the story to show that he is still the biggest threat in the story while you get to root for the Gladiator of kaon is truly badass Or in rare cases, known the villain down a few pegs. Like Homelander vs Soldier boy. After watching Homelander dominate encounters for 2 seasons straight, seeing him on the back foot scared for his life was great.
Villain fights never need to hold back, it's awesome. One of my favorite battle shonen tropes is the near-death revelation. JJK excels at this too. I loved Megumi's one especially.
Jogo vs Sukuna has gotta be one of my favorite fights in all of recent anime, because it has two of my favorite anime tropes; the "villains boxing villains" and the "desperate battle against someone way stronger than you".

Mappa cooked in that mahoraga fight... i wish gege went half as hard as the animators at mappa cus reading JJK i was heartbroken by just how much more solid the anime was! Those mappa animators got alot of credit with JJK but tbh they deserve even more

What I personally love about villain vs villain fights is the fact that, unless you definitively know someone is the main antagonist, fights can mostly seem like they can do either way If you have the main antagonist or the main protagonist fighting someone, you can generally assume that they’ll win due to just basic plot structure But when a side character fights another side character, that’s when it gets spicy
Eh whoever the story invest more into and you empathize with will be the protagonists even if they’re not good guys. You can spend equal time across multiple sides of evil/grey factions like game of thrones but it has to be really well done and it still ends up nihilistic. And that doesn’t capture the spirit of true villains facing off.
Honestly gege didn’t cook nearly as hard as MAPPA did sukuna vs mahoraga is like 5 pages in the manga and jogo vs sukuna was enhanced as well with extra scenes
This reminds me of Yu-Gi-Oh and how my all-time favorite duels were ones between villains (or antagonists) because there’s no plot armor, and they dished out as well as they could give because most of them didn’t have something like morality holding them back. Marik vs Bakura in the original series, Sora vs Shun in Arc-V, and Lightning vs Spectre in Vrains are all so memorable because of that.
I like it because as villains, we are interested on them losing or getting in a disadvantage, but since both fighters are villains we are conflicted, like who between these two assholes deserves to lose more? That's the fun of it. And also, the heroes can only benefit from the result of the foght, so we get to enjoy action while our heroes are safe
My fav trope are the insane characters that expands the power system that was suppose to be simple my example of this is Samuel D. Owen aka Sato in Ajin
My favorite trope is that character that is technically on the same level as everyone else (same powers / same kinds of powers) but they're so good that it's impossible to imagine them losing until they do. Ie, Jiren from Dragon Ball, Yujiro Hanma from Baki, The Ghoul from Fallout, Fuhrer Bradley from Fullmetal Alchemist, Tomura Shigaraki from My Hero Academia, Darth Vader from Star Wars, Madara from Naruto etc.
Not really an anime, but Star Wars the Clone Wars series has several instances of this trope. Chief among them was when Darth Sidious pulled up on Mandalore and had a 2v1 fade against Maul and Savage. The brothers' little criminal regime wasn't affiliated with the Separatist or Republic factions, they weren't in the know about Palpatine's proxy war takeover scheme either. Old man was chuckling throughout the fight, didn't even perceive them as a real threat. He literally showed up and mopped the floor with them both for no reason other than because he could(and the Sith's rule of two).
All time favorite trope has to be the strong old guys. The guys who have ton of experience in fights like The yamamotos, garps, naobitos, zeno and neteros anime.

The choreography during Sukuna's fight was so good, I rewatched it so many times. Demon Slayer is beautiful and all, I mean you can never go wrong with ufotable, but that Sukuna scene is just 😩🍆💦
I’d like to note, Sukuna literally told jogo, “if you can hit me, I’ll go along with your plans and you can be my boss” basically. And if you know how strong Jogo is that doesn’t even begin to make sense.
For the plot's sake, either villain could easily win and it wouldn't destroy the plot because the hero must have a villain. You basically get rid of plot armor and give the winner and loser a chance to grow stronger which then means the hero gets weaker as everyone else grows. At the same time it gives character development for both villains.

You are gonna DIE when the monster association ARC of OPM gets to full swing. (And so will the animators the stuff Murata made was not intended to be animated by mortal hands) Edit2: I think it adds to the fight that having 2 villains you actually dont know whos gonna win as the story can go on without either or both and that raises the stakes, they can also be straight up DEVIOUS in their attacks/moves and its ok cause they are the bad guys they dont need to be nice about it. My favorite trope funnily enough is probably "Old Guy thats more powerful than the protagonist so the villain has to cheat against him" I like it when the protagonist is super strong... But this one guy who actually has been in the business is stronger and more experience, I feel like it grounds the story somehow, it reinforces the whole idea that the protagonist put in the work to get strong so this guys who has done it for longer has it even more: Yamamoto from Bleach held that spot until he died and Beerus from Dragon Ball super does it for me. Edit: I also really like Gojo for this reason, hes on the younger side but technically hes the mentor not the protagonist, so this whole "Why doesnt the teacher do it?" And then Gojo shows up and does it and the villains whole deal is dealing with him while the protagonist rises beyond the villains expectation
I'd say my favorite trope is playing into a trope, and then subverting it. Example, when Renji and Ichigo attack Aizen in the Soul Society arc, they plan their attack, Ichigo's theme swells and he charges in. You think "oh yeah here we fuckin go" only for Aizen to stop his attack with ease, the music cuts (and never plays again), and Ichigo almost dies instantly. The use of tropes to make our minds go to the right when the writers are about to go left always mezmerizes me.

But this one guy who actually has been in the business is stronger and more experience, I feel like it grounds the story somehow, it reinforces the whole idea that the protagonist put in the work to get strong so this guys who has done it for longer has it even more:
Yamamoto from Bleach held that spot until he died and Beerus from Dragon Ball super does it for me.
Danzo vs Sasuke wasn't interesting to me because it's just Sasuke flexing his plot armor.
gilgamesh vs beserker. you had to be there
Aizen vs Yhwach. Let Kubo and Pierrot cook.
You this dude voileted Kevin Hart with that ugly jab.
You left out Vegeta vs Jeice.
I mean toji technically a villian too but even toji fight was insane, he should have fought sukuna bro that would have make the season even better
Sukuna would curbstomp toji and he wouldn't entertain him either since he's stronger than jogo.
