  • The DaVinci Resolve video editor is a competitor to Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro and Avid Media Composer that you can download for free for Windows or Mac. This video shows you how, and provides a demo of the program.
    Please note that I have no association with BlackMagic Design.
    The download link for DaVinci Resolve is: www.blackmagic...
    You may need to shrink your browser window (crtl minus) to see the download button at the base of the form -- it does not appear on all screens without doing this, and you cannot scroll down to it).
    If you do download via the above link, and instead navigate to the download page on the BMD website, make sure that you download DaVinci Resolve on the LEFT (the free version), NOT DaVinci Resolve Studio (the paid version) on the RIGHT.
    For more information on the program, see my DaVinci Resolve FAQ video here: • DaVinci Resolve Free V...

    Here are a couple of reasons why DaVinci Resolve is not a proper replacement for Adobe Premiere or similarly capable video editors:
    - outrageous system requirements. It reserves 4.5GB of memory just for loading the GUI with nothing going on which pretty much smells like horrible code optimization
    - Win10 incompatibility by throwing QT-decoder error which leads to the next problem:
    - no native file format support. it relies instead entirely on Quicktime which is not just massively limited in its file format support, but also deprecated. all the issues in this comment section of people not being able to open popular video formats are due to this issue
    - no full support for popular video formats such as AVI, MKV, OGM or frameservers. the entire program is built to support high-quality content only, that means content from camcorders. you won't be able to load any files from video capturing software like fraps or obs into it thanks to that which is outright ridiculous. also, the lack of full support also means that SOME files MIGHT work while others will fail
    - no indicator of why some files aren't supported as they aren't even displayed within the program
    All in all, this is only useful for those trying to edit raw camcorder footage. If you're trying to use your old AVI, VOB, MKV, OGM, MP4s with all sorts of different codecs then you're better off with a proper video editor that isn't so barebones as Davinci.
    I just wasted an hour finding all that out and trying to get this to work. I would have appreciated it if the video would have gone more in-depth regarding obvious issues like file format support instead of limiting itself to only three of them.

      I did, I think, make it clear that Resolve is targetted at the pro market, and hence handles all pro formats (which it does), but not all consumer ones. On memory, yes, it eats it up -- but so too do other pro editors . . .

    • @Xiaopang3333
      @Xiaopang3333 8 лет назад

      "I did, I think, make it clear that Resolve is targeted at the pro market"
      Phrasing. You called it a "high end video editor" which can relate to all kinds of things like its features. Seeing how you repeated their marketing hogwash regarding their use in "Hollywood" (which goes for every popular non-linear editor btw), the entire context rather implies that you mean its features by that.
      The "professional video editing" line you read on their webpage is merely marketing as well, as there's no clear definition what that entails. Producing TV programs certainly is one of them and they need all kinds of formats each day, especially if internet footage is being used. None of which is supported. Besides, Premiere is a "pro editor" as well, so is Hitfilm 4 and they all support widely used formats.
      "On memory, yes, it eats it up -- but so too do other pro editors . . ."
      Can you even name one that eats 4.5GB just by loading its own GUI without even having a project loaded? Premiere and Shotcut only use 250MB. Hitfilm 4 also only requires a few hundred megs. I don't have Final Cut ready to check its startup usage, but seeing that it's minimum requirements only list 4GB it will most likely not need more than Premiere. Same goes for Avid.
      That editors need more memory during editing and especially when encoding the project is a given, but Resolve wastes gigabytes of valuable memory for nothing, only to require even more memory down the road for tasks that could be done much more efficiently. On my 8GB machine I can edit 1080p content in Premiere just fine and even edit and encode up to 8K content with Avisynth and x264. In Resolve I couldn't even finish a 1080p edit, let alone export it due to its absolutely inefficient design.
      You also didn't touch on how future-proof this editor will be. Seeing that it entirely relies on the now obsolete Quicktime framework and considering that its developers didn't even care to address the issue of Apple's ceased Windows support could mean that Windows users could be left in the dust in the future. For Windows users the only advice has to be to stay away from this piece of junk. It does nothing other software can't do, if not even better.

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  8 лет назад +3

      Xiaopang3333 We clearly have different views on this. :) I've supplied film and video materials for broadcasters since the mid-1980s, and in that context refer to a "professional video editor" as one used to make broadcast TV shows and movies -- which does certainly not include most VLEs. As a colour corrector, Resolve is very widely used professionally. As an editor, far less so -- but that is the market they are now also going after (and why a free version is currently available). Personally I still edit in Premiere a lot, but am starting to use Resolve as I am not happy to join the Creative Cloud model. But as with everything in my videos, this is just my opinion! :)

    • @Xiaopang3333
      @Xiaopang3333 8 лет назад

      ExplainingComputers Well, I respect your opinion, though I think it makes for a lousy video editor outside a professional environment due to its many shortcomings ;)

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  8 лет назад +3

      Xiaopang3333 I actually think we agree significantly on this one. Resolve is indeed focused on professional environments and formats -- and is hence a good editor for those wishing to learn about the same. The broader problem here is that the pro video editing market has become a mess. Final Cut is now losing users fast now that Apple seem to have all but abandoned the pro camp, Avid still (in theory) requires approved hardware, and Premiere Pro has gone rental only. And it is in this context that Resolve is rising up -- if not there yet . . .

I have now completed my course and thus i would need to pay to continue using Premiere. Premiere is a fantastic editing software but expensive. DaVinci Resolve in my opinion is just as capable as Premiere but has one thing going for it that Premiere does not. User friendliness! Easy to use and hassle free. I recommend DaVinci Resolve to anyone serious about video editing. You will discover small features that you wont be able to live without. Thank you again for shearing :)

    You don't have to put videos on separate tracks and overlap them to do transitions. You can put them end to end on the same track, and drag/drop a transition over the point where the videos meet, and the transition will still work. After you drop a video transition, drop an audio transition on the related audio tracks, and the two transitions will be linked.

    Hello Chris. I have been using Windows 8.1 to 10 Movie Maker, which as you probably know is no longer available for new Windows 10 installs. As it seems I'm going to lose it because I have to format and reinstall Windows on my computer, do you have any suggestion of a free movie editor that isn't as demanding as DaVinci Resolve. My PC has Pentium 2 GB RAM 3 GHz 64 bits and no idea how much GPU (most probably very little). Movie Maker usually works well with very few glitches. For the time being I don't need much more than what Movie maker gives me: Cutting clips, adding clips, moving them about, adding music, title, credits and description, saving with and without audio, and not much more. I have 2 other similar PCs with Windos XP and Windows 7, which work more efficiently than the Windows 10 one (terribly RAM consuming BS if you ask me). If there was something similar I could use with XP I might be better off. Or is my only option to rob a bank and buy a top RAM; GPU monster? Thanks for any suggestion.

      Go for Kdenlive -- I cover it in about 8 and a half minutes into this video: ruclips.net/video/GmHAiUcAPwk/видео.html Ideally it needs 4GB RAM, but you may well get away with 2GB for basic editing as you describe, depending on the resolution. The trick will be to edit using proxy clips. I show how to do this from c. 3:58 in this video -- ruclips.net/video/NRsXiRcaItk/видео.html -- this is an SBC video, but the Kdenlive setup is identical in Windows. Good luck!

    hello! can't even download this. Do we just not have the right kit? says " could not find any open CL capable GPUs . is asking "would you like to review and update your DaVinci resolve hardwear configurations?"

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  5 лет назад

      Sounds like you have downloaded but cannot install? The message is I'm afraid indeed saying that you do not have an appropriate graphics card in your PC. You may be able to fix the problem by updating your graphics card drivers. Resolve needs a graphics card with at least 1GB RAM, manufactured in about the past 5-6 years. For alternative free video editors, see: ruclips.net/video/YiesMpzFYf8/видео.html

      @@ExplainingComputers thanks Christopher. you make this all so easy to understand... what's the situation with microsoft Moviemaker 10 ? I'm a beginner and not techy. who owns it? google says its not being managed my microsoft, yet it's still in the microsoft store. Also entry level paid for. do you have another video? Im thinking adobe premier .... adobe premier pro

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  5 лет назад +2

      Premiere sadly is subscription only now. My advice on an editor these days would be Resolve (if you can run it). If not, HitFilm Express (which you upgrade to paid later if you wish), and then maybe Premiere Elements if you want to pay. But Kdenlive -- free -- is good for lower-spec machines.

    That's cool Chris. Okay, what about android tablet use, can we use it in android - what are the best freebies for that platform? After watching you videos on raspberry pi's I am very interesting in thier use for my applications which are music and videos. Could I run a program like this snd say, Reason 7 or 8 on a pi using a seperate hd for space? I have 2 x 2 tb WD passports.

      You may -- just about -- run the Kdenlive video editor on a Pi. But it really lacks the memory and CPU power for video editing.

    • @ExplainingComputers

      The message means that WinZip is no longer working -- so it is now a Resolve issue. Windows 10 should be able to extract the files. Or use a free utility like 7 Zip: www.7-zip.org/download.html

    Thank you for the informative video. I will try this video editor. I am glad it does not have water mark and no time restriction for the video. I am using for the past month Power Director but the free version and expected that it has water mark. My videos have water mark. I am excited to explore this video editor. By the way, I read in one of the comments that somebody addressed you as Ringo, one of the Beatles members. Yes, you have a resemblance. 🙂

    Hi I would like to ask whether this has a watermark after it’s been exported or saved since normal free editing softwares have a watermark

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  5 лет назад

      There is no watermark -- and see my video on seven free video editors that have no watermark either. Just make sure you download DaVinci Resolve on the left if the download screen, NOT DaVinci Resolve Studio on the right, which is a time-limited trial. :)

    Good video!! sorry may i missed but, with the free version can you edit 4k videos? thanks in advance

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  6 лет назад

      It depends which definition of "4K" you mean! The "real" one, or the one in very general consumer-tech use. :) The latest version of DaVinci Resolve is version 15, and supports up to 2160p (ie UHD -- 3840x2160). It does not support 4K (ie video resolutions that are actually 4096 pixels wide, such as 4096x2160, as commonly used in cinemas). For true 4K you need DaVinci Resolve Studio. But note that the vast majority of "4K" camcorders or phones do not shoot 4K; they are UHD, whic DaVinci Resolve 15 will edit. :)

      @ExplainingComputers  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, they have now upgraded to version 15. I've just tried the link -- www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/ -- and this works for me, providing access to the free DaVinci Resolve (rather than the paid Studio version). Make sure you shink down your browser window enough (crtl minus) to get the download button on the screen.

    I was originally thinking of not considering this, because it has a confusing interface, but this was very informative and I'm interested now. I am just a little lost about the tabs along the top left of the Edit section. It looks like when you clicked one, other panels changed; not just the one you were on. Those are tabs, right?

    • @ExplainingComputers
      @ExplainingComputers  7 лет назад

      You are right, the panels will change according to what functions are selected. Pro video editors can be confusing at first, but are very good to learn. You may want to look at my follow-up videos on DaVinci Resolve -- I have a playlist here: ruclips.net/p/PL2m2YvnrOYxLl55X8xK7sq8hnSUqnJuUk
