  • In this video we will go through the process of creating a part suitable for 3D printing. The details of how we model this part and finally show it in an assembly. The part is from a masking tape holder that I had previously designed in Fusion 360 and published on Thingiverse here www.thingivers...
    Also in the video I show my start up macro it is available here:

    I was looking for something to watch during lunch and it seems the other day I was wondering how to make a circular slot. Thank you for all the time it took to make this.

    I've been using Fusion 360 for a while but was never happy not being in control of my own files. Today is my first try at FreeCAD and this video was a great first step. Am now watching your video of "5 Tips for migrating...". Thanks a lot for your videos and macros Ian.

      Thanks Justin. I am glad you are giving it a go. I haven't found much that I would need fusion 360 for. Don't get me wrong, it's a great piece of software that I spent many hours learning but, I was greatly disappointed when they changed the licensing. It put up a red flag 🚩 that sometine in the future it will no longer be freely available. Plus, FreeCAD is definitely coming along in leaps and bounds. I definitely recommend version 0.19 for general use. I have been using it exclusively.

    Hey, this tutorial is awesome. Specially good for new people. Thanks.
    I see only one small issue. You've told: When you have a piece that you like, save it. NO! Save things every single change. It is a computer. It will do it. It is just a ctrl+ or cmd+s.

    Again I have to say this was a very good tutorial :)
    I was fascinated to see how all the shaping proesses ran together.
    - sketch 1: the revolve of sketch 1 I would never have known to do.
    - sketch 2: I would never have known to put a square outer around sketch 2 to achieve the three pronged pocket, followed by the wizard like sketch shift by z=-4.05mm to leave an uncut base.
    - sketch 3: the 5mm diameter hole cut through the centre of the base with the radiused cut out arrayed around the edge using the polar array button, was very interesting too see too, as was,
    - sketch 4: the again polar arrayed cut-out in each of the three prongs, on the vertical axis. I almost missed the vertical axis bit.
    The 4mm chamfer at the top was a very nice touch.
    I made a file copy after I had followed the tutorial and did it all again, three times, just to get a better feel for the thought processes in shaping this piece. In my file copy I deleted everything leaving just the 4 sketches and the spreadsheet with it's alises, speeding up focus on the shaping process.
    It would be nice to see how the masking tape holder was shaped, to get more insights ;)
    Again, very nice tutorial :) thanks

    Really enjoyed the tutorial, especially the macros, I will definitely install those. I think you could have commited to the parametric part a bit more, for example the slot through the arms could have been tape_thickness - wall_thickness - some offset. But you showed me that you could offset sketches, for which I used datum planes in the past. That makes a lot of things easier.

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  3 года назад

      Thanks for the feedback. Take a look at the next video, the electronics enclosure, it is completely parametric including the lid on the following video. I find that sometines it makes sense to go all out on the spreadsheet driven dimensions, sometimes not so much, especially if I don't intend to change certain parts. Your mileage may vary. I am glad you enjoyed the video.

    Like others, this is a great project to sharpen up one's skills as being new to FC. I have .19, and really starting to enjoy & learn. I cheat,,use a lap top to watch thevid, and larger PC screen to go through the steps. find this better than making hand notes,,Cheers, great tutorials, and this tape hold fits my learning curve. I am now going to start use the spread sheet to enter in data off hand sketches,,thx, Bear

    I was skipping though looking for the bits I was interested in and happened to see the offset sketch technique (16:30). Why did this never occur to me before? I've been creating datum planes (that's fine and useful, but redundant for things like this) or sketching on a surface (tends to break in some circumstances).

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  3 года назад

      The offset sketch is truly a useful technique, sometimes the datum planes/points/lines are useful too. The topological naming issue makes sketching on a surface risky but you can do it if you know you are not going to radically change your model. I believe the issue may be resolved in the future but not yet in 0.19.

    Do people use multiple spreadsheets in one project often? Why do you have to name the spreadsheet before the variables every time? It makes the expression unreadable.

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  3 года назад

      You don't have to rename the spreadsheet however if you open multiple files all with a spreadsheet named spreadsheet attached you could run into trouble. You can make the spreadsheet something short.

  • @yepitsodex
    @yepitsodex 3 года назад +1

    this is broken if you want to use imperial units. you must specify 'in' at the end of each value in the spreadsheet. Freecad is NOT unit agnostic, internally its treating everything as mm, regardless of what your units presets are

    • @Adventuresincreation
      @Adventuresincreation  3 года назад

      Good point, I always use mm by default. - If you are using imperial measurement you do need to specify that.

    • @theMikeChastain
      @theMikeChastain 2 года назад

      To quote the Wikipedia article because I'm lazy though...
      Standards for the exact length of an inch have varied in the past, but since the adoption of the international yard during the 1950s and 1960s it has been based on the metric system and defined as exactly 25.4 mm.

    • @theMikeChastain
      @theMikeChastain 2 года назад

      The reason I posted this to illustrate that inches are actually based on millimeters by international standard. I live in America but freecad is not broken in that respect.

    • @yepitsodex
      @yepitsodex 2 года назад

      @@theMikeChastain the point you missed is that if you don’t specify “in” after your units, it will get treated as mm, regardless of what you have your default units set to…
