It's impressive when Max flips the page and guesses correctly within 3 seconds, it's beyond impressive that Jake knew who the easy would be before even being handed the paper
I'd like to point out that Lance Johnson only struck out more than 45 times in a season once in his career and only walked more than 40 times in one season. This dude made contact.
Lance was before my time as a Mets fan… yet I was able to guess because he always popped up in my best Mets OF debates I had in regards to guys like Nimmo and Conforto and holy hell I KNEW ONE MAX DIDNT!
Hell yes, knew that Lance Johnson right off the top of my head. Had his baseball card when I was 9y/o and remember seeing that 21 triples stat like it was yesterday.
Lance Johnson was one of my fave Sox as a kid, and definitely a throwback player. He used a giant bat, and slapped so many balls to the gap for triples. He was also a GG-lvl defender that never got his due.
Jake nailing the easy before the sheet was great. The Medium was the first time I got it from just the silhouette. The hard was a damn good one and I had to think about it for a bit. Sometimes being old helps, lol.
Me, a Cubs fan born in ‘89 before the episode started: “ok MAYBE they’ll do Sosa, but there’s no way they’re gonna hit us with Lance Johnson.” Genuinely this is the first RefGuess episode where I got all three in under 3 seconds!
Damn, the first itme Max actually gets one wrong in regulation I get it in 3 seconds. Love the older players on this, it makes it much more interesting.
Glen Allen Hill was a good guess too he was right he had a cup of coffee on that 2000 Yankees team. My guess was Tom Goodwin. Never even heard of Lance Johnson lol that was a really hard one.
Lance Johnson is definitely a name that I was never going to remember until someone said his name and then all my memories of him came RUSHING back into my head. Also, yet another example of how I would have been a STUD at Refguess in the early to mid 90's but am terrible at it now because I don't follow players not on the Mets as closely now as I did when I was a kid and the memories of those players that I had then are just fading into the background.
Surprisingly knew Lance Johnson. Took me about a minute but got it. Mid 90’s - early 2000’s players are my favorite challenges, please keep ‘em coming!
Oh man Lance Johnson was a part of my childhood. I had an easier time with him than Jose Quintana this round! Man these guys have to brush up on earlier eras of baseball. How about we do a round of 90s All-Stars?
I agree cause I know I need to too. I have rarely missed the winner’s circle when it comes to players that started in the 2000s or later. Need to deepen my knowledge of obscure 90s players haha
As a 45-year-old who watches these I really appreciate the LJ one! I was hoping for some more mid-90s guys because that’s right in the wheelhouse for us old folk!
Got Easy off the bat because he’s an ex-Angel, and I managed to figure out hard because of the 21 3B’s. Medium was a shot in the dark because I didn’t remember the answer playing for the Sox or Oakland.
you should do a spin on this where you do players who only played in that one city/state, but they played for every team in that city/state (example: Chicago, Texas, LA, New York…)
Totally different archetypes, but a shockingly good pull when you think about it. Both were 98 Cubs and Y2K Yanks. Glenallen never played for the Sox though.
I love watching everyone struggle with older National League players. The Ref Guess is great, but I'd also be interested in changing the format slightly - like if all players' active years were given to everyone, and then the JM team had to pick one stat line at a time to be revealed, that would be interesting. If I can guess the player with just home runs and awards but it takes you HR, BA, and teams played for, then I would win. Just a thought!
Also, as a Cubs fan of that era, the, admittedly obscure, name Matt Karchner comes to mind when I think of crosstown relievers. Got to see him pitch home games for both teams!
@@silendt Good call on the "in a season" part - definitely didn't take that into consideration. I thought about Karchner too, was srurpsied at first but remembered how bad his stint with the Cubs was.
Wow that was a hard hard one. When he said glenalan hill . I knew he was in the Yankees 00 but I knew he hit more that 34hr in a season and half let alone a whole career
As he announced the theme, I was wondering if Quintana would be in there or if that's too obvious. Then about 2 seconds in I was like, welp there it is. The shark didn't take long either, but I'm definitely way too young to believe Lance Johnson is a real name.
Thank you for picking older players Would love if you tricked them with a reeeeeally old player who was actually legendarily good. Like a Cal Ripken Jr or a Rollie Fingers.
First off, I’m not that bothered that I missed easy. I’m sure like 90% of viewers got it, but I forgot him after he left white sox. But I had no idea who the hard was. I still don’t know who lance johnson is
Gotta take advantage of my one chance of correcting Max-wouldnt say the hard has bookended his career with Rings. More accurately pennants. Since cards didn't win it in 1987.
Jake guessing Easy before getting the sheet is absolutely hilarious
in my head i was like oh both chicago teams?? quintana's gotta be part of this
😂💯
My first obvious thought was Quintana lol
It's impressive when Max flips the page and guesses correctly within 3 seconds, it's beyond impressive that Jake knew who the easy would be before even being handed the paper
Lol
I'd like to point out that Lance Johnson only struck out more than 45 times in a season once in his career and only walked more than 40 times in one season. This dude made contact.
Wowza
Dans baseball knowledge drops my jaw every single video. When will I stop being shocked?
He gets hard and stays hard
With all the gettin' hard jokes he makes, there's no way he could miss a guy named Lance Johnson.
Future theme idea:
Players that started and ended their career with the same team. EX: Albert Pujols
He isnt Dan from Inside Boxing Live. He is Dan from RefGuess.
Jolly made me who I am
Dan's performance had to be the greatest refguess performance of all time
I LOVE the hard jokes. Never stop.
I am older so I got Lance Johnson right away. I have more trouble with the recent players
Dan getting hard and bringing this episode to completion, love it!
Y'know what. Glenallen Hill was a good guess. He was a mid-90s Cub and played about the same period of time. Kudos to Max!
DAN CANOBBIO LADIES AND GENTLEMEN YOUR REFGUESS KING
Lance was before my time as a Mets fan… yet I was able to guess because he always popped up in my best Mets OF debates I had in regards to guys like Nimmo and Conforto and holy hell
I KNEW ONE MAX DIDNT!
First time I've ever been done in by a position player. And strangely the same player guess on this miss as Max. Crazy!
I'm from Chicago and although he was a little before my time (born in 94), I'm surprised I have NEVER even heard of *[hard answer guy]* in my LIFE
Hell yes, knew that Lance Johnson right off the top of my head. Had his baseball card when I was 9y/o and remember seeing that 21 triples stat like it was yesterday.

Lastings Milledge absolutely HAS to find his way into a RefGuess episode in the VERY near future
Never heard of Lance Johnson a day in my life, good shit Dan
I appreciate you recognizing that baseball existed before 2010. It was pretty great, then, too.
Me, a Cubs fan born in ‘89 before the episode started: “ok MAYBE they’ll do Sosa, but there’s no way they’re gonna hit us with Lance Johnson.”
Genuinely this is the first RefGuess episode where I got all three in under 3 seconds!
Update: got Trivia too, but it took me about a minute (I paused)
Ways to defeat Max Mannis at Ref Guess:
1. Go old
2. Guess before you look at the sheet
Bob Howry had 10 saves for both the Cubs and White Sox since 2000. Justice for Bob Howry.
Seeing Dan Canobbio getting hard with Jolly Olive is the best
Well done, Dan!!
A fun topic to do in august when football starts is players who played football in college (Todd Helton, Adley Rutschman, Jeff Samardzija, etc.)
Don't forget Frank Thomas, Bo Jackson, and Deion Sanders. That would be a wild RefGuess
Damn, the first itme Max actually gets one wrong in regulation I get it in 3 seconds.
Love the older players on this, it makes it much more interesting.
Max is only 21?!? With that strong of a record!?! Even more impressed that I usually am despite not getting it today
Glen Allen Hill was a good guess too he was right he had a cup of coffee on that 2000 Yankees team. My guess was Tom Goodwin. Never even heard of Lance Johnson lol that was a really hard one.
Max is 21?! Jesus Christ I am ancient 😅
Also might be the hardest “hard” question they’ve done yet. I was stumped.
Lance Johnson is definitely a name that I was never going to remember until someone said his name and then all my memories of him came RUSHING back into my head. Dan a legend
I knew the Hard but not the easy and medium. I still have some lance Johnson baseball cards.
I thought Max nailed it when he said Glenallen Hill but man, Lance Johnson?!? GH was a good guess though.
I knew it wasn't GH because he hit bombs.
Jake with absolutely legendary move. 🔥
Oh man Lance Johnson was a part of my childhood. I had an easier time with him than Jose Quintana this round!
Man these guys have to brush up on earlier eras of baseball. How about we do a round of 90s All-Stars?

1 Dog!
As a 45-year-old who watches these I really appreciate the LJ one! I was hoping for some more mid-90s guys because that’s right in the wheelhouse for us old folk!
13:11 It's Flash Gordon, not Ace
Hearing Max mention Glen Allen Hill was funny. I played in little league against a team he coached!
All that time rewatching cubs games from 98 4 years before I was born finally maybe paid off- Lance!
As a fellow Old Man, I appreciate you dipping farther back in time.
I'm back in the winner's circle bitches!!! LOL
Tom "Flash" Gordon
Dan just didn’t want to “Flash” us while getting hard
Got Easy off the bat because he’s an ex-Angel, and I managed to figure out hard because of the 21 3B’s. Medium was a shot in the dark because I didn’t remember the answer playing for the Sox or Oakland.
The Kind bar ad placement, spot on advertising team
you should do a spin on this where you do players who only played in that one city/state, but they played for every team in that city/state (example: Chicago, Texas, LA, New York…)
This is pretty poor that so many guys didn't know the One Dog!
Throw a ROD BECK into a future ref guesssss!!! Gotta appreciate that arm swing, beer belly, and FU MAN CHU!
My all time favorite closer, and one of my fave Cubs of all time. RIP Shooter, a legend gone too soon.
Im ok with the Hill guess. Good shot
Totally different archetypes, but a shockingly good pull when you think about it. Both were 98 Cubs and Y2K Yanks. Glenallen never played for the Sox though.
Quintana and Samardjiza came easy to me as 31 year old Cubs fan. And like everyone except Dan I've never heard his name before lol.
the one year Mets wonders that were Lance Johnson and Benard Gilkey
old old old old old old old old, great job dan, I know nothing about the mets the year i was born never would have guessed it
How about players that have played for all 4 New York and Chicago teams?
"That's not a real guy" at 10:52 is gold
I love watching everyone struggle with older National League players.
The Ref Guess is great, but I'd also be interested in changing the format slightly - like if all players' active years were given to everyone, and then the JM team had to pick one stat line at a time to be revealed, that would be interesting. Sox fan here -Jolly forgot Bob Howry. Since 2000, he had 12 saves for the Sox and 14 saves for the Cubs.
It’s not in the caption, but Jolly said “10 or more saves in a season.” Bobby never had a 10 save season as a Cub.
I keep waiting for Dickie Thon to be hard.
Canobbio so good at this
I'm old enough to have seen Lance Johnson play and I've never heard of Lance Johnson in my life
This time Jolly picked 2 easies and an extremely hard lmao
When I heard the theme I thought easy would be Sammy Sosa.
I’m 1) shocked he wasn’t the easy guess, and 2) shocked to not see more of this reaction in the comments.
1994 Lance Johnson with more triples than doubles. Thats a speedy lefty who loves the right field corner and gap.
the only one i got was Lance Johnson - old Mets fan ftw. make them guess old (30's - 60's) hall of famers.
Dan the man, what a dude.
As a Cubs fan, I finally go 3/3 on this game. LET'S GOOOOOO!
As he announced the theme, I was wondering if Quintana would be in there or if that's too obvious. Then about 2 seconds in I was like, welp there it is.
The shark didn't take long either, but I'm definitely way too young to believe Lance Johnson is a real name.
I got each one right in literally 5 seconds. Easy for me since I'm a Cubs fan.
Same because I’m a Sox fan. BUT, Jolly forgot about Bob Howry.
@@cmc_96 Bob Howry would have been a great one. I remember Howry in that infamous Tigers/Sox brawl. The best baseball brawl(s) imo.
Same here!
@@Duke_Scanlan 100% the best brawls. I STILL hate Robert Fick.
Lance Johnson
Max not remembering 2009 is crazy to me I'm a year younger than him and I remember lots of 2009 baseball
Had Lance Johnson in a historical ootp sim so I was screaming “LANCE” at my phone in a public restroom.
Jolly, how about we give them a Ted Lilly ref guess. I think it would be a little tricky for a lot of people
old man dan gave in with the blue chew to perform on this hard question
I got lance Johnson only cuz I’m a White Sox fan, I wasn’t even born yet but I’ve heard of him through the old head fans
Oooh Chicago only stars 👀
Ive never even heard of the Hard round guy so im not mad lol
I never would’ve gotten Lance Johnson wayyyyyy to early for me
The Lance Johnson one was real easy!!!
It makes me crazy how often I miss the medium and then get the hard one.
OLD MAN DAN!!! LETTSSS GOOOOOOOOO
I must be old. I got Lance Johnson right away. No clue on the Easy and Medium.
Thank god I'm a old millennial Mets fan. Nailed the hardie
Dan THE MAN
I would love more players like Lance Johnson and even go older. I know my stat lines of guys I wasnt alive for. Come on crew study up!
Fun Lance Johnson fact - He was (maybe is) the only MLB player to use a 40oz bat.
I mixed up Lance Johnson and Vince Coleman! Both speedy OF who played on the Mets in the 90s, but definitely should got Lance.
I didn’t get hard with Jolly. That was brutal. What a triple machine!
Being an old Mets fan finally gets me hard.
Old 🐐
I got the second so easy but not sure if it’s because I definitely knew it or because of the long hair silhouette
When he pitched for the Sox we called him Flash Gordon!
Thank you for picking older players
Would love if you tricked them with a reeeeeally old player who was actually legendarily good. Like a Cal Ripken Jr or a Rollie Fingers.
First off, I’m not that bothered that I missed easy. I’m sure like 90% of viewers got it, but I forgot him after he left white sox. But I had no idea who the hard was. I still don’t know who lance johnson is
The fact that Dan was the only winner made this video
The idea of Glenallen Hill hitting 21 triples in a season made me laugh.
The silhouette on the last guy looks like Ryan Flaherty.
Add Lance Johnson to the list joining Brandon McCarthy, Gabe Kapler, Brad Ziegler, and Edgardo Alfonzo as the 5 to stump me so far
Gotta take advantage of my one chance of correcting Max-wouldnt say the hard has bookended his career with Rings. More accurately pennants. Since cards didn't win it in 1987.
Surprised myself in knowing Lance, 98 Cubs forever
When was this filmed cause I’ll tell you Cubs fans ARE NOT HAPPY RIGHT NOW
