now touch the clip for extra fun
☠️
It's always more fun when it's almost free!
Well... it's only 5 volts, so...
Nothing would happen, there will be no voltage flowing through your body
@@SuperAbsolute1 You just made me go recheck what voltage it is, and guess what, it's 5V. xD
God putting that 24 pin together together sucks ass, looks like some pristine work man
Why are people saying that you’ll die if you touch the paper clip, 12v isn’t enough voltage to make your skin undergo dielectric breakdown, thus current wil not be able to find a path, this is also assuming you are grounded (which I guess could happen if you were touching the psu case) however the terminals are already shorted to a much shorter path because it’s just a straight wire, and some other people keep saying that somehow an unloaded power supply can burn your house down?
yeah screw all the risk, free fan to cool at when my house went blackout
If it's not working try plugging in something like hard drive or DVD drive into your power supply. Some PSU's need some load to start
Who else recognised the Gravity falls theme song in the background?

nope
Uhh, my hands went kaboom
you can also connect the 12v to the ground for a free toaster

Fans not spinning is actually a good news because the pc owners will know that the psu is dead and not some expensive pc parts😂(unless psu fried some along the way)

Does this come with any risk of damaging the power supply? I work at a tech repair shop, and I want to know about more ways to troubleshoot power issues on computers.

Damn the amount of clueless people here with lack of knowledge is insane. Touching the clip when it's connected is NOT dangerous at all, because, 1. Its a signal. Ground to green wire needs to be connected in order to turn the psu on. And 2. Its only 3.3, 5 and 12 volts. That wont hurt you. Even if its ac.
Though there something I did learn, don't do it at work when your having to test tech for them just let them stay confused. (I was banned from testing technology for them to sell for months)

If it’s a psu with all the wires the same color you’ll have to count them carefully to find the right one
Or just look up a pin out diagram.
Or just trust the process. God idk how I didn’t fuck up mine
Hey, I remember using that trick when testing a old motherboard two years ago, unfortunately it was not working

What happens if you use Bacon Grease instead of thermal paste: day 8 of asking
Dont cook yourself 🥺
Omg he doing it
even more dedication
I'm honestly surprised he hasn't done bacon grease by this point
Reminded me of the struggles I had back in the day.
I had a GPU which required a 6-pin connector, but the motherboard I had lacked a 24-pin connector (it was one of those dell optiplex/hp prebuilts)
So I had one PSU powering the PC, and another PSU only powering the GPU. I had to start the GPU supply first otherwise I wouldn't get a display
oh the struggles haha
Nice lmao I'm at that point ATM hopefully will get a proper motherboard soon lol
I had a similar situation tonight and I managed to get everything running with this video 😁
Holy Shit youtube just trolled me because the video bugged and went black right as u hit the switch I wish I could have screen recorded it istg this is real I'm actually shocked
This is like making the heart beating without the brain
That's actually a very apt description.
My brains heart is pretty small, I want to take the body to a gym but the heart is not strong enough. Will a second heart make the body go to the gym?
It's actually pretty common in society now
true
I tried that to check if my PSU is working and it worked. But the path will depend on the PSU that you have bought. Some PSUs have all black cords so make sure that you are getting the right port
Back when I was in electronics class in highschool and we ran out of proper power supplies for projects in the lab we used to do this to get 5 and 12 volt power, we ended up burning up so many components all the time lmao

Lol my rig has 2 psu, 1 just for graphics card and i have it set up like he showed. And one psu for the motherboard....this not a joke works quite well actually
Fun fact switch mode power supplies (the kind you find in PC's) need a few ohm load to output the correct voltage. So if you have it connected to something that isn't powered on you want to use a resistor to make sure the voltage doesn't spike too high
In any high quality supply there will be internal resistors to do just that
All modern PSUs have smart monitoring that automatically detects output load and adjusts the voltage accordingly
This is super helpfull for buying used powersupplyes!
Can we power a gpu from a different psu which doesn't power motherboard
The motherboard is powered by another psu
Did it work pls anyone explain 😢

DON'T FUCKING DO THIS LMAO, should you put the paper clip wrong you can easily short circuit the power supply and it will be long gone, should you touch it and it will shock the hell out of your finger, possibly shortcircuiting it, and if its covered in plastic, it might just catch on fire
I needed this thanks
Ah yess !! the gravity falls theme in the back.
Use liquid nitrogen as ur thermal paste
Great strategy, using a resistive wire shorting a power supply!! No fire hazards here.
... do you not know how a psu works? Black and green wire needs to be "shorted" in order to turn on pc, as a signal...
@@breezetix and is that wire resistive? What happens if someone touches that wire and they are grounded? I think it’s too hazardous. Besides what is the point of turning it on without using it?
@Chriss4123 you made no sense. Yes the clip is resistive obviously. It's connecting green wire to ground to SIMPLY turn the psu on. If it shorts 3.3n 5 or 12v then psu simply turns off because they have short circuit protection.
@@breezetix Ah, forgot about anti short protection, although that might not be triggered with a resistive wire which would limit the current flowing through it. So based on what you said those wires produce a very low voltage and when they are shorted the power supply turns on?
it doesn't work that way, the PS_ON wire which is green needs to have its voltage level at 0V to be able to turn on the PSU, aka shorting it to ground is the way, but for the rest of the wires, yes it's a hazard
Use paint as thermal paste

I had a broken PSU when building the PC and this test helped me know it wasn't the motherboard but the PSU
Going thru the same thing. Been looking for some way of testing out the psu. Glad i landed here
Some channels be like "HOW to make FREE UNLIMITED ENERGY"
Don't turn it on for long time. It will damage your PSU. It may not run unloaded because regulation circuit has nothing to measure the voltage safe.
It wastes a ton of energy
I've used this trick a lot but I'll give you a warning!. if possible use this only as a last resort, because it widened the power supply pins and kept giving maul direct contact making the PC not turn on I had to use a needle to unbend the pins, it works but here's the warning😉

You must be kidding me.. wonder when RUclips starts kicking you with the other guys from „Darwin Awards TV“ off the platform..
One time my PC didn't turn on and I thought the Motherboard or my PSU died. I guessed it was the PSU, so I ordered a new one. After Cleaning my whole PC and putting everything back together with the new PSU, my PC still didn't turn on 😐
Then I found out about this trick and tested my old PSU. It was working...
So it was my Motherboard that died and I bought a new PSU for no reason. I wish I knew that trick earlier.
I had scrap computer powersupplies that i used to burn and melt shit when i was a kid. i figured out i could turn it on by shorting the green wire to black and then i would connect all the orange wires together and all the black wires together then i would connect those two bunches with thick 6mm wires that i would connect with some old fuse holder sockets and then i would stick in graphite rods extracted from AA & AAA carbon zinc batteries and watch them glow. Even melt shit with it. I once melted a whole glass fuse with that carbon rods & this was well before electro boom made a video. This was in 2013-14 & i was 10-11yo. Never burned my fingers somehow. I had destroyed a lot of atx powersupplies but always had a source of them cus there is a computer scraper nearby & the owner let me take whatever shit i wanted. I even made a whole pc from free scrap in 2015 with a cleron 2.4ghz socket 478 , 512mb ram , 80gb hdd and intel motherboard with onboard graphics..
Commenting from heaven, instructions unclear, I touched the paper clip and suddenly i'm in heaven, probably a teleport error. please fix

My SATA Power cable died. My old psu has all cables build in. So i will only use it for my ssd. To backup and format a m2 to install windows on it. I cant one day without my pc...
And what if you have a PSU with all black wires ???
I prefer to a the 24 pin adapter that is made for this just so I don’t have to lookup the pin out
Too bad I didn't realize this before I returned 2 psus with defective fans. Had to install both into pc and then reinstall my old psu back
"Bomb has been planted"
DO NOT F$(&ING DO THIS!!! You HAVE to include a disclaimer when posting shit like this guy. You serious
Why does this happen?:
24 pin ATX has a PS_ON pin which if shorted to ground, then the power supply will actually start supplying power. otherwise it won't
Here, the PS_ON pin is shorted to ground which means it will supply power

No. Motherboard plugs can vary by manufacturer/era. You want to ground out the PS_ON pin. Look for a pinout for your power supply before attempting this "hack".
My dad did this once, I still use that power supply
Why would I want to use the PSU in first place without a motherboard?💀
My power supply was not powerful enought before i upgraded so i did this wolith 2 1000watt psus

If any of you guys think 5 or 12 volts will shock you, need to do a little research lol. A rough guesstimate of 4 megaohms (4 million) results in about 0.0000024 amps. You'll never feel that. Nor would it ever hurt you.
