Ground to green wire needs to be connected in order to turn the psu on. And 2. Its only 3.3, 5 and 12 volts. That wont hurt you. Even if its ac.

    • @breezetix
      @breezetix Год назад +2

      @Chriss4123 you made no sense. Yes the clip is resistive obviously. It's connecting green wire to ground to SIMPLY turn the psu on. If it shorts 3.3n 5 or 12v then psu simply turns off because they have short circuit protection.

    • @Chriss4123
      @Chriss4123 Год назад

      @@breezetix Ah, forgot about anti short protection, although that might not be triggered with a resistive wire which would limit the current flowing through it. So based on what you said those wires produce a very low voltage and when they are shorted the power supply turns on?

    • @chaddino7601
      @chaddino7601 Год назад +3

      it doesn't work that way, the PS_ON wire which is green needs to have its voltage level at 0V to be able to turn on the PSU, aka shorting it to ground is the way, but for the rest of the wires, yes it's a hazard

    This is very safe to do. Its common practice to do this method to turn on the PSU as it then supplies power to other devices, notably a pump for a watercooling loop to prime a loop without powering up your entire rig, ensuring minimal risk during leak testing! Nowadays many higher end power supplies come with a 24pin female port with the earth and psu on leads pre linked so you dont need to go scrounging for a paperclip like this.

    I've been doing this for years. Computer power supplies make good high current 12 volt power supplies like car radios.

    Tried this like 2 months ago with tweezers when my pc wasn’t turning on just to make sure my psu wasn’t dead. Then I measured the voltage form the separate pins with a voltmeter

    Try to connect the grey wire too with both green and black and now you can put some load on it

    this is a common method for testing PSUs by shorting the 5V PS_ON wire (green) to ground to turn on the PSU without involving a motherboard, but is also a dangerous method to use if there's a short on anywhere, i burned quite a few capacitors forcing the PSU to turn on this way before noticing shorts

    Only works on some power supplies. Some motherboards won't output 12v until there is a load on the 5v rail. Usually this is on more expensive power supplies.

    Beware, running a high power PSU without load (i.e. the mainboard) can lead to overhearting and damage the unit.
