This must’ve taken a lot of emotional labor for him. I appreciate your time and insight.
yeah, you can see he really cares and this history affects him. Yohuru Williams, thank you 🙌🏿
Yep. 3 mil subs, and only 60k+ views? Super telling 👀
I mean its his literal job, so it was probably actually quite easy.
@@Cucumber-ej1pm I’m his daughter and I helped do research on these movies for him. It was quite painful to go through and mentally draining for the both of us.
@@Ella-px1xw Seems like it would be difficult to be a historian if reviewing popular history films caused you that much mental distress. I can only imagine what reading primary documents is like.
it’s seriously sad this video didn’t get as much attention as it deserves bc it was rlly informative!
it needs more views, comments, engagement, everything
all entertaining movies, all incredibly engaging facts given by this man, bravo 👏🏽
People don't like information. They just want to be entertained by silly things
You would think in a world where everybody on both sides is supposedly so into racial harmony this would have as many views as a military expert vid, but yeeaah no.
It will grow in views. Give it time!
It was only recommended to me today.
The extraordinarily powerful movie “ Rosewood “ by John Singleton never gets mentioned
I think it's because it's too extreme for mainstream audiences.
I mean obviously they’re not going to go through every single movie that’s on the topic
@@straightface8564 “Rosewood” is the most powerful movie on the topic
@@GLORYNEVADASMITH ok cool, doesn’t mean they’re going to cover it, or they could do more parts and cover it later on down the line
Because as many things that it got right, it got a number of things wrong as well. Showing certain characters surviving the pogrom that didn't survive in real life (Sylvester Carrier, for example), having a fictional Old West-style gunslinger as the main character who saves several people (who, again, didn't survive in real life) and who pulls himself up a rope while he's being lynched when only one person in American history has ever been known to survive being lynched (James Cameron), and the post-credits text claiming an exaggerated death toll with no evidence to back it up (even survivors' testimonies only went as high as 27 dead).
Watching this in Colombia, I'm black and I'm colombian, sorry, english is not my mother tongue... but I have to thank you. Thank you Yohuru. What is a life worth? What is a black life worth? What is a colombian life worth? What is a colombian black life worth? We are all the same... the same people.
Amen
Gracias hermano , que así sea ⛵
I’m also Colombian (bogota) and I pray for you
This was superbly done. This gentleman clearly knows his stuff, and does an awesome job both respecting the films while also providing historical details and context.
I cannot believe how little circulation this video travelled
I believe it...
Not surprised doe😔
Society...

Why is this video just now getting recommended to me, over a month after it came out?
Exactly
This guy is awesome-please do a part 2!
Hes such a wise, well-spoken, and honesty inspiring man
He's so reasonable, the video would be so much less painful to watch if he was furious whilst explaining all those things...so well bloody played to him.
"Well spoken" isn't a compliment. It has racist origins.
@@dezbiggs6363 ??!!
@@nagygreta5295 1. It usually implies that being well-sponken is an anomaly amoung us. That usually blacks are dumb but that particular person's intellect surprised you. I never see this compliment given to white or east asian people, only children and those with darker skin.
2. And the more typical reason, it undermines AAVE. The reason we are usually not seen as being well spoken is because we have our own dialect. Like anything we do until its appropriated, its been seen as ghetto, unintelligent, or wrong. AAVE is a legitimate dialect with strict grammer and a rich history.
@@dezbiggs6363 i disagree. I myself, and lot of others use this phrase for any race, ethnicity, etc. Its not a phrase used only for black people at all.
Why is this so underviewed compared against the rest of the expert take series
Cause it's 'not very palatable' to the 'everyday person'
@@donstrong9195 I know exactly what you're meaning, sadly
@@robert-zr1kx yup cuz dey gotta figure dat inta da algorithm 🙄😑
It isn't a coincidence that this doesn't have a lot of views
No, this isn’t the kind of think people wanna watch so they don’t watch it
@@straightface8564 A lot of people are interested in this
@@AlexM-mj3sq there are even more who aren’t, you can tell by the view count, other vids that are similar have over a million while this only has 85k
@@straightface8564 And I personally believe it's because the algorithm isn't recommending it to people because It’s a topic that puts the system on trial
@@AlexM-mj3sq the topic doesn’t put anything on trial
This guy literally did not say ONE WRONG WORD. Lolol jeeeez racism is so bad that we have to be able to perfectly elucidate on the dynamics, nuances, and ramifications of it with lazer like linguistic precision lolol
Lol I mean he literally calls them the “exonerated 5” and “jack” Robinson cause it’s known that he didn’t really like being called “Jackie” cause it infantilized him in the eyes of the white community
Who are you talking to?
@@luciusoglesby2469 I did not know that Jack Robinson didn’t like “Jackie”
Bro threw every word in the Oxford dictionary in this 😂 🤣
All of that stuff that was said around 7:40... that was just a LOT to take in. The corruption within our own government and criminal justice system, especially when it comes to social/racial issues, is truly shocking and a definition of Dystopia. Thank you for telling the stories they will never teach you about about in school.
I've watched a lot of these "professional such and such reviews scenes about such and such" and this is the first time I feel like I have actually learned not just the facts about the scenes and the historical context but also leave here with a larger grasp of what movies and scenes should instill in us. A desire to know more. Thank you Yohuru Williams.
Goes to show how RUclips works when there is so few upvotes and views.
This man is absolutely amazing. The way he talks is so informative and it stays with me. I feel as if I can understand what he’s saying a lot better than I would’ve been able to normally.
This was incredibly informative. As an African I always want to learn history of fellow black people and this was an amazing lesson. I have a lot topics I want to do more research on because of this clip. Thank you.
Read/Watch as much James Baldwin, Kwame Ture, and Frantz Fanon as you can.
Oh and of course El Hajj Malik El Shabazz ✊🏿
Black people have feelings too and they are humans
@Sun Tzu well some people have it engrained in their head that anyone that isn’t white is subhuman and it’s not something that gets out of their head easily
@@cheetahluv210 And randomly stating that in a comment is going to do *anything* to change their mind?
Great video. As a history teacher I can't show all the movies I would like to show and also some of these movies are rated R, but I think I might show this video instead when I cover the civil rights movement.
Movies are what started my passion for history
I love when my teacher would roll in the big TV and pushed the VHS in and rewind
A great, thought provoking dissertation on black film/history.
VF, please put his name in the video title with his job title. Do it for all your videos. Thanks!
Pretty sure that they almost never do that...
@@jamestarlos That's why they said to "Do it for all your videos."
@@matxalenc8410 Well, they edited their comment. When I put my reply down, it didn't say that.
It's in the description box
Appreciate this breakdown. Keep em coming :) Ava and spike are awesome but there’s gotta be some other filmmakers to review too
Yeah.
Black Panthers, doing dangerous things like… serving breakfast.
Would have been interested in comments on 'Detroit'
yeah, that movie was really hard to watch!
Naw we good
This gentleman is a treasure. Thank you for this excellent breakdown of these movies!!!!
This one hit hard. Thank you for your eloquent and thoughtful synopsis, it was painful to watch let alone talk about. Thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you for the insight into these painful subjects. Really helpful to have further context for these films on historical moments most of us did not experience first hand.
He makes me want to binge watch all these movies this weekend
do the right thing is amazing
This is the type of content in which I LOVE to indulge. THANK YOU!!!
So incredible. So much of this history I never considered, mainly because as a Canadian I never learned any American history in school. And interesting to know that so much of these films were accurate.
and afro canadian is obscure also. you would not know much of it either
Speaking as an American, you don't learn too much history here either. At least not very much non-white history outside of tiny tidbits. This is why listening to the voices of Black people and experts on history is much better than relying on a system built by and for white people.
@@iamtheonewhotrulyasked you can tell people failed or didn’t pay attention when they leave comments like yours. I’ve learned plenty of “non-white” history. Almost to much, Europeans advanced civilization and should be the focus of history
@@kebabkebob7808
It seems the colonizer mentality never dies
@@419waywardkid5 It seems like you fail to understand the basic fact that Europeans are the ones who built modern civilization.
All these movies are worth watching, especially Malcolm X, Blackkklansman, and Judas and the Black Messiah
More of this, please. Amazing content.
statistic shows that 1/4 of suspects who are innocent but accused of the crime admits in the end just to end the accusation
why this video doesn't have as many views I don't know... but I loved it and would watch his analysis again and again. Thank you for laboring, grappling, but also sharing well thought out insights with us :)
This was fantastic and educational. Thank you for making this video as a platform to share his insights and corrections.
This video really goes to show how much we owe Spike Lee in particular.
Thank you for taking the time to educate viewers sir. I will be looking forward to reading some of your books :)
Thank you for the narration.
Give this man a podcast or an audio book series
What a great breakdown! This will be a great series as there are many mire movies & shows on civil rights.
What an incredibly well read , succinct and most importantly a lay man historian .
I really appreciate this video being free to watch. That must have taken a lot of emotional labor.
This is powerful! Thank you for this, Yohuru Williams, and Vanity Fair. 💪🏿❤️
This is so informative! Thank you so much for this insight, very well said.
this is so interesting. I've seen so many civil rights movies during my life. as a kid, I always wondered how accurate they were. as an teen and later adult, I KNOW how accurate most of them are. 💔 thanks for this analysis.
I think every interrogation should always be recorded
This was the best so far. I loved, Judas and the Black Messiah, I wish he would of went into more detail on that.
Here rewatching this video!!!!! It’s so good!
What an amazing discussion! Loved it! This should be posted all over social media. Dang I wish I could be that poised and articulate.
Thank you for this eye-opening analysis and commentary, sir!
That was unbelievably informative. Thanks!

Thank you for sharing this, very informative and insightful.
Such an informative and important video! Thank you Yohuru Willams.
Thank you very much for making this video. Sadly, I'm just now discovering it a year later.
Really enjoyed this video, please bring Mr Williams back for more.
wow it’s honestly upsetting how little this video has been viewed. Everyone needs to see this.
It is so hard to watch and live in a society where humans are intimate of racism and the system supports and looks the other way what evil exist inside these peopkws souls and those that condone this
thank you for doing this, VF!
This video is soooo informative!!! People should watch this!
Thank you for your time and emotional labor for this. This video did not get the attention it deserves
Amazing and moving 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 i hope more people’s would watch this
Comment for the algorithm. I'd love to see more and I'm eager to catch some docs about my gaps in history now. Thank you!
Wow, I am surprised at what I learned in this video! I had to stop and google every few minutes. Thank you for taking the time to educate us.
This video is amazing. I think it’s so important for everyone to see this.
Beautifully articulate. Should be required viewing in American schools.
Great job, Dr. Williams!
This is one of my favorites in this series. Amazing selection of movies, and the discussion brought up was really good and accessible even to a non-US citizen
Good video, thanks for this one!

This was really informative. Thank you!
Thank-you for this
Thank you for this video very very informative thank you
I've always thought that the Black Power Movement isn't given enough attention. Thanks for this video!
6:08 for the love of god just say capitalism already. People are always trying to talk around the fact that their heroes like Fred Hampton and MLK were actually opposed to capitalism. The Young Lords and Young Patriots were also anti-capitalist and they built their solidarity around the fact that they were all being abused by capitalism. It doesn't matter where you are on the political spectrum, that is what these people believed and the idea was central to their beliefs. Leaving that out is a distortion.
Rest in Power Chadwick

Malcolm X and BlacKkKlansman were fantastic.
The latter starred Denzel Washington son.
He looks like a historian... very intriguing video!
I thought he looked like a salesperson 😂 Lookin sharp though..

Selma is one of my favorite films because it”s about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and the March to Selma Alabama and I seen the movie Malcolm X starring Denzel Washington and Do the Right thing and BlackKlansman directed by Spike Lee and the Hate u give and Green Book. Also 12 years a slave, Lee Daniels the butler and Mandela long to freedom and 42 Jackie Robinson movie and lots more
This video deserves 10x the # of views it has.
Very well spoken speaker on this video 🙏🏽
The dark "history" of the great America.
Even when it's not authentic, the guy is full of appreciation that the movie tried to tell a story because these things do need to be told in any way that moved people.
Great video!
