CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Cypher (Will Smith) tells Kitai (Jaden Smith) the story of how he overcame fear and defeated an Ursa.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Father-and-son space travelers crash-land on a desolate planet Earth 1000 years in the future, and fight to find a way back home in this sci-fi action thriller from director M. Night Shyamalan. It's been nearly a millennium since mankind was forced to flee their home planet for the safety of Nova Prime, and in that time Earth has grown increasingly hostile to human life. Gen. Cypher Raige (Will Smith) has just finished an extended tour of duty when he reunites with his 13-year-old son Kitai (Jaden Smith), and begins making the transition from military leader to father. When an asteroid storm damages their ship, however, a badly injured Cypher and his son are forced to crash-land on Earth. Now, the only way for young Kitai to save his father's life is to find the rescue beacon that was lost when their ship came plummeting through the atmosphere. In order to survive and succeed, Kitai will have to become the type of soldier who would make his father proud. Zo Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo co-star.

I'm not going to lie. I was going through a hard time in my life when this movie came out. A lot of anxiety and stress. Once I saw this I took it to heart and it helped out tremendously

The thing is fear isn't a choice,it's a natural instinct that we use to get us out of dangerous or lethal situations. You can't just switch fear off and most of the stuff in this movie makes zero sense. People can be trained to not get scared at certain situations,their are brave people that still feel fear. It just shows how dumb it is,cause will smith's emotions in this movie are like switching fear off,and then becoming unable to show emotion,which doesn't make sense. He yelled at jaden(DENIED SIT DOWN!) After that he had never shown any emotion in the movie. It's like a disability.

Also apply to you who got bullied, the bully can "sense" your fear from how you react in their presence. When you no longer in fear, they can't see you. They can't do anything to you. Bully is bad for sure, but blame them just gonna make you feel worse because you can't control people's behaviour. Change how you react and your environment will also change, guaranteed.

Every day when I was in the hospital, I Remember I would watch this movie in bed! This had been a great movie! I was a sophomore back then!
I bought this movie because it spoke volumes to me. Every now and then I watch to remind me, encourage me and inspire me.
I come back to it once in a while as well. Doesn't deserve the hate at all.
And until these days i still feel it and use this as motivation..

@Mister Merveille What I mean is that humans are nothing but advanced biological machines (not mechanical) in the world of science. But just like an advanced machine of other sorts, there are always faults. It is not perfect. So I don't necessarily think all instincts are for the better, especially if it causes you to freeze up in a life-death situation.

Will Smith: Why does everybody always crap on my movie choices? I know there's ton of things I'm not proud of but I did this movie because I loved the idea of working with M. Night Shyamalan, damn it! Even if it were for just a paycheck!
I proved what he said was real because I was so scary of needle until one day I become really sick and I had to do a blood test . on that day I decide is either I find out what is wrong with me or stay sick and from that day I was never afraid of needle again!

I am also genuinely curious as to why a lot of people seem to hate this movie so much. The only things I've been able to gather is that they don't like Jaden Smith and his acting. Which is fine though I thought he did a fantastic job. But for me not liking one person's acting isn't nearly enough to hate an entire movie. I've never heard any of the haters say anything about the story, characters, character development, themes, or the execution of any of these...
@@dmaster1701 Watched it yesterday, thing is as a character Kitai confuses me.. You're introduced to him as an ambitious overachiever, but doesnt even have the physicality as his peers.. Then later in the movie he unravels and fliches at almost every incident, , not showing any traits of training, except the ability to run long distances and use of the cutlass.. Just think his character had too many holes, Will Smith carries this movie, while Jaden Smith is almost a distraction..
I think it had to do with people's expextations.

I thought it was a fairly decent movie when it came out because I like sci-fi but when the kid jumped off that Cliff with the wingsuit and I noticed that he didn't have a parachute, that ruined it for me. How on After Earth was he supposed to land? I know it's just a movie but come on.

Actually, you are wrong.
The rain coming down where Jaden is during this scene would not necessarily have been audible too his father for several reasons.
The 2 characters are not together, Will is speaking to Jaden using some sort of communication device.
