great video and photography. been up there a few times some years back so this brings back some pleasant memories. That lowest lake in the basin was full of very small brook trout when we camped and fished there. We fished the next two lakes up and caught larger brook and rainbow trout. The last day we fished the highest lake in the chain which is around 11,200. We caught a couple of 12-13-inch golden trout, I caught mine on a small orange Berkley plastic worm on a Carolina rig. We headed back out the next day and it started snowing when we got up to Mono pass, so we exited all the way back (I think about 9 miles) to the parking lot, it was snowing the whole way out. It was late August.
@@tortoisewhisperer1580 Thank you! Sounds like an amazing trip! I would LOVE to catch a golden trout! I don’t think I’ve ever caught one. I use a red and gold Thomas Buoyant most of the time. It seems to be the best all around artificial lure for Sierra trout. Pioneer basin is a great place to camp and spend a couple days in… weather permitting!
It’s November now, no more backpacking for the season. So I’ll watch your exploits while on the treadmill, staying fit, for next July. It’s such a long time! I like your videos. You capture the essence of the trail.
@@227oldtrees It does seem so far away! Perhaps it’s time to invest in snowshoes? I’m not sure, I haven’t used snowshoes for a backpacking trip in a very long time. Maybe I’ll head out to the desert! Thank you for watching!
I haven’t tried snowshoes. But I do day hikes north of the town of Mojave. That’s an interesting geologic area, with many colors, old mines, and miscellaneous goodies scattered along the ground
@ when driving north on the 14/395, about 20-ish miles north of the town of Mojave, look for signs to “Red Rock Canyon, and Jawbone Station.” On Meetup, Kern Valley hikers posts these desert day hikes in the winter. I got tired of doing the Santa Monica mountains backbone Trail. I like the mines and interesting geology, interesting colorful rocks, and sandstone, and a bit of history in the Mojave area. I don’t think it will let me attach any photos. But it shows uplift and holes in canyon walls that had been either mines or food storage caves for the miners. Other interesting places in there are called “nightmare Gulch.“ and something like lost city. It’s these sandstone formations that are a miniature of Bryce Canyon. Very miniature, so don’t get too excited.
@ That does sound interesting. I know exactly the areas you’re talking about but have never explored them. Sounds like a good winter retreat. I imagine you would have to haul your own water for overnight backpacking. Thanks for the suggestion!
I enjoyed your video capturing the beauty of that trail. The ascent from Mosquito Flats to the summit of Mono Pass is tough, for me anyway, but it's all downhill from there until you hit the JMT if you're going that far. I've explored the Pioneer Basin on the map only, but I'd like to actually try it out. From the looks of your video it appears to be well worth the effort.
@@rkatrails Thank you! I’m glad you got something out of it! Yes Pioneer Basin is worth it and not that difficult to get into. The trail going in is very manageable without any difficult scrambling or talus. The Basin itself is easy to navigate and fairly easy to travel. I think this one is especially good if you like fishing!
Great footage of the Sierra. Takes a lot of work to get these kind of shots. Also, I believe I have the same tent as you and I've used it on a number of adventures in the Sierra. It's about impossible to be UL with recording equipment. I do mostly UL so I can carry camera gear and not be too heavy!
@@speed_of_a_human Thanks for your comment, I appreciate it. Yes, for those of us hauling camera gear ultralight is impossible. But at least we can lighten our loads with things like dyneema composite tents. The tent in this video is the Aeon Li from Tarptent. It’s small and very minimal, but it definitely does the job and only weighs one pound! I love it and when set up properly it’s pretty bombproof.
@@WalterLockwood Yup, that's the tent I've been using! I used it on a trek deep in King's Canyon this summer, and it's great for the weight. A bit finicky at times, but worth the effort.
@@chili1593 Thank you! The Eastern Sierra is absolutely gorgeous. The wind wasn’t really brutal… but bad enough to want to get out of there. And by the next day it would have gotten worse. And a cold front was moving in. At the end of October, this was probably the last moderate weather hike of the season.
I've been there many years ago and I noticed you didn't show the killer steps on the far side of Mono pass going down into Pioneer Basin. They are burned into my memory and both my friends memories. Caught some nice Brookies and Goldens there.
@@tired7140 Yeah, I wish I had taken more footage heading up to Mono Pass coming back from Pioneer Basin. I think I was nervous about getting out of there before dark. As it was I still had to hike the last mile or so with my headlamp. Absolutely need to get back up there!
Mono pass is a moonscape that feels like it is the top of the world. I have never taken an means to record visuals. I have memories that fade. Then I can go again for the first time.
