Aha! Just read this after posting my reply to your first message! Yes, it is worth a visit! We are all good over here mate. The weather is terrible (a few trees blown over this morning) but nothing like the storms up North!
Hi Tom. Once again a lovely interesting walk and History lesson... I did go on and read the whole story, it really was another world back then... Hard to imagine tbh Anyway Isn't the countryside wonderful. I live on the out shirts of a city but when I visit my 2 sons they both live in what we call "an area of outstanding natural beauty" it's so peaceful.. I think I'm a country girl at heart. We had a farm estate with acres to roam and all the animals you could imagine My dear mum used to say when she lost me i was sure to be in with the animals . Looking forward to part 3 now Tom. 🤔Now that you have dropped a hint. ☘️☘️
Hi Christine, yes it is lovely to get out in the countryside........mind you, I loved living in one of the world's busiest cities for 15 years! 😁 The disaster in Part 3 is not that exciting I'm afraid! 😁👍🏻
😮 wow Tom and Paddy 🐕🥩🦴 g what a absolute beautiful walk and history lesson ✅ the shrine wonderful now people think off all the bravery in those terrible days i didn't know you was into pink Floyd dark side of the moon 🤔 that was me at the weekend never off ✅ PS thanks for the info on the Madeira restaurant maybe they have upsticks and returned home 🤔 well boys thanks for the 🎥 all the best John 😊😊
Definitely a must see for a future visit, despite being a bit tucked away. Perhaps combined on a trip to the zoo. Beautiful but a little somber today. Being able to visit Jersey often and being able to see the many structures and fortifications still left over from the war has given me deeper appreciation for those who were directly involved and affected. Including the residents under occupation, all the ones serving such as that young Frenchman, your uncle and my own Dad who served as an American army ranger in Europe during that conflict. Such a peaceful corner of the island. Like me, your priorities were vastly different as a very young man! 😂. Understandable that you wouldn't have wandered around the area much back then. A pleasure as always to be able to come along.
Hi Robert, lovely words my friend! A few years back I visited The Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial located in Colleville-sur-Mer (I also visited the British and Commonwealth cemetery as well) and couldn't believe how emotional the experience was. Thank you for your father's service! As you mentioned.....priorities change. One of my top priorities nowadays is waking up and getting out of bed each morning! 😂🤣😂🤣👍🏻
Ahh, so sad x It's lovely that there is a memorial, time to reflect, lest we forget x Oh such beautiful houses - how the other half live indeed! Fancy coming across your old home! I very often pass my childhood home and although the area has changed it's also still the same if you know what I mean, I know it well even though I haven't lived there for over 40 years!!! Paddy energetic as ever
Hi Jean, yes it is a strange feeling looking at a place you used to live in! When I pass my old house in town I always feel a bit sad. Ah well, we all move on! 👍🏻
Hi Tom, I'm just catching up with your videos after returning from Somerset over the weekend, where I've been with my line dance group. I love these off the beaten track videos, and walked quite a few of them last year. I look forward to walking some more of them this year, and this is a definite must do. The stories about the Pilot and your Uncle were most interesting, though of course very tragic and sad, we owe them so much. I actually watched the Great Escape for the umpteenth time over Christmas, its always been one of my favourite films. As for the German occupation I think I've bought nearly every book there is!! Such a terrible time, but so many amazing people and fascinating stories and diaries. This walk is a delight, but as I look forward to part 3 and your hint at problems, I hope it doesnt involve another fall!!! Thank you for showing us parts of Jersey we would never discover apart from these videos. It's hard for my friends to comprehend how I can still find new things to see on such a small island, the number of times I've been😅
Hi Valerie, I hope that you had a great trip to Somerset with your line dance group (didn't you go last year as well, or am I imagining that?). 💃🏻🕺🏻🎶It is great to hear that you enjoy the off the beaten track walks as I'm sure that this year there will be plenty of them. It is believed that Bernard was re-captured when a German soldier suspected him and another escapee and asked one of them a question in English, to which they replied without thinking in the same language. I believe this was in the film although I haven't watched it for many years. Isn't it strange how there are still places I am discovering for the first time on the island.........mind you, it could be my dodgy memory - I was editing a video this morning about my favourite beach Beauport and could not remember how to get there for a full 5 minutes!!!!!! 😣😕😖😁👍🏻
Yes, I did go on the line dancing weekend last year, fancy you remembering that😂 There was the scene in the film where the escapee accidentally answered a question in English, a very tense moment. Have a great week Tom and I hope you manage to get some golf in!!
Many brave men and woman during a horrible time in history who sacrificed their life’s in the name of freedom. It’s nice that the French pilot should be recognized for his bravery and your uncle also Tom, all young men who fought too secure our freedom. You have indeed shown grand properties of how the other half lives and it’s been the case for many years and is probably very good for the Island. Do they still have the orchid foundation in Victoria village Tom. The house was probably a stop gap between moving on to somewhere permanent and it gets lost in your memory. Thanks for the walk down the lanes.🏌🏻♂️& 🐕🦺
Hi Ted, thanks for your comment as usual all you say is spot on! As for the Eric Young Orchid Foundation it appears to be going strong.......in fact I had to look it up to see if it was still going and now you've got me interested in visiting it! 😁👍🏻
What a beautiful and fitting memorial to Bernard, Tom. Such an awful story.... he almost made it. We can never forget all the young men like Bernard and your uncle for their bravery❤. Do you have his medals, Tom or are they in a museum? Beautiful part of Jersey you are walking through and a relatively busy road, pedestrian wise😂. I hope Paddy doesn't have an injury, wee man😢
Hi Sheila, my oldest brother has the medals and I photographed them and my uncle's log book (which makes interesting reading) a year, or so, ago. It's funny......I was surprised as well about seeing anyone walking around near Victoria Village! I think Paddy likes to occasionally put on a limp and he always does the hop and skip thing! 😁👍🏻
Hi tom that is a must see memorial to a brave soul. Your uncle included. Your uncle must have been a very experienced pilot to have flown a mustang .he probably had flown the mustang in Italy as he has been awarded the Italy star ,your uncle probably had flown the mustang deeper into Germany as well because the aeroplane was upgraded to carry extra fuel tanks.a lovely walk and a great tribute to two very very brave young men .p.s. I have been to stallag luft 3 the Germans had cremated the 50 to hide their crimes.
Hi Brian, I can see you know your stuff.....my uncle John's medals were DFC, 1939-45 Star, Italy Star and 1939-45 War Medal. I believe that most of the escapees were murdered separately, or in small groups, wherever they were re-captured (not altogether as was depicted in the film) cremated and their ashes sent back to Stallag luft 3, as a warning to other prisoners. I photographed my uncle's log book as well as his medals and some letters including one from his commanding officer (W.H. Boulton) to my grandfather, in which he writes "His leadership, as well as his courage were of the very highest. He had the complete confidence of those who flew behind him and I know his spirit led them on to do more than once what under a less inspiring leader they might not have done so well". His two page letter is lovely to have!
@@thereluctantoutdoorsmanhi tom thank you so much for your families information by sharing this information about these brave men their names and sacrifices live for evermore. Referance the 50 escapees ashes they were placed about a mile down the road in a church yard from stalag luff 3 an alter type memorial is there, and at stalag 3 there is granite type slabs showing the whole length of the tunnel with the 75 names the ones painted in blue are the ones that were shot ,chilling but a b james was one that was shot ,chilling but my grand father was called a Harris as in bomber Harris.. thank you once again tom for showing us all this wonderful island and your families sacrifices
Thanks Brian for all the information .....very interesting! I'm assuming that your grandfather wasn't actually "Bomber Harris" but just happened to have the same name right? 😯 Funnily enough Barnes Wallis of "bouncing bomb" fame had a very close connection with my old school (Christ's hospital) having been a pupil there and later on designing the changing rooms when the school moved to Horsham.
Yes the people of 1930/40s were stronger than now. As for PG alway wondered if his hips need to be looked at due to his wee kick now and again. Love to be proved wrong!!
Oh dear Tom, I have a confession to make, I have been telling my wife for the last three videos that your camera was starting to lose its focus. Forgetful Brad cleaned up the computer and re-set everything, screen quality left at 360 not 1080 HD. At least I will get to view the videos again. You seem like you are giving your heart a workout with the speed you were walking. I am enjoying the walk as I have never been to the zoo area.
😂🤣😂🤣 Nice one Brad! That reminds me of the time 30 years ago when I was watching a movie on my high tech laser disc player in Hong Kong and I watched the side of the disc with the second half of the movie on first! For a good hour I was thinking this is the strangest movie I have ever seen! 😁👍🏻
Beautiful video tom thanks
Thank you my friend! 👍🏻
Another interesting video Tom 👏 must make a visit to the memorial next visit. All good this end and hope all is well with you and family 👍

Hi John, yes I'm still a massive Pink Floyd and David Gilmour fan. I love my music. I hope that you've had a good weekend mate. 👍🏻
Love the green lane walks
Thanks Jackie......there will definitely be more to come! 👍🏻😁

"Lest We Forget" their sacrifice, which enables us to live in freedom today.
Well said! Thanks for your comment. 👍🏻
