Quit it if you want to.
Don't quit just if you're told. Unless you agree with the same assertions.

@Strider that's what discussion is about. There's a market for free form discussion on the internet. Also you have to be em careful with, "discerning as facts" because often times people are just speaking casually, you yourself can discern what is fact and fiction and discuss with Nihongo Gamer as to why what yes saying it's haha information, and discuss. But yo just barr him for discussion entirely is just... Not cool?
For example, often times in the SMT/Persona community there plenty of discussion whether persona is an SMT game or not. In technically YES it is, but with those conversations you can probably discover some nuisance that might make you think, "huh. while I still agree that Persona is an SMT game, I can UNDERSTAND why you'd think it isn't and maybe we can come to truth together on this topic." That is the purpose or subjective conversation, to understand and express another pov. Objective conversations, (ex . teaching or in a meeting) is meant to inform and learn. But, I digress.

He's clearly VERY bothered by this, and it's only 1 comment/troll. I explained if they're planning on playing online and especially streaming then he's better have a strong head on his shoulders because when/if he gets bigger there will be a lot more trolls, and by shedding light on this issue is just feeding into the troll behavior. I may be wrong, but I feel strongly about this.

    • @Kamiyouni
      @Kamiyouni 5 лет назад +1

@@ctrl_alt_deleter I just think Nihongo Gamer is very analytical when it comes to social behavior and why we do what we do. Yes, he was triggered in a sense, but, he really thought about why he was.

    • @ctrl_alt_deleter

@@Kamiyouni Yeah, i can definitely see that. You can tell that it really does bother him. Other than ignoring the trolls he needs to figure out why it bothers him, considering it was a simple "You such at this comment," because there are way worse comments that should be issued bans on stream, but aren't because other streamers have figured out how to not be bothered by them. I still think he should learn how to have a stronger mindset, as well as figure out deep down what's the cause of the emotional stressed caused by one comment, even though light, still managed to break him down and almost cry like he mentioned later in the vid.

What you said about "don't take it so seriously" really hit home for me. I feel REALLY bad whenever I'm told "it's just a game" when I'm legitimately trying to go all out learning how to play because it's the one thing where I feel like I can eventually be reasonably good to play in tournaments and the such, but people around me just bring me down by telling me I shouldn't take it so seriously. Like, why are you actively trying to take what I have from me? I feel like I could've advanced so much by now if it wasn't for that.

The majority of my RUclips subscriptions are professional fighting game players, musicians, illustrators, animators and game developers and I have to say that it's a great relief seeing a casual player just doing their thing. Sometimes, I even feel like I could benefit your play by sharing my own knowledge in the comments. And the fact that you read and reply to comments makes your channel even more interesting. I think that your interaction with your viewers is one of your channels strongest points.
Also, your tech reviews are perfect. You tend to look for just the right things most reviewers tend to ignore. I think that back in the day, your review of the Wacom Mobilestudio Pro was the most useful one on RUclips.

There will always be people out there that say mean things, sometimes the mean things may have something actually to them, but the important thing to remember with any kind of negativity is that it always comes from a bad place in that person's life, and the worst thing you can do is take that and internalize it.
Surely I've told someone at one point that they suck.
I only said it because I was unhappy. And as you can imagine, it didn't do me any good at all.

I needed to hear this. Even despite my particular show's (mostly slow but) steady growth, every once in a while I get burned out. THAT'S when the negative comments usually get posted. Bad timing.
Like you, it's puzzling why a small comment would stick in our head when any other time we wouldn't even pay attention to it.
I just posted a video I really liked making and within 7 views it got a thumbs down. It bothered me for a couple hours. Then I remembered it's just one person. In the same amount of time 3 new subs rolled in.
So, I guess the moral is, for anyone possibly reading this, if you put yourself out there you're going to have to take the good with the bad. Take stock of the balance. If it's mostly bad, maybe have a critical conversation with yourself. If it's mostly good, even 51%, then honestly it's working.
No matter what, do it because you like to do it. You'll notice that the people being rude don't ever create content themselves.

This video reminded me a lot of a quote in a book I read called "I Want to Eat Your Pancreas" by Yoru Sumino. It says "As is often the case with words, all of their meanings depend on the sensibilities of the listener, not the speaker." It really does make you want to be more careful with your words knowing how one thing you say can come off completely differently to a person just because they thought of it in a different light, or because of some other unknown factor. Great video as always!

This is so true, i agree with many of your points here. Acknowledging your sadness is important, if you repress it and leave it unresolved, it may pile up and strike even harder at a later time. It's okay to be sad, but social media doesn't make it seem that way. Indeed, sometimes I feel like I'm the only one feeling depressed, since the people around me seem to all be doing well, based on what they post on social media. It really makes the negative feeling worse. Thank you for this video. Toxic comments will probably never go away from the internet, but know this, I appreciate your videos, they have made my days better, and I'm sure its the same for many others! People can disagree with something you say, but they don’t have to be disrespectful about it. I don’t make it my job to go to every negative comment about the Razer Raion D-Pad, and respond with “You just suck dude.” That D-Pad gets way too much hate imo, but everyone’s entitled to their opinion. Good brew as ever. Creating anything is hard, but criticism is very easy. In criticising something, it's a very potent part of the brain that gives that critic a feeling of elevating themselves above the thing they're dumping on, which is why we instinctively love harsh critiques. That said, the criticism that cuts the deepest is usually the most helpful. If "you suck" is all they got, you should ask for a real roast.

If it makes you feel any better. I think you're fantastic at fighting games. I learn a lot of things watching your videos. If a bad comment makes you want to quit. I hope good ones keep you going.
Now I'm gonna go make myself a coffee.

Remember #1: Trolls are just friendless pricks of little to no value and thus feel the need to enforce/emphasise their feelings to others.
So what if you're bad at some of these games? So what if you suck? We're all still learning. We're all aiming for improvement.
Remember #2: You do you, we'll all still love you regardless.

General advice from personal experience: If after really thinking about something a lot, you want to give up, but for whatever reason, just have a feeling in your heart that this thing is right. Follow it. No matter how many negative thoughts or people's own suggestions you get, just carry on. I don't know why, but this super stupid advice has worked for me in the darkest times, so it might help you too :) Good Luck

Cyberbullies are cancerous. But what you said about "them not existing in this world" did open my mind and that there are cons to it which is: we need balance between good vs evil, light vs dark, etc. And the con of a world without these bullies that stood out to me was the absence of "thick skin development" or rather we will have a fragile character and can easily be broken by mere hurtful insults in the future. So as much as I hate cyberbullies, if you approach them in a positive way you can "use" them as "character development" to help you be stronger to survive in this harsh world.
Good speech, by the way. Continue doing what you love and stay positive. ^w^

I feel most people watch and support a channel is for a particular reason based on that channel's brand of content (a summation of its editing, topics, personality, purpose, and style). And that reason is different for another channel they also watch and support, even if they are similar in scope or content. For instance, I don't watch you for high level gaming / fighting game content, but how you present that content and your lifestyle is what I stick around for and gets me coming back for more. Alternatively, those qualities that I love about your channel is not the reason why I check out JWong's content, because I can tell that his content isn't meant to provide that same experience -- and even though while there is a noticeable difference in execution of your channel's content compared to his, I still enjoy what execution for however little or much goes into JWong's content. Your channels are separate, so too is the way and why you execute your content that you upload, and there's a lot of value with being a fan of either of your channels -- gaming skills aside. While not the best comparison, I think it does a good enough job illustrating why supporters of your channel or supporters of any channel for that matter watch and support the content of the channels they like: its for what that channel can provide that another channel cannot.
I know that life can be a wild and unpredictable thing, so I hope that you and everyone else is having a great week, and if not, that's okay too. Hope that all turns out well. Take care everyone, and spread kindness :)

You have confirmed my thinking, that it's not the comment but the timing of it that makes it bothersome. Probably if you're in a good mood a 100 times worse comment won't even bother you or you'll even have a great comeback for it. Also, the nature of online commenting is texting, which makes it difficult many times to communicate the actual tone of the message - sometimes even a joke can be interpreted wrong. And that's why i overuse the smiley face everywhere :)

Yknow I actually look up to you. The fact that you take so much time and effort to learn the mechanics of a game. I'm really really bad at fighting games. It inspires me a lot when I see someone take the time to improve when I myself would give up and just stay away from the genre completely. Fighting games are a on a completely different level than the genres that I'm into. Don't stop what you are doing. You aren't the best, but that doesn't mean you can't get better.

This is a very well articulated message that needs to exist. The fact that anyone has even downvoted this video shows that negativity and trolls on the internet will unfortunately always be an issue. Most people play games because they enjoy it and not necessarily because they are good at it. While some may play games as a career the majority enjoy it as a past time. If only people good at games were allowed to play then it wouldnt be much of an industry. Being good at something doesnt mean you have the charisma or personality that people enjoy watching in these kind of videos. Keep the videos coming mate.

There are people in all walks of life that cannot say or do anything nice. It's easier for someone to show their online macho much easier than if they had to say it to someones face. It's easy to say don't let it bother you. If you enjoy what you do, keep doing it. When it stops being fun, then it may be time to reavaulate. I am not a big fighting game fan but i enjoy watching your videos. Keep up the good work.

It's by human nature that we strongly remember negative over positive. However, negative experiences becomes less effective the more we experience it and that it's a must have in life to have a meaningful life.
As an artist I wish there were more 'constructive' negative comments rather than simple useless comments such as "You suck" and not explain why they though so.

  • @heefmvc
    @heefmvc 5 лет назад +1

To your first point, I would say that, at least in my own experience, the intense reaction a negative comment/response mostly comes from time investment. It’s difficult to be told you’re inadequate if you’ve put so much time into a hobby or activity or job, and it happens at any level regardless of skill level. I’m good at fighting games, but a loss even against someone of a higher skill still feels like I’m terrible, like I’m not capable or worthy of playing/helping other people. Criticism can be a great thing if the comments are specific, but something like “you suck,” just feels bad. It’s like, you know they have a point, and even if it doesn’t relate to the purpose of what you were doing, it still stings, and you feel like you can do better.
As for your points on social media, I agree totally. You always see the good, the beautiful, and the happy. Sure people make minor complaints at times, but more often than not it feels like they’re trying to not-so-subtly remind you how great they are.
Sadness and doubt are some of the strongest tools people have that lead to self improvement, but I feel like the invention of social media has made people scared of that negativity. They feel that they HAVE to be accepted and praised by others to be consider worthy, but the truth is, they don’t.
If I can affect a few people positively, even if it is through sharing my hardships and bad moments with them, then it’s worth it 100%. Doubt is something that is present in everyone, at any level. Same thing with sadness, and other “negative” feelings.
That’s why it’s the people who really open up to you in moderation that make the best friends.

I've had people come to my channel while I'm streaming and tell me i'm too old to be playing games - i just laugh and tell them to get off my lawn. some people just enjoy being unhappy and spreading that around - enjoy what you do and understand that waaaaay more people enjoy your content than don't. Also - it's because of you that I chose the Huion Kamvas GT-191 tablet :) (thanks for that) (edit - also, if there was no sadness, there would be no happiness - you can't truly have one without the other).
