What a gift to the world, Mr. Belafonte. You brought the protest songs of Calypso to the world stage and subsequently brought global folk music from diverse geographies, to the world. Such deep personal and emotional intelligence must have inspired you. Thank you. Rest peacefully. You have served well.❤
"Gold" never tarnishes. I once went to a concert when he sang this song. His talent branded my heart, and I loved this song...and still do. And too, him. He still lives through his music and I Remember.
A song about getting old. September, autumn, is when we say goodbye to youth forever. You think you're old, but when you enter winter, close to the end of life, it's good to look back at when you were younger.
I haven't heard this song for so long. It's certainly a pleasure to hear it again after some 25 odd years. Now that I am in the autumn of my life, this song certainly has a lot more meaning. God bless everyone who had the great fortune of growing up with such great singers as Belafonte, Sinatra, Beatles, Elvis, Streisand, ABBA, etc.
can you believe that voice? what an amazing pure, soft and velvet sound it has. The words are timeless and so is Mr. Belafonte's performance which makes me cry because of its beauty.
Probably my favorite singer of all time. My late dad had three of his albums in the early 1960’s and I have been listening to him since I was10; I am now 64. I do prefer his elegant, restrained style of this period of his life and career. As he aged, and his stardom grew, his stage style became more produced and his voice heavier and raspier. The young Belafonte was one of a kind, and so versatile.
This is one of the songs deeply engrained in my childhood memories....even though I was born after Belafonte recorded this cover, it was an integral part of my growing up. I'm getting all nostalgic...and obviously, the song's lyrics is only increasing the nostalgia!!
Have enjoyed Harry Belafonte's rendition of this nostalgic song for many, many years. Hearing it again recalls the same feelings it engendered some 50 years ago.
Lui
I remember being young and seeing harry belafonte twice. first time was in central park.he was on a bicycle and his very young daughter was with him. second time was at the Palace theatre,on broadway, where he performed and was a smash hit.america owes Harry Belafonte so much.
Definitely one of the greatest voice of all time singing such a touching, emotional song. I usually don't rate artist against each other but no one sings this song like Mr Belafonte. From the beautiful, tranquil Islands of The Bahamas 🏝️🌅🏖️🇧🇸
MR HARRY BELAFONTE is the full package, he's completely different, what an amazing all rouder SUPERSTAR, THE FIRST SINGER TO WIN THE GRAMMY AWARDS back in those day's it was AKA the Gramphone awards. THE BLACKSTONES
Thank you to Ronald White for this video. Harry Belafonte was one of my favourite singers when I was a child his beautiful mellow voice was always soothing. Being able to still hear and see, the virtuosos of yesterday is a wonderful thing especially for later generations.
This was one of my mother's favorites, and she has been dead for many years now. Tried to find in Sept to share with my husband, and he recognized and said his Dad used to sing this ( even though we are from different cultures and languages)!

Hauntingly beautiful."Without a hurt, the heart is hollow." Only if our own hearts have ever been hurt , can we know how to truly love another. One of the best songs ever written.
Last year at the end of September .. my little and lovely dog died. We always stayed together.. all these days of September. So this song me makes remember of this my true and little friend..
Oui, chanson magnifique !

Our math teacher sung this at our grades overnight camp, for the talent show. And somehow, I felt like I recognized the song. Now that I hear it, I don’t think I ever heard it, but somehow it’s still nostalgic. I do still miss the days when I was just a freewheeling kid. I guess I’m still a kid, though.
Mon Dieu !
I had the huge luck that my Mama who loved him so much took me to his concert in 1978. Love you, Sir, with all of my heart, not only because of your music... Whished you knew how much you mean to me. I remember so well. It helps now in this cold. Thank you, Sir
Despite my visual impairment, I am happy that my hearing is still perfect. So that I can continue to enjoy harmonious sounds. This is a beautiful duet.
I remember my mother would sing this...I woke up remembering today and posting this and the lyrics on my Facebook. Lost Dad this year but still have Mom. Moments to treasure. I never imagined how hard losing Dad would be.
There are six different recordings by Harry Belafonte of this song. This one was from the very rare album BEL-1 recorded in Stockholm, Sweden 1966 for a beneficiary concert for Martin Luther King.
Danke, Harry ♡

Quite right you are. Also Belefonte's rendition of of 'Scarlet ribbons' is also very remarkable.

I love the way he lags so much behind the beat. Trying to remember can't be more explicit than sung that way. What a great performer indeed !
Interesting point. His lagging behind the beat implies him slowly unearthing the memories of his past.
The Most Mellow Voice Ever. Saw him live in the late 60's and again early 70's. Phenomenal voice and performer.

Try to remember the kind of September
When life was slow and oh so mellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When grass was green and grain was yellow
Try to remember the kind of September
When you were a tender and callow fellow
Try to remember and if you remember then follow
Follow
Try to remember when life was so tender
When noone wept except the willow
Try to remember when life was so tender
When dreams were kept beside your pillow
Try to remember when life was so tender
When love was an ember about to billow
Try to remember and if you remember then follow
Follow
Deep in December it's nice to remember
Although you know the snow will follow
Deep in December it's nice to remember
Without a hurt the heart will hollow
Deep in December
It's nice to remember
The fire of September that made you mellow
Deep in December our hearts should remember and follow
