  • Film with images of Apeldoorn during the liberation in 1945, of the period afterwards and of the liberation celebrations in 1946. The film was made by the Nederlandsche Smalfilmliga department Apeldoorn.
The film starts with images of April 17, 1945, the day of the liberation by the Canadian 1st Division. Soldiers pass with rifles at the ready. The flag on Langeweg 6, probably the parental home of the maker, goes out. Canadian soldiers, with the help of civilians from Apeldoorn, are building a Bailey Bridge on the site of the destroyed Deventer Bridge in Deventerstraat over the Apeldoorns Canal. Images of passing vehicles follow. Tanks and soldiers drive through the city, including on the lawn in front of Paleis Het Loo. Collaborators are arrested. Images follow after the liberation, including bagpipers in kilts of the Canadian army and Canadian soldiers bivouacking in Apeldoorn. Noteworthy are a number of partially staged sequences of a man digging up money in the garden and a man digging up a radio in a chest in an orchard. The rest of the film shows images of festivities and parades.
The film contains images of the arrival of Princess Juliana at Paleis Het Loo. Possibly these are images made on 24 July 1945 when she went by plane from England, via Teuge airport, to the palace to visit Queen Wilhelmina. The film contains a shot of Queen Wilhelmina driving down the street in an open car. The images of the festivities that follow may refer to the liberation celebrations in 1946. Bands, scouts and walking associations march in procession through the streets. Groups of men, women and children and horse and carriages with tableaux vivants pass by.

What shocks me is how thin the children were in the parade at the end of the film.. 1945 was a hard year for the Dutch, at least until liberation..

Germany starved them for 4 years before the Canadians showed up and ran them off.. then we bombed the Netherlands with all the food we could find. 👍✌🇨🇦
