I lived in Oosterbeek for a time in the mid 1970’s and met numerous veterans who visited the battlefield. Later I moved to North Wales very near to where Freddie was living, and had the pleasure of chatting to him on many occasions. He was a true gentleman, a quiet hero of a bygone era, where honour, loyalty and respect were values of the day. I’m humbled to have known him. I will be returning to Arnhem this September to honour the memory of all those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Sadly, their sacrifices have been “Sold down the river” by recent governments. LEST WE FORGET. 🌹
'They deserved better in the planning.'
Wow. How perfectly, and modestly, was that put?
These are my childhood heroes growing up in the 80s with these war films. The men that made me the man I am today. 👍 proud and thank full to be British
Passed away on Thursday 30th July 2020. RIP.
Irony, my birthday, Walked across the John Frost Bridge few years back just to pay my respects. Lots of musems and memorials to the forces there in Arnhem. To the Boys.
My Uncle was at Arnhem. He was a sniper. Before he was captured by the Germans he quickly through his sniper Rifle in a river. His name was Tom Allison from Ayrshire.
Brave men let down by the men above them ,where have we heard that before. The regiment was virtually wiped out The bravest of the brave.
Looks like a badass
He must have been in his 90s when the interview was done!
But, Is the veteran or you going to speak? Stop to speak over him, will you?
