- The cruelty and calculation of her crimes were "truly horrific", the judge at Manchester Crown Court declared today as he sentenced Lucy Letby to a whole-life term in jail for murdering seven babies and attempting to murder six others.

Letby had refused to come to court to hear families of her victims describe the impact of her crimes: one man broke down in tears as he said the loss of his two children had destroyed him as a man and as a father.

My daughter was born at Liverpool Women's in December 2012 when Letby was working there! She needed treatment for jaundice and an eye issue. Makes my blood run cold knowing that monster could have had her hands on my baby. I can only imagine the victims parents horror.
Let this be a lesson. Not all medical professionals are saints, not all scientists aren't corrupt, not all politicians are on your side

It's a salutary reminder that evil walks among us. It doesn't have cloven hooves, horns or smell of brimstone. Instead, it looks normal and behaves like anyone else for 95% of its existence then, for 5% of it, finds the absolute depths of depravity. This woman is evil, and she serves as a reminder to always be watchful.
As evil goes she is but a foot note, good old Harold Shipman killed 108 people before he was caught and there wasn’t half the fuss when he was sent down except commiserations from the authorities that he managed to kill 108 people first!

It s no comparison but I had the misfortune to spend several weeks and also a month in hospital recently for what was a life saving emergency surgery . Amongst the wonderful care and great professionalism I received I also experienced a life threatening carelessness, many occasions of real callousness and insults as well,as staff pretending not to notice things that were very disturbing . I could relate many many occasions of casual indifference , ignoring patients , leaving them in distress for long periods , laughing at some , wrong meds given to wrong patients and far far worse life endangering acts that were then glossed over. I am rightly proud of our NHS and most of the staff who work there , many have a real vocation and care deeply but many also are there only for a wage or some other motive . My own mother was a nurse on a children’s ward in the 1960/70s s d cared later for the elderly , but my being there opened my eyes to whymany say they fear going back to hospital . A lot goes on there that the public are unaware of and if they did would be deeply shocked . These awful and tragic events highlight once again how hospitals have very dark practices that need addressing .. but we’ve heard the same things before and too often haven’t we .

It blows my mind that the guilty party can simply choose not to attend their own sentencing. She should have been dragged into that court room, gagged if necessary, and compelled to listen to the sentence whilst the families watched on.
Allowing her the option of not attending robs the families of even that small measure of satisfaction, the simple opportunity to see justice done.

Statistically - with number of deaths or near death incidents in 18 month spell all aligning with her shift patterns- there really isn’t much doubt. She also kept paperwork of the poor babies she killed…

How about those who deliberately ignored repeated complaints about her? Why are they not brought before courts. This is corporate manslaughter. All those executives and senior managers should also be made an example.
One of the problem NHS faces is that it’s run by MBA executives who know nothing about medicine and medical ethics. They run hospitals as if these are some kind of manufacturing industry. They are more interested in achieving their business oriented day to day targets , instead of working for patient welfare. I fail to understand How could one ignore repeated complaints made by senior consultants?
In my opinion These senior executives and managers are as much responsible for this tragedy as the killer.
I didn’t know they could refuse to attend. That shouldn’t be a choice. They should have to listen to the judges verdict. They should have to face families and friends of those they harmed.
Look if you’re going to face a full life prison sentence why the heck would you as an individual subject yourself to the scorn of those you harmed there’s nothing to gain in the situation and to force someone against their will is only going to end poorly.

The thing what angers me the most is the incompetence and cover ups and the fact this person got to finesse the system into being a victim and using employment law to her advantage. Saying she was bullied and they targeted her even though so many consultants raised alarm bells.
on this occasion, and due to the severe nature of this case, i think it should be possible that some of the directors should also face criminal charges for neglect or duty of care. Since the NHS is a public body, then it is accountable to the public and should therefore face public criminal charges, a nice lengthy prison sentence for all directors and CEO.

How do you all know for certain that this isn't another miscarriage of justice?? Why did babies die before and after she worked on the ward?
The death rate increased by 400% during the time she worked there, and the deaths followed her when she moved from night to day shifts. Since she was moved from the unit, some years ago, only 1 baby has died on the unit. She’s literally the only factor involved in all the deaths.

Today entire subreddits are dedicated just to Lucy Letby, with thousands of users logging minutes from the trial, evidence, witness statements and police reports. Of course the miscarriage is always a possibility, but the chances of that are slim. Say, less than 2% and by miscarriage we could also mean something like "she did kill 7 babies but she was mentally unstable so she should get 35 years instead of life". Possible sure, but statistically insignificant.

I also want to know why the trust had the right to override the doctors wishes on Letby. If consultants have concerns, they should be listened to. If they had, it wouldn’t have gone so far.

I’m watching from America. Don’t quote me but I believe criminals here are required to hear from the victims loved ones if they choose to speak. How did this go on for so long without something being done. Doctors were suspicious yet nothing was done. This should not be happening. Unfortunately this is not the first case like this and sadly it won’t be the last; lessons have not been learnt. The poor parents were in court hearing what this evil person did, yet she was allowed to choose not to attend court for her sentencing. This is so wrong. My daughter was in NICU full term but exceptionally bad case of congenital pneumonia she was very sick, I am fortunate here in Scotland the nurses were angels and nursed my baby back to health who is now 14 years old happy and healthy. My heart shatters for these parents to relive this and to know ultimately know that their child could have been alive and well today. By grace of god I couldn’t have stood there I’d have wanted to get to her, the most powerless feeling in the world is having to entrust your baby l, your heart to another to nurture it’s just a feeling you cannot explain. I’ll never feel a fraction of what these parents have but this evil spawn of satan should be thrown in general population she’s the lowest of the low and she will suffer for it I promise someone will get to her. I cannot wait

Even for cases that are entirely circumstantial evidence? No dna? No cctv? No eye witnesses? No motive? No previous? No character witness statements? You'd be happy for that standard to be applied to you?

I agree with Antoinette Sandbach. This is passed the point of a public inquiry - particularly one with no teeth and no powers. It'd be a political exercise, a waste of millions of pounds, and would do absolutely nothing to protect anyone. A police inquiry, which can actually bring charges against people for their utter incompetence and cowardice, is the only way anything will change.
These terrible managers exist in every Trust. Let's see how quickly they stop being lazy and start doing their job once they realise that "sweeping it under the rug" isn't a PR exercise, but a crime that will put them in prison.

I cannot tell you how much I agree with that statement. I have seen the utter incompetence of NHS managers, that do not even have the essential qualifications and training to become managers in the first place. I have seen how whistleblowers are treated and basically bullied into resigning. I have seen investigations covering up everything and people responsible casually being moved to other positions. It's wrong and it's not spoken about.
@@marination3271 Well said, and thank you for providing some excellent examples. I've seen very similar (read: pretty much carbon copy) incidents in 3 separate Trusts. It's a national problem that needs addressing with genuine power, by people with a will to change a very ingrained and stubborn system for the better.
@@t-and-punfortunately, it will not happen, unless things change on a governmental level. I have personally started a whole internal investigation while also informing the CQC, with the University that my Trust was partnered with having deemed the service unsafe for trainees. You know what happened? NOTHING. People were moved, in the middle of investigations. I have been threatened publicly and nothing happened. Managers were promoted without an ounce of competence, in fact, there were promoted BECAUSE they were incompetent and they would also cover up for the mess as. Promoting competent people would result in unwanted questioning. I ended up resigning, but I am thinking of suing now, with the support of a few colleagues. I will never work in the NHS again. It honestly just attracts incompetence and laziness.
@@marination3271 I agree - the depth you have mentioned and the widespread nature of the issue that I have seen shows that it needs people with a lot of power to change it.
I do think that a police investigation would be a good start, though, because it would highlight the need for change to those who haven't seen what we have seen. The Letby case has shocked the nation and is demanding publicity. If it is shown that it could have happened anywhere, that might be enough to make the public demand change.
As the NHS is largely considered untouchable, it is an uphill battle and we have to be careful to not allow those who seek to gain from privatising it to exploit these problems for personal gain, as they won't actually fix anything along the way. However, if the police said (particularly in the run-up to an election) "look, there's widespread incompetence and negligence - Letby could happen again anywhere" then I think that whoever had a solid plan to fix it would win that election - especially with the voting power of the vast majority of NHS employees (one of the world's largest employers, and the vast majority of employees are good people). But we have to force them to push through change. If we don't fight for the NHS, we'll lose it - whether to privatisation, or poor management and incompetence.
If there is no statute of limitations dictating your ability to sue, please consider fighting strategically. If you time it right, you could maximise the pressure on your Trust (utilising all those aforementioned factors) to help bring about real change.

Why wasn’t she forced to come into the Court and hear the verdict and sentence . Surely she should have had to for justice to be “ Seen and heard to be done “ . For the families to see her receiving the sentence is important for them to have some sense of justice no matter how small that justice may be . For her to refuse to arpttend is a contempt for them and the verdict and seems to show her total self absorption.

Mental illness is not an excuse. We convict the mentally ill all the time. The deciding factor is whether they know what they were doing was wrong and the potential consequences.

yeah... they were. Lots of accusations were thrown on her by other colleagues. For 6 months there were emails back and forth informing the management that the common link between all the deaths, was Lucy. The management forced them to write an apology letter to her before putting her back on the job. She then proceeded to kill 2 more babies

The arrogance of authority is clear when we learn the way parents were and are treated by those who have the authority of knowledge and qualifications . We see it too often how a uniform or title can let those believe that those without are somehow lesser than them . To be treated so callously when one is in terrible pain is deeply shocking but to seek to cover up things done by those with authority and care of others is almost as cruel and callou as it can be .
We learn of such callous acts by hospital doctors admin and executives far too many times and it keeps occurring . Their cold self Interest has been the cause of deaths .they’re not just negligent it was a deliberate and contrived act to cover up what was happening , to call it negligence is to hint at it being accidental somehow .
She should have been made to face the poor families who have suffered and continue to suffer because of her cruelty.I cannot fathom why she did it.😢😢😢😢

Its extremely rare for a baby to be murdered by a professional, usually its the mum or dad or step parent but when this happens it's sickening.

It should be illegal for them to not be present for the sentencing phase and impact statements. Making her listen to the sentencing in front of the families might be the closest thing the victims might ever get to having closure. What a coward.
I wish she could have all the victim impact statements played via loudspeaker into her cell on a continuous loop until she admits her guilt and gives the families the remorse and answers they deserve, however long that takes.

Worse part is that she’s living in such comfortable jail cell for murdering *7* babies… it’s likely she’s killed much more than 7 babies and yet her sentence for committing crimes against humanity is life which we’ll have to pay tax for. It’s people like this that is exactly why we need cruel harsh punishments and the death penalty. 1 or a handful of poor individuals for committing a crime they didn’t commit shouldn’t have ever been abolished for the rest of truly vile people.
She has been a "nurse" for 12 years..I hate to think what else she may have done during that time..

Wrongfully killing even 1 person for a crime that didn’t commit rules out the death penalty in my books. Plus, enacting the death penalty isn’t any less expensive than confining someone to life in prison anyway.
@@deanlowdon8381 well in my eyes, exception(s) shouldn’t abolish such laws even though it is unfortunate for those exceptions. Human nature is that they want true justice, any parent would, more severe than just life imprisonment.
As for the cost, it doesn’t have to be like how it is in america where it’s overly complicated. There are still parts of the world that do it for far less in price & time since americans have to pay tax for these kinds of people before being put to death for things like food, water, entertainment (if given), electricity (for lights or whatever) for a set period of years then eventual execution of electric chair (if they even still do that) or lethal injection.
@@PlayingUnfairly Wonder if you’d still say that if you, or someone you cared about, was sentenced to be killed for a crime they didn’t commit? We literally saw just a couple of weeks ago with that guy being released after wrongfully spending 17 years in jail that the justice system is far from infallible.
As for the cost, don’t you want to be pretty damn certain that you’ve got the right person before you kill them? If the answer is yes, that’s going to be expensive with appeals, retrials etc etc. What country would you hold up as a great example of how to use the death penalty?

She should have been dragged into the courtroom to hear the sentencing. To allow the families of the babies she murdered to witness her sentencing and for her to feel their utter sadness that she, as a trusted professional of the medical community, should have killed their children! She should have been made to be in that courtroom!

Our British justice system is a joke, how can a criminal decide not to come to court for sentence it should not be allowed. They will be telling the judges what sentence they want for their crime. Nonsence.

Mark McDonald Barrister could demand a Retrial to expose both Health Authority coverup and Medical Clinical Notes to prove that Lucy Letby were not what the judge said and cut Lucy Letby "whole life" as manslaughter. It is unreasonable to wholly blame Lucy Letby for all 15 "alleged murder", difficult for common sense to accept.
I don’t know how the prison system is in the UK but in the USA between the other inmates who suffered child abuse and prison guards that woman, Lucy, wouldn’t last three months without herself having her life taken.

This is a rarity in the UK...Extremely common in America, without being a serial killer.
As an aside, I still think whole life tariffs are essentially torture, but it's not great that this would apply to a case like this. But I stand by my view, particularly in the case of a 33 year old. That's at least half a century.

A white woman got lethal amounts of the benefit of the doubt and the media shows pictures of her smiling and being involved in good things. If this was anybody else, all you would hear is about their race, nationality or gender identity.

Murdering innocent children is something that will never be forgiven. She robbed love from their families and she robbed potential from the world. I had a little baby girl two years ago almost now, I remember being so worried about her birth being safe. My heart truly goes out to anyone who suffers these atrocities in life. It is unbelievably cruel. Can't help but be filled with so much emotion, I'm so sorry that evil exists.

Working in care, Safeguarding has and will always be the most important information to share any concerns against any carers that may harm or course any patients harm, and it breaks my heart that they were not heard…. Which may have lead to babies being saved today… ❣️

Is it possible that the hospital Managers didn’t call the Police because they KNEW that there was the same number of deaths BEFORE LucyLetby’s time there & that the WHOLE Dept was incompetent? LucyLetby was only in her early 20’s and would mimick dangerous practices if they were the “Norm”. And imo, NO one in their early or mid 20’s should be left managing a ventilated newborn with complications - they simply do NOT HAVE THE EXPERIENCE. Consultant Paediatric Anaesthetists struggle with these airways compared to the older children’s airways. And even if LucyLetby intentionally injected insulin in order say to show case her resuscitation skills- does that prove an intention to murder? No it doesn’t. She could have written “I killed them on purpose” because she injected them with insulin on purpose & that killed them. I’m just saying that several doctors & nurses there could be toxic & dangerous & could she have picked up that this is OK? I don’t think that the murder investigation should have been limited to looking just at HER patients. Data should have been published on ALL DEATHS around, before & after the time she was there. Maybe the place is STILL AS DANGEROUS AS EVER & the NEXT 23 year old is going to learn the SAME DANGEROUS CONDUCT because potentially numerous doctors & nurses there are dangerous.

I agree with you. I’m not in a position to comment about whether she is guilty or not… but something still doesn’t add up. There is a website where someone in the USA. Not sure if they have a legal background but seems like it - say that it would have been thrown out of court there because the scientific evidence wouldn’t stand up in court….

No. The death rate was 400% higher when she was working in the unit. The deaths only occurred when she was on duty, and followed her when she was transferred from night to day duties. All deaths during her time were investigated, and now every child she came into contact with will be investigated by Greater Manchester police, and that comes to literally thousands.

Unpopular opinion.....there's a criminal barrister, I forget his name, but there's an interview with him on here couple days ago....
...what he said is equally as shocking as the case itself.....he says these cases are frought with historicaly wrongly convicted people, all cases are nearly carbon copies of each other.....where hardly any physical evidence at all is present....I didn't really want to take it in out of rage hate for Letby obv, but watching more he went onto name names upon names of nurses convicted in the same manner who years later were found to have done nothing at all....provokes thought if nothing else.
And it’s certainly a very strong argument against the death penalty…
Maybe unpopular but I think you hit the nail on the head. One of the hypotheses submitted by the prosecution alleges that she injected air into a couple of the babies veins, however there was no physical evidence of puncture marks submitted. The defence witnesses confirmed that some of the other hypotheses presented could have been explained in several other ways too... Prosecution barristers know that emotions coupled with simple jurors will get them the conviction, even if it is unsafe. If she is guilty then she deserves to be in prison for her crimes, but I am not convinced her guilt has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt.
Let’s say she’s the fall guy…. It explains her refusal to attend a dummy court for already decided sentencing.

Those two managers made the consultants apologise to her. These managers got to those places by pushing back the competition, they are tough and bad. They deserve at least 25 years of prison and all their properties should be auctioned and give the money to the victims families
