Another pro tip, when you are driving your vehicle, try adjusting your rearview mirror up slightly to help remind you to sit up straight.
Actually kinda a good idea
I do that too :)
why would i be playing guitar while driving you are a silly man
Wow! Cool!
@@Gwyn1stborn lol
'Head over heart, heart over hips' also doubles as a pretty decent life philosophy
Very much so actually XD
Im led to believe on the contrary that heart is more reliable than head
Dan Urech nope
But what does "reliable" even mean here?
Haha both funny and true!
Brandon says relax - relax harder than you've ever relaxed before.
HA!
yes, extreme relaxation.
I play slouched over, head down with a cigarette in my mouth with a bottle of neat whisky next to me like all good blues artist... I haven't got time for oxygen and a healthy liver
Please, man, play us a painful song from Hell (or Hospital). Just kidding around, obviously… LOL
ok dud
*If I wanted to be sober, I wouldn't have gotten drunk!*
If you're passionate about guitar and love playing it, smoking and drinking is a stupid thing to do. It's a stupid thing in general. But you're just reducing the years of your life which you could've spent playing guitar, performing and just enjoying life.

I am so impressed by your videos quality, the background music, and the tempo of your speech, the volume, great job , and thank you for these great tips
Thank you!
What bpm is he speaking at
Watching your videos during a worldwide pandemic is truly a blessing Brandon. I started watching them to become a better guitar player and soon realized that they are also good for reducing stress and anxiety. The title of this one should be How To Improve Your Posture And Stay Calm. Thank you for ALL your great videos Brandon!
On another video you told us about some 400 years scrolls of music that you played or was working with, how about videos about those scrolls, where they where found, who wrote them etc, and then you play the music for us? I think plenty of us would love it!
YES! I concur.
Your videos always make me want to pick my guitar up and start playing❤️
I don't get it how this doesn't have millions of views yet...
This is by far the best guitar posture tutorial I have ever seen on RUclips, I'm not kidding!
Thank you so much for all that advice. I'm certain this will have a great influence on my journey as a classical guitarist :)
Really great tips the more I play i realize its the little subtle things that make your performance so much better thank you
I find myself coming back to this video quite often, for both myself and my students! Thank you for doing this video!
Idk what it is, the mic or something else, but his voice always sounds like he's low key atempting an asmr video.
I think this dude is just more chill than you or i have ever been in our lives
You are a gift to humanity.
You have great focus, Brandon. Really awesome teacher and player.
Because of my neck pain, looking down fret thank you Brother
If you change the shutter speed on your camera you can eliminate the flickering from that LED light behind you. Thanks for all your terrific videos. Your talent amazes and inspires me.
Thanks! it helped a lot with my back pain after long sessions
"Head over heart..." like it, may well "borrow" it for my own students 🙂
As a teacher of the Alexander Technique my advice is to stand on your bottom! Joking aside, sitting and standing are essentially the same thing for the torso. You can read more about it here:
www.alexander-technique.london/2015/01/08/stand-on-your-bottom-what-the-truth-about-sitting/
The main problem is that people sit badly the moment the think of sitting down as it's unconsciously associated with collapsing towards a lower surface, so they arrive on the chair pre-collapsed. It can be helpful to not think of sitting down at all, but going into a squat and failing halfway down because the chair has got in the way. It changes the behaviour in what is obviously the same activity.
If anyone is interested I've just started a new Facebook page which combines my experience as an Alexander Technique teacher with being a guitar player:
facebook.com/TheEmbodiedGuitarist/
This seems like it could make me tense, or it could be just what i need. I even have trouble relaxing when i lie down, but it's the same concept. It's all about how you perceive things
I've been playing guitar for over 40 years and I have a habit of neglecting my posture. After watching this video I decided to make a conscious effort to focus on good posture and I immediately noticed an improvement in my playing. Thanks for tips!
Fantastic video!! You helped me and also gave me few ideas how to easily tell my students how to hold guitar... In my case Guitarlift saved my back, as I also have longer torso than legs + I am a bit overweight... So big recommendation for guitarlift, it seems a bit expensive at first but it is 300% worth it and it is mind-blowingly secure, basically becomes part of guitar
Awesome tips ! You're probably the best classical guitar online teacher I've seen over the last 6 years I've been playing . Thanks for your precious help
Great tips also for general appropriate posture 🙏
Awesome video! I really love the high quality editing and obvious effort put into your explanations and filming.
One note for anyone out there with serious slouching issues (as a person who’s recovered from exceptionally bad posture). Go see a physical therapist, especially if your career revolves around sitting. Bad posture is the result of poor habits as well as weak supportive muscles. It takes an expert to help identify which muscles are weak and teach you how to strengthen them.
Every time I visit Brandon's channel his subscriber count has grown by the thousands, congratulations! Been listening for years.
You are great guitar player end great human
Please make more, fabulous!
Thank you for doing these tips, they're very informative!
You are an absolutely fantastic teacher!
Very good!! Thanks!! 💜
Thank you Brandon.
Great tips! Waiting for more!
On the way!
Guitar ergonomics, what a time to be alive
Such a great video ! Thank you !
excellent advice! thank you!
Excellent, thanks very much for this tutorial! I was pretty much just an occasional strummer, but now getting more into slack key where fingerstyle much more important. In general I think many of us have a terrible posture. As a dentist this is amplified 100x's and carries over to everything we do, including (attempting) to play guitar. These instructions will help immensely, now I'm off to yoga. OK only kidding, but that would help as well lol!
I don’t even know how to play an instrument. But I will watch every single video you post!
You are excellent! Thank!!
Please do Flamenco vs Classical guitar
it was very informative, thank you
I've been playing guitar for hours every day recently and my posture is terrible, thank you so much for this! :)
very helpful, thanks. I find my lower back gets sore very quickly and i am craning my head to look at the fretboard!
Awesome! Thanks so much!
You are an expert
Can you also make a video or tip about the nails of your right hand?
Good info here. It helped me a lot.
I like to almost lay down completly in the couch when playing guitar. It looks cool and feels just great.
4:02. I am curious... What is that running gag with Stairway to Heaven? Sure, it is rock and (for the iconic parts) not overly complicated. But it is quite beautiful and even top notch classical players will play simple off-genre pieces from time to time. So: Whence comes this aversion? Observed it thrice so far in the vicinity of Brandon and Rob Scallon.
This video in itself is a mindfulness session :)
Thank you maestro!
Most people will try improving their posture cuz of their appearance, health,...etc
Brandon is doing that to play music better.
Awesome video .. I use the footstool for both foot , hehe ..
Need to back to the flamenco style
We see great performers doing it and we 'feel free' to do, but definitely it's not good
Thanks! If you need a footstool on both feet, it means your chair is too high. Try a lower chair
Great tips, under valued topic of great importance!
Excellent! really good and simple video, well done.
My biggest problem with the classical guitar has always been the contact between my right arm and the corner of the guitars body. Maybe i'm too tense when playing and i squeeze the guitar too much, but i always end up with red lines all over my forearm..
Gracias desde Ciudad de México, tu Inglés lo pronuncias muy adecuado y se entiende todo muy bien, gracias por los consejos muy útiles.
Yea... still trying to find out how to sit with my nylon string. Hoping this video cures me!
Thanks so much for tips
I've suffered from poor posture for more years than I care to remember. It can completely ruin your playing (of any instrument). I became so far 'out of alignment' that playing guitar led to numbness in both hands - obviously a nerve issue in the upper back. It lasted months! even after I'd put away the guitar. One exercise that does seem to help is 'wall angels' (youtube them) but don't expect immediate results. Do them for a few minutes several times per day - perhaps less at the beginning.
Hi Brandon, nice tips.
I play steel string acoustics and am a tall person (6'1) with a lengthy arm. You'd think I'd have no concerns playing a dreadnought in the folk / casual position, but being a bit of a health nut I'm concerned about shoulder and spine issues as I get older (no chronic issues now).
I've been researching this topic a lot and was wondering if I should just use the classical position even though I don't play classical music. It seems like the more ergonomical choice between the two regardless of style. Any thoughts?
hi! i'm a bit late but i think you can use whichever playing position is most comfortable for you. the only problem i would see for acoustic music and the classical position is strumming, but i don't think it would be a critical problem!
Basic guitar stuff. At least seems basic. I wish I had known the seemingly simple things you have in your videos. Thank you.
Thank you for this helpful video. I really struggle with my position when I am trying to practice. I will try your suggestions and also I will try to use ergoplay to see if it is more comfortable for me
#1:10 how truth it is what you said about breathing and generally to be relax while playing!!!
Poor posture is a terrible habit I have been having difficulty breaking. I am completely self taught with no direct instructors,I have been able to improve my fretting and right hand technique, but posture is one I still struggle with!
man I wish you do tutorials you have an amazing video playing nocturne by chopin that I wish I could play
The only thing I can say is... thanks!!! :)
I definitely do the "Turtle Thing" when working on cars, but now I am self conscious about my playing posture👀
I think I'm guilty of at least 98% of those bad posture habits. YIKES!!! I've got some work to do!!! Thanks Brandon! LOL!!!
is there something like the ergo play for electric guitar? would those suction cups work on something like a strat? I'd like to sit better when I practice at home and avoid to use a guitar strap that puts weight on my neck/shoulders...thanks!
I've been thinking about this lately because I simply can't play the acoustic guitar in the position that I see most commonly the horizontal way, I simply strain my wrist and can't get the picking to make sense. I sit with it much more like a classical guitarist, but I always feel like the guitar wants to go everywhere and isn't that comfortable because it's quite low.
I'm gonna take a look at the ergo play seems like it might fix some struggles.
If you're thinking "you don't strain your wrist by the horizontal playing position", sure I guess most people don't, I don't really know, what I do know is I broke my arm close to the wrist years ago, and it didn't grow back straight, I luckily didn't lose anything, however I just can't turn my wrist flat, it's like my limits of movement are turned like 5-10 degrees and thus it's problematic playing the guitar with a horizontal neck position.
Thanks for the tips! Im trying to improve but progress is slow. Its hard because im not a great player and i need to see where i put my fingers on the ukulele or it goes wrong haha
Trust your fingers. Go slow. Gradually they will build muscle memory of where the notes are and you won't need to do the turtle ;)
What would you suggest for female classical guitar player? They have a bit different body structures and it’s hard to “rest back against the chest” position many times. Thank you so much in advance!
I always wonder if a classical guitar with the upper bout wider than the lower bout so it would be angled up naturally on a flat lap would be an improvement
i did it wrong way too long.. well now I'm practicing with a foot table tho.
BTW: what to do when the song requires the 21st but my guitar has only 19th frets on the first string
Yeah right tell that to the big beast of Ricardo Gallen.
Hi Brandon, can you ue the Ergoplay support in a lute?
You know what brandon, I have just a single thing to say is you are so sweet!!!
thank you teacher .. I hope one day you will teach me the intro of estas tonne song Internal Flight ..
question : how about someone like me at 40 years old with bad posture ? my shoulders are painful always if I try to stay like y advised us.. thank you 1000 times .
best regards from Algeria
A good tip for better technique and posture is holding the guitar at a 45 degree angle away from you. (If you're playing on your right leg)
The Picasso comment cracked me up
I got pain in my upper back from playeing in the classical position with the elevated foot. Im 6.3 with a 6.6 wingspan and im afraid i wont be able to reach a high level of guitar playeing due to injury. Does annybody know if the ergoplay will help a big guy like me with long arms? I have to rotate my upper torso to square up the guitar to my chest. Thanks
Once strained my muscles due to bad posture, Couldn't move for.6 months..
Hi, Brandon. What's the name of the piece you're playing at 00:10? Thanks for your tips!

El Columpio by Tárrega
“Just don’t play stairway to heaven” made me crack out of laughter 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
You called me a turtle!
Actually, I think you just outed yourself as a turtle ;)
I have a question: when you sit with the classical guitar at 45 degree angle and leaning against your chest, do you keep the guitar head pointing a little bit forward (away from your body), pointing a little bit backwards (closer to your body) or you just simply keep the guitar parallel to your chest?
that torso tho
That guitar tho
thanks a lot for the great tips, i just discovered your channel and really enjoy both your technique and your interpretations.
On the topic of this video, as a rather short female guitarist (with generous breast), the tilt has always been the most complicated part of posturefor me. I personnaly always enjoyed a rather high foot stool, could never really get used to the device you prefer (sorry, not an english speaker, forgot its name). As a female classical guitarist, it has always been quite frustrating that most male professors don't understand posture for a woman is slightely different... Thanks a lot again anyway, a relaxed posture and good breathing is definitely the key !
Wow. 👍👍👍👍👍
I tend to cross my left leg over my right, any suggestions for better posture?
Head over heart, heart over hips
Good for guitar
Good for relationships
im going to get it tattooed hahahahaha one of the best and shortest tips i've learnt
Hahaha this is a new intepretation I am totally on board with.
@@victor.godinez please pay royalty fee to Brandon :)
Thank you Brandon
This wasn't a tip. That was the equivalent of half a year's worth of beginner lessons on posture and positioning for classically trained musicians. At least, that's how it is for violinists. Thank you.
The Hunchback of Notre-Dame gave that 1 dislike.
Guitarists who don't sit...checkmate
Epico
There's even a posture that makes playing easier while standing. Checkmate indeed.
i would like this comment but its at 69 and so i dont want to
@@LostSoulAscension what posture ?
@@metafull depressed shoulders, head, heart and pelvis aligned, neutral or to slightly retracted scapulas to avoid crippling rounding of the back that will lead to even more tension in the arms and hands. Upright posture without a forward craning neck allows the shoulders to completely relax. Sorry for the sporadic description, but those are all factors in standing as much as sitting. As well as feet on the ground for grounded feet to hip stability which travels all the way through the core, up the back to the shoulders. Everything is connected, so it's impossible to say that there isn't also more efficient ways of standing relaxed, as well as in sitting positions.
Dude gives a whole lesson and calls them tips.
lmao true, check his tremolo tutorial.

"hey everyone"
Hello suspiciously disarming smile man.
This is the best tip any guitar player can give. Not just for comfort, but for the overall performance. Even before any technical guitar stuff, this is on point! Thank you😊
1:39 Head Over Heart and Heart Over Hips
5:26 Guitar Position
6:19 Guitar Support Rest
6:50 Guitar Angle
7:11 Guitar Tilt
7:43 Both Feet Flat
8:11 Don't Look at Fret Board
9:19 Keep Head Straight
Tnx man❤
I am so guilty of doing the turtle, it's why I have started to play my guitars standing up. I usually practice vocals and guitars at the same time as for the past couple of months and I have noticed it has made me not only a way better singer but also a better guitarist in the process. I however am one of those "Metal" blasphemers who stands in a power stance with my Flying V on about crotch height so...
Just mix it with some practice while sitting or it will take it's toll on your hips, trust me
I’m studing a brazilian instrument: the “viola caipira”. And, dude... not kidding: your tips not just improved my posture but also my playing.
Thanks a lot from Brazil!
