Are Rewards More Dangerous than Punishments? (In Gaming)

- We'll be looking at examples of operant conditioning, specifically punishment, through various games, before I share a design on the topic from my Stema Project.
Thank you to @FCPlaythroughs and @longplayarchive for the gameplay footage

I think a really neat idea would be a game where all the enemies level up and have a levelling system, but you don’t level up, so it forces the player to employ skill and strategy.
Basically the risk of rain franchise?
U still collect items and level up in that game @@liber2350
Some people have done hacked Pokémon challenges with that gimmick. They seem fun
@@liber2350never played it, might check it out though
Not technically what you said but mothlight is similar, enemies get stronger while you get better gear and attacks but can't level up.
I think something I've only noticed now, I believe n0Rtist creates his own music and uses instruments and leitmotifs from the games on-screen when he talks about them! That is SO much effort that I haven't even been acknowledging so far! I might just be dumb though...
I can't believe the thumbnail of this video predicted Pokémon ZA!
That positive reinforcement Stemon definitely reinforces my hype for your project.
Love how hopes and dreams is weaved into your own background music when you start talking about rpgs.
Variable ratios can still be a good thing in games. Like the power up you get every checkpoint in a roguelike, or drawing cards/rolling dice in rpgs
What is "good" here? Good for the devs in hooking the players with quick happiness? Or good for the player's happy-chemicals tolerance and demands in the long term?

Every game has randomness, it’s not all just being predatory and trying to suck away money. In minecraft if I shear a sheep, I know I will get wool but I don’t know how much. That is randomness, but no one is complaining that minecraft is bad because they got unlucky with shearing sheep.
is that the overwatch theme behind you talking about lootboxes? 😂😂
this is why i love this channel
the thumbnail is so genius
1:19 The transition from one song to another is executed really well here. Well done.
What makes me really look forward to playing this project is that with these videos you show how much you care about the genre and that you know the mechanics behind what makes a game generally fun to play!
If this does become an actual game I am definitely going to get it because this project is so interesting
Fear of Missing out on its own could make for an interesting conversation about the world of Game Design. Especially in the modern day.
You can even start to see it happening to the Pokemon series. Became well acustomed to the term "fear of missing out" just from the Pokemon Go community.
They encourage constant engagement with the games with constant events and time senstive activities. Not to mention the way Pokemon are cycled in and out of raids to try and encourage people to play in groups (and maybe even shell out some IRL dollars to get as many of the current big raid Pokemon before it gets replaced by something new.)
You can even see elements of FOMO leak into the most recent Pokemon games, with the various event themed raids and massive mass outbreaks they offer. They even started doing events both in DLC and non DLC areas. Which I could loosely see being used to try and get more people to buy the DLC. While not completely isolating non DLC players.
I just want to say I love Behavian’s forms they look so good (edit: what if behavian’s shiny were just swapped I think it could work)
Great video, from a Pokemon doubles competitive standpoint the reinforce ability and a choice item could be a really good item. I do understand that you aren't necessarily keeping the same items from Pokemon, it just stood out to me.
the most underrated channel on youtube. keep up the good work.
Omg my entire soul perked up when you used the LISA soundfont for your usual background music, thank you for giving me this gift.
All imma say is that thumbnail would go hard in a jailbroken 3ds theme
I like that you use minecraft many times! this makes everything even more understandable for me and, I think, for everyone!
This gave me a lot of insight, I love your videos and I can't wait to see this projects beta. I recently decided to start work on my own monster-tamer game and this video gave me the idea on how I can encourage players to use more diversity in mons from time to time while rewarding them for straying away from their usual team. In order for your mons to evolve, or "upgrade" they have to be put into this stasis of sort where you can't use them for a certain amount of expedition time (time playing in the rouge-like area) and you cannot remove them. So in order to fill up your team you need to give new mons a chance in the spotlight and train up several mons to switch in and out of.
Absolutely amazing video like always, I really enjoy learning about all the topics you go over and how you implement them because of how unique they are, thanks for making some of the best content out there , I reinforce you to continue with my humble like and comment to pump up those interactions and get the algorithm going!
Congrats on hitting 100k+ subscribers!
Congrats on 100K subs
Can’t wait to watch + glad notis are on 😊
Behavian in both of their forms are so pretty!
When I get the game, I'm using one!
These kinds of things are why battle passes and events should be replayable after the event or pass period is over, its dumb and casual players like me who rarely have time or the personal space to play games like genshin can't enjoy the events like planned or get something I want
Love the Stema Mon at the end!
The thumbnail was the eternal floette
This video is a great reward!
Wow love this one
FOMO is a terrifying force, I would know, I've fallen victim
Why did this video only get 13k views? That's unusual
8:23 peshino jumpscare in the creature collector video for today
I think it would be cool if your game could be used as a teaching tool for schools. I'd love to play STEMA in science class!
3:19 I think you got these backwards? Sheep do always drop wool when sheared, yes, but it's up to random chance when they regrow it - the point of shearing is that you're letting it live so you can get more later. And last time I looked, chickens literally have a hardcoded non-variable cooldown on their egg drops (although this might have been changed)
I've waited patiently, and lo and behold, an awesome video! Can't wait for the next one!
Wait a minute...
#Justice4Snappele
i love your content ❤
I want there to be an ability that's like Pickup but guaranteed to work after major battles and the item automatically goes into your inventory. Just farm post game E4 for infinite free Full Restores, Big Nuggets and Max Revives. Lol
Well I got Behavian Reinforce form’s Types right…
Congrats on the silver play button! Does that award count as a progressive interval positive reinforcement?
Idk what exactly it is and it could totally just be a me thing, but I had a negative gut reaction to Reinforce form Behavians design
I think it was the wings, they’re such a saturated colour compared to the rest of the design that my eyes are sucked into the blue.
Another thing that it could be is when I compare it to Punish form Behavian, it’s wings and body blend together, whereas Punish form Behavian has its red wings clearly separated by its black and white body
I don’t mean for this to come across as critical and have just a singles persons perspective, the majority may disagree, but I hope you find my honest feedback interesting if nothing else
Neat
nice
LETS GOOO
11:22 Me when free choice specs/band:
Positive reinforcement can also be dangerous for the game maker. I DM a DND campaign and want to give my players cool items and stuff, but I fear that they are getting way to chaotic and powerful. Ha ha
I'm a simple man: I see da nORtist upload, I click da nORtist upload. (also small question: is your name a combination of "artist" and NOR logic gate?)
It's a combination of 'No' and 'Artist'
And it eventually became n0Rtist
Cool bowser
The older designs couldn't be too cringe
When I first woke up and saw that thumbnail in combination with the title, I was very befuddled
Its how its used that makes rewards bad
Hi
Tf2!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Am I the only one who laughed when n0rtist showed genshin impact as he said some games force you to spend money
Are rewards more dangerous than punishments, I don't know, ask the opioid epidemic.
Can you do a ai voice cover Pokémon edition counting on Christmas
19.99 dollar Fortnite gift card
