got me 3 toasted rx1's for cheap and currently making a 04 rx1 with a 08 vector chassis. the vector was a long track but I tore off the extension and making a cruiser short track. installed a polaris edge skid with a polaris track with 1.25" inch lugs. also doing a overhaul on the doner engine. valves are being redone and swappin out banged up pistons for good ones. lots of good work to it and recently got 'er some braided flex pipes from Ontario. from the 4 machines, I was not able to use any of their flex pipes due to rust and corrosion. I'm not a certified plumber on these things but I am youtube taught 😬 and an avid yamaha wrencher. just wanted to share with you and all, from one yamaha guy to another. hoping you and all a great winter. cheers from a small town in Alaska 👊
not sure how super similar these apex machines are to my rx1's, but when I had mine hooked up before taredown, it did the same exact thing. the engine turns over but wouldn't fire up, all electronics working, cleaned carbs, but when I took a peak at the valves from the intake and exhaust, the intake valves were toast. more then half of them were bent and sounded just like that no goer. if that motor can turn over, could probly use some new intake valves. but that's just me 🤷♂️ good to share a little bit of discover when you're out of reach of a dealership and wanna save some bucks to have a certified fella tell you the same thing for triple the price for them to look at it.
My thing was I had all older 2stroke sleds and loved em I used to grass drag sleds and only ran 2 stroke ones and did very well but I moved to va and we don't get enough snow to have a sled anymore
Im on my 2nd Apex. My third 4 stroke Yamaha . I agree they can be a pain to work on but as you said in the begining that one has over 20k miles on it. Most 2 strokes will never see that kind of miles without several rebuilds. An annual oil and filter change is still easier than an engine overhaul on a 2 stroke anyday. Keep up the videos we all enjoy them !!
Yeah but 2 stroke motors are easy to work on and 2 stroke rebuild don't cost that much as a 4 stroke would cost and dont for get the weight on 4 strike motor . 4 stroke sleds way heavier and I dont want a sled sounds like a motorcycle
actually I did...there was nothing wrong with it! 🤦 someone was into it before and there was a few things disconnected and a fee things not hooked up. but I have had the engine fired up and running lol. the fella that owned the two sleds just wanted me to swap them so that's what I did without really digging into them first. 🍻
note that the flex pipes do NOT need to be removed to perform an engine removal or swap ... could have saved yourself the heart ache of breaking off the header bolts. Another shortcut is to leave the headlights on the frame and just remove the whole headlight frame with the lights in place. Great video though - this will surely be a help to many people.
Nice work, big job to change out but like you said, once you get stuff out of the way it's not that bad. I am doing my exhaust check this week on my 04 rx Warrior, loss of power and the doughnuts were jus done but could be a leak somewhere. Anyhow, great videos and nice Yamaha's. Hopefully my next upgrade is a fuel injected yamaha!
Hey Pete! Recently found your channel and just wanted to drop a comment and say thank you for the content. Loving what I'm seeing so far, learning a lot! I do have one question for ya about how you weld the nuts on the broken studs/bolts... do you sort of just aim for the center of the snapped bolt and hold the trigger until it fills up to the top of the nut? Or do you sort of weld in a circle? tried watching your hands real close and couldn't tell if you were moving or not
thank you! yeah I kind of do a bit of both when welding them on lol. I usually start by just hittin it in the middle first then work it around once it starts filling up 🍻

No disrespect intended Pete but, you like Yamaha over BRP cuz they are better design??? WOW!! I’m not a mechanic but I can pull my engine from my 2012 MXZ etec! I wouldn’t even want to touch that APEX! Again! Much respect for your mechanical skills from a neighbour not far east of you!!

yeah I'm a yamaha and arctic cat fella! my brother JP had a nitro and he liked it! I never rode it though so I can't really say much about the sled on how it felt but I mean the 1050 motor is a beast of an engine so power and reliability is off the charts as far as that goes!
@@rednecksdirtyhands thanks Pete, I’m thinking of getting a 08, for my 16 year old and I, we don’t get enough snow anymore to warrant a new sidwider like I’d like, and the Covid pricing in my area is like getting raped by a cactus 🌵
Hey Pete, Steve here, from up in Northern Alberta. Gotta question fir ya. My cat being a 1997 900 triple, mountain cat, with like sumthin like 2.5 inch lug track , if I cut those heights of track to about 1 inch , am I still good to give er at 3/4 and more, Thank you in advance for a reply.
I don't understand why you wouldn't have fixed the suspension on the sled with the engine that runs instead of the swap, seems like a lot of extra work, but "the customers always right" or so they say. Anyway "Nice One"!
when it broke, it wrecked the cast aluminum bulkhead on the sled so I would have had to tear both sleds right apart to switch the bulkheads so it made more sense just to swap the motors 🍻
hey brother, sub from AK tuning in with a late update, i got the rx1 project of mine running! the upgrade chassis is doing really good. i recently came across an apex myself and she needs a new body. i was wondering if you knew, or anybody tuning in, know if the apex can fit in a vector or venture chassis? would appreciate any input, from one yamaha guy to another 👊
good day and cheers to ya in AK 🍻 I'm not 100 percent sure but I think the apex motor will fit in the vector chassis just might have to fart around with some of the Nick Nak stuff to hook it all up but the motor mounts should be close to the same position. the vector motor sits a bit lower in the chassis than the apex motor cause the primary clutch is inline with the crankshaft on the vector motor whereas the apex has the offset gear reduction but with a bit of time in the shop, some help from friends and a couple cases of beer I'm sure ya can get it in there! 🍻
@rednecksdirtyhands much appreciated for the response! I've never dove into an apex before and so this really motivates me for the upcoming project. have a safe winter brother! cheers from Alaska 🙏👊
haha well by the third one I'm sure it would be much easier! 🤣 I just figured it looked like a bit more involved switching the bulk head then just swapping the motor so we decided just to do the re and re instead. cheers 🍻
