The big block Chevy 460 cubic inch Ls7 for the 65 super sport chevelle..

  • We tore down the big block Chevy Ls7 due to a clunk in the pan when turning the engine on its side on the engine stand to drain block… we got the oil pan off to find the oil pump pick up tube laying in the bottom of the smashed pan, so we decided to tear the rest of the engine down to make sure everything was ok and ran across a few issues, but now we know what we are dealing with and are going to but a home budget rebuild of this big block Chevy, it has 30 over trw forged pistons witch makes this a 460 cubic inch, it has cast iron Merlin rectangle square port heads that has been ported, Harlen sharp rockers the heavy duty thick push rods, the cam is a custom ground cam from reed, specs unknown… it’s a 4 bolt main block, so it’s a good foundation to do a budget build, we don’t know if it’s going in the 65 Malibu super sport yet due to its condition or if we’re going back to original era small block Chevy

    Hey Michigan. Wow, it's good that you noticed the pickup tube was broken before you ran the motor. You sure know your stuff, Buddy. Thanks for sharing.👍👍🍁

    The story behind the engine is very interesting. It'll be cool to see what else you can find out.

    From what I have found reed camshafts were a custom cam out of Atlanta and mostly used in dirt track racing

    You can measure the lift of the cam at the valve when you assemble the engine by performing the valve train geometry check. There is a ton of videos here on you tube on how to. its fairly simple and is almost mandated when assembling an engine of unknown parts, especially hen unknown pushrods lengths are being used. you need a dial caliper and a internet connection. Only lift can be determined but it appears that that cam has some healthy duration just looking at it.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад +1

      I have done that before with cams, and we know push rod lengths, but it would definitely be nice to know what lift the cam is for sure 👍

    I hope to see you put this big block together even if its not going in chevelle. Got some good stuff to make some big power. Im curious if the heads are the 320cc or the 345cc version of merlins and also curious about the camshaft too. I tried looking online at reeds old pdf catalog but nothing matched. Looking forward for whats next on this build.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад +1

      Hey thanks for looking on reeds site, like i said it’s a custom grind but I’m going to measure the lobes to at least get the lift, and according to what I found on line about the heads the rectangular port was the 345, and I guess grumpy Jenkins ran these heads on all his cars. I thought that was awesome 💪

    The only difference in a LS-6 and LS-7 is the compression ratio and the difference is the dome size of the pistons. I have been racing big blocks for over 50 years and one of the biggest problems I have encountered is the pickup tube on the stock type oil pumps. Apparently there is some type of harmonic vibrations that will cause the tube to crack or loosen and fall off. I take and weld a brace for the pickup tube.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад

      That’s not the first time I’ve seen this happen to big blocks, so I believe your correct on the stock pumps, I usually put the bolt on pickups on my rebuilds and that what This one will get also, thanks my friend 👍✌️

    Hey Herb,
    Looks like a good engine with good parts. Looks like you could ring and bearing it if needed and run it. I wouldn’t be to worried about the notches on the cylinder bore, it should be fine. It will be interesting to see what engine you go with,the big blocks definitely take a lot more fuel than the small blocks.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад

      That’s probably what I’m going to do, just do a budget build and put it back together, but still probably going Sbc just more practical for Jen to cruise with 💪✌️

      @@MMCGRACING Nooo Jen wants a Big Block Herb, just like her Dad wanted. That Chevelle wants it too. Do the right thing and put that engine in the car, it's what you want too I'm sure.

    I tried to read the numbers on your camshaft but can’t quite see good enough. Reed was a good camshaft company that went out of business but you can google the numbers on your cam and see exactly what it is. I think the J9358 may be the serial number and the other longer number should be the cam profile number.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад

      I’m in my 50s and never heard of reed lol , I guess there older than me, and I ran all the numbers and can not find anything, that’s why I think it’s a custom grind, I bet this setup was pretty stout when freash 💪

    That #4 cylinder looks like it has a sleeve installed and the valve relief was not cleaned up.

    • @MMCGRACING
      @MMCGRACING  6 месяцев назад

      That’s what I thought at first but when looking at it closer it’s still stock i believe, maybe a little more investigation is required lol 💪

    • @noahdunaway
      @noahdunaway 6 месяцев назад

      @@MMCGRACING you may be able to see better on the bottom of that cylinder to tell if it has a sleeve, looking at the valve relief I believe it has a sleeve.

    Funny you would mention the cigar boats, there is a hot rod boat company in Australia called C E E engineering. Would be a very well travelled piece if that is from them. With the cam bearings all looking good it would stand to reason that the mains would be ok too, yes ? being the cam is that much higher in the block and also gallery fed. Figure the pan probably got smoked and dislodged the pickup eh. Look forward to catching up more Herb 👍

    I'm sure you want my opinion so here it is. I believe you should put the car together like Jens Dad would have.
    In order to honor him you should build the car for him and let his daughter enjoy it in the way he would of done it.
    So many times I see people take someone else's dream of their project and make it their own instead of continuing to build the original owners plan. Just my opinion. No matter what the important thing is to put it on the road so Jen can enjoy it.
