  • The calathea musaica is an “easy” calathea to care for, as it can withstand and x to a wide variety of conditions (for a calathea). The patterning on the leaves are very striking. These guys used to be very popular, but thanks to their fast growth habit and ease of propagation, they have become very affordable now. In this video I share care tips and show you propagation from beginning all the way till the end. This plant actually did really well at onlyplants store, so some of the plants you see at the end of the video are in good homes now :)

    Thank you for this! I hadn't realized that about it putting out pups; now I am looking forward to the spring so I can separate a few pups and make some more plants! It was also encouraging to see that your original plant could have a variety of issues, and still come back all beautiful and healthy. And as always, I LOVE that you showed us an update; I know that probably makes it harder on you, since you have to remember to update instead of getting it all done at once, but it is extremely helpful and really sets your videos apart in a great way -- that and the fact that you don't pretend to be perfect with your plants.

    Thanks Sean, this is an expensive and hard to come by plant in New Zealand, I bought one after seeing your video, I always wanted one but not sure if I can take care of it being a calathea. I killed 1 and the rest seems to me struggling but it’s still early days. Thank you again for posting your plants with us. Until the next plant.

    I've had this plant for about a year now and it hasn't grown much. I had to switch to rain water and have moved the location around a bit. Right now I have it under a grow light thinking it would do better but still the same. I'm just given up on calatheas and decided I'm just going to stick to Pothos and all the hardy plants like snake and zz.

    • @onlyplants

      Its not for everyone 😀 my musaica didnt grow for the first year too until I changed the potting mix and gave it more light than other calatheas.

    When I repotted my Musica I found a bunch of tuber like things in the bottom of the pot. Were those new plants? I feel silly asking a question like this but I didn’t see any on your Musica when you repotted and propagated her.

      The ginger-like things will sprout baby shoots. But if it looks like single bulb/corm thats clear looking then its just their water storage facility.

    Hi Sean✨ I have a question. i have calathea musaica at my office and it almost died. I didn’t know how to care for it. Now it has 7to9 leaves in total and one new leaf is growing. The problem is its not humid at my office, so I dont know how to prevent leaves from browning. Is it okay if I spray it with water on leaves ?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  6 месяцев назад

      Not good to spray water on the leaves, it only elevates humidity for 10-15 min and theres chance of bacteria in the water. They don’t require a ton of humidity in my experience. You could have them grouped with other plants if you have other plants.
      Their new leaves may take time to adjust to your environment if you just got it.
      The biggest culprit usually is light levels and watering. Dont over or under water (this plant is quite forgiving though). Check the roots if its losing leaves fast, there may be clues down there.

    I used to be crazy about calatheas but it was one sided... killed all either to pest or wrong care😢 . They are beautiful but I am not ready to have them again .One day I shall try my all time favourite white fusion ( killed 3 of those ). 🤦‍♀️

      The most important thing for me was to use distilled water with calatheas. They can adapt to other problems but if you have too hard water they will die.

    Hello, not sure if you'll see this. I have a couple of these but my older plant has leaves that seem dull compared to my new plant and the network pattern isn't as bold, if that makes sense. Any advice for this?

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад +1

      The new leaves actually come out faded green but they usually turn darker over time.
      If thats not the case I have 2 suspicions. (1) it may be getting too much light, hence the plant is producing less chlorophyll (dark green color) in response to that condition.
      (2) it lacks nitrogen, a component in fertilizer that promotes green chlorophyll in leaves.
      Hope this helps 😀

    • @Erika70079
      @Erika70079 2 года назад

      @@onlyplants thank you so much! I think it is too much light and could probably use a very diluted fertilizer. I will try those things. :)

    Hello, can you help? My Calathea grew new leaf but it is like white and like transparent on the leaf base, and near the tip it is normal and green. What is happening? Calathea mauie did the very same thing and it died in a few months :( How to stop this??? This new leaf if floppy and white and half of leaf is like trasparent like no chlorophil :( Older leaves look ok as they did before :(

    • @onlyplants
      @onlyplants  2 года назад

      It is likely that the plant is deficient with nitrogen, an essential element for production of chlorophyll. If you have pics please do send to me via instagram I would love to have a look. @bo.tan.ist
