Just got a new clutch in my e90 325i and it's like learning to drive all over again. The grab point I'm used to is gone lol. I appreciate this video about driving normal for 500 or so miles. Guess I'll use the backroads going to work for a bit rather than the highway 🤝🏾
Yup, no problem! Ha! Same thing happened to me on another car I had many years ago. I was so used to the roasted clutch grabbing so high because the clutch disk had no pad on it, that when it was changed, the first time I drove the car, totally stalled out haha. Obviously because the new disk actually had pad and the engagement point was like night and day lower.
Very good advice - explained so well. Just what I was looking for. Thanks for uploading!
Glad it helped!
Best video for general new clutch breakin I've seen yet thanks very much!
Thanks! Appreciate that!

I’m getting a new clutch in my 16’ wrx on Monday. Good to know thank you!
Glad it helped
I’m in the comments to learn how to break in the clutch on my 2016 wrx that I just got back today 😂
Glad I found your video. I had a new clutch put in my ‘05 Carolla. Like another comment said, I felt like I was learning manual all over again. Stalled twice to start with 🤦🏻♀️ lol. I don’t know the right words to use.. slick/loose maybe? It shifts and drives nicely. But I’m like dropping gears because it feels odd/loose
Haha, yeah just gotta break it in and get used to the new engagement point.
@@nukem384 okay thanks for the video and responding! I feel better. I’ll give it a bit to get used to
The clutch on my 2008 Scion xB has just been replaced and I felt like I’ve just started driving a manual again. So I guess I have to go on a break in state.
Yes, break it in or it's not going to last very long.
Same. 96 Z32, original clutch felt amazing. Not too stiff, grabbed towards the end of engagement, engaged smooth. New clutch put in, and holy crap there is little to no threshold for engagement.
@@flusteredweasel7483 I feel like this is because the new clutch has all sorts of pad on it, whereas the old one had little pad, making you lift the pedal up higher for it to grab. But in any case, yes, it's an adjustment for sure.
@@nukem384 so this is normal then?
@@flusteredweasel7483 I would think so. But this is just my assumption.

This is very good. I had new clutch installed into my Ford F-150 and it feels sorta like I can almost feel the grooves in the clutch when I let the clutch out, because it's causes a dull vibration. It's not the kind of jumpy feel when a used clutch isn't mating properly. My new clutch was just installed TODAY, so I imagine as the clutch breaks in that vrrrrrrrrr kinda feeling when I let the clutch out will vanish (?).
Streetwise Guitar didnt even know they made F-150s in stick, wow! I hope so? Usually right from the start, the clutch shouldnt be shaking at all, even when brand new. At least, thats been my experience
2012 Mini Cooper. Mine is doing the same thing (Shaking, vibrating feeling) at end of engagement of clutch. wonder if my “break in period” wasn’t long enough. Damn.
Wow. Thank you!

Thanks. Appreciate it
Just changed the clutch in my IS300, changed to a single mass supra flywheel and sprung supra clutch kit. I am looking forward to driving it like a granny and getting the clutch all good so I can enjoy the new flywheel at high revs :)
Man my friend had that car back in the day. Very cool car indeed! Hope you're good at leg pressing? Haha, that setup sounds super stiff to get the clutch up and down. Have fun once it's broken in!
@@nukem384 thanks man, I really enjoyed your video it was very informative. This setup actually feels a lot lighter, the dual mass flywheel was heavy and the clutch felt sluggish, now the revs drop a lot faster and the clutch is a lot more responsive. I just haven't been able to figure out how to loosen the nut that allows the bite point to be adjusted, since it is currently at the floor and I am riding the clutch anytime I start or try to downshift. that thing just won't come loose for some reason
Makes sense, thanks, Sensei.
Lol, no problem
Thanks just installed a aggressive clutch on my car wanna get on it but need it to last!
Nice nice. Gotta be patient for justttt a little! Then you can rip away :D!
Great video!
Thanks! Glad it helped!
I cringe at my past self because I used to slip the clutch to hold my car in place for minutes at a time. Luckily we already knew my clutch was going out when we bought the car, and I'm going to be able to break the clutch in like a normal person, but damn, I really want to go back in time and teach myself to use the brake/ebrake as a habit.
Haha, I used to do that for fun too at stop lights. No as long as you, but every now and then. Live and learn :D.
I just got a new clutch on my 2008 Toyota Aygo. I actually completely burned through the last clutch so my pedal was literally fully extended just to below biting point. Now it feels like a new car but the threshold is so much lower. Stalled the car about 5 times but I am getting used to it now.
Yeah, I did that too when I got a new clutch on a different car. Totally stalled the first time because the engagement point was way lower than before. You'll get it back real fast though.
Helpful video! I just changed my clutch on my 02 civic and the pedal feels stiff, is that normal?
I'm assuming you just changed it out for another stock clutch right? Even still, the parts are new, especially the pressure plate. That's probably where the little bit of stiffness is coming from, since the fingers on the pressure plate are new and not worn out like the old clutch/pressure plate. I have a video on how to install the clutch/fly on this gen Civic if you want to take a look and see if you did anything different? Let me know and I'll link you.
I just replaced the clutch in my Civic too!
Awesome! I'm glad I did it myself. Saved a ton of money and learned a lot too!
Thank you for the video, but I do have one question, is rev matching off limits until that 500 mile period is over because when traffic starts to slow I have the habit to downshift form fourth gear down to third. I would assume that rev matching is safe to do as long as you don't go over 3500-4000 rpm like you said but would love some input from someone with more experience.
Yeah you can. Just be careful with it and don't overrev the engine, as you've mentioned.
thanks for showing us the method
No problem!
Watching from Las Vegas, hope we can support each other’s channel 🥂
nukem384 is it okay to downshift with a brand new clutch? i got a stage 1 clutch for my civic and i’m really scared that i’m gonna ruin it the first drive
@@DatHondaBoi223 what do you mean by downshift? In normal driving, yes of course you'll have to downshift, so it's fine. But if you mean like slamming it into a lower gear to get ready for a street race, yeah, I wouldn't do that.
nukem384 okay, i normally downshift so that my revs are around 3k. Is that too high?
Dang good thing I watched this, bought a new clutch kit and I have a bad habit on really reving it high and trying to reach the top speed of every gear shift.
That's a great way to break your clutch and tranny real fast haha. But hey, if you're enjoying your car doing that, then the more power to you!
@@nukem384 when you say break do you mean like "break in" or it actually breaks, I'm a little new to car's on the technical side I don't know that much.
@@zombiekila187 Yeah, like actually break. Anytime you rev it up, you're putting a lot of stress on the clutch and tranny. So eventually, the parts are going to give.
I couldn't help my self but do a couple hard pulls in my new clutch. do you think I already ruined it from a couple pulls or should I still be fine other than that I've been driving slow and shifting slow. Just installed my clutch 2 days ago
haha nice. I'm can't say for sure. You'll know once you start driving it around more and if you feel it slipping. If so, you probably "glazed" it like I mentioned in the video.
@@nukem384 🔺️ this guy is crazy with how much a clutch job costs.
I occasionally slip it a little more than I should on normal acceleration but I never ever go wide open throttle or run it at really high rpm. Especially if it's a tuned or powerful car
What do you exactly mean by not to engage clutch after 2k? How about when putting car in N from 3rd or 4th should i clutch in or no
Just don't ride the clutch. If you're at a dead stop and your RPM's are over 2k before you let the clutch out and the car starts moving, that's riding the clutch. You're basically burning the clutch and that's not good.
I jus changed the clutch on my car but I haven’t started it yet, the gear stick feels loose thou will it be fine once I start it up?
New trans oil can make a night and day difference. Especially different brands. Did you put the same fluid in?
I just got a new clutch in my mustang and went out for a drive, I was a little hard on it and at some points but never shifted past 5k rpms no launches just rolling into it, after a while I began to smell something burning, is the smell normal for brand new clutches or could I have caused damaged?
Could be a combination of both because you we're driving it a bit hard. Normally, if you're driving the car easy with a new clutch though, you shouldn't be smelling any burning. I would lay off the harder driving, even if you're not popping gears and such, just until it's broken in, then you can let loose.
A new clutch will always have a smell. It's normal.
Ik this is old but the smell is like hot breaks. It’s normal, that just the clutch getting hot and starting to mate with the flywheel
I did a few 30 rolls the first day of driving with my stage 3 and now my cars shakes a lot and won’t go into 1st gear easy , and it turned off on me while being in neutral I think I fucked up lmao fuck
Will the clutch be okay after the break in if you accidentally dumped it at higher revs. Im still getting used to stick and bought a car with an almost gone clutch so i got used to the bite point being up high. When i dumped it, it was at around 3k. Otherwise ive been taking it easy. Just wondering cause id rather spend another 1.3k 😬
One time is fine. It's not going to do anything. Get used to driving a stick if that clutch will hold out. Then change it for a new one and break it in properly.
just installed a new clutch. is it normal for my pedal to click everytime i push it down?
If it didn't do it before, no. The clutch and everything associated with it should function the same after a new clutch install.
Do you have to hit all 6 gears each time you’re driving when it’s new ? Usually I always street drive anyways and hit 4th gear maximum.
Nah. The important part is that you're changing gears. You basically just want to continue to use the clutch/pressure plate. Gear doesn't matter.
I just installed a stage 3 clutch on a 2004 Honda Accord and when I try to take off the clutch feels jumpy is that normal ? I do have to change one side engine mount but I’m not sure if it’s the engine mount that I’m feeling
You may want to jump on the forums and see if that's normal for the performance clutch you have. My video is geared towards the everyday person with a regular, non performance clutch.
I would not be surprised if that's normal for your stage 3 clutch though. That thing has to have some serious grip compared to a regular clutch. It's not going to behave like a normal clutch in some aspects because it's made to be beat on and grab the crap out of your flywheel.
i’m about to break in my clutch so i have auto rev match. should i avoid down shifting in general or can i rev match to down shift at low rpm
You can still rev match. You have to get into lower gears somehow right haha. Better to rev match rather than slamming it into the lower gear.
Lol I've replaced c li itches but never broke one in before, as I've never replaced a. Lut h in anything I've owned. I used to trade my cars too fast. Just bought a decent little focus for not much but discovered veery quickly the clutch is gone. It let's go I'd ylu give it too much throttle. Right around 3500 rpms under moderate throttle you suddenly find a few new neutrals lol. Gonna drop the trans and replace the clutch and slave. Wasn't sure of the brake in prodecure. Thanks.
No problem! Glad it was helpful!
Is it normal for a new clutch to smell while breaking it in or is it evidence I am engaging the clutch at too high an RPM?
What rev have you been engaging it? It's not uncommon for it to smell a little, as there are chemicals on it from the factory. As long as you're not riding the clutch, you should be ok.
Prolly wasn’t bled right
Thanks bro! I just finished putting my 2013 Dodge Dart back together after installing a new LUK clutch. It wasn't a fun job, though I enjoy working on my vehicles, it's still a big job and I don't want to screw my clutch up.
Great job! Yeah for sure, clutches take forever, but hey, you saved a bunch of money doing it, so there's that!
Got a new clutch but I can hear like a shhhhhhhh sound with my exhaust what can it be?
That sounds like something is grinding, which is not good. Maybe the throw out bearing?
Hi! Is it normal for the revs to go really high and have some weak acceleration with a new clutch? I wanna ensure i keep this new one for as long as possible. Very helpful video!
Errr...that doesn't sound very good actually. That sounds like the clutch is slipping TBH. You just got a new clutch installed and it's doing this?
@@nukem384 yeah...gonna go back the mechanic so he can look at it. Do you know reasons this could happen?
@@stephaniefrost9720 1.Possible throw out bearing either wasn't installed correctly or they didn't replace it with the clutch.
2. Flywheel wasn't replaced or at the very least resurfaced.
3. You did some big burn outs and glazed the clutch like I mentioned in the video lol (probably not this one).
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. But a new clutch should be working like a normal clutch, not an old slipping one.
This is what my car was doing when my clutch started to go bad. Higher revving with no acceleration. I just got my clutch replaced and although it’s a different feel while shifting.. it’s driving just fine
So i have two different maps for my car, one original (210hp/370nm) and one tuned (280hp/410nm).
Would it be best to put in the original file after the clutch change?
Or does it even matter?
Doesn't matter. Just don't do any crazy burnouts or push the car while you're breaking the clutch in.
Just got new clutch on mine and i have vibration feeling when taking off and reversing. My mechanic will check it on tuesday. I read this is normal for high performance clutch. Idk
Yeah I would start looking on the forums on that specific clutch. Mine never had vibration at all. But then again, I did put in an OEM clutch, not a performance clutch. I wonder if the throw out bearing isn't quite on right. That would be my guess.
So if you “glaze the clutch” do you mean the friction plate?
Yup. That surface becomes smooth or "glazed" and it won't grab the flywheel nearly as well.
Does it have to be 500 miles in one day or cam you make this a 2-3 day breaking in for the clutch?? Thanks
nooooo, doesnt need to be in one day. just the next 500 miles. it can be over whatever time period you want. i think it took me probably like 2-3 weeks to hit that (my commute to work is really short)
Yes...need to put all 500 miles on it within a 5 hour period
I've just had a new cluch and my new biting point feels like the car is going to stall but it never done this before. It makes the whole car rattle until I apply revs. When before I could just reverse out of a bay just using clutch with no vibration etc. Is this normal for a new cluch?
It's not an aftermarket clutch right? Did you also get the flywheel changed too? Or just the clutch? If it was the old flywheel, was it resurfaced?
Thanks for the reply. Not was a brand new cluch, didn't change any fly wheel or anything like that 😑. I'm going to give it a couple of weeks and if it's still like it I'll have to ring the garage.
@@shaungallagher3300 That's probably your problem right there. If the shop didn't resurface the flywheel, that's going to cause that chatter. Only way to fix it is to resurface the flywheel or get a new one unfortunately.
@@nukem384 is it possible to new clutch adopt on old flywheel after one period of time...you know, to became smoother surfaces due mutual wearing...?
@@strahinjicban4682 You can reuse the old flywheel, but if you're going to do that, I highly highly recommend you get it resurfaced and checked for thickness. There's a minimum thickness level before the flywheel goes bad, just like with brake rotors. If you don't resurface the old flywheel, the new clutch will chatter and go bad real fast. Sometimes it's just better to spend the extra $100 and get a new flywheel as well since you're in there and you have to take the flywheel off anyway to resurface.
I installed a stage 1 excedy clutch in my si, after 1-2 months since the install there is a burning smell after I do a pull is this normal?
No. But it also wouldn't surprise me because you're putting a lot of stress on the engine/tranny if you're doing a hard pull, so it could just be from all the stress. Are you launching the car really hard or something?
I would say just try and take it easy probably just went too hard on it too early. They can take a lot of force and friction. Obviously breaking in helps over the long run. Break it in a little more. Also hopefully you didn’t install a 1000hp clutch for only a couple hundred engine hp :) good luck glad it works
what if i high rev 3-4 times will it affect it a lot?
I wouldn't do that. Great way to mess the clutch up that you've just spent a ton of time (or money) installing.
How do I down shift by rev matching or do I just coast in neutral don’t want to mess up my new clutch ?
Just don't rev match. You can still down shift normally, no need to coast. Just engage the clutch lightly and don't drop it. Once you break it in, then rev matching should be ok.
@@nukem384 don't rev match during a break in? Are you sure? It just feels rough/choppy if I dont.. feel like it could be doing more damage :/
@@andrewbatres5918 That's why you need to engage slowly, that way the clutch and next gear will be more "aligned" when you engage the engine. I mean, just think about it, if you're rev matching, that basically means you're burning the clutch just so downshifting isn't all jerky if you're shifting fast. It's only temporary, and once you've broken it in, then you can rev match and drive the car how to want without worry of ruining the clutch too soon.
@@nukem384Sorry but you got the whole concept wrong,
during Rev Matching you are basically doing the clutch job you are getting very close if not exactly at the required revs so the clutch doesn't have to slip as much to get the engine speed matched to the input shaft speed (transmission speed at given gear)
So rev matching = if done correctly, longer lasting clutch
Double clutching (With rev matching) longer lasting gearbox synchros, could cause some wear on the clutch linkage (cable or hydraulics) and maybd some wear on the pressure plate but good for the clutch disc
Do we need to break in clutch and flywheel for automatic gearbox? I just had my clutch and flywheel changed on my DSG DQ200 Gearbox on a Golf MK6
Errr automatics don't have a clutch. They do have a torque converter though. But yes, I would go easy on the car for the first at least 500 miles so everything gets broken in properly.

DSG gear box essentially has a clutch (try this: slowly creep up you can actually feel it grab) I would definitely take it easy brother

@@Alex-tv3jy BTW Alex, same 500 miles sufficient to let it bite in?
Is 300 miles good or does it have to be 500. I’m dyin to drive my car fast again
It's all risk reward. Honestly I'd give it more than 500 miles, as that's a minimum. If you don't, you risk the clutch prematurely slipping and giving yourself problems, but you'll have fun sooner. It's up to you
I just got a new clutch in & wanted to feel vtec at 5,800 rpm....only did it right after the clutch was installed for like 3 miles....should it be fine? Right now im at 230 miles & been going under 4k rpm ever since
Probably not the best for the clutch, as I mentioned in the video you could get that glazed look. You'll know if the clutch starts to slip. I wouldn't do that again until after it's broken in.
@@nukem384 I havent done it nomore.....it was only that one time.....it shouldnt glaze that fast i think...idk u think it could glaze just by that one time?
@@carlosmanriquez5987 You should be ok

Technically you are lightly frying the clutch when rev matching to sync the tranny and motor. I would lay off of it just until you break the clutch in, then you can do it.

Heh heh thanks! I don't do those types of vlogger videos were they tell you half a tutorial and talk to whatever stuff for the rest :P
Is it fine to let the car stretch it's legs a little? Like not 100% mashing it. Maybe like 60-70% throttle and easing it in.
I would say that's ok, but if you want maximum life out of the clutch, be patient with the break in period and then you can let it rip without having to worry.
@@nukem384 Better keep myself in check then. This twin plate clutch wasn't cheap.
@@vongdong10 Yeah, always better to be safe that sorry. It's only 500 miles, that's like 1% of the total miles the clutch will see
@@nukem384 What are your thoughts on loading up the engine? Like going up hills in lower gears? I feel like the brake shop i took my car to recently went for a short joyride and want to test if the clutch is slipping or not.
@@vongdong10 Yeah that's fine. You're supposed to go up hills in lower gears or you're going to badly lug the engine and it might actually stall out the engine if you're in too high a gear on a hill. You don't need to go up hills to see if the clutch is slipping. You'll know if you romp it and the clutch can't hold the power, on a straight.
What would be your opinion on having a brand new performance clutch installed, and highway driving the same day?? Bad idea I’m guessing ?
Meh, it's fine. Just remember that the highway driving, especially if a long distance, isn't going to count as break in miles because you aren't exercising the clutch.
@@nukem384 thanks for the reply ! Although I am aware that highway miles do not add or do anything for the break in period , my question was more of just general driving on the highway after clutch install ! Is it normal for the release point of the clutch pedal to go up a little bit in the break in period?
i would say thats ok. as you break in the clutch, its going to get adjusted to the flywheel and stuff, so there might be subtle movements and things. but after its broken in, it should be pretty consistent
In my gf's 02 civic the bitepoint is literally on the floor after replacing with a stage 2 clutch and OEM flywheel. This normal?

@@nukem384 Thank you, liking the stiffer pedal but I hoped it would fix my shudder when engaging 1st but it still does it, thinking the engine mounts i put in are cheap already bad.
Waffeey did you change out the flywheel with a new flywheel? Usually a warped flywheel is the shutter problem. But possibly could be the mounts too
I didnt know this.... A friend replaced his clutch a week ago and immediately went on a long trip.... The van was travelling daily on long trips.... After a week there was a vibration when pulling away and sometimes trouble shifting when vehicle is cold..... Took out the gearbox and parts of the clutch lining broke into pieces ..... Guess this videos explained why this happened.... The clutch wasnt properly broken in
Glad it helped, but sucks all that work went to waste :(
Just installed a new clutch kit. Is it normal for 2nd gear to have a pause?
It shouldn't. A new clutch should behave just like an old clutch that is fine, al beit maybe be a little stiffer in the beginning.
@@nukem384 it has a pause, even from neutral to reverse. The original clutch had 3 springs, this has four. Plate looks similar. Gear light came in once and went out. Should I just watch it?
@@WalkBoutJa Yeah I would. If it concerns you, I would get a professional opinion on it. I've never heard of that happening, but I'm also not a mechanic.
@@nukem384 they said it needs to be programed
@@WalkBoutJa Interesting. Since when does a mechanical part need to be programmed? You have like some dual clutch or like an SMG or something? Haha
Can you do all 400 to 500 miles of street driving in the same day?
Yup, time frame doesn't matter.
@@nukem384 sick thanks man
@@lifeisshortmakethemostofit4529 Yup no problem! Enjoy the sites driving that many miles all at once!
@@nukem384 will do man
New clutch still smells like burning?
thats not good. something probably isnt installed right or working properly
What about when its breaking in? Just done a clutch change, i dont know what a clutch burn smells like but recently ive been smelling a similar smell to paint burning on a freshly painted exhaust or something
can you go on a long trip?
Of course you can. As I mentioned though, you're not going to be breaking in the clutch if you do. So don't count those highway miles as part of the 500 mile break in period.
Any experience with Duralast clutches?
I do not, but consider this...
If you have the same generation Civic as me, the Duralast clutch is the same price as the OEM clutch linked in the description. Considering how much labor is involved in doing a clutch, even if OEM is a little more expensive, I would highly recommend getting that instead of doing labor all over again because of a cheap aftermarket part.
My original clutch lasted me 180K miles. Just changed it. I Hope it gives me the same amount lol
That's pretty good! Sounds like you're easy on your clutch :P.
Reading some of these comments I’m realizing I don’t think I know sht about driving manual 😅
I’ve driven nothing but manual since 1999. But. I don’t understand what rev matching means? I can’t be that bad if my clutch lasted 198k miles right? I don’t understand these terms. I might be doing these things but not know the lingo 😅
Lolol, I always thought of rev matching as a racing type thing. If you don't race or know what hitting an apex is, then don't worry about it. You don't need to rev matching for daily driving. It's definitely a car enthusiast thing. But yeah, if you can get a clutch to last 198k, you're doing fine.
@rumham7466 Your comment made me smile because I totally get it. I've been driving manual almost as long as you. I taught myself and there was no youtube back then. A couple years ago, I started looking into it because I thought I could clean my clutch work up a bit. I'd recommend to look up rev matching. I think it's a good skill to have. Lately I have been watching "Conquer Driving"'s channel. He is a driving instructor who I think really explains how to drive clutch properly. Man I really didn't know much about how the clutch mechanics worked for how long I had been driving. 😂
@@twelevensies hahha. Glad you get me lol. I’ll definitely check out what you recommended.

Thanks! Glad it helped
wwell crap I am basically doing everything wrong. I think I may have glazed my new clutch!!!!
Noooo. Good luck and hopefully not!
Take a shot everytime he says clutch
Would be a great game to get absolutely hammered lol
You can break in your clutch on the way to the hospital for alcohol intoxication

But why do we break in the clutch easy and the brakes hard? It's the same concept
Not really. The clutch pad isn't made to be grinded against at high speed (burning the clutch). That's why lots of people like rev matching, that way the clutch and flywheel are going the same speed when engaged, which means less friction. Whereas brake pads are made to cause friction against the rotor to slow the car down. They are made of different materials too.
No engine breaking.
Yes, definitely don't want to be doing that.
Easy peasy.
1.Depress clutch pedal all the way down.
2.Rev up to redline.
3.Drop clutch pedal. Make sure you shift.
You just broke in your clutch.
(All puns intended😊)
Jagdeo Nathoo lol fun times. Do that after you breaki it in, it might last longer haha
And do not rest the hand on the gear lever! That will cause unnecessary wear to the fork in the gearbox. Never hold the clutch pedal pressed when standing att a red light! That will wear out the release bearing.
I’m usually in first gear at red lights with the clutch in
Thijs Boom that’s a bad habit, not hating or anything, i used to do it too. but if you continue that, you’re causing wear on your release bearing, a good tip is when you’re headed towards a stop sign or red light, shift down gears all the way to 2nd, not super fast but just until you can downshift and not be in high rpms, then once you’re getting close to the stop, clutch in, go to neutral, and let off the clutch, then right as the light turns green, clutch in and go to first
