The Kinks are one of the most underrated groups of all time. They were seminal and should be appreciated more than they've been.
I like their songs, my favorite has to be "Dedicated Follower of Fashion".

A Top 5 Kinks tune for me. Written after Elvis died in 77 - "the King is dead", the Kinks continued on for 19 more years.

The Kinks probably would have been much bigger in the US had they not been banned from performing here for 5 years. Circa 1968, they crossed a union picket line to perform and were subsequently blackballed from American venues, just at a time when their contemporaries were able to play stadium shows and develop huge US followings. They used that 5 years to focus on making succinctly british records, includingMuswell Hillbillies, Arthur, Village Green Preservation Society
Actually, Harri you're mostly correct about the inspiration for the song. At the time the album "Misfits" was scheduled to be recorded, 2 of the other 3 members of the band quit. Only Mick Avory, their drummer, remained (and he was conflicted as well). So, Dave and Ray had to hunker down together to write the album and it was, for both of them, a time when they became closer than they'd been in many years. For Dave, though, the song is more about the band breaking up and the stress of trying to keep their careers afloat. For Ray, as he's said in interviews, the song IS about him and his brother's relationship. So, choose what you wish to believe. Anyway, I've always loved this album from them. From their 1978 album, "The Misfits", written by Ray Davies, during a time of the breaking up of the band. Tired of touring and needing a break, this song was the highest charting song for them since 1970, Lola.
Elvis died during the writing of the song and is referenced as The King. Dan the fan an reference to a light on late into the night, that Ray thought might have been a fan up mourning Elvis.

Seriously underrated
Nice reaction! A few things: The King is Dead refers to Elvis Presley passing away... It was at a time where the band was close to breaking up. Ray sings he thinks they still have a way to go, describing how much the band means for hardline KinKs-fans but also cautioning to not spend your life in a rock 'n' roll fantasy as some fans do but keeping it real. GSTK!
This song hit a little too close to home back in the '70s!! Very insightful! 'Sleepwalker' and 'Celluloid Heroes' are a couple other '70s gems.

I’m a fan of the kinks since 1964 and what really ticks me off it when anyone writes about the British Invasion 99% of the time they list the Beatles-Stones and the Who …leaving the kinks OUT….that’s total BS ….I would list it this way …Beatles-kinks-stones-who.
