People hate on sbmm as cope. It’s the gaming boogie man. It’s mathematically proven to be a net positive but as soon as people lose they claim it was because the game gave them bad teammates and strong opponents. Despite this being impossible over any period longer than 1 or 2 games since it would mean everyone would be losing all day. They then muddy the waters and make it impossible to discuss real issues like engagement based matchmaking.
I think sbmm can be done well and it can be done poorly. Which basically comes down to how strict it is. A version of sbmm designed to make every game as balanced as possible is a bad one. This leads to a vast majority of matches that are close, which at first glance seems good. However this makes games overall more stressful, thus reducing the "fun" quality. Good sbmm will give you a combination of games where you can stomp, be stomped on, and sprinkle in some close ones. It gives you a feeling of being strong and weak, while sprinkling in those close and stressful matches that keep you on the edge of your seat.

I'd argue BG3 and Elden Ring also were also a part of this. A lot of the biggest game companies have basically became too big, which caused them to be making risk adverse, minimally viable/bad games with a strong focus on monetization. They stopped taking risks and innovating games. I'd argue the wild success of Fortnite was a catalyst for the issues we're seeing now.
@@PurpleEnvixity The game is a boring slog with barely any effort put into the gameplay design and creature design, all the effort being put into making the game addicting, not fun, and basically made to make a quick buck riding on the "pokemon is bad" opinion as pokemon was going through rough times, the developers don't care for their games and the only reason why palworld keeps getting updated is because it is popular unfortunately, but looking at their game library you can literally tell they just get "inspired" by popular games to make cheap knock offs (to put it harshly) and then keep working on it only if it is popular as their second most popular game, "craftopia" or whatever it was called still being in early access for years and the game was essentially a genshin impact/ zelda botw "inspired" game that got left behind due to palworld being more profitable, and their newer game being a what looks to be a "hollow knight" inspired game as the screenshots look veeery similar to hollow knight. So listen, obviously getting inspired to make games from other games is okay and most of the times lead to their own masterpieces, but seeing their catalogue, with each game having totally different style and gameplay, you can just tell they only care about trying to make easy money through early access with games that borderline rip off popular/trendy games.
Quality will always win. If a game is truly elite and above and beyond others, it doesn't matter about monetization and other shit. Fortnite dominates because there is always something new, the skins are shit people who play the game want. Siege dominated the shooter scene after it's year 2 because it did what Battlefield and Call of Duty didn't and listened to it's audience. Disco Elysium, The Witcher 3, Hades all succeed because of the quality of the game. How many people knew what the fuck The Witcher was before 3? Not that many. I guarantee the amount of crossover of people who played 2 and 3 is less than 50% of the actual players that played 3. The game was so good, it didn't matter. Sports games like NBA 2K sell extremely well because there's no competition. But who dominated before that? NBA Live. NBA Live was the dominant basketball game until NBA 2K made a better game. Nowadays there's so many studios, games make so much money, and if you are fucking up and pissing your audience off, someone will swoop in. People were angry about the recent Pokémon games, Palworld swoops in. Overwatch 2 is pissing people off, Marvel Rivals yoinks it's whole shit. Mortal Kombat 1 is a disaster of a micro transaction fuck fest, that's fine because Street Fighter 6 and Tekken 8 are hot on its heels and steal it's audience. Even games that fail like XDefiant are gunning for Call of Duty and while that game failed, do you really think another studio isn't gonna see that and go "Ok, but we can try to gun for their spot". How many fucking rouge like games have come out since Hades? How many games have just completely ripped off Vampire Survivors? Quality will always win.
I mean, palworld ripped off every other game it's "based on" with zero iteration beyond adding slavery. It was a meme game made by a shovelware company from the very start.

Let's be real there, players don't give a single shit about devs using AI, copying or whatever, if the game is good and fresh, it's gonna sell. And we also got Balatro this year too lmao
2024 was a great year for non AAA games, we had Helldivers 2, Space Marine 2, Black Myth Wukong, Metaphor Re Fantazio, Marvel Rivals.
Edit: OK not non AAA games, more like sleeper hits from non mainstream studios and publishers. Let's not pretend that Focus Entertainment or Game Science are equivalent to EA or Activision.
Dude these are all AAA games
Literally only helldivers 2 was not AAA from this list.
@SH1NK1R01 It's not since HD2 was published by and its IP is owned by Sony. What I meant was that these games were all made by lesser known studios, with maybe the exception of Metaphor, and all these games drastically overperformed their developers' expectations.
@@DDustinC I gotta admit, it was pretty cool that Sony was confident in Arrowhead studios to make a great game that could be apart of their live service stuff, even though hd1 wasn't well known.
@@DDustinC that’s not what AAA means. You are confusing that for the definition of indie. AAA is defined by the budget and team size. Helldivers is not a AAA game.
Disgusting for reacting react content is disgusting. You are disgusting when you do react content.
Palworld is slop. Creatively bankrupt. Shouldn't support that type of business no matter what the product is.
What a wood tier take.
Call of Duty.
Pokemon.
Fortnite.
Legend of Zelda.
Dark Souls.
Persona.
Mario.
Halo.
Tekken.
Street Fighter.
Monster Hunter.
Try Again.
@@Tailstraw_xD cool argument.
@ZekeTheThunderWolf what point are you failing to make?
@@rekkwaffle7668 You want something a little more substantial? Palworld was made by a team of less than 50 and made the AAA game released by the owners of *the most profitable IP on planet earth* look like a joke.
