i just bought one of your books to see if it will with my devolepment as i come from eletric guitar to bass but i still need to know the theory looking foward to seat with my bass and go all the things and exemples u put into the book thanks a lot dan (y)
Hey Mr. Wright. I picked up the bass at about that age. Kicking 82 now. I’m a utube university bass guitar student as well. Dan is the best. Good to see another senior learning like me.
glad to hear somebody else is 68. I started playing in my teens, but stopped after 20 years. Thanks Dan for your lessons. I've got almost all your books lol.
Hi Dan, I just had a massive EUREKA moment. That Dorian (mayor 6th, in this case F#) can be used in a Dorian song as a little fill with chromatic notes to come back to the root note. So F#, G, G# to A. Thank you for this lesson! All the best from Belgium 🇧🇪👍🏻
it kinda feels like you helped me loose my chains and set me free... I guess you know what I mean... I'm pretty sure that you do some of the best video lesson available on youtube.. I haven't watched many but the ones where you explain song writting and how to use scales
Playing bass since I was 13 studied circles of 5ithes, scales ,for years and then wood only play 1/8,1/4,R to 5th l made so hard on myself shapes so much better. and listen to your ears you need to know the other stuff but not at first it is really about having fun thanks Dan
Great lesson, Dan. I appreciate your relaxed presentation of these patterns with no pretense. I like the ways you’ve pulled some useful shapes out of the scalar patterns while building on the fundamentals. I look forward to viewing your other videos.
Another well explained, well executed, well absorbed lesson! So your straight forward, no frills attitude towards teaching, it makes it so much easier to understand!! If I had found you years ago, I’d be a much better bass player by now!! Keep those lessons coming!! I am inspired!!!!
Hi Dan! I love this lesson watched it several times already! I think you should write a book on patterns! I tried to download the pdf but the link doesn't work. Can you send me the link please!
Thanks for the response. I'm rewatching, working that first pattern. If you use the higher half step note, F# in this case, that works well for hammer ons and walkdowns. At first I was trying to work it in as a stand alone note but it's more a transitory note, it just gets you to where you're going.
They’re all based around A Minor/A Dorian. The intervals are down on the diagrams. If you don’t know about intervals, I have a lesson - just do a search. 👍
I just bought a 5 string bass because I like smooth jazz. However, I am a beginner. I play a little guitar but have never played bass. Did I make a mistake with the purchase? You can hardly find instructions on a 5 string. Nice tutorial btw. Cheers Roger
I wouldn’t say it’s a mistake although I’d usually recommend a 4 string for a beginner. I do have a few 5 string lessons (search on my site or channel). It’s a little more specialised than a 5 but the patterns are the same and if you really want to, you can learn it with hard work.
Yes, which would effectively mean you are using the major version since they contain the same notes. E.g. if you’re in G Major, playing G Major (or G major pentatonic) is the same as playing E Minor (or E Minor pentatonic).
You learn the formula that makes up a scale and that tells you which notes are sharp or flat. The circle of 5ths/4ths can help to memorise major and relative minor keys.
I’m embarrassed… I know the A minor pentatonic scales up and down the neck but NEVER put together how to just use parts and sound SO much better. DOH🙄. Thanks Dan!🙂👍
I recorded this lesson long enough ago that I’ve forgotten the specifics! But, I’m pretty sure I mention that in the video. You might need to watch the whole thing. Generally, major patterns with major chords, Minor with minor, and some with dominant chords (almost certain I mention it in the video).
@@adammadtin8451 you don’t have to do anything - context is key. So, even a root note could be perfect. The notes from the arpeggio are all merely options open to you. The mode/scale to use is dependent on the function of the chord within the progression and the style of music. In jazz, loads of options are open. In pop, generally, it’s the major scale (Ionian mode) or Lydian mode that you’d use with a major seventh chord. Again, depends on the chord progression.

so if i use a minor shape but im playing in a major key would i have to move it to the relative minor for it to sound right?

There is a competition actually! Send in $5,000 to me and I guarantee to send you a Sire. 🙏🙏
How do you know and decide when it's ok to use a flat note in the scale? Noticed a lot of flats in these patterns

Hi Dan, how much time on average takes to create and record bass line for new song?
It’s taken me anything from three minutes to three hours and more. There’s no average and every song is different.
