🔥🔥🔥🔥RUSH, 3-man Progressive Rock band from Canada. Their catalog is massive, spanning some 40+ years and 20 studio albums. RUSH performed their final concert in August of 2015 and retired as a band with the passing of drummer Neil Peart in 2020. Bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee and guitarist Alex Lifeson still perform together from time to time. "The Analog Kid" is a real banger you will really enjoy! ☮

You've found a truly deep rabbit hole with Rush . A great song & video is the Instrumental "YYZ" ( that is the airport code for their home in Toronto) done Live in Rio . Somehow the crowd manages to sing along with an instrumental ! The song "Spirit of Radio" has a great animated video for the studio track & there is also a great Live version of it done at a festival in Toronto that featured The Rolling Stones & Rush , a home town band, was an opening act . They do a quick tease of the Stones song "Paint it Black" before they launch into "Spirit of Radio" 🙂

Welcome to Rush! Yes, all of that sound comes out of just three people! The drummer, Neil Peart, is considered one of the best, and he is also their primary lyricist. He joined Rush shortly after the release of their debut album in 1974. The other two band members are Geddy Lee (who is the singer and bass player, and also plays keyboards and synth foot pedals, sometimes all at once); and Alex Lifeson, the guitar player. Alex and Geddy have been best friends since age 13. Alex has some of the most beautiful, creative and soulful guitar solos I've ever heard, and they all fit Rush's music perfectly. These three guys were the best of friends throughout their 40-year career. Sadly, Neil Peart passed away from brain cancer in 2020. I suggest that you check out Rush's live performances as well, where you can really see them bring their complicated music to life onstage (they are in fact known for their crazy time signature shifts). One of my personal live performance favorites by Rush is Digital Man, live from the Snakes & Arrows tour. You may want to read the lyrics ahead of time to get the overall meaning of the song, or have them called up onscreen while you watch. These three are all virtuoso-level musicians and Neil's lyrics are deep and cover a wide range of subjects.

Hello RND, my name is Brian from White Bear Lake, Minnesota... Love the reaction, RUSH is one of my favorite bands and drummer Neil Peart aka 'The Professor' (RIP) was my favorite drummer. So i have a song video for you to watch from the band Iron Maiden, it's the Live 1982 version of 'Hallowed Be Thy Name', it is considered to be the best rock video ever made, singer Bruce Dickinson sings his butt off in this video, you can really hear his opera like voice come out in this song, with his long vabratos, and long notes, not to mention his vocal range. In my opinion this why i think every other rock singer secretly wishes that they could sing like Bruce could when he was in his prime. Pay attention to the long note in the beggining of the song, and the 2 long notes at end of song, they are 'EPIC'...The song is about a man being sent to the gallows to be hanged and he is looking back on his life. Most of Iron Maiden's songs are about an important event that has happened in history. So watch this video for sure, it is amazing !!!...Must Watch.
    Thank You🤘🤘

Rush is the band that musicians listen(ed) to, especially in the eighties. In that era every aspiring musician wanted to be like Rush which (in hindsight) is rather funny.
Funny because Rush was seen as notoriously uncool. No excesses, no scandals. Female fans were all but non existent for decades (which became a running gag). Just three polite Canadian top notch musicians doing what they were very good at.
In the last decade of their career they went through a bit of a renaissance and finally got some of the main stream acclaim they so sorely lacked for decades.

Three (!) man band from Canada with 40 year career. Some highlights:
Three tremendously skilled musicians. Each among the best at their respective instruments.
Three way musical mind meld. They redefine the term “tight.”
The time signature changes you mentioned are a common feature, a form of transition the band is known for. They pull complex compositions off flawlessly.
They pretty much founded a genre of music called prog (progressive) metal. Prog rock (Yes, Pink Floyd, Genesis) with a harder edge. Newer prog metal bands strongly influenced by Rush include Tool, Dream Theater, Primus).
Prog rock features elements of classical music (long pieces, transitions, repeating grooves passed among various instruments).
Next songs for you: Spirit of Radio, Limelight, Subdivisions (shorter songs); Xanadu (live Exit Stage Left), 2112, Cygnus X-1 (2 parts) (longer songs); YYZ, La Villa Strangiato (instrumental).
Tom Sawyer was a character in a classic 1876 novel by Mark Twain that many of us had to read in school. Fictional 12 year old boy who was clever, independent minded and adventurous going up and down the Mississippi River with a grown enslaved man (Jim). Lyrics of this song describe a young man in modern times (early 80s) with similar qualities (clever, adventurous and mind of his own).
    Enjoy!

  • @VinE83656

I love Rush. Great band. This song came out as they were transitioning to more conventional commercially accessible shorter songs. In the 1970s they had some very progressive, lengthy songs. In the 80s they gained much more commercial success with the help of MTV music videos.
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is an American classic novel about Tom and his pal Huckleberry Finn. It took place in a rural, country area and probably around the 1900 or so. Todays Tom Sawyer and the reference to the Space he Invades was an obvious nod to the early 80s populate Space Invaders video game.

Around 2008, I worked in a nice liquor store in Indy. A man came in looking for good wine and old scotch. He'd been sent by the local amphitheater to buy after-show beverages for Rush, who were playing that night!! After the man chose 6 bottles (for $1600), he gave me six tickets! I found someone to cover my shift, and I dashed to the venue with a friend. We got there in time for set II. We were unable to get to our seats, because the crowd was packed in tight, but the tickets were for row 6 center!
Before I left the store, I helped a guy and told him the story. He said his best friend would've gone to the show, but he couldn't afford it. I gave him 2 tix on the spot. He lit up, and ran out like a bat out of hell to get his friend and tell him the good news!

The character of Tom Sawyer in the novels was interesting. A young boy who feels constrained by the rules and being constantly pressured to conform and comply. His opportunities to escape even briefly, aren't enough. He befriends another boy who is the son of a slave who doesn't go to school or have to go to church in fancy clothes and Tom sees this 'other life' as something desirable. He wishes to NOT belong, to be on the outside, a kind of outlaw. He decides he is going to be a pirate and run away with his two friends and live life on thr edge. It proves a rude awakening very quickly and he catches a glimpse of a very dark fractured life and what freedom could actually look like. Even though he returns home, he will still yearn for what is out there and he has become much wiser and more worldly than others in the town who never had the courage to venture out. In the song by Rush there are parallels drawn to the self-possessed free thinking youth of today. It is important to be a non-conformist critical thinker, but also to be able to navigate and adapt to the constraints of modern life. Social media can be kind of like Huckleberry's raft, you can drift along that stream aimless and free, but one must also be prudent and learn to navigate and manage it as a tool. This song is one of many 'Rush School' tracks, they always have much to say, much to teach. Neil's lyrics hit hard.

Hi Ree. Here's what AI says: The song “Tom Sawyer” by Rush has multiple meanings, including:
    A modern day rebel.
Neil Peart, the songwriter, says that the original lyrics by Pye Dubois were about a free-spirited rebel.
    Reconciling the boy and man
Peart added themes about reconciling the boy and man in himself.
The difference between perception and reality.
Peart also added themes about the difference between what people are and what others perceive them to be.
    The boy and man
Peart's original lyrics were based on the 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain, which has themes of independence. The novel's main message is about coming of age, as Tom's adventures push him into the adult world. Bye Ree! 🥰 Cheers!

It will blow your mind 3 people can make such music. I only saw them once, a million years ago, on the Hemispheres tour. There's an instrumental called La Villa Strangiato from that album I'd recommend. Glad you liked them. I started playing drums because of Neil. Their career spans many years and feels, experience them. Only 3 of them and made it sound like there were 7 and, they did it live too. They are one in their own.

I'm loving the reaction. And yeah, they will typically mix a lot of 7s in with straight stuff, but in this case, they keep it at 6's and just play with counter-rhythms within each pattern of 6. Led Zeppelin used to do this a lot.
And Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn and Becky and jim, there was a whole cast of characters that were immortalized for over a hundred years in this classic American literature thatvevery kid grew up reading in school. And discussing. Whole dissertations and phds have been done around this. Lots of music and pop movements kind of reinvent it now and then for significance.

Imminence with the song “Come What May.” It’s a Live Version at the Tstads Teater. They actually have a Live Video. Lead singer plays violin while singing and screaming. It’s kind of unheard of having violin in metalcore. It’s an emotional song.

They are a great band and its hard to believe its just the three. You're not mistaken, no other band can make time signature changes seem so natural. It is a hallmark of their music.

Rush is great, but the much greater discovery you made is researching "Tom Sawyer" and finding Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is a wonderful book, but I sincerely think everyone should read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom is a minor character in it); it truly is a literary masterpiece. Lyricist and drummer Neil Peart was an avid reader, which explains why his lyrics are never run of the mill.

Hi Rare,, from Australia. Mark Twain is considered one of (if not THE) greatest American novelists and two of his best known works are set in 1800's along the Mississippi river near where he (and I) grew up. - "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". Honestly, the books are must reading (IMO) but I don't think they'd really help understand the Rush song all that much. As far as Rush, I'd seen them in concert a number through the 70s and 80s. They were always amazing.

Tom Sawyer was a rascal, invented by Samual Clemons pseudonym (mark Twain. He wrote books about earl American life on the Mississippi river .Mark Twain is a riverboat term for depth of the water .. you have a rope with knots in it at a certain depth, and mark the distance as you go..) anyway he had great humor and adventure in his stories... Tom Sawyer, Hickleberry Finn, big Jim. River boats ,pirates pulling pranks on people getting trouble.....

I will always suggest Working Man from their debut album to get to see where the started. Not the Working Man time machine tour in Cleveland but the original album version. RUSH was an incredible band and I hope you enjoy your journey.

Concerning time signatures: this one is one of their simplest with few changes compared with, say, YYZ or 2112. This one is mostly a straight 4 beat meter (with an occasional extra beat or missing beat) then switches to a 7 beat, either 7/8 or alternating 4/4, 3/4.

I have seen Rush 3 times the first was summer time when I was 15 and Rush was not yet the global phenomenon they would become. Go look up tje absolutely mad bands that Rush influenced .. it is crazy. I saw you watching and i saw you get it so now get this . Niel Peart the drummer wrote the music and Alex (Guitar)knew exactly how to stitch it all together and he had to once you threw the rest of the percusion in with a signature rift ripping bass player with a voice crafted in purgatory. What a ffing RUSH. 3 times . Told you in have seen a lot of live music. Now my young Artist please go check out another young Artist. Angelina Jordan . Jazz Pop queen who has a voice that demands attention.
