We wanted to start an ongoing series - how to go from a brand new elk hunter to hopefully walking up to your first archery elk on the ground... and all the stuff you gotta do to be prepared... Clem has never elk hunted so we start this series off by getting his set-up proper with his archery equipment! Let us know if you want to see more from this mini-series. Thanks for watching! -DS
That’s maybe the best video I’ve watched. Props to you Dan for giving him a great setup. I really enjoyed seeing the smile on his face through the whole process. That’s what it’s all about!
Please do this kind of thing more I’m a new hunter and love seeing what someone would say to me. As I have no friends that hunt I have to watch videos.
As someone who had to figure this all out on my own over 2-3 yrs of the RUclips rabbit hole, this is a blessing for Clem. It’s gonna be cool to see his progress over the next several months.
This might be the best Elk Shape video. Having an actual beginner in front of you was great because you broke it down to him and answered a lot of questions I know a lot of us new hunters are asking when watching other videos.
Bro!!!! Awesome video and congrats on the new bow and on becoming a part of the Elk Shape team. Im here fletching some Rip Tko 250 elites with Max Hunters while watching the vid. Im excited for you.
This is going to be epic, I'm happy for Clem, good to see that how happy he is. And that bow means him a lot. I would be over the moon a s well. Have a good journey young man!! 🤘
Good morning, my wife, nephew and I got into archery hunting last year. With that being said we went to a box store bought bows thought we were good. We weren't. Lol. I found an archery shop close as i could to my house and went there to get dialed in, draw length, bow tune, anchor point, what arrows i should shoot. Well they tuned my bow, didnt check my draw length and built me some arrows. So when i went there i still felt like we didnt matter (took my nephew and wife with to get them dialed in also.). So i have been slowly trying to build me up a garage bow shop that i can do everything on my own. All of your videos help me in some way whether it be family fitness or bow hunting. I appreciate every video you drop, but this series is the best for my bow hunting cause my wife, nephew and i are still newbs at it!! Keep up the good work Dan!! Thanks again for everything!!
Yes. Bring up them new bow hunters the right way. Sharing everything you wish you knew elevates us all. Anyone can get good gear. Not everyone can surround themselves with good wisdom. This will be a great video series!
As someone new to Colorado hunting and trying to get into archery and transition from rifle...THANK YOU! Best subscribe of 2023...killing it with the content!
Really cool watching this . What a difference when you get a bow that is set up correctly.Draw length ,arrows Etc .My man Clem looked good there towards the end , gonna be a killing machine . I will definitely be watching more of this having never killed an Elk myself .Really great stuff Dan
I understand saving money on your first bow. Most of us started cheap but I always recommend going to an actual bow shop to get it set up for yourself. Bass pro and Cabela's or any of the big box stores generally don't have true archery experts and they'll set you up in a way that will just make hunting not enjoyable for you. I mean his draw length was way off, his quiver is mounted really low and he's got like 6 or 7 inches of arrow past his rest lol. Good job going to Dan for guidance Clem. That was a wise decision lol.
Good luck with your elk hunting clim your with the right people to learn about elk fitness and family there awesome congratulations on your bow hunting looking forward to see your adventures 🤘👍 As always keeping it real appreciate ya buddys ❤🙏👍
Well done Dan . I love the way you give and help people out if you can. You have a good heart bud was very kind of you. Keep up the great work. This is a great series
Great video, such an amazing opportunity for Clem. I'm going to be buying my first bow soon, I already had my mind set on a particular brand so I'm glad I watched this video beforehand. Looking forward to the rest of the series, I'm so jealous of Clem, good luck dude!
Blackout is made by Bear 🐻 Archery 🏹 for the Cabelas and Bass Pro stores. They sadly don’t dial you in like an archery 🏹 pro shop will. I noticed that he definitely was set up with a shorter draw length than he needed and he didn’t have a consistent anchor at least when it came to his nose 👃 on and off string. This is going to be an interesting series to follow. Dan you are such a great dude setting him up with your V3X from last year. I am in the same boat as Clem since I have never been elk hunting, but I don’t live in or near a state that has elk or at least where I can get a tag 🏷️ easily. I also was in a similar boat bow wise, I used a PSE Fire Flite 33 from 2006 until last year. I was able to find a slightly used previous year model PRIME Black 3 for $645. I then put a 5 pin Black Gold and a Hamskea Hunter drop away rest after years of using a whisker biscuit. So there’s a good tip for those who have a tighter budget. Look in pro shops that may take trade in older flagship models that are a couple years old and save money that way or find one on EBay or forums. Or work with a very generous guy who just has some Mathew’s hanging around like Clem was fortunate to do. Hopefully Clem has a subscription to the Elk Collective for times when he is not around Dan. Good luck 🍀 Clem I am cheering for you 😃🏹
Honestly. Im probably going to replay the last part of this video on my next trip to the archery range. Im using a bow you probably would consider trash but I really want to improve my shooting this year. Good stuff.
This series is gonna be so cool. Can't lie though. I am just a little jealous. Lol. I'm rooting for you Clem. You're in good company. I have no doubts that you'll have an elk on the ground before years end. Have fun.
Wow, this was unbelievably helpful and I really appreciate you taking the time to help us newbies learn properly! Can't wait to follow this series and hopefully get my first elk also in the near future!
I have been bow hunting elk for over forty years. The equipment advice here is excellent. The only criticism I would offer is the comments about distance. I hear it from many different people. They talk about shooting eighty yards and more. I have not EVER SHOT AT ELK PAST FORTY YARDS. The object is GETTING CLOSE. ARCHERY. I just cringe when hearing instructors advising these distances.
the blackout intrigue is made by bowtech typically sold through pro bass shops. blackout bows are made by both diamond and bear companies i think the intrigue is made by diamond bows where the intrigue ss,epic and persuit is made by bear i think. and draw length also can make is super hard to draw the bow back .. my dads draw length was out by almost an inch he struggled to draw that bow every time until i measured and change his bows draw length and it changed and became soo much smoother and easier to draw for him . one thing i would recomend to new archery shooters is placing your trigger finger the one you would use to pull the trigger back on your release to place the flat part behind the trigger you don't have to place it hard against it but to brace it slightly behind it to help make sure it wouldn't misfire or have you finger accidentally tap it and misfire.
Not going to lie you guys slow played him already notching a tag 😂😎 was not expecting that with the bow he pulled out! If he can do that imagine the possibilities with a true fitting matthews and awesome coaches!! As a gear nerd I love to see when people take the step up in gear+coaching and everything clicks like “oh that’s how it’s supposed to feel”! 👍🏼
Outstanding Job! always giving back kudos to both you and JJ i only wish I had someone back in the day to mentor me . Your content is top notch. even better now that the channel is lighter with the dead weight you were carrying has removed it's self aka stay puff.
Great video! I was curious about him using his middle finger on the release. Is that just personal preference or is there a specific reason behind using the middle finger instead of the pointer?
I would love to be a guest and do this with you! I would pay for all of my own stuff but would love to get your expertise due to being a south hunter and new bow hunter. Awesome video.
I own and operate a pro shop in Southern Utah, and I see what happened at the beginning of this video all too often. Someone purchases a bow from a box store, and also in my case another "pro shop", and the employees either don't have the knowledge to get the customer set up properly, and often give them incorrect information (both of which happened to Clem), or the employee does have the knowledge, but doesn't spend the time with the customer to get them started correctly. I also get customers come in that are often embarassed by their starter/ beginner bow, stemming from someone making them feel inferior, because they're not shooting top of the line equipment. This should never happen! A large percentage of archers do not have the budget to be able to afford top of the line equipment. Those of us in the archery community with the knowledge and experience should welcome these people with open arms, saying welcome to archery! We should do what we can to help them improve and develop their skills, not belittle them. Dan, Kudos to you on this video. I honestly don't think I have ever watched a video, from an influencer, that focused on someone that was still very new to archery, that doesn't/didn't have premium equipment. Clem ended up with premium equipment, which won't always happen, but you also showed him getting excellent coaching as well, and I believe that was very important. If more influencers would help people realize that it's okay to have a bow/equipment that isn't top of the line and that you are just happy that they are there, then this industry and sport would have so much growth. Good job
I feel like the bow choice was kinda rigged but I like the video I am starting my venture in bow hunting and I would love a Matthew's or hoyt but that is not in my budget but I don't want a cheap bow that I will out grow or not like cause that will just be wasted money and I will just want a nicer one anyway so I don't know what I am going to do lol
Would have loved to see him blind folded from the start and shooting . Uninfluenced by the love of Mathews. Zero against Mathew’s I can’t afford it and shoot a Bowtech but I know people’s influence comes into fact regardless of how little it’s put forth.
CRUNCHING UP HIS BODY AGAIN AT THE END OF THE VIDEO! FRONT ARM NOT EXTENDED AND STRING ON SIDE OF THE NOSE INSTEAD OF THE TIP! BUT, HEY! WHAT DO I KNOW! LOL

This is bad ass, and really speaks for your character Dan. Keep it up.
Please do this kind of thing more I’m a new hunter and love seeing what someone would say to me. As I have no friends that hunt I have to watch videos.
Awesome video!
As someone who had to figure this all out on my own over 2-3 yrs of the RUclips rabbit hole, this is a blessing for Clem. It’s gonna be cool to see his progress over the next several months.
Ditto
Got to love this kid’s enthusiasm
He's got a lot of stoke! It's contagious! -DS
This might be the best Elk Shape video. Having an actual beginner in front of you was great because you broke it down to him and answered a lot of questions I know a lot of us new hunters are asking when watching other videos.

Way to go, Dan, that's super generous of you. Bringing more people into hunting is awesome, and good mentorship is huge.

I went through ths earlier this year and I loved the Hoyts myself. Im trying to save up the money on my 1st Hoyt.
Yes. Bring up them new bow hunters the right way. Sharing everything you wish you knew elevates us all. Anyone can get good gear. Not everyone can surround themselves with good wisdom. This will be a great video series!

Love this series already. EVERYONE started with this exact same set up.
I understand saving money on your first bow. Most of us started cheap but I always recommend going to an actual bow shop to get it set up for yourself. Good man yourself, Dan 👍👍 good luck and good hunting for the forthcoming season, Clem
This is gonna be a great series. I can’t wait to see what Dan has planned for him in the gym!!!
One thing I saw. Looks like his release might be too long. Dan that’s awesome of you for helping him out and hooking him up with the bow
I think a lot of NEWBS get set-up all wrong... I know I did 20+ years ago and it can make a world of difference to get some proper mentorship! -DS
I have been shooting for 40+ years. This video was great. Keep it up guys.
I love this series!
The fundamentals he's being coached on is gold!
I’ve been Bow hunting 20 years. I really enjoyed this😁👍🇺🇸🏹
Man.. I was hoping for some elk hunting.... but this was so much better! Process=Progress. never let anyone think elk hunting is easy.
man, we need more generous people like you! was great to see the progress already from mr Shady, cant wait to see how much he progresses!!
Good luck with your elk hunting clim your with the right people to learn about elk fitness and family there awesome congratulations on your bow hunting looking forward to see your adventures 🤘👍 As always keeping it real appreciate ya buddys ❤🙏👍

Glad you enjoy it!
Good on ya for hooking him up with a bow

Same bow I started out with 2 years ago. I enjoyed using it on my first successful, but no animal, hunt.
GREAT SERIES !! Would have loved this kind of guidance when I got started
Thanks man! -DS
This video series is awesome and I love it. Can’t wait for more videos to come!!!
V3X 29 is my go to bow. I just love it. Not my tools from MFJJ and do all my own repairs.
Content waterfall Dan-O! Looking forward to it!
Honestly. Im probably going to replay the last part of this video on my next trip to the archery range. Im using a bow you probably would consider trash but I really want to improve my shooting this year. Good stuff.

Gotcha.. right on
good on you for helping Clem and a great lesson for those learning as well as all of us that learned the wrong way years ago. Lol

Bass Pro/ Cabelas bow. They are usually made by one of 3 companies Diamond, Obsession, Bear.
Good for this guy, I'd love to have a knowledgeable group to party up with. Good stuff.

Great video! I was curious about him using his middle finger on the release. Is that just personal preference or is there a specific reason behind using the middle finger instead of the pointer?
I like this. Make more.
I have the same bow and I really like it
What a deer to get year one. Mine was a doe but still was incredibly hard to get.
I would love to be a guest and do this with you! I would pay for all of my own stuff but would love to get your expertise due to being a south hunter and new bow hunter. Awesome video.
This is awesome! Great content.
Thanks for watching -DS
Awesome video, and i feel the Self taught problems to this day. No decent trainers/pros near me.
I like it!. Are you planning on doing the same with all the necessary gear? Boots, pack, broadheads, clothing, ect?
Yup - next up, Clem has never backpacked and camped in the mountains - time to change that! -DS
Hate to see him go. Gotta want it!
Ya I’m still bummed about it but I respect his decision.
Dan looks like he was ready to slap him as a joke if he chose a hoyt lol but still good stuff. Good on ya for helping him out
Blackout was made by bowtech for bass pro but now it's by bear archery.
Nice deer clem
Catch wait for the MFJJ destruction bow test...
Are those white side plates going to be back in stock?
Yes! Always in order!
Clem. U are one lucky guy haha.
Well shit I'm out here in Utah and I have never hunted! You wanna come down here and hunt with me LOL
I wish he gave me a bow 😂😂

Forget basketball during P.E we need the meats 🥩..pac12🦌
I’m new to learning archery, would it make you happy to give me a bow? 😅 21:36
Wasn’t supposed he picked the phase 4 low mine!!!!

Some people have all the luck
