Hi Fran, the smell is very strong. Usually a good and strog essential oil should mask the smell. If it hasn't then use a fragrance oil, just a little should do the job. Let me know if it helps. :-)

The earthy smell really can't be avoided completely, but you can use a fragrance oil such as vanilla or any one you like to help mask the smell.

Do you mean peppermint essential oil? There is peppermint essential oil in the recipe. However, you can omit it, if you don’t have it.

You don't have to use castor oil. You can use any other oil. Rice bran or corn oil is another good options.
