- There’s no denying that Michael Jordan is one of the greatest basketball players of all time. He did things on the court that almost seemed impossible for the common player.
But have you ever wondered if Jordan’s talent was passed on to his children? Michael has two sons, and both of them played basketball extensively, but neither of them reached the pinnacle of basketball. But why exactly did Jordan’s sons never make the NBA?

They didn't suck. People just underestimate how much it takes to get to the NBA level, and how much it takes to then survive at the NBA, and how much it takes to then become a starter, an all-star, and then a legend. MJ was basically a winning lottery ticket. He was much taller than his father or his brother, and him becoming great had a lot with his environment. Absolute zero chance of his sons ever getting the same amount of drive, and skills to do what his dad did.

They both were extremely skilled high school players that were able to go on and play in college. They didn't suck. Very few accomplish what they did in high school.

They had just enough natural talent to go play D1 at a high level which not a lot of people can say they did but they didn't have that "dog" MJ had to push them to the next level and beyond. They have a hell of a safety net, no matter how their careers panned out at the end of the day they're the sons of an NBA great who's also a billionaire, can't lose in that situation lol.

I agree about the safety net. Outside looking in we all think it’s genetics and talent but with Jordan for a Dad, the work ethic is just not going to be there. Being poor was one of Jordan’s inspirations. His kids were born rich, major difference. Not saying they want be great at something else.

Let’s also look at how many poor basketball players are in the world that don’t make it to the NBA. NBA is a mixture of different backgrounds. Work ethic comes from discipline . Some poor people have it and some don’t. Same with rich. Millions of kids are competing for a small slot.

I can tell you never saw Marcus Jordan play. He was actually a really good player. He was all conference second team as a sophomore. He averaged above 15 points per game in conference USA. You have to love basketball to be rich and want to grind and play. He had fringe NBA/ high level overseas talent.

Playing D1 College Basketball makes you a top 1% player. Being in the NBA makes you top 400 in the world. It's insanely difficult to make it. They did well in hoops.

They didn’t suck, and skill isn’t inherited. They were lucky to be athletic, they were doomed to failure as far a bball was concerned, but they have great lives. In the last 25 years there have only been two other players in the WORLD compared to him. Kobe and lebron. If they enjoyed the game that’s all that matters

My father is an electrician but I know nothing about electronics.
The margins are just so small at the highest level. What I mean is: you can be top 2% in the world at a sport and you would look like you sucked compared to any professional. Even many in the top 1% would look like they sucked compared to greats like MJ. His sons don't suck, it's just really hard and rare to be that good.

Michael Jordan is an enigma in his family. His parents and brothers and sons were never nearly as tall as he was...the tallest was like 5" shorter. They also dint have his giant hands, leaping ability or speed. Its like Jordan took all those physical attributes by himself. And his competitiveness was unmatched and not very heritable.
He did have a cousin who was 6’7. Apples don’t fall far from their trees.
Have you seen his bother Larry dunk? At 5’8, he was quite athletic. I wouldn’t imagine what would happened if Larry grew to 6’5.

I played at a camp with one there a long time ago... He was there too. Excellent games.
Talent isn't genetic. The reason so many sons of basketball players get to where they do at all is they have access to things most children do not: an NBA playing father, his friends, etc.
Talent is honestly just an accident. And quite often I think a lot of it as to do with environment. It's randomness. Your brain reacts to your environment in just the right ways to push you. Being athletic isn't going to get you far when everyone you're playing against are also some of the best athletes in the world.
These guys made it on a college roster. 99% of basketball players don't make it to the NBA. We won back to back titles in High School & our two best players were ranked in the top 100 in the country. Neither of them even came close to playing in the NBA.
DeAndre "The Mosquito" Bray went on to have a successful semi-pro & international career, then later signed with Ball Up Basketball. Rashad Chase went on to play college basketball at GA State, then didn't do much after that. I walked on to West GA & was way outta my league.
Jordan was 1 of 1. There will never be another Michael Jordan. The fact is they did something that even most HS basketball players couldn't accomplish.
I'm not expert but if I just look at them, they are not as tall as Michael nor do they have the wing span, which are two important metrics for NBA.
So they did not inherit all their genes from their dad, they got some from mom's side.
They were built more for baseball, soccer, football. I'm surprised Michael didn't push them into baseball since he also loved that sport.

The vast majority of superstar athlete's children do not follow their parents into sports. In fact, I think most athletes prefer it that way. They play the sport so that their children will have many more opportunities in life than they did. They obviously didn't have the drive their father had, and that's fine. They appear to be good young men and I'm sure they will find success without dribbling a basketball
Nah I bet they’d be over the moon if their sons were great too. It’s just not as common for ppl from rich backgrounds to do hard things. Not saying it’s impossible but it’s a lot easier to move onto other easier opportunities than grinding to death trying to be the best at whatever

That's a fine sentiment, but I think believing in it is whishful thinking.
Athletes don't play their sport for their children ( they have to seriously start practicing at around age 12, when they haven't even hit puberty yet. So children is the last thing they think about when choosing to try it in sports. ), they play their sport for the recognition, the applause and the money. And last, but not least because it's fun to them and they have given their youth to the game.
And when we literally just heard about one of them being an assaulter, why do they exactly appear to be good young men? I do not quite understand that leap of logic.
They, to me, seem like privileged men who haven't achieved one goal, so they pivoted to another and with the privilege of their name were able to land jobs in something like the Nike middle management. Most probably taking the job away from someone who is more skilled in 'business' than anyone who played basketball for the last 15 years, every day for hours, could ever be.
I don't think athletes play sports so their families don't have to. That doesn't even make sense.
People have to understand going to the NBA is such an anomaly. Just because your father went, doesn’t mean you’ll go. Even through nepotism it’s extremely rare for the children to inherit the same talent at a professional level. These men’s are their own men with their own paths. It’s unfair to compare them.
Michael Jordan’s sons were excellent basketball players. The fact that they were not so good as to be in the the NBA (the top 300 in the entire world) does not need to be explained. It is extremely hard to reach the NBA. I’d like to see the guy who made this video on a basketball court.
jordan had a different type of work ethic, his kids aren't just gonna naturally have that and he can't really force it on them. expecting the kids of greats to be as great as their predecessor while being in a much better place than they were at the time is silly.

So many scenarios I came up with pertaining to Marcus.
Two of the schools that recruited him, ASU & Butler, were prominent at the time. ASU just had James Harden go #3 in the 2009 draft and could’ve developed Marcus (along with Jeffrey once he transferred) how they did James. Butler literally went back to back as runner ups for the national championship. Might’ve been coming off the bench as a freshman, but would’ve served better as a sophomore (Jeff would’ve been there, too).
Had he gone pro in 2011, he would’ve gotten some good scouting reports of his development. I know his father would’ve taken him and put him in a position to succeed. Nepotism aside, he would’ve had an alley oop in life, but he had to have worked for it.

Probably just comes down to drive. "He would’ve had an alley oop in life, but he had to have worked for it."... he has an alley oop already, and at his size/skill level, the NBA would have been incredibly hard, demanding physical and mental work. I'm not saying he's being "lazy" or anything, but running and foundation and having some business interests isn't the same as playing at the highest competitive level in a professional sport. It's ok not to want to devote your life to that. MJ had it in him, many people don't.
Marcus prolly could’ve been a 2nd round pick if he kept playing, he really was a good play maker and was improving every year in college.
It’s simple, we act as if sons of great men or women in history will magically gain their abilities when really it’s about having the hunger and drive to pursue your goals which makes someone great. Who your parents are have very little to do with it (to not say “nothing”)
I think this proves that what made MJ so great wasn't just his genes but his drive, tenacity, and will. The work he put in day in and day out far outweighs what god-given genes and talent he and his sons inherited

First of all, they weren't born with MJ's freakish physical gifts - 6'6" and giant hands.
They didn’t need to be NBA players. Their father is also a successful businessman. If they want to follow in his footsteps they have no time limit to do it that way instead.
I’ve played against professional NBA players and it’s a totally different ballgame frfr. It’s not easy at all to make that level of talent. I lost a 1v1 to Donald Whiteside. 0-11. He didn’t miss one shot, all 3’s in my face. And I’m a defender.
It's a roll of the dice. Dell Curry had Steph Curry and he wound up being better than his dad ever was. MJ's two sons weren't that tall but Marcus had a decent game that would've been good enough to get him drafted. It was all up to him and he changed his mind and wanted a non-sports career.

I believe Jordan's sons did all that was within their powers to become the best basketball players they could be. As far as the NBA is concerned I'm sure they made the decision not to pursue playing in the NBA not because they couldn't get a shot but because they knew that they simply didn't have enough star power to compete at that level. I'm sure Jordan had his son's at all the camps playing with the best prospects from highschool every year to see if they really had what it took to compete and I'm sure they found out a lot of things about the type of talent and skillsets needed to become an NBA player from playing against guys like LeBron James for example. It's no need to lie to yourself and simply take a free ticket to the NBA because of who your dad is if you know in your heart you didn't earn it because you're not the best basketball player for the job. It's no need to risk the embarrassment either of the Jordan brand name. The bottom line is either you have the ability to compete at the necessary high level needed or you can't and if you can't then the best thing to do is to simply leave it alone and continue being a fan of the sport and that's the honest truth.👍😎👌
Also if you have a father's trust fund to fall back on, there's less hunger for money. Just a simple fact, no blame being cast, I'd do (and have done when I inherited a ton of money from a childless relative) the same thing.

They were good players in high school and obviously well-schooled in the game of basketball. Their basketball IQ was very strong. Marcus had the right skills and play to get to the NBA, but maybe between his school choice (UCF) and his size (6'2), he was facing a real uphill battle. Fair or not, if he were his dad's size, it probably would have helped grease the wheels a bit.
Would he have been as good as or better than his dad even with that? Well, no, but... you don't get many of those to begin with if they're an all-timer or hall of famer. Only modern comparison I can think of right now in any of the big four is Vladimir Guerrero and his son Vlad Jr. Dad's a HOF and one of the best right-handed hitters in the last 30 years. His son, health permitting, is on pace to be better than him, which is pretty damn amazing.

Marcus had the stats to be considered for the NBA (15.2 ppg as a soph and 13.7 ppg as a junior) but he needed to work on his shooting. He shot only 40% as a soph and 37% as a junior.

In comparison to their dad, they didn’t have the killer instinct their dad had to make it all the way to the NBA. They had the talent and skill. They showed bits and pieces of their dad’s game individually. Not many guys can say they played ball in high school and then went on to play ball in college. That is an accomplishment in and of itself. They didn’t necessarily suck. They just didn’t have the same competitive drive to really take their games over the top like their dad did. Jordan was a hyper competitive NBA legend who hated to lose more than he loved to win and that’s part of what made him the player that he was. Neither of his sons seem to have possessed that trait.

Marcus could have had a path to the league had he maintained his trajectory. Could’ve been a solid role player but when you’re not at least 6’5” you need to shoot lights out or completely stop the other teams best player to make it as a role player. Who knows why he stopped.

Jeff was a D2 player at best, but Marcus was legit talented and actually played really well at UCF.
Was a UCF season ticket holder during Marcus's time. Really great player that was fun to watch. Definitely thought he was on the border of NBA material. Wasn't the most efficient player with a decent bit of turnovers, but I was surprised to see him disappear, as UCF was slated to still have a really good team (although a small step down) for his senior year.
UCF would’ve been solid if he played but they were sanctioned at around that time due to an ineligible player so not much he could’ve done there with the postseason ban.

Because they didnt have the Mikes length and athleticism and huge hands ( probably the biggest hand size to height ratio in history of the NBA ).People tend to forget that up untill his huge growth spurt Mike was far away from being a top basketball prospect on a highschool level.

After reuniting with his long lost father who denies having a son, Popeye lists things they both have in common including the same corn cob pipe. Popeye’s father tells him “Ya can’t inherit a pipe!”
Basically you can’t inherit professional sports skills. Jordan’s sons were not born with a basketball in their hands. They were pushed into playing because that’s what was expected of them.
Quite interesting the way in which the genes of the Jordan family works, the physical and athletic characteristics of Jordan, are present in his family yet, they're an event that rarely occurs, like MJ's cousin who was around 6'7. Jordan's huge hands and athleticism are also shared by some of his relatives, I think it's extremely likely they the Jordan family eventually produces a good physical and mental player by hit, like spontaneously.
Sometimes, the elite physical genes don't get passed on to these superstar athletes children. We've seen this with many, many other legendary athletes' kids. So for MJ's kids to not reach the levels he did is no knock on them. There's alot of unwarranted pressure put on them. They clearly were not NBA-level talent. I'm sure deep down Michael was disappointed but he's won in every facet of life so he can keep his head high.

Its mad related ballers, parents, uncles, aunts, cousins, siblings, etc, but very few have more than one elite player in the family, especially the father/grandfather - son/grandson dynamic.
If the older person is dominant the younger usually isn't and the younger ones that come heavy are generally way better than their relatives and we almost never see siblings do well together. Best I can think of off the top of the dome is Vince Carter and Tmac but they never really achieved their potential due to injuries and other issues so it's not the same as something like if Kobe's pops had also been an all-time great or a couple of brothers got to the level of a Dwayne Wade or whatever.
Imagine if Jordan had a kid with 1 of those old WNBA stars those kids would be insane

Main thing is they lacked the height/length and also probably didn’t have the drive to overcome their limitations. They played division 1 basketball, so they didn’t “suck” in any absolute sense, just weren’t NBA players and had limited chances to be.
Being competitive and putting in the work are two different things, the movie Space Jam at the very beginning when you see young Michael Jordan shooting over and over again, that's real Mike he put in the effort to a level that no one ever has, his kids did not

IIRC, there was some sneaker drama at UCF for Marcus as UCF was an adidas school at the time and Marcus wore Nike, which he was told he could do. UCF lost its adidas deal as a result & switched to Nike. However, Nike had so much leverage during negotiations, since UCF had to switch apparel companies, they got a basic b*tch Nike deal.

Jordan was never a good teacher if he had “authority” over you. We get it now: Kwame Brown wasn’t a “bust” because he had no talent; he simply wasn’t taught in a way that made any damn sense. Kobe wasn’t taught by MJ in the same sense. They were competitors and one was older and more established, but Kobe didn’t have to “cooperate” with MJ in any way.

Everything I've observed shows that specific genetics/talent and traits skip a generation. I see this in my family. I've seen this same trend in other families. If those two have children, it will be interesting to see what happens if they get them into basketball.
