    U2 performs the song with this choir at Madison Square Garden on the version of this on the Rattle & Hum album. So bass, drums, guitar, and all those voices together. Awesome! The first time I saw U2 in concert was in San Francisco in 1984 on their Unforgettable Fire tour. I'll never forget that Bono sang Amazing Grace in the middle of their song MLK -- and the entire concert hall lit up with people holding up cigarette lighters. That was before doing that became a cliche.

      Mike, I am full of envy. I would have really enjoyed Bono singing Amazing Grace during their MLK song.

      @@iampeterpink Pedro, I can not thank you enough for your comments and especially for the link. I received an email as soon as it was posted here but just got to watch ...no, absorb the experience three times before writing this. The cross-cultural performers and gospel choir were fascinating and beautiful. The gospel choir's singing of Amazing Grace was so spiritual and riveting an experience. I have felt that only one other time. I was present at an Aretha Franklin concert, where she sang Amazing Grace.
      This was awesome, and thanks again. - Dave

    Recorded at The Greater Calvary Church, in Harlem. The choir absolutely takes this song to the next level. Their upbeat spirit of their united voices blended with U2's great instrumentation completes this song into a masterpiece. Love it.

And you are right Harri, the choir along with the full band playing this song live was/is amazing!! This song has great spiritual significance. I love the part when all the colors will blend into one. It's all the individual things, all the long-suffering and loads we carry. Like finally one day it will all make sense. I love this gospel song because it wasn't hidden in a church. No, it was out in the open like Jesus was out in the open. I respect that greatly.

    Interesting fact: The old building you see the Edge sitting in at the start of the video and throughout the Rattle & Hum album is an old train station in the docklands that serviced the Dublin Port and called the Point Depot in Dublin which after this was developed into 1 of the most famous concert venues in Dublin, the Point Theatre before again being redeveloped into the O2 arena.

    I saw The Joshua. Tree tour, many times in the sports' arenas, then at the football stadium. The reason Bono is wearing a sling is that he slept on a rainy stage and dislocated his shoulder. When U2 came to the football stadium, he was still wearing it. He did an amazing job acapella singing this song, with the whole stadium sang along. Just amazing!
    They also had the best opening band: The Beatles. The stadium's PA just blasted their songs and everyone there just screamed out the lyrics. It totally brought the place together, making everyone ripe for U2's entrance. What a night!!!

    This wasn't a recent video; you can see looking at Bono's age this must have been right about the time the Joshua Tree album came out, so it didn't take him long to come onboard to making it a spiritual song. Bono has always been a spiritual man.

    I just paused at the part where you said I the band had done this song with the choir "properly" it would have been amazing. Of course I'm not the first to tell you that they did, but let me quick tell you about the first time I heard it.
    It was 1988. I was driving. And I had to pull over! I was so c9mpletely floored by the power of that version on Rattle & Hum, in MSG, that I had to stop EVERYTHING... and just listen.

    This song is essentially Celtic music done in a gospel style...to label it 'gospel' is really a form of cultural appropriation because it will automatically be assumed that it is a product of American culture. Further, the assumption that by doing the song in a Gospel style it is elevated above the original is merely cultural imperialism because Gospel isn't intrinsically superior to Celtic music. In fact Gospel itself has roots in Scottish culture both in the religious format and the Gaelic Psalms of the Hebrides.

    Not released you never reacted to U2. If you will follow with this "spirit" - e.g. in the Christmas time - react to Angel Of Harem (tribute to thefantastic Billie Holiday) and When Love Comes To Town with the genious B.B.King - perhaps both from the film Rattle And Hum,
    One - the official video or/and the version with Mary J..Blidge (from time to time I love it, but for me a little bit "art for art sake");
    I'm sure Mary blows you awayI
    Only a few chronological U2 songs:
    New Year's Day / Live Red Rocks 1983;
    The Unforgettable Fire + Pride (In The Name Of Love; tribute to Martin Luther King) / official video or Live from Rattle And Hum;
    Sunday Bloody Sunday + Bad / Live Aid 1985 - both so epic and you will be estonished;
    With Or Without You and the original I Still Haven't .... - both nr.1 in US / official video or Live R&H;
    Bullet The Blue Sky + Running To Stand Still as a song package / Live Paris 1985 or R&H.
    U2 is absolutely one of the biggest live band; all upper song have deep lyrics and are musically so different.
    Finally a great compliment I have overlooked and only now discovered your reactions of the songs ELP (so positiv confused as a child), one of my favorite band in the 70ties along with Pink Floyd, Genesis (with Peter+Steve), Yes, Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple ... and of course Stevie Wonder (genious albums Innervision+Songs In The Key Of Life) and Bob Marley. All the best TO YOU!!!
