This was amazing I have been dehydrating frozen vegetables I am having so much fun . I've been canning peaches, pears, milk, beans spaghetti sauce I have run out of jars. I canned a lot when I had my family I am 81 and am hooked on RUclips and will have at least a yrs food put up . You did a great job
Thank you and you are rocking it!!
That’s fabulous that your still at it. I’m 62 and thinking of giving classes to women at my church. So many who don’t know the joys of putting up.
Uline has 24 Oz jars for just over $1 each.
You are what I inspire to be!
Us younger gals can learn a thing or two from you … in 61 😂😂😂
How in the world did someone put a thumb down on this video. That person must hate potatoes, and hate the most PERFECT WAY to make instant potatoes out of the 10,000 we have out in the garden right now! Been looking for something just like this. Thank you.
We love you. ❤️
Thank you! Someone a bit grumpy, I guess 😏. Thanks for the kind words. Note: the thinner you spread them, the better they flake. Rehydrating is about 1 part flakes and two parts water/milk, depending on the kind of potato and how thin they were at dehydration. Blessings!
Northstar Prepsteader thank you I can’t wait to do this. We planted extra potatoes this year and we could supply North America with what ended up growing, so THIS is going to be just perfect!
@@JHobartMusic72 haha! glad you have an abundance!
Northstar Prepsteader So after watching the video and seeing the entire process, what would you suggest for red potatoes, apparently that’s what we have 450 million of, red potatoes
@@JHobartMusic72 haha, wow! Well, according to google and the people therein, Yukon golds are the best for mashing, then flaking. Reds are more of a waxy potato, lower in starch and can get really "pasty" when mashing. They are best roasted & fried. However, you can shred them (food processor grate), and either freeze them for hash browns, or dehydrate them for rehydrated hash browns, adding to soups/stews/casseroles, making potato flour for baked goods, pancakes, etc. Here's a site that might help: seedtopantryschool.com/dehydrating-potatoes-plus-secret-revealed/
try rolling the potato out under wax or parchment paper, freeze them the remove paper and dehydrate.. I did that with my daughters baby food years ago and it worked great !
Great idea! Thank you!
Two thumbs up for the kind lady! Thanks for taking the time to teach me how to make these!
You’re welcome!
An EXCELLENT video, better than many that are professionally made. Even the low-volume background music wasn't irritating, as most are. I have stage 3 kidney disease and can only eat mashed potatoes if they are double boiled, throwing out the water each time to get rid of the harmful stuff that damages kidneys, and later could force me on dialysis for life. This way I can pre-prepare mashed potatoes that will not over-stress the kidneys. I am 90 years old and had a near-fatal heart attack resulting in massive damage and a 5 part bypass. Your vid might have bought me an extra year or two. Thank you so much.
Oh wow!! Thank you so much and I pray you get that extra year! God bless!
😂😂😂 I love it, my mom had a pot, that size, with no handle! Used to ask her, many times, why do you use it? Her reply was I like it! Now that she's passed away, I'm using the same pot!!😂❤
That’s awesome!
Thank you great video . Pro tip: drain them and toss em in a colander immediately after taking them off the heat, the steam from tossing will evaporate the water faster . Mash while hot your potatoes will be smoother faster .
Thanks much!!
I’m loving the jazzy music!!! Relaxing!
Thank you so much!
I made instant mashed sweet potatoes last fall. I baked, squeezed sweet potatoes out of their skins and flattened out on silicone trays to dehydrate. Once done I broke up in pieces that could be ground up in my blender. It worked great. I'll have to try your way now.
That's sounds great, too!
Hi Northstar Prepsteader. I know it's been a few years since you uploaded this video but, perhaps you'll get a notification of a new post.
I also vacuum seal my dehydrated goods. I do have a vacuum sealer but, I have also bought a "break bleeder", (found cheap in most automotive stores) which is an contraption that is used when airing the breaks on your car/truck when replacing the break fluid. However, that thing works VERY good at sucking the air out of jars the same/similar way an electric vacuum sealer does, just without the electricity since it is hand pumped. (up to around 15lbs of pump pressure, which you can see on the gauge connected to the break bleeder) You'll still need to use the plastic lid that you use along with the electric vacuum sealer but, one of the several nozzles included in the break bleeder box, fits the hole in the lid. I've seen it when I've watched Rain Country's RUclips channel and seen her demonstrate the break bleeder technique several times and, figured that if/when the power goes out, I'd still be able to vacuum seal my dehydrated foods. I have tried it several times when I've been to lazy to dig out my electric sealer and it works just as good as the electric one.
What I also like about vacuum sealing my dry goods jars is that you can successfully use used lids. As long as they're not bent out of shape or damaged somehow. They don't have to go through the whole hot process in either water bath canning or pressure canning and hold the seals just as good as new lids. I've had stored for up to 2 years so far, without loosing a seal on a dehydrated jar.
Thank you for a great tutorial on dehydrating mashed potato flakes! 🙏
Thank you for all your information. I am aware of the brake bleeder and hope to get one some day, and I do use good used lids for dried goods. Thanks again for watching my videos!!!

This video was made before I even knew there were such videos! Glad I looked back and found out how to dehydrate potatoes!!
Wonderful! So glad!
Great video! One tip for you. Take a coffee filter and cut a round out to put inside your attachment. It will prevent powders from being sucked up into your machine.
I've heard that recently; thanks for the great tip!
Great video. I've seen a lot of people explain how if you slice your raw potatoes and dehydrate them they turn a very ugly black, because of the excess starch and you need to steam them or cook them to get rid of the excess starch. This was a great video. Thank you for posting it and not telling us all how Jesus is our savior etc. When I watch people cook or prepare food, I don't feel I need to be preached to, unless you want to preach about how wonderful the meal tastes and how much money I saved. I recently bought a bunch of commercially prepared dried foods, I purchased 'Mac & Cheese powder - the yellow powdered cheese', onions flakes, sour cream, butter, honey. I have to wash out my mason jars and vacuum the air out of them for long term storage and also to parcel them up and the containers are kind of large. Especially the butter. It seems I go from having plenty of butter to having none, just when I need some, so I thought, even if the butter is a little weird from being powdered and rehydrated, in cooking it won't make a bit of difference, or even spread on toast under jelly or preserves.
Thanks.
Thanks for sharing this info! I am getting a dehydrator and a pressure canner real soon and have never used either but I figured it is time to learn!
You're welcome! Awesome!! It's a learning curve but SO worth it :)
Finely found the perfect and easy well explained potato flake video , you got yourself a new subscriber , you also seemed like a very sweet lady the kind anyone would love to have as a neighbor ...thank you .
Oh, you’re so kind...thank you!! Glad to have you here.
Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for providing the rehydration ratio. THANKS !
You're welcome!
That pot handed down is a treasure.
Yes 😊
I grew a ton of potatoes this year and trying to preserve them. I bought a dehydrator so this is helpful b/c Im feeling clueless. :-) Thx
Awesome! I know how hard it is to be learning new things.
Those vintage pots are precious. I have some utensils that are hand me downs and I love them!!!
Aren't they fun?!!
Interesting process... watching this, I was wondering how putting the potatoes through a potato ricer might work out, instead of beating them. I started using a ricer in lieu of whipping mashed potatoes a few years ago and like the condistency. Well, this gave me the idea to try that. Thanks!
There’s always many ways to try!
I will give the ricer a try. I think it will be easier.. thanks for sharing
Well done thank you for sharing! A great way to store and save space.
Thank you
Thank you for such a great video. I live in Ontario Canada. I can only find potato flakes with chemicals in them at one place. This is fantastic.
Awesome! Thank you.
That's amazing how much space it saves dehydrating, thanks for sharing, I enjoyed and learned something, God bless !
Thanks!!
Loved your video! I’ve been wanting to try this for a while. After watching your video I now feel confident enough to try!
Awesome!!! Thanks 😊
I'm new to dehydrating and this video was VERY helpful........helpful and humble......God bless you too!
Thanks!
This would be awesome to add to soups!!
So true! Great idea!
Very nice an informative review.I never tried this method but will follow your directions. Thanks for sharing
You’re very welcome!
Good idea to take out the silicone sheets when you could. So obvious, yet I'm not sure I would have thought of it in the moment. 😊💚💚
Thanks!!
Thank you Cathy for walking me through that. I have both the dehydrator and sealing attachment and haven't used the sealer yet. Now I definitely will.
Wonderful!!
Great video! For some reason I never thought of doing this, but this would be great for us! Lee uses instant potatoes a lot. Thanks!
Thanks! Awesome 😊
Great idea!
I posted the name of your video because I had so much interest when I posted my results. You’ll likely get lots of traffic because of it. Thank you for your great video! Congratulations!
Awesome! Thank you 😊
Very interesting. I have a new Casori and am just learning to dehydrate. Thanks for clear instructions. I’ve subbed! 💕
Thank you so much! Enjoy the dehydrating world!
Awesome video!! Just what I was looking for!! Thank you! 😊
You're so welcome!
Wow! I have a vacuum sealer from the same brand and didn't even know you could do this. Amazingly done!!
Yes! The jar sealing attachment is available at a number of stores.
@@northstarprepsteader thanks for sharing
great video Kathy, i'm drying some potatoes myself today (solar dryer home made)....it's nice to see the mashed potatoes ! thanks
Thank you!!
Wow! I’m so excited to learn this technique! Thank you!!
Awesome! You’re welcome 😊
That was so cool, thanks for sharing. I would never have thought of making potato flakes.
Thanks! A viewer also told me that if you take what I ended up with and put it in a coffee grinder, it turns into the fluffy flakes!
If you don't have a dehydrator you could probably use an oven and the same temp/ same amount of time (therefore you wouldn't want to do it when it's hot outside, but would help keep ur home warm in the winter!), using cookie sheets lined with parchment paper.
Absolutely!
Thanks for giving me the push I needed to do this. I have 3 bags and was planning on doing it, now I will 💖
Yay!! You're welcome. I know...I do that too-buy food with the plans to preserve and then don't get to it. Glad to be an inspiration ;)
Very cool!! Gonna have to try it! 😊
Yes!!
I've haven't tried dehydrating potatoes in any form yet...but you made it look easy! Thanks for Sharing. I have the hand held fresh saver vacuum sealer. My machine is the cheapy one..doesn't have the attachment port. Works just as well. Nicely done Cathy!
Thanks! I've seen the hand-held ones before and they look like a great alternative.
Sounds crazy, but if you place a wooden spoon across your pot, it will prevent boiling overflowing 😊.
Thanks for great video!
Wow, great tip!! I'll have to try that.
After peeling which you’re doing the right way. I cut them in half length wise then use a mandolin slice 1/8 inch and blanch them, drain them then dehydrate them. You got dehydrated potato flakes. All your flakes will have the same consistency. Then vacuum seal in a mason jar.
Excellent tip! Thank you!
What type of dehydrator do you have? I see some that look small & plastic with stackable levels. Then others with drawers/trays. I am asking because I would like to buy one but I want to ask people that know! Thank you 😊
@@debwoods5834 it’s an Excalibur model, they come in 5 or 9 trays.
I have a Colzer 12 tray and I absolutely love it. If you dehydrate liquid stuff like eggs like I do, make sure you can get the silicone inserts with a lip on it to fit your trays because some dehydrators are too small for them to fit.
You are very sweet and I really appreciate your instructions. Thank you. I grew potatoes this year and needed to figure out what to do with most of them. Thanks again.
Thank you so much! Hope it works well for you.
wow this is so great!!! I would have never known that you could do this.
Thanks! I figure that everything that is on the store shelves I should be able to make too. It was fun doing this.
Thank You so very much for all the time you took through trial and error to bring us this! Truly appreciated! Many Blessings to You and Your Family.
You’re very welcome!!
Thank you so much for this video, I’ve got 100 lbs of potatoes to do and I’m definitely gonna try some like this. 🙏🏼❤️
Awesome! You're welcome :)
Same! My first year growing them has gone unexpectedly well!
I just learned something new!!! Thank You💕
Now that is quite the accomplishment because you know about everything there is know about food!
this looks really practical and yummy. I was thinking of finding something similar to make gratins with them. i like prep that makes cooking quick, convenient with a long shelf life. did you consider steaming the potatoes instead? I was thinking maybe if they stay a bit firmer we could slice them in slightly bigger chunks almost like shredding chunks, it would cook back and give chunky texture in the dish i think, and it could maybe keep longer and be more versatile.
I did not think about steaming them. However, you can do them anyway you would like. I prepare them to be just like mashed when I would rehydrate and not have to work with them.
I like the idea of dehydrating very thinly sliced and parboiled potatoes for use in au gratin recipes. I think it would be easier to get a "perfect" product this way.
thanks for all that nice and well described info
You're very welcome 🙂
Thx so much for all the great info ...will be making my potatoes like yours and storing them to ...great learning video and simple to understand for a beginner like me !!!
You’re welcome and thank you!
This is great, now I can do potatoes before they go bad, and from the store when you buy then in the bag some of them are so small to bake them as a baked potato so now I can make Potato flakes or slice them for fried potatoes . Great to have on hand , you can stock up on potatoes when they are on sale
Thank you so much for your video
You’re very welcome! Sounds like you have a great plan 😊
Thank you for the valuable tip. You have a lovely voice... The background music, while nice in it's own place, is distracting/competing from/with your perfectly awesome voice. You don't need the background music because your voice is blessed.
Thank you!
Thank you for a great informative video. l am in Australia and just used a dehydrater for the first time.l did corn and peas..I went hunting on RUclips for info on potatoes ...Found yours and it's terrific...l will try that .seems much better than having to slice it grate ..👏
Oh wonderful!! Glad to have you here 😊
Another Great idea and video, Thank You! I wonder if I could do this with sweet potatoes, as white potatoes do not work for me. If you get a chance look up Rain Country’s video where she uses a brake bleeder to vacuum seal, this has worked so much better for me instead of my vacuum sealer. Just a thought. Hope you have a Blessed day!
Thank you! I have heard of the brake bleeder but have not used it. I also have dehydrated sweet potatoes. I have left them in slices and also powdered them. I have a jar of powder that I can just make into mashed sweet potatoes at any time, which I really like. They actually grind up much easier than regular potatoes.
This also works great for winter squash and pumpkins. I fit 3 pie pumpkins into a pint jar! Anytime a stew or something needs a bit of thickening, I grab one of my powdered jars. It’s a great way to add veggies into just about anything you cook. Also, I do love the brake bleeder. I like to have non-electric backups whenever I can👍🏻
I bought a brake bleeder and an extra set of jar sealers that I put with my FoodSaver extra supplies. Printed out the how-to instructions for Justin Case. Good to have a backup plan, especially in these days of shortages and such. As for sweet potatoes, the Backpacking Chef channel has great info on dehydrating them. And other foods, as well.
I use both the vacuum sealer and the brake bleeder both seal well.. love this way of doing the potatoes I just bought 10kg to do this and make hash browns 😊 my ASD son is a potato king so we need to prep for him too 😂
I highly recommend put vegetable scraps in the freezer for a easy veggie broth
Yes, great idea!
I have found if you put an extra cap upside down in the regular sealer it works well if you find you can get it to seal great video content thanks!
Thank you!
I haven't done that yet but definitely have been planning on it. This is great information
Thank you!!!
Thank you for making this. I have been thinking about how to do this.
You're welcome!
Thank you for explaining the milk situation to me 4 videos to try and find that out.

Katie and I just realized I have a dehydrator similar to yours except mine is probably older. I remember when we made potatoes like this several years ago it took us awhile as well to get them dry. But yours look really nice great job. You keep yourself busy
Awesome!
Thank you so much for the directions to do this. I have been wanting to dehydrate some potatoes .
You’re welcome! The thinner you can spread them, the flakier they’ll be.

Lol
Hi Cathy! Sara here. I am so glad you posted this video! We always have trouble keeping potatoes past the Fall and we just found the jar top for the Foodsaver. I would never have thought to dehydrate them! So smart!
You are so welcome! Glad you have the tools to do it!
I wonder if you would get a flakier result, more like commercially produced potato flakes, if you made your base with much more water and strained very thin layers over silkscreen, the way handmade paper is laid. It probably doesn't make much of a difference once everything is reconstituted and recooked, but thinner flakes would surely be quicker to reconstitute and save on cooking fuel. Another option might be to fully powder the final product, but that might make a weird texture when reconstituted.
You could always try! Thinner is definitely better when trying to make them into small pieces because the product is very hard.
Great video! I'm going to share it with my extension group for a group workshop idea!! God bless!!
Thank you! Oh, that will be super! Blessings.
Thank you for experimenting and showing your process! I don't have access to a vacuum sealer where I live, but I can certainly store them for the mid-range use, and use them as additions to in-jar recipes!
You’re welcome! Yes, get creative and find different ways.
Did you happen to see the comment about a brake bleeder? You could look into that. Harbor Freight carries them.
@@bonniegarber9915 Thank you, but I live in Switzerland! :-)
I peal my potatoes the same way! 😊
nice!
Was so hoping to see them reconstituted. That almost never happens in dehydrating videos. Wondering why?
Lol. Well, first it took me 3 days to get the filming done. When I finally got to the point of vacuum sealing them, I was so done and just ready to store them away. I do have another request to reconstitute them, so I may do that in another video. Thanks for watching!
I did some today and I hope to include that in a video in the near future. These are certainly not “instant“ mashed potatoes, so they do take about 30-40 minutes to reconstitute, and then blend them more. The purpose of these potatoes is to have them for mid-term storage when we can’t have access to actual potatoes.
@@northstarprepsteader Totally understand, I think it's a great idea.
