Proberbly one of the best heel toe videos ive seen. most pro drummers just skip over these techniques like its some kind of trade secret. your way of explaining things is very easy for everyone to understand. Well done and thank you. Volitionjim uk.
as with all music technique learning, break it down into small parts and practice them SLOWLY. painfully slowly. get your muscles to know the motion you want to make at the pressure you want to use with the consistency required. much easier when you're working on small, simple bits of information at slow speeds. slowly increase the speed on each chunk of info, and then link a few and do them painfully slow again, gradually building to where you want to be. best lesson i've ever learned.
I know I'm 9 years too late, but you don't need to have your heel on the pedal to do heel toe. Do the exact same motion with your heel on the floor and you'll figure out the motion eventually. I got size 12 and my heel isn't on the pedal at all. I hope you figured this out in the last decade LOL
Dude i've been trying to figure out this technique for an entire year now......Thanks a million for posting this vid cuz i finally got it. RUclips and drummers rock!!!!!
Well, to me, this video explained this tech the best I've found on YT. He demonstrates and explains the technique that we can understand the point. He doesn't have to be a master to teach something this simple...
Great teacher and video question when you drop your heel is it your actual heel thats hitting the board or the closest part of your foot to the heel Because for my actual heel to hit the board because for my heel to hit the board the board is way to small about an inch or two up from heal hits the board it works i just want to make sure its being done right thanks great teacher
Trolling on GTA 5 and cod 3 I too had the same issue my heel sticks out about 2 inches I had nothing but the really back part of the pedal which is not part of the board itself
Dude I've spent so much time watching slick new instructional videos before I uncovered this. Just the video footage from 4:50 on specifically showing exactly where to put your foot on the pedal.... Priceless. Thank you so much!!!
thanks for the instructional vid Derrick, I've found this one of the best explanatory vids on youtube, I've now got heel-toe dialed nearly as fast as you with my right foot in just 2hrs practise - without knowing how to do it beforehand; will now have to get a 2nd pedal to learn my left foot!
This is, by FAR, the most useful and helpful drum vid on RUclips! Amazing, amazing stuff. I've been playing on the skins for about seven years now and this is still helpful. Just goes to show you you never can be sure you've mastered anything. Thumbs up! Thanks for the great vid!
DUDE THANK YOU SO MUCH I watched your heel toe instructions, went downstairs, and did it! I WAS laughing because of how easy it was!!! you've totally earned another subscriber!
i've seen a lot of people explaining this technique but i've never understand it really... Only now, i really think i got it. Thank's a lot bro, for real
Thank you for assisting me in using what youtube can be beneficial for.....real education. I'll never get the time to really get into this but I always have time to observe real experts. You have a very good teaching ability and many who want to go further can, thanks to your help. Thanks for sharing, knowledge is power! Bless you brother! Thunderous heel-toe bass drumming freaks us out!
I have a video tape from the 1990s explaining this technique of "hee, toe" but the way YOU explained it made it easier. The part I couldn't get was the "heel" part. You demonstrated and explained that better than the video I have. Thanks! Luv you man!! LOL!
I stopped wearing shoes YEARS ago. Felt like they were slowing me down. I find that I can slide my feet around easier and I can even use a sliding "technique" to create different responses from my pedals. This vid is great! I have been doing some of these moves for years and never been able to explain how. Nice teaching!
excellent video. made the heel-toe method look much easier. my foot is bigger than my pedal, but once i get a bigger one i'm sure i'll get it down in no time. keep up the good work.
I'm just now starting to teach myself how to play drums. I have a double bass pedal, but I had no idea that there were techniques to it. This vid has really helped me out alot!
Wow, it really is that mind-blowingly easy. I just started playing double bass yesterday, and you just taught me bass drum diddles in under 5 minutes. Thanks!
This video is a big help, It takes some practice to get it down, it works a differnt muscle than regular double bass. Your shin muscles will burn. But it's a good thing to have in your bag of tricks.
dude....can it be more simple?...wow...this guy born to be a teacher...he is a good teacher thas for sure. Some people sucks at explaining things but he is very fluent explaining things. Thanks
i really loved your explaination of the heel toe method... before i had alot of trouble when experimenting with it... but as u said its all in the rocking motion.... tanks man!
Thanks so much, I can't beleive how easy this was. It took me a few trys at first but then I got it. I've found that adjusting the pedal angle also really helps with this technique. The more tension in the spring gives a better bounce so you can get those double hits.
all your videos are great. you've got a good teaching style. thx. those of you with big feet should try the reverse technique. leave about an inch of footboard in front of your toes, hit with your toes (heel up), then drop your leg to get the double.
Thanks that really ended the questions for me. I also think that its easier to see what your doing with socks on, on other videos when they are wearing shoes it looks like their heels dont leave the bar, which confused me, but now I am enlightened thanks.
Joe from slip knot uses this technique but with a slight difference... he keeps his feet off the pedals a little but his hits are strong because he really moves his feet fast. Good Video!
great vid. you do a very good job explaining things in a way thats easy to take in. a lot of "pro drummers" instruction sucks. not because they are bad at drumming but because they lack communication skills. kudos to you! keep up the good work.
thank you heaps for posting this, I've been single heel toeing for years, mainly for cheating with tom kick triplets and have recently purchased my first ever double kick pedal, and intend to try out this technique with both feet
Don't Know If This Is The Proper Heel-toe Technique...Tried The Same Thing You Did , and Yes I Was Laughing With Joy that I Managed To Get Doubles Quicker Than My SIngles Strokes , But Once I Got My Self On a Small Board Pedal.....SO Much For My "heel-toe Technique"! It was Gone...Right And There!! I FIgured Another Way to Do it , But It Was More Actually a "toe-toe" Hit than a "heel-toe" , and Then I Magically Transformed Into Some Kind of a Slide Technique....Which In My Eyes is the Exact Opposite Way Of Thinking In the "Heel-Toe" so You Can Have Accented the Second Note! And More Useful When U Got To Play Something Like a Fast Half Time Shuffle , with many Doubles On "a-1"...Just Saying...
Thanks for the video. I watched a bunch of others before I found this one, but this was the best. I still have a little trouble with the heel-toe, but I just need to practice. Anyway, thanks a lot and keep up the good work.
I have a DW 7000 double pedal and I can do it just fine. I find it easier to do with your shoes off though. But you can do it even with your heel behind the heel plate. Just drop the leg, with the energy coming from the heel, and just roll forward a little on the toe and the rebound from the pedal should get in the second hit. I've only been practicing this for a couple days and it's been getting a lot easier.
@Villex93 You mean left hand? It's called traditional grip, from the first marching snare drums. They're held at an angle and you have to play like that to make it comfortable. When the drum set came into being, all the drummers were already playing like that, so they kept the technique. It's just how some people learn, obviously for full-on metal you need matched, but trad grip is fine for virtually any genre, and sometimes better for left hand control.
Thank You! I have watched about 3 other videos and had no luck. I was able to do this after a 1/2 hour of practice after watching this video Even with left foot slowly. I will checking your videos first next time I want to learn how to do something :).
Wow, ever since my band teacher had a day in Jazz Band be a day where he plays the drums the entire class, I've wanted to know how to do this. This video was incredible, and I thought the snare stuff at the beginning was pretty good!
Derrick is completely right i just tried it about 2 minutes ago and i actually laughed it is so easy it takes a while to get use to but after that it's really easy
Had the same problem, had to put shoes on as it started to hurt my toes. Still beginner but WOW!!! It is working!!! Dont try to hit it with your heel, I do a pretty normal flat foot 1st hit and the 2nd hit is a heel down (but feels like a bounce). Think Flat - Toe, rather than heel - toe, works for me anyway. Feels very effort less. I can feel it coming!!!!
@Necroparanoia dont try and get a first hit with your heel, you're not supposed to. the heel drop doesnt actually produce a sound. both hits are produced from the rocking motion forward.
When you mention coming down with your foot parallel at 5:15 or so... it reminds me of gravity blasting in a way... like coming down parallel with the stick and the working the motion in that same effortless manner
whaw Derrick, you are really a great teacher! amazing. you should put your own DVD, something like : Derrick Secret of drumming Expose :) you have a way to show stuff in such a easy and nice way! GREAT!
as you can see, footboard length doesn't have a huge impact. But its hard to get a heel stroke on a pedal that your heel hangs off of when you are "maxed". As you can hear, there is a SMALL difference between his heel stroke and his toe impact/velocity wise, which a longer pedal would even out a bit.
When you're learning, you're right, it might seem like one of the hardest things to get down, but with enough practice, you'll eventually get it. When learning heel toe, don't be tempted to start out fast either. Start out very slow. And practice it with your right and left foot separately so you can develop an equal amount of skill and endurance for both feet. Once you got it with your left and right foot, then move on to trying it with both feet. But yes, it takes a lot of practice.
With larger feet, it really does become a lot harder on regular footboards. I know from experience that this is ridiculously easy on the Axis Longboard, but on a normal-sized pedal, it's a lot more strenuous. The problem becomes that your heel runs off the end of the footboard, so it doesn't do anything. Solutions may include moving the impact area up toward the middle of your foot or scooting your foot forward as much as possible and sliding backward as you hit.
a billion years later . THANK YOU.. the early years of youtube were a great time for drummers.
Proberbly one of the best heel toe videos ive seen. most pro drummers just skip over these techniques like its some kind of trade secret. your way of explaining things is very easy for everyone to understand. Well done and thank you. Volitionjim uk.
I agree. He has done a very good job explaining this. Other videos that I have watched make this way harder than it needs to be.
as with all music technique learning, break it down into small parts and practice them SLOWLY. painfully slowly. get your muscles to know the motion you want to make at the pressure you want to use with the consistency required. much easier when you're working on small, simple bits of information at slow speeds. slowly increase the speed on each chunk of info, and then link a few and do them painfully slow again, gradually building to where you want to be. best lesson i've ever learned.
14 years later, I’m back. Learned the technique through this video but never thanked you.
Thanks man
Be safe
Keep rocking!
You're a great instructor, thank you!
This is by far the _best_ instructions on how to actually perform the heal toe technique.
can't make beat with heal.......size 14 feet.....my heel is hanging off the pedal.

Kevin's vlog I think my foot is too long. The heel can't hit it
Dude I've spent so much time watching slick new instructional videos before I uncovered this. Just the video footage from 4:50 on specifically showing exactly where to put your foot on the pedal.... Priceless. Thank you so much!!!

As others have said, this is very easy to understand and have it implanted into your brain. Thank you very much!

i really loved your explaination of the heel toe method... before i had alot of trouble when experimenting with it... but as u said its all in the rocking motion.... tanks man!

those of you with big feet should try the reverse technique. leave about an inch of footboard in front of your toes, hit with your toes (heel up), then drop your leg to get the double.
I know this video is really old, but i have to say this is the best heel toe video iv seen
Derrick, Best demo I have seen on this technique. JR
nice video derrick... very clear tutorial.. it helps me alot how to start a proper way to heel toe method.
Thanks that really ended the questions for me. I also think that its easier to see what your doing with socks on, on other videos when they are wearing shoes it looks like their heels dont leave the bar, which confused me, but now I am enlightened thanks.
Great stuff! Watched all of your videos and the are simply great.
Im going to try this out tomorrow. I tried it a little already but I'm limited on what i can do. It's one of the best explanations I've sen though.
Awesome explanation! I'm bout to go practice this for what is gonna seem like an eternity! thanks for the demo!
Joe from slip knot uses this technique but with a slight difference... he keeps his feet off the pedals a little but his hits are strong because he really moves his feet fast. Good Video!
I like this explanation of the heeltoe technic. Really good explained,, im gonna practice this a lot!
great vid. you do a very good job explaining things in a way thats easy to take in. a lot of "pro drummers" instruction sucks. not because they are bad at drumming but because they lack communication skills. kudos to you! keep up the good work.
Awesome! First real useful video I have been able to find on heel toe tech!
man you really owned this method. i already knew how to do this, but this is just a beautiful how-to video. your video is way better than mine :D
thank you heaps for posting this, I've been single heel toeing for years, mainly for cheating with tom kick triplets and have recently purchased my first ever double kick pedal, and intend to try out this technique with both feet
10/10 Thank You for sharing your clear explainations of various drum concepts.
Very helpful tips Derrick, best of luck with your drumming career.

The way you're teaching it, heel-toe can't be done on any pedal with any shoe size, but the right way to do it you can.
Thanks for the video. I watched a bunch of others before I found this one, but this was the best. I still have a little trouble with the heel-toe, but I just need to practice. Anyway, thanks a lot and keep up the good work.
You explained it nicely. I´m starting with this really soon. Thanks.

Derrick! Thank you! I knew there had to be a way to do this! I've been playing for 29 years and I just got SCHOOLED!
Wow man, that was one of the most helpful comments I've ever seen. I'm looking forward to your vids.
Thanks, I just wanted to make sure I was doing this right, I kinda had it figured out on my own, but always worth making sure you have things right.
thx for that video ! your advices and your demonstration are very instructive ! i'm going to work this !!!
No one played the drums like derrick! I hope now he can meet neil peart and all the other lost greats.

learned a lot thanks for the upload! this guy explains very good and clear.
Man, this was awesome, I always concentrated on hand techniques but this video !! Awesome! Im gonna go practicing it now!

You've just proven an old dog can learn new tricks. Thanks man.
It's not a practice pad, it's an electronic kit (Roland, I believe) bass drum.
Thank you very much, I'll try this tommorow at my drum set.
born to teach
Wow, ever since my band teacher had a day in Jazz Band be a day where he plays the drums the entire class, I've wanted to know how to do this. This video was incredible, and I thought the snare stuff at the beginning was pretty good!

You're a very good teacher, thanks for this.
Nice explanation! I thought it was really hard to learn but it isn't.
Thanks a lot!
This heel toe method reminds me of the "floating hand" played on congas. I'm looking forward to trying it tomorrow. Thank you for the video.
@Necroparanoia dont try and get a first hit with your heel, you're not supposed to. the heel drop doesnt actually produce a sound. both hits are produced from the rocking motion forward.
hey thanks for posting this vid. i watched it a couple times and now i can do heal toe really well its very easy
cool video man, you make it seem so effortless super smooth rythym.
wow, the way you said it makes so much sense... like i can't way to try it again now..
this is the best vid to learn the heel toe. im lovin it.
Thanks ,this one made me finally get it .... now practicing...
When you mention coming down with your foot parallel at 5:15 or so... it reminds me of gravity blasting in a way... like coming down parallel with the stick and the working the motion in that same effortless manner
really good video man!! And also teaching the tecnique is amazing.. I appreciated that :)
Glad I found this. Thanks for the in depth explanation. Subscribed.
whaw Derrick, you are really a great teacher! amazing.
you should put your own DVD, something like :
Derrick Secret of drumming Expose :)
you have a way to show stuff in such a easy and nice way!
GREAT!
hey may be not the best drummer or the fastes but he is the best teacher !! thx derrick now i can get the heel toe method !! greets
