  • Took my Tascam 32 apart, cleaned the motors ,and it did not solve the issue but I discovered the reason why I had rewind and fast forward issues.

That is good work, EB. We sure ran our share of tapes through that machine back in the day.

In my next life, if I have a reel to reel, I'll be one step ahead. Thanks!

I don't know. I rebuilt a tascam 32 tonight and been a bit frustrated with the same issue. Had a heck of a mess from rubber to clean up and got it all over may hands and under my nails. My machine is like new, not sure how it seems so newish. Letting the reel motors run wihtout anything on them I noticed the take up motor would vary in speed, mostly slow, no load but did wind up fast a couple times. While I like the machine, I feel my Otari decks are MUCH stronger and heavier made. Those use induction motors on reels. My 32 seems kinda weak and a bit cheaper. Kinda disappointed in the deck although it sounds very good on playback and heads have literally no wear. Just have to I guess use the Otari to rewind the reels after playback. Was even weak using 7 inch plastic reels. One of my Otari decks did have a bit of an issue getting going, but i went through that machine and oiled the motors and now it hammers like my MX 50N I just rebuilt. Oiled motor bearings on Tascam but made no difference.

Forgive me , if I miss the point of this. You are saying that the muck on the heads caused the fast forward and rewind not to work?
That seems way too simple a reason. But if so this is a real revelation. Thank you very much indeed.
I picked up and unused, in the box, Tascam 32 like yours for £50. Its perfect and I consider myself very lucky , but even luckier to have people like you solving my problems before I even encounter them. Hi from the UK.

The tape itself is more than likely sticking together.

Good video Eb! I would just add that it's basically an Ampex issue with the binder that they used to put the oxide onto the tape itself. The oven thing works because it temporarily dries the stickiness up allowing you to at least copy the original, but that's all you should do is duplicate it and then get rid of the tape. All Ampex tapes including video tape produced by them exhibit this issue. Even if you have a new, in the package Ampex tape, do not use it! Get Maxell, Sony or something like that. Even the bargain tapes like Radio Shack and Shamrock do not have this issue. Here's a link in case you want further info...www.josephson.com/bake_tape.html

Appreciate this insight, will be buying a Reel to Reel (hopefully soon-10" Reels a must). I know the smell of the tape tells the quality as well.

What kind of reel to reel are you looking for? My brother is selling a 2 track and an 8 track Teac. Both with new capstan and belt.

    Hi there,
Is there any way that you could please link to the video that you talk about, where the guy is shown taking the motors apart? Or at least point me in the right direction as far as how to find it……Thank you in advance!

Thank you for the video, I might have to try that although the machine I just picked up has the same problem with the capstan not functioning cuz of the belt in the pinch roller damaged because of old age, I just ordered the belt and Tire and I'm about to put the thing together. I'll have to go through the mechanisms to make sure everything is working properly, I've been told to use sewing machine oil and white lithium grease for certain components. I have the same exact machine and I got his big brother Tascam 38 waiting to come out of his box too.

I am also preparing to do the same belt and tire change on my brothers Tascam 38. I viewed other You tube videos that where very valuable before I dove in to the disassembly. I believe the front part of the 32 and 38 machines are almost if not totally identical to do the belt replace. Good luck EB

@@webebbe I'm doing the pinch roll a tire and a belt just like you. Make sure you have 99.9% isopropyl alcohol, Q-tips, Allen wrenches , Torx Sockets , sewing machine oil , a trash bucket nearby, Multiple wire ties to hold up Tape head assembly While you clean out remnants of the old broken belt . Also make a video of everything you do So if you forget where something goes on, you can just review the video again . I hope this helps.
