Even if all of this isn't exactly amazing discoveries, it comes to show how good they got at saving resources by the end of the Wii's life. There are so many graphics here that stop EXACTLY where the camera cuts them off, and it's really impressive.
It's astounding so many minigames are literally less than the bare minimum you would think is needed and then boom 8 years of skybox and a literal sea. Like *HOW* is King Bob-omb only half modelled?!
If I were to guess; it takes a lot less processing to tell the Wii to generate simple shapes like discs and cones than to model them, and from there they used them for navigating the rest of the model and it's animations... and then either a; had other parts of the model rigged up directly with those objects, or b; didn't bother removing them because they're out of sight and are extremely light weight. One might think they were textured, but that be due to how wii generally handled shapes and shadows, or they might have picked a snippet of an asset already in play. Like, not even told it to look directly at a 'file' but like 4 bytes from a place in memory. Similarly not surprised at the spike ball thing, it makes perfect sense that the ball is the last to go; it looks like it's a 2D object just made to look 3D with the 3D spikes surrounding it.
Feels like yesterday when the Mario Party 8 episode was uploaded. I'm definitely looking forward to watching this and I wouldn't mind seeing more Mario Party/Mario Spinoff games for Boundary Break in the future!
23:53 - Honestly I think its a fuel or speed dial, The red bit is an arrow and the black bits look like letters(E for Empty / F for Full) or maybe numbers if it's a speed dial
I understand why people hate MP9, but I love it so much I do understand it's problems (well, really it only has 1 problem but it's a huge one) but it's such a good game, people just hate it because it's different the only issue the game has (which I don't mind) is the players all being locked on the same space
i love how you can infer parts of the development process by the stuff they left out of bounds, like maybe they planned for a different camera so they had to make extra background, or already knowing they don't need to model full tables
@@DanyRobertHunselar Without being aware that you were referring to a specific version of Mario Party, your message came across quite differently for a moment, especially with those quotes. 😅
I think the circle was put in King Bob-omb so the modelers had a reference for his circumference, but forgot to remove it when importing it into the game.
1:04 Above the jukebox, it looks like there was a door for the object to pop out of. My theory is that, when you played the track, the "CD player" would eject out with a spinning disc already in it and spinning while the jukebox played its usual animation.
The honest answer to a lot of your questions is just that one such a modern system with all these mini games kind of instance into their own scenes there's less of a need to autistically optimize tri count as it's already low enough to perform just fine Things like having a fully modeled head despite goggles on top are usually just there because it helps the person making the model position them logically and to correct scale and whatnot and They just never went back to optimize by deleting those few little tris here and there because it wasn't really necessary for a game like this
Most likely answer for the circle inside King bob-omb is that the character was modelled using a hemisphere base model, rather than a sphere. Hemispheres have circle base, and in this case it seems to have been in the orientation where the base was pointing upwards. The vertices of the dome were then rotated 90 degrees, but the base was left as is to more easily show the character dimensions during development. I bet that circle is visible only from the top, and doesn't have normal vectors pointing to the other side as well.

i know you said you'd probably never do something like this again, but it'd be neat to see you tackle Mario Party Superstars environments AND as a bonus, compare the out-of-bounds content with the original minigames just to see if they replicated them accurately.
I actually liked Mario Party 9, I have gone back and played the older games but I have a different connection to Mario Party 9 than I do for the older games.
4:30 - 4:56 Reminds me of the way Squidward and SpongeBob were looking at that pizza. So I imagine that but with like a power-up in reserve or something, like. "That's a fine looking fire flower."
5:56 aaa THANK YOU for actually pronouncing his name right - it's a bit of a pet peeve of mine to hear people say "LACK-ih-too" even though he literally says his own name in Mario Kart 7 and confirms that it's "la-KEY-too". was a nice surprise lol loved this game as a kid even though I was never totally sold on the shared car mechanic (the music still slaps imo, the soundtrack was fantastic). really cool to see it explored like this! thanks for sharing!
This was a cool insight on the modeling and culling tricks they took advantage of in this game, loved the video! I will say that the reason certain areas had seemingly more background details than needed (almost seeming unused) was likely because some of those minigames could also be played in the first person mode. This includes: Logger Heads Ring Leader Piranha Patch Skyjinks Plunder Ground Billistics Mob Sleds Pianta Pool Magma Mayhem & Tumble Temple I’m not sure if the environments are culled differently in perspective mode, but it does explain the extra section of garden you noticed
Hey Shesez. Thank you for the video ! I always love watching them especially as a game dev, its priceless ressources for good dev technics. I noticed you were struggling with maybe the pacing of your video or something? At some point you say you repeat a lot of the same thing about environment being bigger than they actually should be. I think it is a problem because of the format of the video maybe? Those are just my feedback, feel free to ignore them but what I like when you do a region break is how the themes keeps things fresh by jumping a lot in an hard to predict way in your video. First its translation, then its sprite and so on. Maybe if you do a video like mario party with a lot of mini games, instead of going through mini games by mini games, you could approach the format by themes! For instance, you could have an environment technics part, where you show all the environments and what is special about them. You could even narrate by putting forward how many minigames uses 2D textues, which one uses forced perspective and sutff like that. And then you could go through character models or models where we're never supposed to see the details because they're hidden. All of that! On other games it might no work but for mario party that could totally work I think. Anyway hope this help! Thank you for your work, happy to help you out through patreon :)
7:27 My guess is the mustache, eyes, crown and arms are attached to the disc instead of the sphere, so if he had to turn for an animation, since he's only half modeled, the interior disc spins, creating the illusion that the half sphere is a sphere. But that's of course assuming the modeler's didn't know what animations the animation team was going to use and just had that as an option.
I love seeing all minigames in one vid! I hope enpugh people like it for you to do it again! However, I'd prefer the reverse order. Least interesting to most interesting would be good~ As usual, thank you again for a great video!

Honestly I always wondered what the minigame arenas of all these games looked like, they’re so barely seen and yet they so often give the impression of an entire world, what comes to mind is the soda minigame in 8 that has an entire city that to my knowledge we never see anywhere else
I would imagine the reason that the spikes call out before the ball at 16:00 is because the entire hitbox of the object is set to disappear after fully moving down to a certain height, or past a certain trigger zone? I the balls were made of multiple different objects grouped together to form one, I think that makes sense. I'm not one of the devs of course, though, so that's just a guess. Anyway, great video. :p
Omg I just got this game and I've been constantly looking up videos for these games and all I saw was mario party 8, I really hope you keep making mario party videos!!! (BTW I am definitely subscribing!)
23:55 it's a speedometer. You can see the arrow in the middle, and it can go left and right. It also may be like a temperature gauge indicator, but I'm pretty sure it's just a speedometer and the needle is in the middle because it didn't really expect people to look at the texture that closely.
4:13 when your modeling stuff like characters or a prop you should never try to make it by extruding polygons out of one piece you should try to break up the thing your modeling into pieces and then model those pieces separately and then combine them to make the model that's why the glasses are separate and that's why bowser has a back under his shell in super Mario galaxy 2
In all honesty, I wouldn’t mind future Mario Party videos covering every board and minigame. Even if most of the time there won’t be much of interest, but it doesn’t hurt to be comprehensive.
